Adventure Activities have written procedures for their safe conduct. The Imagination Trail Activities include:- Exploratory Activities Initiative Activities Leadership Activities Mountain Bike Riding Teamwork Activities Roles & Responsibilities Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff are available to demonstrate and assist in the supervision of activities.

4 However, the group leader is responsible for camper supervision and behaviour at all times. When Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc Staff lead or instruct an activity they will take responsibility for the technical skills and related safety of campers, including 1 st Aid. Group leaders are responsible for the supervision and behaviour of campers at the activity, to and from the activity, for those campers waiting their turn and for first aid in all other instances. Prior to the commencement of any activity, Group Leaders must identify participants with medical conditions that may place themselves or others at risk during the activity and identify who is responsible for first aid prior to the activity. All accidents, injuries and incidents (near misses) are to be recorded in the Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Incident Notification Form and / or Patient Care Report located in the Office and each Accommodation Site. The group leader is responsible for identifying safety issues associated with an off-site excursion (not staffed by Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc Staff) and taking the necessary precautions. Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. has a Protective Behaviours Policy that details appropriate behaviour of Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff and contractors around campers. This is available from the Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Office. Note to Teachers, Principals & School Councils: Blackwood Staff are employed to create, maintain, implement, supervise and instruct activities that groups participate in at Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre. During the implementation of activities Blackwood Staff may request support from School Staff to help run & Co-ordinate some activities if this occurs School Staff will be instructed on guidelines & safe implementation of each activity. While Blackwood Staff have expertise in all activities conducted at Blackwood, School Staff are fully responsible for their students at ALL TIMES & Blackwood Staff cannot be considered part of the staff : student ratio at any stage during your visit to Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre. Please also be aware that due to unforseen circumstances programs may be modified. So while Activities that have not been approved by School Councils & Principals will not be conducted some activities may be implemented at different times or on different days during your School s visit to Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre. Camper Clothing A prerequisite for participating in any Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc Activity is the following: Long hair tied back Jewellery removed Loose clothing tuck in or removed Objects removed from pockets Glasses fixed to the head or removed Sunscreen Sun hat Solid footwear Raincoat (weather dependent)

THE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR SUPERVISION OF THESE ACTIVITITES BELONGS TO THE GROUP LEADER; and VISITING STAFF Age Suitability All Ages Staff Ratio (Remember Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff cannot be considered as part of your Staff : Student Ratio at any stage during your Blackwood Experience.) 1:8 - leaders/teachers/adults to campers Group Leaders Experience Must have previous experience in supervising groups in outdoor recreation activities. Must have previous experience in supervising groups in indoor recreation activities. Student Participant Experience Ability & Willingness to safely share and participate in a variety of Games & Activities. Awareness of others and safety guidelines relating to the Games & Activities. Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Responsibilities To ensure the Activity is appropriate for the age, ability & experience of the visiting students. Take responsibility for the technical and related safety of participants engaged in the activity. Briefing participants about the nature and purpose of the activity, about potential hazards and appropriate safety procedures and instructions to be followed on arrival.

