Come pick your Parent Handbook, schedules, t-shirts and stick around for an Q&A with the Camp Directors and find out more about swimming, our policies, what's new this summer, pick up/drop off, field trips & more! OUR CAMP PHILOSOPHY Every camper has the right to a happy and safe summer. All JCC camps feature a child-centered program focusing on the individual needs of each camper and the collective needs of each camp group. Our goal is to help each camper develop new skills and a greater appreciation of his/her capabilities. Additionally, we hope to provide a community setting whereby children will have the ability and confidence to explore new realms and meet new friends. We are all here for the campers. Every experience is a learning experience and it is the responsibility of the counselors to provide a well-rounded program for all children. Camp Rimon Katan (ages 2 through Pre-K) The Camp Rimon Katan schedule is based upon interactive activities centered on weekly themes. Our themes this summer are different every week and are all centered on engaging your children in learning through cooperative play. Like all camps at the JCC, learning about Judaica and Israel are seamlessly woven into all activities. Campers in the Pre-K and threes programs will have up to three field trips during the summer. Our entering Pre-K Campers will also have the option to travel by school bus to Escalante Pool in Tempe for supervised Free Swim and water activities. Swim days will be Monday and Friday for Camp Rimon Katan. Swimming will begin Monday, June 5. Campers will depart at 10:45am on the bus and arrive back at the JCC by 12:45pm. Splashpad days (for campers 3 years of age) will also be on Monday and Friday. Campers will depart for Espee Park around 9:15am and return by 10:45am. Our Two year old groups will have water play at the JCC on Mondays and Fridays. Camp Rimon Gadol (entering Kindergarten-9 th grade) Camp Rimon Gadol provides campers with weekly programs including art, sports, cooking, music, electives, group activities and Israeli Culture. Depending on the age group, campers will attend up to 1-2 field trips off site each week. Our younger campers will visit Escalante Pool for swimming twice a week, and our older campers will visit Hamilton Pool in Chandler for supervised free swim and water activities. Swim days will be Tuesday and Thursday for Kindergarten and 3rd - 9th grades and Monday and Friday for 1st/2nd grades. Swimming will begin Monday, June 5. Grades 1st/2nd will depart at 10:45am on the bus and return by 12:45 pm Mondays and Fridays. Kindergarten will depart by 10:45 am and return by 12:45 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Grades 3rd & Up will depart at 1pm and return by 3pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please see the next page for more detailed information on swimming. CIT Program (entering Grade 10-12) 3

4 This innovative leadership program is specifically designed to help our 10 th through 12th grade campers develop and cultivate their leadership skills. With guidance from excellent staff, participants learn and practice skills of successful leaders. Throughout the summer, they work with younger campers, putting their new skills into action. This program is an excellent way for your young adult to experience summer camp at its best! CAMP HOURS The JCC opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. Regular camp hours run from 9 a.m. 3:30 p.m. If you are in the building and need to reach someone from camp, please see one of our front-desk personnel. If you have billing or registration questions, please see Sharon in the front office. If we are not available when you call, please leave a voic message and we will call you back as soon as possible. SWIMMING Swimming is an integral part of the JCC camp program. It is both a social and a learning experience for the campers. Transportation to and from Escalante pool is on an air-conditioned, yellow school bus leased from the Kyrene School District using a Kyrene School District certified bus driver. Our school bus is equipped with seat belts in every seat and children are required to wear them. Escalante Pool is located at 2150 E. Orange St., Tempe. Our 2-year old camp group will have water play at the JCC twice a week on Mondays and Fridays. More information will be provided during the summer season. We ask that you dress your child in their bathing suits, water shoes, and apply a first layer of sunscreen before coming to camp if you arrive at 9:00 am. Otherwise, please bring bathing suits, towels, sunscreen and a change of clothes including shoes. 4

