2 ABOUT CAMP Stony Brook Day Camp in Norfolk gives children with a curiosity about nature the chance to do what comes naturally: explore! Weekly sessions have campers ages 3 15 discovering Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary s forest, fields, and wetlands.trail explorations, hands-on activities, games, crafts, and more provide full ecosystem immersion for an enhanced learning experience. Small group sizes ensure a welcoming, supportive environment. OUR CAMP STAFF Our staff is passionate about sharing the joy and excitement of the outdoors with campers.year after year, we receive exceptional feedback about our counselors creativity, knowledge, and enthusiasm. Camp staff are carefully selected for their maturity, caring attitude towards children, and competence in the fields of natural history, outdoor education, and leadership. All undergo a thorough background check and receive prior training in safety, child development, and nature study prior; and all are first aid and CPR certified. OUR CAMP DIRECTOR Marla Cohen joined the Mass Audubon family in In 2001, she became Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary s Camp Director and education coordinator. Marla holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Ohio University. Outside of camp, she spends her time teaching and coordinating school, scout, and public programs for children and families. 3 Camper Groups and Fees Each session has a different theme to investigate. Age-appropriate activities deepen each camper s knowledge and awareness as they return throughout the summer and over the years. Please see page five for weekly themes. You can register for camp one of three ways: call us at , mail the registration form included in this brochure, or register online at massaudubon.org/stonybrookcamp. Puddle Jumpers Age 3 Half Day 9:00 am 12:00 pm Fee: $156m/$220nm Encourage your preschooler s curiosity about nature. Under the trained eye of our camp staff, Puddle Jumpers will search for busy birds, slimy salamanders, stinky skunk cabbage, and wiggling worms at Stony Brook. Outdoor explorations are reinforced with crafts, games, songs, and stories. Weeks available are June 19 23, July 3 7, July 17 21, and July 31 August 4. All participants must be potty trained. Counselor-to-camper ratio is 1 to 5. Discoverers Ages 4 5 Half Day 9:00 am 12:00 pm Fee: $156m/$220nm Young children are naturally curious about the outdoors: eager to see a turtle, smell a flower, feel the cool underside of a log, and search for animal homes in the woods. Outdoor explorations are combined with crafts, games, songs, and stories to give Discoverers an introduction to the plants and animals that share their world. Counselor-to-camper ratio is 1 to 5. Wanderers Ages 5 6 Full Day 9:00 am 3:30 pm Fee: $265m/$330nm Wanderers learn about the different ecosystems that exist at Stony Brook and what may be found in them. Simple observations and investigations provide a foundation of interest and desire to learn more in years to come. Wanderers begin their initiation to the natural world through short hikes, hands-on activities, and creative endeavors. Counselor-to-camper ratio is 1 to 5. Ramblers Ages 7 8 Full Day 9:00 am 3:30 pm Fee: $265m/$330nm Ramblers become more involved with ecosystem investigations at Stony Brook. During their daily outings, using their senses to identify familiar species of plants and animals, Ramblers are encouraged to explore their own areas of interest as well as further their social skills as they participate in activities, games and crafts. Counselor-to-camper ratio is 1 to 8. Explorers Ages 9 10 Full Day 9:00 am 3:30 pm Fee: $265m/$330nm Explorers are involved with in-depth studies of their surrounding environment, focusing on more complex ecological concepts as they explore the far reaches of the sanctuary. Counselor-to-camper ratio is 1 to 10.

