2 WELCOME The Wayne YMCA camp experience is a rich, learning environment. New friends, new songs, new achievements, combined with new growth and independence. The essence of YMCA camp is the presence of supportive relationships, meaningful opportunities and challenging activities in a physically and emotionally safe environment. A place designed for children, where they can explore and discover, an important rite of passage especially for today s children. Children are inherently curious and naturally risk takers. These are both important elements to learning. Our camps give children age appropriate opportunities for safe risks and enable children to challenge their steepest learning curve. Camp nurtures curiosity, inviting creativity which is a precursor to discovery and growth. Give your child the gift of camp and enjoy with your family many treasured memories. 3 THINGS TO KNOW Wayne YMCA Day Camps provide a safe and enriching environment for children to participate in healthy, developmentally appropriate activities and learning experiences. All camps focus on building self-esteem, confidence and social skills while increasing independence and health and wellness awareness. Your child will have fun and make new friends while exploring new experiences. Staff We carefully select and screen caring role models who demonstrate a passion for developing confidence and good character in youth. The Y maintains a commitment to a recruiting process that includes comprehensive training and background checks. How to Register Complete the registration form and return the original signed form to the Wayne YMCA. All campers are required to be members of one of the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges branches throughout the length of their camp participation. A $50 deposit per week is required at the time of registration and the balance for all sessions is due in full by May 15, Payment plans are available if registered prior to May 15. 4 SUMMER PLAY SCHOOL SMALL STEPS WITH BIG DISCOVERIES. YMCA SUMMER PLAY SCHOOL is the best preschool camp around! Give your child an unforgettable summer. Our youngsters have the opportunity to learn and explore in a nurturing and loving environment. Located in the comfort of our bright, cheerful, air-conditioned classrooms and fenced-in fully equipped yard, young children have the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities and cool indoor fun! This program is led by our own experienced professional staff and well supervised by college and high school age assistants. Children are divided into different age groups to maximize their social experiences and to make sure that their activities are age-appropriate. ACTIVITIES Water play with sprinklers and swim for the Lions, Tigers and Zebras, arts and crafts, outdoor/playground time, story time, gym time, and special events/activities that match the theme of the week. WEEKLY THEMES Each week is assigned a different fun and engaging theme. The children will participate in activities related to that theme each day. Examples of Theme Weeks are: Fourth of July Week; Beach Week, Amazing Animal Week, CATCH week, Safety Week, and Imagination Week. Weekly themes are subject to change. SPECIAL EVENTS Celebrating America Parade, Beach Party, a live animal experience, field day, road rally, teddy bear pajama party, scavenger hunts, cooking projects and more. 4
5 AGE GROUPS AGE 2 For 2 year-olds who may or may not have been to nursery school before. Designed to promote early socialization in a nurturing atmosphere, children will enjoy age-appropriate activities in the classroom and sand and water play in our yard. A daily snack is provided. AGE 3 Features outdoor activities including sprinklers and water play as well as climbing and ride-on toys. The classroom is enticing with bright toys and interesting arts and crafts and story time. A swim-readiness program takes place at our indoor pool. The program is supervised by our Aquatics staff. AGE 4 Children participate in a daily swim-readiness program at our indoor pool, supervised by our Aquatics staff. We also feature cultural and nature programs, in addition to arts and crafts, playground time, and story time. Daily snack is provided. AGE 5 This program is designed for children going into Kindergarten in the fall, as they are introduced to a structured camp experience in the comfort of a preschool setting. Features daily swim time in the indoor pool - 3 days per week are instructional swim and 2 days are free swim, organized field games, arts-and-crafts, cooking and story time are a few of the activities they participate in on a daily basis. 6 TRADITIONAL DAY CAMP PLAY ALL DAY - MAKE LASTING FRIENDSHIPS. TRADITIONAL DAY CAMP provides a safe and nurturing environment where children have fun, make new friends and explore new activities! All camp activities are exciting with an emphasis on building confidence, self-reliance, problem solving skills, and social skills. With the Y, you can be assured that your child will have a positive environment to play, learn and grow. CAMPERS ARE GROUPED AS FOLLOWS: SCOUTS (Entering grades K-2) We focus on socialization and confidence. Scout activities emphasize hands-on learning and experiences. EXPLORERS (Entering grades 3-5) Problem solving and teamwork skills are vital for a growing Explorer. Explorers will experience all of our camp activities, but will also enjoy activities that focus on working together and overcoming obstacles. ADVENTURERS (Entering grades 6-8) As they are our oldest campers, our focus for Adventurers is on enabling their decision making skills and increasing their sense of independence. Along with their counselor, Adventurer groups set their schedule based on daily activity options. ACTIVITIES Archery, arts and crafts, basketball, cooking, dance, dodgeball, drama, field games, fitness, flag football, free swim, Ga-Ga, nature, scooters, soccer, softball, street hockey, tennis, trips, Ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, Yoga and more. FIELD TRIPS Campers in our Explorer and Adventurer groups go on biweekly field trips. Previous field trips have included: Skylands Ice World, Laser One Laser Tag, Turtleback Zoo, Fairview Lake YMCA Camp, Sterling Mine and Mineral Museum, and more. Field trips are included for campers in the Explorer and Adventurer age groups in traditional, performing arts, and sports camps. CLUB TIME After lunch, all campers will be able to participate in club time. Clubs are groups where kids can explore their interests with their friends, guided by a caring camp counselor. Campers will engage across age groups and share their passion and excitement through club topics like: environment, reading, sports, pokemon, science, and more. 6