5 Our 3-year old camp group will visit the Espee Park Splashpad twice a week on Mondays and Fridays. We ask that you dress your child in their bathing suits, water shoes and apply a first layer of sunscreen before coming to camp if you arrive at 9:00 am. More information will be provided during the summer season. We ask that you bring bathing suits (if you arrive before 9:00), towels, sunscreen and a change of clothes, including shoes. Espee Park is located at 450 E Knox Rd, Chandler, AZ If you have further questions or concerns about swimming, we highly recommend that you come to Meet the Directors Night at the JCC on Thursday, May 25 th from 5-7pm. This will provide the chance for you to talk with your child s camp director during this time. Free swim will be supervised by Escalante and Hamilton pool lifeguards and EVJCC counselors and directors. SWIMMING for CAMP RIMON GADOL 3rd grade and up This year, our older campers will be attending the Hamilton Aquatic Center, located at 3838 S Arizona Ave, Chandler, AZ Each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, our older campers through 9 th graders will go swimming at Hamilton.. They will provide certified lifeguards for the safety of our children in addition to the EVJCC staff supervision. Don't forget your towels, sunscreen, a labeled water bottle and dry clothes as well! (EVERYTHING should be labeled with first and last names, please.) EARLY CARE & AFTER CARE Early Care begins at 7 a.m., for children who need to be dropped off at camp early and are registered in advance for extended care. Campers are assigned an Early Care area. This information will be posted in the front lobby. Camp staff will be available to help provide directions to everyone the first few days of camp. For all age groups, please drop your child s lunch in the fridge in their room or designated area, and then drop your child off in the designated area. Parents must sign their children in before leaving with first initial and last name. After Care for campers, who are registered in advance for extended care, begins at 3:30 p.m. in their designated camp rooms. You or your designee (listed on the blue card with a picture ID) will need to write your full first name, last name and time of sign out. After Care concludes at 6 p.m., after 6:01 p.m., we charge a late fee of $10/minute. We rely heavily on our staff to provide the quality care that you expect. Please do not inconvenience them by abusing this policy. During Early and After Care, children participate in organized activities under the supervision and guidance of our summer camp staff. Although it is necessary that all children be pre-registered for both Early and After Care, emergencies do arise. If you find that you need last minute care, please call the front office to make sure that your child is added to our Early/After Care list for the day. There is a $8.00/hour fee for any portion of an hour with 24 hours notice and a $12/hour fee for any portion of an hour with less than 24 hours notice; $10/minute after 5

6 6:01. Reservations must be made at the front desk. PICK-UP & DROP OFF Camp begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. in your child s camp room for ALL camps. Camp ends at 3:30 p.m. unless your camper has a half-day which ends at 1:00 p.m. Please remember that if your child is not here for the bus to go on a field trip or to the pool, you will be responsible for taking them to that activity. In an effort to ensure a safe and secure camp setting, it is expected that parents or a parent designee (adults, aged 18 or older only please) of children will sign their children into and out of camp each and every day. The JCC, and specifically the camp program, cannot be responsible for children before they are checked into their scheduled program or after they are checked out of their scheduled program. Due to the fact that we have carefully established ratios, we will be unable to care for children prior to ten minutes before the start of camp without previous notice. For Camp Rimon Gadol (school-age), the sign in/out books, during Early Care, will be located in the front lobby on a table underneath the Camp Photos monitor. At the end of your camper s day please go to your child s sign out location to sign your child out of camp. In order to sign your child out, you or your designee (listed on the blue emergency card with a picture ID) will need to write their first name, last name, and time of sign out on our sign-in/sign-out sheet. If you are unable to arrive by 3:30, please call the front desk at to let them know and your child will be placed into Late Stay. Children not picked up by 3:40 p.m. will automatically be placed into Late Stay and parents will be charged accordingly ($10/hour per child). If it is necessary for you to pick up your child before 3:30 p.m., please give verbal or written notice to your child's counselor on that day or prior. It is necessary for all campers to be checked out with either your child s counselor, or one of the Camp Directors before they leave the premises early. For Camp Rimon Gadol (school-age), the sign in/out books, during Late Care, will be located outside of the MPR. BEHAVIOR/DISCIPLINE/CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT We are deeply committed to do all we can to make each child s experience at our summer camp an enjoyable and positive one. We need your support and cooperation. Our philosophy at the JCC is strongly based on a positive approach to camp group management. In order to provide your child with optimum opportunities, the camp group needs to be a stimulating and exciting environment within a well-organized framework. Our counselors are committed to meeting both the needs of the individual and the needs of the group. Their expectations for camp behavior are based on appropriate developmental levels. All children are expected to behave in a manner that is acceptable to our camp standards. If a child behaves in an unacceptable manner, the child is redirected, shadowed, or removed from the activity for a brief period. Positive guidance and positive reinforcement are used as much as 6