6 Group Leaders Responsibilities The Group Leader will be responsible for the supervision and behaviour of campers on the activity, at all times and for first aid. Assessing first aid requirements, identifying campers at risk e.g. asthma and appointing the first aider Informing other Visiting Staff of their roles in the behaviour, supervision and instruction of campers. Monitoring the welfare and fitness of Campers and other Visiting Staff. Checking the suitability of clothing and equipment carried by Campers and other Visiting Staff. Undertaking a head count prior to, during and after all Accommodation Site Activities. Implementing sun safe strategies for all Campers & Visiting Staff. Recording all incidents including near misses on the Incident Notification Form and / or patient Care Report and advising the Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre inc. Staff and their School Principals. Visiting Staff Responsibilities To carry out tasks as directed by the Group Leader and / or Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff. These may include but are not limited to:- Monitoring the welfare and fitness of campers; Assisting the Group Leader and Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff; First aid responsibility; The supervision and behaviour of campers; and Adhering to the safety rules. 7 Safety Briefing & Emergency Response Students can only access the Accommodation Site Activities including the Adventure Playgrounds only under the direction of the Group Leader The Accommodation Site Activities must be supervised by visiting staff at all times regardless of whether the activity is being conducted indoors or outdoors DO NOT throw any of the Activity Equipment DO NOT interfere with anyone else utilise other Accommodation Site Activities If an activity is currently being used patiently wait until that activity is available or play with an alternative activity until you can use the activity you d like to use Before going home every piece of equipment from every Accommodation Site Activity MUST BE accounted for IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY SITUATION EVERYONE MUST STOP AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS OF BLACKWOOD SPECIAL SCHOOLS OUTDOOR EDUCATION CENTRE Inc. Must have previous experience in supervising groups ON Playground Equipment. Student Participant Experience Ability & Willingness to safely share and participate in accessing Adventure Playgrounds. ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIG Archaeological Dig Locations Sand Pit at the Residence Accommodation Site Wheelchair Sand Pit at the School Accommodation Site Archaeological Dig Descriptions This is an activity where students will be placed in a sand pit and required to dig in the sand. It is not a treasure hunt activity. This is an activity where students are encouraged to act like Archaeologists and carefully exhumed buried artefacts from the Archaeological Dig Site. Age Suitability 5 14 year olds Staff Ratio (Remember Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff cannot be considered as part of your Staff : Student Ratio at any stage during your Blackwood Experience.) 1:8 - leaders/teachers/adults to campers (a minimum of 2 Visiting Staff must be on any Archaeological Dig) Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff Experience Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff have previous experience in preparing, implementing, leading and reviewing the Archaeological Dig. They are confident of their own experience & ability to safely implement the Archaeological Dig into a Camp Program. Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff have experience in the Archaeological Dig Activity. Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff are aware of the intricacies involved in implementing the Archaeological Dig Activity including, but not limited to:- Depth to bury artefacts Dampness & weather conditions in relation to the sand Students causing problems during the activity Risk Management & Emergency Procedures All other Logistical requirements for the Archaeological Dig Activity Group Leaders Experience Must have previous experience in supervising groups in outdoor recreation activities. Student Participant Experience Ability & Willingness to safely move about and play in a sand pit. Awareness of others and safety guidelines relating to the Archaeological Dig Activity.

Briefing participants about the nature and purpose of the activity, about potential hazards and appropriate safety procedures and instructions to be followed. Group Leaders Responsibilities The Group Leader will be responsible for the supervision and behaviour of campers on the activity, at all times and for first aid. Assessing first aid requirements, identifying campers at risk e.g. asthma and appointing the first aider Informing other Visiting Staff of their roles in the behaviour, supervision and instruction of campers. 13 First Aid Requirements The Group Leader MUST carry a first aid kit at all times. There MUST be a qualified first aider within the visiting staff not necessarily the Group Leader. Safety Briefing & Emergency Response This is an Archaeological Dig Activity and NOT a Treasure Hunt You are required to dig into the sand to find artefacts and slowly exhume the artefacts as if you where an Archaeologist DO NOT throw sand DO NOT throw any of the Digging Implements DO NOT run around the Archaeological Dig Site DO NOT push any of the other Archaeologists working in the Archaeological Dig Site Once you have exhumed something from the Archaeological Dig Site bring it over to the seat to answer questions relating to what you have found IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY SITUATION EVERYONE MUST STOP AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS OF BLACKWOOD SPECIAL SCHOOLS OUTDOOR EDUCATION CENTRE Inc. STAFF / GROUP LEADER / EMERGENCY SERVICES Activity Notes Anyone Leading the Archaeological Dig Activity through Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc MUST BE:- Familiar with the Archaeological Dig Activity Familiar with the Archaeological Dig Safety Briefing Familiar with Emergency & Risk Management Plans Currently 1 st Aid Level 2 Qualified Everyone MUST BE checked to ensure they have appropriate gear for the Archaeological Dig Activity Issue Wet Weather Jackets if required Constantly check the health and wellbeing of all members of the group throughout the walk Environmental Considerations DO NOT throw sand everywhere Keep the noise to a minimum to ensure you do not upset the neighbours