7 SPECIAL EVENTS Campers in every age group will enjoy special event days on weeks where there are no field trips. These camp-wide events are designed to bring all of our campers together towards common goals, and include old favorites like Color War and Wet and Wild Day. Campers also participate in weekly, smaller special events, like our Weekly Wacky Wednesday contest. Wacky Wednesday themes are sent home in our Friday newsletter every week, so keep an eye out for those. WATER SAFETY AND SWIMMING Learning to swim means much more than learning strokes; it is learning water survival skills, water safety, and developing comfort in the water. Water safety is about having an educated respect for the water, including an understanding of the layers of protection needed to keep ourselves and our loved ones safer when in, on, and around water. 8 SPECIALTY CAMPS NEW CHALLENGES WITH NEW FRIENDS. FLAG FOOTBALL CAMP (Ages 6-12, Weeks 1, 6 and 9) Open to children of all ability levels. Camp will focus on individual techniques such as: running with the ball, passing, receiving, creating space, accuracy and timing, running patterns and rules of the game. There is limited physical contact with other children. SPORTS GALORE CAMP (Ages 6-12, Weeks 1, 5, 8 and 9) The YMCA Sports Camp provides a combination of both planned and optional activities to give kids exposure to a variety of sports and recreational activities that build skills and confidence that lead to a lifetime of physical activity and wellness. Our enthusiastic and experienced counselors guide this multi-sport camp to provide a safe and fun environment for kids to play sports they already enjoy as well as try new activities. (tennis, wiffle ball, soccer, dodge ball, basketball, badmitten, kickball, swimming, volleyball, pickleball, etc.) BASKETBALL CLINIC (Ages 6-12, Weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8) We will provide personalized instruction and exciting competitive games designed to enhance individual and teamwork skills. Children will be grouped according to age and skill level. The YMCA Basketball coaches stress fundamentals in game situations. DANCE CAMP (Grades K-8, Weeks 2, 5 and 8) Learn Hip Hop, Modern, Jazz, Ballet, and more at Dance Camp. Camper-to-Staff Ratio: 15:1 TENNIS CAMP (Ages 6-12, Weeks 2-9) Improve forehand, backhand, overhead smash, lob, serve, and volley techniques. We provide campers with actual play experience that no drill can duplicate. Instructors will focus on each camper to ensure maximum improvement and provide each child with a positive learning environment. SOCCER CAMP (Ages 6-12, Weeks 3 and 7) Get ready for a week of soccer and other sporty fun. Kids play soccer in the morning, where we focus on building their skills and gaining confidence. In the afternoon, they ll enjoy more soccer, tabletop soccer games and more. Each day concludes with a soccer match. Your child will come home happy, tired and ready for more the next day. CHEER CAMP (Ages 6-12, Weeks 3 and 7) Cheer camp offers several options to fit your child s needs for any level of cheerleading. If you have never had any experience, if you want to cheer on a recreation league, junior high or high school team, all-star competition team...this is the camp for you. Our purpose and philosophy: to work as a team for the purpose of competitions, improvements of talent, and enjoyment of team building. To achieve the full potential of each participant through positive coaching and a positive environment. To build character, self-esteem, and confidence through encouragement and positive motivation. 8
9 SCIENCE CAMP (Grades 3-8, Weeks 3, 6 and 9) Become a creative scientist with us. Learn how to make slime, simulate volcano eruptions, and create play dough. Challenge your friends at building tall towers out of paper or marshmallows. Design a maze or learn how to fit your body through a single sheet of paper. Find out why popcorn pops and more. LACROSSE CAMP (Ages 8-12, Week 4) Lacrosse is a new and exciting addition to sports camp. The fastest growing sport rolls through to the summer. Boys and girls of all abilities are welcome as we will be working on all the introductory lacrosse drills, skill competitions, contests and games that can possibly be packed into three hours daily. Players must bring their own equipment. Full equipment required: helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, mouth guard and a stick. ELITE BASKETBALL CAMP (Ages 10-14/Grades 5-8, Week 5) This clinic focuses on getting middle school players ready for high level competition both physically and mentally. Players will perform a variety of basketball skills and drills each session, particularly the type they are likely to encounter at the high school level. Players will be put through all types of basketball and conditioning activities to ensure they will be prepared for the high demands they may face at tryouts and early season practices. The program also includes quickness and agility drills, speed training and core strengthening. NEW! FITNESS CAMP (Grades 6-8, Weeks 4 and 7) This new camp includes 4 hours of fun and fitness focusing on agility, cardio, games, strength and conditioning. Fitness Camp helps prepare young athletes for the demands of competitive sports. It is also designed to teach campers the correct form for weight training to help prevent future injuries. Under the supervision of nationally recognized certified personal trainers, campers will practice correct form while exercising, build strength, and improve endurance. The emphasis is on safety and learning how to lead a healthy lifestyle. Upon completion, campers will be completely confident and comfortable with their exercise program. 