7 possible to encourage the child to behave in an acceptable manner. Unacceptable behavior is defined as that which is disruptive to the group as a whole during structured activity time, or behavior which may be harmful or unsafe to students or adults. If these techniques are not successful, parents will be asked to meet with the Camp Directors. If a child is asked to leave camp due to behavior issues, all paid camp fees are forfeited. Consequences for Inappropriate Behavior If a counselor is unable, through discussion with a camper, to solve the problem, the counselors will bring the camper to camp administration (Camp Directors), where the following procedures will be implemented: 1. First Time- The counselor gives a warning which includes a clear understanding of the concern and some alternative behaviors that should be used in the future. 2. Second Time- The counselors gives a second warning and the Director sends communication to parent(s) explaining the concern. 3. Third Time- A conference with the camper, parent(s), Director(s), will be arranged to discuss a plan of action for resolution of the concern. This could include suspension from camp for a period of time. No refunds will be made for any time the camper is suspended due to inappropriate behavior. In addition, the Director reserves the right to send any camper home if s/he determines that certain behavior does not conform to the health, safety or philosophical standards of camp. Your child s activities and times may vary from this schedule. Schedules for camp groups change by day and week during the course of the summer. Before each and every field trip attendance is taken and a copy of that form is handed to the front office. Campers are not allowed to leave field trips early unless a camp director has been notified with a written request, and you will need to sign out that camper(s) at the field trip site. We will not release a camper to anyone unless previous written arrangements have been made with our front office and camp director. On occasion, a field trip may require a waiver in order for your child to be allowed to participate on the trip. THINGS TO BRING Please adhere to the following information to ensure your child s physical comfort and safety. 1. Label everything with your child s name. (hats, towels, goggles, water shoes, sunscreen, etc.). 2. On swimming/splashpad days, campers should come to camp wearing their swimsuit under their clothes and pack a towel and underwear (and tennis shoes for after swim time) in their camp bag or backpack. 3. Sunscreen! Please apply sunscreen to your child before they arrive for camp and send them with some as well. We will always apply sunscreen before going to the pool, so please send your child with sunscreen. We cannot provide sunscreen for every child and sharing of sunscreen is not permitted. Please help us and send your child with their own bottle of labeled sunscreen. The signed release on the camp application will serve as permission for your child's camp counselor to reapply sunscreen throughout the camp day. 4. Younger children should bring a second change of clothes to be kept in their cubby at camp. All campers should be dressed for physical activity. Please do not send your camper with expensive clothing and/or footwear. 8

9 5. A hat for camp is optional, but advisable for all outdoor activities. Please tell your child that you expect him/her to wear a hat during outside activities. T-SHIRTS Every child who attends camp will receive one complimentary camp T-Shirt. Additional shirts may be available for purchase at the front desk. ALL CAMPERS SHOULD WEAR THEIR CAMP T-SHIRTS FOR ALL FIELD TRIPS. For veteran camp families, if the current camp T-shirt is unavailable, please have your camper(s) wear a previous year s shirt. DRESS CODE Tennis shoes (sneakers) are required. No dress shoes, jellies, flip-flops, or sandals should be worn (except at the pool). Only closed-toe shoes are acceptable. Children will not be allowed to participate in activities for which they do not have the appropriate footwear. Campers should come to camp dressed appropriately, no undergarments should be seen. GENERAL MEDICAL INFORMATION Individuals certified in CPR and first aid will be on staff in the building from 7 a.m. until closing at 6 p.m. 1. Please inform the Camp Directors and your child s counselors regarding any allergies, dietary restrictions or any medical concerns that is important for us to know about. Also, please include this information on the medical form which is available at the front desk. 2. Arizona State Law permits us to dispense prescription medication from the original container only. WE CANNOT DISPENSE OVER-THE COUNTER MEDICATION WITHOUT A PARENT S/GUARDIAN S PRESCRIPTION (Tylenol, Triaminic, Pepto-Bismol, etc.) We encourage you to give your child medication at home whenever possible. Please inform the staff when your child is on medication. If your child needs medication while at Camp, you must fill out the request for giving medication form available in the front office. DO NOT SEND MEDICATIONS WITH YOUR CHILD. Medication is to be left at the front desk. ALL MEDICATIONS WILL ONLY BE ADMINISTERED BY OUR ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM. 3. If your child requires an epi-pen or an inhaler, this will need a Request for giving prescription medication form filled (available in the front office) and be checked in with the child s counselor. NO CHILD MAY CARRY THEIR OWN MEDICATION NO MATTER THEIR AGE, INCLUDING CIT s. It is the parent/guardian s responsibility to check out the item each day with the counselor and to bring it back the next day. The Epi-Pen or inhaler needs to be labeled and it is the parent s/guardian s responsibility to provide an action plan to the Camp Director, meaning the signs and symptoms that the child needs one of these items. 4. For overnight lock-ins or trips, it is the parent s/guardian s responsibility to drop off any medication in its original container with the Request for giving prescription medication form filled out in its entirety. This is for prescription medication as well any over-the-counter medication. 9