4 Weekly Themes Tail Tales June 19 23* Some of the best children s books are based on nature s many wonders. Delve into the stories behind why bats fly at night, why toads eat thier skin, and where dinosaur rock came from! Join us as we explore both the imaginary and real world of nature. Sign up by day or for the whole week. Special Price $55m/$68nm per day; half day $34m/$47nm per day. Claws, Paws, and Jaws June Predators are truly amazing creatures. From their sharp teeth to their long claws, they are magnificent! Campers will discover the impressive features and adaptations of several top predators in North America. They will learn how sharp shark teeth are or if an owl can really turn its head all the way around. Join us as we learn about these and many other predators including some surprisingly small predators like the ladybugs and praying mantids. Go Green! July 3 7* Bugstruck! July Here s a week of camp that ll make Mother Nature proud! Learn eco-friendly ways to help keep the Earth green. Explore the natural environment and engage in activities in science and art that reinforce each day s message such as planting trees, composting, and making art with recycled materials. No Camp July 4. Sign up by day or for the whole week. Special Price $55m/$68nm per day; half day $34m/$47nm per day. Do you love bugs? We ll learn about bugs and the other crawling critters while leaving no log unturned, no web unadmired, and no net dusty in our quest to observe these animals in action. Let your heart sing (or buzz) with adventure! Nature s Hide & Seek July 17 21* Who doesn t love to play hide and seek?! Discover how animals use camouflage to both hide and seek during this week of camp. Explore the various adaptations of animals that enable them to hide in the wild. In addition, we will create our own letterboxes for others to find. Seriously Slimy Science July One day of slime...it s just not enough. So join us for some serious slime. Be warned: this is the most sticky, slimy, ooey-gooey week ever! Explore fun-damental scientific methods, participate in dastardly experiments, join us for the first ever camp-wide slug race, and lots more! Wonderfully Wacky Water Week July 31 August 4* Become a waterdrop and take a wild ride beginning in rivers, lakes, and oceans. Where does water come from? Where does it go? Dip a net into the ponds at Stony Brook and make your own aquascope! Wild About Art August 7 11 Camp Rewind August Use your creativity to find things in nature to turn into art. Let your creativity flow as we look for inspiration on the sanctuary. Paint your own turtle, make mud parfaits, and decoupage your own vase. We will explore the pond, field, and forest to help create our masterpieces. What was your favorite part of camp? Did you love the crazy potions? Did you want to make just one more gnome home? Do you want to scream ALLIGATOR one more time? Then you re in luck. This is the week that you get to plan as we put the entire summer on rewind! * Puddle Jumpers sign up available these weeks

5 Specialty Sessions It s Art, Naturally Ages July 3 7 9:00 am 3:30 pm Fee: $240m/$305nm Be inspired by the natural beauty around us through the lens of nature and the grounds of Stony Brook. With drawing materials, cardboard, papier-mache, and recycled and found objects, we will create functional and decorative masterpieces of all shapes and sizes. No Camp July 4. Adventurers: Science on the Sanctuary Ages July :00 am 3:30 pm Fee: $265m/$330nm Who knew that studying the ecosystems at Stony Brook could be so rewarding and fun! During the week we will venture into the science that makes our research programs happen. Activities will include dragonfly mark and recapture, turtle and wetland surveys, biodiversity, conservation-based games, and more! Grossology Ages 9 11 July :00 am 3:30 pm Fee: $288m/$353nm Believe us when we say this camp is gross! Have a blast exploring the messy, icky, stinky side of science. Discover a wide range of things from slime and snot to germs and smelly concoctions. Yes, it is disgusting; every day is a perfect adventure in gross. This program includes an optional overnight Thursday evening. Campers may stay overnight or leave at 9:30 pm after the night hike and return Friday morning. Outdoor Leadership Camp Ages July 31 August 4 9:00 am 3:30 pm Fee: $307m /$372nm Do you have what it takes to be a leader? Challenge yourself to find out! Work on your leadership skills while having fun with other teens! Together you will enjoy powerful leaderbased initiatives as well as time-honored camp activities. You ll design and implement a community service project, and develop kid-friendly nature activities that will prepare you to succeed as a Counselor-in-Training (CIT). This program includes a canoe trip and a late-evening meal and campfire with the staff on Thursday (pick-up at 10 pm). Mysteries, Maps and Riddles Ages July :00 am 3:30 pm Fee: $288m/$353nm Can you figure it out? What s that? Who did it? Where are we? Join us for a brainteasing week of puzzles. Become a detective, discover new places, and have fun with friends while trying to unravel the mysteries of camp. This program includes an optional overnight Thursday evening. Campers may stay overnight or leave 9:30 pm after the night hike and return Friday morning. Hawkwarts Ages 9 11 August :00 am 3:30 pm Fee: $288m/$353nm