BUSH COOKING THIS ACTIVITY CANNOT BE CONDUCTED ON DAYS of TOTAL FIRE BAN or DURING DAYS of EXTREME FIRE CONDITIONS Bush Cooking Locations Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Bush Cooking Activity Site The Tent Shelter Accommodation Site Outdoor / Indoor Campfire The School Accommodation Site Outdoor Campfire The Residence Accommodation Site Outdoor Campfire Wombat State Forest Lerderderg State Forest Bush Cooking Descriptions Bush Cooking is an activity where the students are required to cook their chosen recipes on an open fire. Students are required to prepare the ingredients for cooking. It is the Group Leaders decision as to whether the act of lighting the fire is to be completed by the students as part of the overall Bush Cooking Activity Experience. Students are responsible for extinguishing the fire at the end of the activity:- The fire will NOT be classified as extinguished until the students can safely place their hands into the coals and hold the coals. Briefing participants about the nature and purpose of the activity, about potential hazards and appropriate safety procedures and instructions to be followed. Risk Management & Emergency Procedures All other Logistical requirements for implementing Bush Cooking at the Centre Group Leaders Experience Must have previous experience in supervising groups in outdoor recreation activities.

To safely & confidently implement the Bush Cooking Activity. Take responsibility for the technical and related safety of participants engaged in the activity. Confirming Weather conditions with Group Leaders prior to preparing for the Bush Cooking Activity. Briefing participants about the nature and purpose of the activity, about potential hazards and appropriate safety procedures and instructions to be followed. Group Leaders Responsibilities GROUP LEADERS ARE FULLY RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING ALL BUSH COOKING INGREDIENTS The Group Leader will be responsible for the supervision and behaviour of campers on the activity, at all times and for first aid. Orienteering Hill Bush Hut making Descriptions Bush Hut Making is a Survival Activity The maximum time permitted to complete this activity is 2 hours (120 minutes) Students are required to make a Hut to Accommodate a Group of Students using nothing but natural materials from the Bush Environment The reliability of their Bush Hut may be tested at the end of the Activity with a bucket of Water With full School Council Approval if the students Bush Huts are structurally sound they may be able to Camp in their Bush Hut during their Blackwood Experience. If this is a program request, students will be given an appropriate time frame to build a safe hut this may exceed the 2 hour time limit Age Suitability All ages. BUSHWALKING Bushwalk Locations Wombat State Forest Lerderderg State Forest Werribee State Gorge Mount Buffalo National Park (Alpine Ride Bushwalk Only) Bushwalk Descriptions The Department of Education & Early Childhood Development (DEECD) identifies Bushwalking as a specialised activity. All Bushwalks conducted by Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff follow clearly defined paths. A lot of the walks are along narrow water races from the 1800 s Gold Rush high above the Lerderderg River. Some bushwalks follow 4WD tracks. A lot of the walks cross many walking and 4WD Tracks & Roads. Most of the Bushwalks are loops starting & finishing at the same destination. Some walks require a vehicle shuttle prior to the walk as they start & finish at different destinations. Carrying of water and snacks on all Bushwalks is essential Walks are not weather dependent however in periods of high fire danger or rough, wet weather groups are advised to select another activity. Students are given the opportunity to calculate their scores as they participate in the Activity. The Imagination Trail Course involves walking around sealed but hilly 720m track. If a participant loses balance the SPOTTERS:- Gently help the participant to regain their balance and resume the Low Ropes Element; or Gently help the participant step off and safely remove themselves from the Low Ropes Element. Wombat State Forest The Imagination Trail Back Creek Walking Track NIGHT WALK Night Walk Locations Night Walk Descriptions The Department of Education & Early Childhood Development (DEECD) identifies Bushwalking as a specialised activity therefore Night Walks are also in the same classification. All Night Walks conducted by Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff follow clearly defined paths. A lot of the Night Walk Routes are along narrow water races or narrow Walking Tracks. Sections of the Night Walk Routes follow 4WD tracks. Most of the Night Walk Routes are loops starting & finishing at the same destination. Night Walks are not weather dependent however in periods of high fire danger or rough, wet weather groups are advised to select another activity. Age Suitability All ages. DUKE of EDINBURGH EXPEDITIONS Wombat State Forest Lerderderg State Forest Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Locations Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Descriptions Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor education Centre Inc. is an ideal location for Schools to safely & successfully implement Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions. At the moment all Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions conducted at Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. involve participation in the Activity of Bushwalking. However, that does not exclude other Outdoor Adventure Activity Expeditions in the Future. ie Cycling The Department of Education & Early Childhood Development (DEECD) identifies Bushwalking as a specialised activity. All Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions conducted by Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff follow clearly defined paths. A lot of the walks are along narrow water races high above the Lerderderg River. Some Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions access 4WD tracks. A lot of the walks cross many walking and 4WD Tracks & Roads. Most of the Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions are loops starting & finishing at the same destination. Some Expeditions require a vehicle shuttle prior as they start & finish at different destinations. Carrying of water and snacks on all Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions is essential Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions are not weather dependent however in periods of high fire danger or rough, wet weather groups are advised to select another activity. The Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions offered at Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. can be designed & catered to the Experience of the Students offering Group Leaders the opportunity to choose age & fitness appropriate Expeditions for their Groups. Staff Ratio (Remember Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff cannot be considered as part of your Staff : Student Ratio at any stage during your Blackwood Experience.) 1:6 - leaders/teachers/adults to campers (a minimum of 2 Visiting Staff must be on Duke Expedition) Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff Experience Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff have previous experience in leading walking groups through the Wombat & Lerderderg State Forests and implementing Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions. They are confident of their own ability and fitness to complete the walk. Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff have experience in search, rescue and Emergency Procedures appropriate to the level of all Bushwalks implemented at the Centre. Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff are aware of the intricacies of all Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions implemented at the Centre including, but not limited to:-