10 PERFORMING ARTS SPECIALTY BECOMING CONFIDENT AND INDEPENDENT. PERFORMING ARTS SPECIALTY CAMP gives your child the opportunity to explore the world of performing arts guided by knowledgeable and caring staff. Campers will learn new skills and expand their experiences by performing on a professional stage, they will also spend part of their afternoon enjoying a traditional camp schedule including swim lessons. POP PERFORMANCE CAMP (July 2-13) Campers will learn pop-rock vocal style and musical staging to be presented at the end of the session for parents and friends. LET S PUT ON A PLAY (July or August 13-24) During this two week drama arts camp, campers will learn what it takes to be a star. Actors will perform a short play at the end of the programs. Past camp shows featured plays based on popular children s movies such as Trolls, Descendants, etc. NEW IMPROV CAMP (July 30-August 10) This two-week workshop lead by a Second City and People s Improv Theatre trained instructor incorporates scene work, movement-based and group exercises to explore the fundamentals of improvisation making students more confident and trusting on stage. Campers will use their learned skills and incorporate it to a final performance. 10

12 SWIM TECH CAMP BUILDING CONFIDENCE AND A STRONG WORK ETHIC. SWIM TECH CAMP is dedicated to helping serious swimmers work on stroke development, conditioning, and preparation for the upcoming swim team season. Swimmers will benefit from stroke clinics, instructional videos, stretching and conditioning exercises. This camp is perfect for the competitive swimmer or for those looking to become a competitive swimmer. Limited to 30 campers per week. Prerequisite: Must have advanced swimming ability. 13 CIT PROGRAM BUILDING TOMORROW S LEADERS TODAY. The COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING PROGRAM teaches teens the job skills necessary to be a counselor and strong employee. Teens get the opportunity to develop leadership and program skills that will hopefully lead to a counselor position in the future. The focus is on small group dynamics, communication skills, teamwork and values clarification. CITs help to organize games and activities with the campers and assist the counselors with daily responsibilities. All CITs who participate in the CIT program this summer are invited to join us for a FREE last week of camp. We will wrap up the camp season and prepare our CITs for the transition to becoming camp counselors. To apply, please complete the CIT application including references on our Web site and return it to the Wayne YMCA by May 30, Interview required before acceptance. Upon acceptance, CITs must attend a pre-camp orientation. Date: Name on Card (Print): SIGNATURE PAYMENT SUMMARY PARENT/GUARDIAN AND YMCA AGREEMENT 5 Rules for Acceptance and Participation in Camp - They are the same for everyone without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. It is understood that all campers will be treated as individuals and respect will be shown for differences in tastes, preferences, abilities and range of behavior patterns. The Y reserves the right to dismiss a child from camp whose special needs we are not able to meet or whose conduct is not in the best interest of the total camp without refund. Current Membership and a $50 Deposit per week are required upon registration The registration deposit fee is applied to the total camp bill. Refund Policy - Deposit fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. It is understood that in the case of dismissal or voluntary withdrawal, There are NO Refunds of Camp FEES after May 15, If it is deemed advisable to dismiss a camper for medical reason, one-half of the unused portions of the session(s) will be refunded. Discipline Policy - I will review and reinforce the camper conduct and other camp policies with my child prior to the start of camp. Discipline at the Y is handled with much care and thought. Redirection and positive reinforcement are used to help children understand proper behavior. Campers not following the conduct policy may be suspended or expelled from camp with no refund. Other Fees - New registrations after May 15, 2018 will be charged a late registration fee of $50 (same day registration is an additional $50 and based on availability.) All requested changes must be submitted in writing. Additional fees may include the following: a late pick up fee of $15 per 15 minute intervals starting with your child s scheduled pick up time; and $35 for returned checks. Photography Policy - The Y has my permission to use any and all photographs taken of my child in camp activities in Y publicity. The YMCA values the privacy of its members. I do not wish my child to be photographed at camp. I have read all of the above information and I am fully aware of all of the terms and principles contained herein. All questions have been answered to my satisfaction. I agree that certain activities at the Y have risks which are inherent to the activity. No insurance has been included in membership or program fees. I further agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Y from any claims or demands arising out of any such injuries and losses.
