BROADMOOR Nature Camp Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary Natick, MA DISCOVER. EXPLORE. BE OUTSIDE! SUMMER 2018

ABOUT CAMP Broadmoor Summer Camp gives children ages 4 14 a chance to do what comes naturally: explore, have fun, and make friends! Campers experience nature and create lifelong memories through guided outdoor explorations and nature -inspired games, activities, and crafts. They also come to understand their place in nature, as well as the importance of preserving it. Low counselor -to-camper ratios ensure that children stay safe and engaged with role models who are creative, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. OUR CAMP DIRECTOR Melissa Hansen has been Broadmoor s Camp Director and education coordinator since When she is not facilitating camp, she s developing and running school programs and teacher professional development. Melissa has worked at nature-based school and camp programs in Maine, Rhode Island, and California. She earned a master of science degree in environmental education and a bachelor of science degree in wildlife biology. OUR CAMP EDUCATORS Our staff is passionate about sharing the joy and excitement of the outdoors with children. Sessions are staffed by lead educators who are college graduates with proven camp leadership experience, and by assistant educators who are at least 17 years old and have experience supervising children. All undergo a rigorous interview process that includes reference and background checks, and receive training in safety, child development, and nature study. 4 MINI DISCOVERERS Ages 4 & 5 Monday Friday, 9:00 am 1:00 pm $300, per session ANIMAL ARCHITECTS June 25 29; July 16 20; August 6 10 Which animal builds its house out of sticks? Which makes its home in a papery dome? And which digs tunnels in the dirt? Discover how different animals build their shelter and then craft your own, including a mini beaver lodge, a spiderweb, and a bird nest. After investigating each creature through observations and games, earn your own creature disk (like a Wild Kratt!) RAINBOW DETECTIVES July 9 13; July 30 August 3 Search for colors in nature each day and investigate some of nature s best color mysteries, including how wildlife uses color to camouflage and warn others to keep their distance. Through crafts, games, and experiments, explore color as light, learn about shadows, and compare what the color white looks like to people versus how it appears to insects and birds. WATER WONDERS July 2 6*; July Investigate where some strange animals and cool plants can make a home, but we can t: the water! How do they do it? Explore the marsh for plants that eat bugs, the vernal pool for fairy shrimp, and the stream for crayfish! Play games about finding food and shelter in the wild, draw and compare watery homes, and experiment with water. *No camp on July 4; this session is prorated: $240. He really loved the camp. Said he wants to go more weeks next year. - Parent of a Discoverer

DISCOVERERS Ages 5 & 6 Monday Friday, 9:00 am 3:00 pm, per session ANIMAL ARCHITECTS June 25 29; July HAVE TO HAVE A HABITAT July 9 13; August 6 10 Which animal builds its house out of sticks? Which makes its home in a papery dome? And which digs tunnels in the dirt? Discover how different animals build their shelter and then craft your own, including a mini beaver lodge, a spiderweb, and a bird nest. After investigating each creature through observations and games, earn your own creature disk (like a Wild Kratt!) Investigate forest, meadow, and wetland to find out where and how wildlife live. Make mini habitats and sing the Habitat Song. Learn about changes in plant communities playing Succession Tag and how animal populations change playing Oh, Deer! Go on scavenger hunts in search of food, water, and shelter, and create a field guide about your favorite animals and their habitats. RAINBOW DETECTIVES July 2 6*; July 30 August 3 Search for colors in nature each day and investigate some of nature s best color mysteries, including how wildlife uses color to camouflage and warn others to keep their distance. Through crafts, games, and experiments, explore color as light, learn about shadows, and compare what the color white looks like to people versus how it appears to insects and birds. WHAT S THE WEATHER? July 16 20; August Watch for seasonal patterns as you track the weather each day and keep a journal of pictures and words to document what you find. Learn to observe and measure the weather, plus make your own weather vane to determine which way the wind blows, a rain gauge to measure rain (though we don t want much during camp!), a cloud chart, and a thermometer. *No camp on July 4; this session is prorated: $296.