Calling all young muggles! Hawkwarts School of Magic and Mystery is now enrolling. Find us through Platform 9 3/4 and meet some of Hedwig s feathered friends. These powerful creatures will be our guides as wizards and muggles alike explore the enchanted forests and fields in search of their homes. Leave the Muggle world behind and join us on this magical raptor experience with daily hikes, games, and crafts. This program includes an optional overnight Thursday evening. Campers may stay overnight or leave at 9:30 pm after the night hike and return Friday morning. After Camp Option July 10 August 11 Monday Friday, 3:30 6:00pm Fee: $85/camper/week This option is available to all full-day campers. Campers who sign up for this option will need to bring a second snack. After our snack, campers will work on additional crafts, go hiking, and play games. Counselors-in-Training (CITs) Teens ages are invited to experience the fun, challenges, and rewards of camp as they assist Stony Brook camp counselors. Participants will learn valuable leadership skills as they work with campers and participate in the planning and implementation of weekly 6 activities such as nature projects, crafts, songs, and games. 7 Camp Registration Information To Register for Camp: Visit massaudubon.org/ stonybrookcamp Call Mail or bring this form and payment to: Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary 108 North Street Norfolk, MA Registration Confirmation A confirmation containing important documents and information will be sent once your camper s registration has been processed. Deposit A nonrefundable deposit of $50/ camper/camp week is required to register for camp. The deposit will be applied to your camp tuition and cannot be transferred to another camper, family, or camp location. If registering after May 15, payment in full is required (unless a payment plan has been established with the Camp Director). Mass Audubon Membership Discount Mass Audubon members at the Family level or above receive a discounted rate. To qualify, your membership must be current through your camper s last session, and you must be the parent, grandparent, or legal guardian of the camper being enrolled. Membership can be purchased or renewed at the time of registration. Financial Aid Financial assistance is available based on demonstrated economic need and available funds, and is generally limited to one session per child; however, all applications are considered. Applications are due by April 15. Please call the Camp Director to request an application or download one at massaudubon.org/campforms. Payment Plans Payment plan options are available. Please contact the Camp Director for more information. Refund Policy A full refund, minus the nonrefundable deposit, is provided to camp families who cancel in writing on or before May 15. After May 15 no refund is available. Lost deposits are not transferable, and refunds are not given for participant dismissal, failure to attend, absence, or sick days. If we must cancel a session, you will receive a full refund. Important Deadlines All camp forms, waivers, and the balance of your camp tuition are due by May 15. If registering after May 15, payment in full is required and a specific camp form deadline will be set for you. A camper cannot attend camp and his/her spot is not guaranteed until all forms, waivers, and payments are completed (or a payment plan has been established). A fee of $25 per camper will be charged for incomplete or late forms and waivers. Camper Requirements Due to the outdoor and exploratory nature of our camp program, campers must be able to move about on uneven terrain. Campers are expected to meaningfully participate in ageappropriate activities, including nature study. If your camper has special conditions, needs, or limitations, you must speak with the Camp Director annually prior to registering to determine whether your camper can be accommodated at camp. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal without refund. All campers must follow stated behavior expectations and safety rules. The camp director reserves the right to dismiss a camper when, in his/her judgement, the camper s behavior interferes with the rights of others or the smooth functioning of the group or activity, or violates the camp s behavior policy. In such cases no refunds will be provided. Camp License Our camp complies with the regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (105 CMR 430) and is licensed by the Norfolk Board of Health. ACA Accreditation We are proud to be accredited by the American Camp Association. Developed exclusively for the camp industry, this nationally recognized program focuses on program quality, and health and safety, management, and camp operations. Camp Policy Requests You may request copies of our background check, health care, discipline, bullying, and grievance policies at any time. Buddy Requests One buddy request per camper will be honored when possible. Both campers must be the same age and both must request each other. All buddy requests must be made in writing at least one week prior to the first day of camp. Please indicate on your registration form if you would like your camper to be placed with a friend of the same age. Campouts If your child is participating in a specialty session with a campout, you will receive a packing list by .