Must have previous experience in supervising groups in outdoor recreation activities. Student Participant Experience Fitness level to complete the walk selected. Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Responsibilities To ensure the selected Expedition is appropriate for the age, ability & experience of the visiting students. To safely & confidently guide the selected Duke of Edinburgh Expedition. Take responsibility for the technical and related safety of participants engaged in the activity. Confirming Weather conditions with Group Leaders prior to preparing for a Duke of Edinburgh Expedition. Ensuring the group remains in verbal contact and that a lead and whip are appointed. Familiarization with the route. Briefing participants about the nature and purpose of the activity, about potential hazards and appropriate safety procedures, and instruction in procedures to be followed if participants become lost. Group Leaders Responsibilities The Group Leader will be responsible for the supervision and behaviour of campers on the activity, at all rest stops, at the destination and for first aid. Assessing first aid requirements, identifying campers at risk e.g. asthma and appointing the first aider Notifying Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff at the commencement and end of their Bushwalk if they are leading the walk without Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff assistance. Informing other Visiting Staff of their roles in the behaviour, supervision and instruction of campers. Monitoring the welfare and fitness of Campers and other Visiting Staff. Checking the suitability of clothing and equipment carried by Campers and other Visiting Staff. Undertaking a head count prior to, during and after the Duke of Edinburgh Expedition. Implementing sun safe strategies for all Campers & Visiting Staff. Recording all incidents including near misses on the Incident Notification Form and / or patient Care Report and advising the Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre inc. Staff and their School Principals. Assuming all Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff Responsibilities as listed above if leading the Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff support.