NATURALISTS Ages 7 & 8 Monday Friday, 9:00 am 3:00 pm, per one-week session $735, per two-week session** MAGIC CAMP BUS JOURNEY June 25 29; July WHO WOULD WIN?** July 9 20; July 30 August 10 Take a fictional journey through a story each morning, then go on a real journey on the sanctuary! Explore volcanic rock and erupt a volcano, and investigate habitat needs and build a mini habitat. Play the water cycle game and investigate a vernal pool; search for plants, flowers, and seeds; and make a craft about plant life cycles. Find predators and prey and play food chain games. WILD ABOUT BUGS July 2 6*; August Does a beetle have 6, 8, or 20 legs? Catch some and count for yourself! Search the forest for millipedes and ants, the water for dragonfly nymphs and diving beetles, and the meadow for grasshoppers and the elusive praying mantis. Campers will learn about arthropods, including insects and spiders, by designing buggy crafts, playing insect life cycle games, and singing songs about metamorphosis. *No camp on July 4; this session is prorated: $296. Who do you think would win a predacious diving beetle larva or a dragonfly nymph? A great blue heron or a water snake? Poison ivy or thorny catbrier? While we won t actually have them face off, we ll investigate the unique adaptations, strengths, and weaknesses of things living on the sanctuary. Play games about how adaptations are passed down in nature, go on wild scavenger hunts, create your own ultimate creature, and end the two-week session with your own collection of Who Would Win? stories! Everything runs really well. Our child looks forward to attending your camp and comes home after camp very happy and in a great mood. Staff is professional and friendly too. Can't ask for much more than that. Great job. - Parent of an Explorer

FROM SUN TO DIRT June 25 29; July Pretend you are a tree: What nutrients do you need to grow and survive, and how quickly can you get them? Play Race for the Sun to find out, plus meet a magic chlorophyll cell, and devise an experiment to prove that plants breathe. Play Food Chain Relay to learn how energy moves among plants and animals and back into the soil. Search for decomposers in the forest, and food chains in the marsh. Investigate the ways some organisms try to avoid being eaten while you play games such as Predator/Prey and Camouflage. HOW IT S MADE EXPLORERS Ages 9 & 10 Monday Friday, 9:00 am 3:00 pm, per one-week session $800, per two-week session** July 2 6*; August Explore the sanctuary to see how people have used natural materials like plants and stone to create things they needed, such as tools for hunting or grinding grain, and insulation for structures. Use games, activities, and observations to investigate how nature is the master of form and function, from photosynthesis in plants to silent flight in owls. Try your hand at biomimicry the art of imitating something found in nature to design or improve an idea of your choice. *No camp on July 4; this session is prorated: $296. EXPEDITION BROADMOOR** July 9 20; July 30 August 10 Imagine exploring uncharted territory like Lewis and Clark, or Darwin on the Beagle. Become a scientist and investigate the sanctuary like you never have before: Sample plots of land to identify ecosystem characteristics and plant communities, collect usable data on local species Mass Audubon is tracking, and use the scientific method to replicate miniature ecosystems. Create your own unique map of the sanctuary, tracking the aspect of nature that appeals most to you, explorer. End the two-week session with campout at Broadmoor.

VOYAGERS Ages Monday Friday, 9:00 am 3:00 pm $450, per one-week session $1,250, per two-week session** CANOE THE RIVER WILD July 2 6*; July 23 27; August Canoe local sections of the Charles River to explore the ecology of a complicated and beautiful environment. Make a watershed model, evaluate water health by examining aquatic life and water chemistry, and track invasive species. Improve your paddling skills and learn more about nature, through a boat-based games of Food Chain Tag and Canoe Football. Certified, experienced staff will provide guidance on technical paddling and water safety practices. Campers will travel off-site most days. *No camp on July 4; this session is prorated: $360. CLIMATE CAPERS** July 9 20 Get your science on while unraveling weather and climate! Measure and track weather using tools you create, visit a weather monitoring station, and decipher historic patterns and trends in both weather and bird migration. Understand the interactions between carbon, water, and wind in modulating Earth s climate by making an ocean-current model and acting out the carbon cycle. Visit with scientists and explore natural communities to see the effects of climate change. Spend two nights camping on Cape Cod, go on a coastal bike ride, and visit Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Campers will travel off-site most days. ECOSYSTEMS EXPLORERS** July 30 August 10 Investigate some of Massachusetts lesser-known ecosystems on daily adventures and explorations around the state. Visit a cedar swamp, a bog, an urban park, a wet meadow, the rocky coast, and a mountain. Learn about natural selection and evolution through the Bird Survival Challenge, biodiversity through scavenger hunts and surveys, and the energy flow that keeps ecosystems functioning through new food chain games. Camp out for two nights at Mass Audubon s Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary and venture out on a day hike to the summit of Mount Wachusett. Campers will travel off-site most days. With more than 125,000 members and supporters, we advocate on Beacon Hill and beyond, and conduct conservation research to preserve the natural heritage of our beautiful state for today s and future generations. We welcome you to explore a nearby sanctuary, find inspiration, and get involved. Learn how at massaudubon.org. We absolutely loved the experience this camp gave our daughter. We will absolutely send her back next year! -Parent of a Mini Discoverer Thank you for once again providing a fantastic opportunity to learn about the natural world. - Parent of a Naturalist Connect With Us