10 5. If your child wears hearing aids, ear plugs, glasses, or contact lenses, the counselor will take special care in helping your child maintain responsibility for these items. ACCIDENT PROCEDURES In case of an accident, all necessary first aid procedures will be used. We will first try to notify the parents/guardians. If this is not possible, we will notify the listed emergency contacts. If it is impossible to reach any of the above, we will attempt to make contact according to the emergency form listings you provide to us. Extreme emergencies may dictate other procedures deemed in the child s best interests. Whenever a child is injured, regardless of the seriousness of the injury, a parent or guardian may be required to sign an accident form. In addition, all scrapes and cuts will be documented on an Ouch Report or Accident Report with a copy sent home with families as well as a copy secured in the child s individual file. Always make sure you notify the front desk immediately of any changes to your contact information on your Medical/Emergency Form. HEAT POLICY Outdoor Physical activity is limited over the summer. Children will remain indoors and there will be no physical activity outdoors when the temperature reaches over 100 degrees with the exception of water/pool activities. Campers are given frequent water breaks and must bring a water bottle, hat and wear sunscreen. ELECTRONICS, CELL PHONES AND MONEY POLICY 1. Campers are not permitted to use cell phones during camp hours. If campers are seen calling or texting, counselors will ask the camper to put their phone away. The second time, they will be asked to keep their phone at home the following day. If you must reach your child, call the front desk at and a staff member will get your child to a phone to speak to you. 2. Any personal electronic devices including but not limited to IPads, Ipods, laptops, video games will not be allowed to be used during camp. DO NOT SEND THESE WITH YOUR CHILD TO CAMP. 3. Please do not send your child to camp with valuable toys, jewelry, or money. If you choose to allow your child to bring any of these items, camp will not be held responsible for these or other similar items. In regards to card games such as Pokemon, the JCC will also not be responsible for any lost, damaged or traded cards. 4. When your child s group goes on a field trip, all beverages, admission fees and transportation are provided by the camp. PLEASE DO NOT SEND MONEY ON THESE TRIPS; CAMPERS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO SPEND IT. STAFF TRAINING AND REQUIREMENTS Camp Rimon takes the importance of the safety and protection of our campers in our program very seriously. Our camp staff and volunteers have policies, procedures and guidelines that are strictly enforced when working with children. The following is a list of proven safety practices: Comprehensive pre-employment screening for all staff members including background checks, 10

11 criminal history checks, fingerprint clearance, and reference checks. Attendance is taken at each activity and staff is trained to maintain visual contact with children at all times. All staff is trained to be aware of intruders, hazardous situations or areas and unsafe practices. Emergency drills and other drills will be practiced during training and during regular camp hours with campers Anyone signing a child out of camp MUST be listed on the Medical Emergency Form and provide proper identification at the front office. The JCC must have, through written notification, permission from the parent/guardian for that day. The JCC provides a minimum of 24 hours of training throughout the year for our staff. This includes, but is not limited to water safety, emergency drills/evacuation, bullying, first aid, CPR, customer service, class management, program planning and program execution. WEEKLY UPDATES Parents will receive a weekly camp newsletter on each Friday via . Please read for any upcoming changes to the camp schedule. LOST & FOUND Any lost article without a name will be placed in a box labeled LOST AND FOUND. This box will be kept in the Front Office. On Fridays, all articles will be sorted and hopefully returned to the owners. You are welcome to check the lost and found at anytime. Any articles not claimed after the summer will be donated to a charitable organization. PLEASE REMEMBER before you leave the premises with your camper at the end of each day to check backpacks and lunchboxes for items that may have been left behind. Counselors are not responsible for ensuring that items belonging to campers are located at the end of each camp day. SHABBAT (FRIDAYS AT CAMP) Shabbat starts sundown on Friday until sundown on Saturday. It is the Sabbath and a special time. To celebrate Shabbat at camp, we will have a special schedule. For ages 2 through Pre-K, this includes classroom activities. In addition, Twos and Threes will have their Kabbalat Shabbat celebration at 11:30 am on Fridays while Pre-K will have their celebration at 3:00 pm on Fridays in the Dance Studio. For school-age children, K and up, campers will celebrate Shabbat together in the MPR around 2:30pm, times may vary depending on field trips and activities. Families are invited to join us around 2:30pm. Please check with your camper s counselor for the location of the Shabbat program if you would like to join your child. ROCK SHOW The Camp Rimon Katan Rock Show will take place at the JCC on Thursday, July 27th from 5-6pm in the Multi-Purpose Room. This is for campers ages 2-Pre-K. The Camp Rimon Gadol Rock Show will be held for all campers on Tuesday, July 18th during Week 7 of camp. It will be located at the Chandler Community Center from 6:30-8:00pm, 125 E. Commonwealth Ave, Chandler, AZ More information will be forthcoming as the Rock 11

12 Show approaches! FIELD TRIPS During the summer, campers will go on field trips and return to camp by 3:30 p.m. The signed release on the camp registration form will serve as permission for local excursions. We must know the day prior to the field trip day if your camper will be picked up before 3:30 p.m. BIRTHDAYS DURING CAMP If your child celebrates a birthday while they are enrolled in camp, we offer the following option: If you choose to bring in a snack for your child s group, it must be Kosher, pre-packaged and nut-free. Feel free to ask a Camp Director for suggestions. All campers celebrating birthdays will have Happy Birthday sung in their honor during morning assembly or in the classrooms. Invitations for Saturday parties and for specific children, including same gender-only parties in a group may not be distributed at camp. If you choose to distribute invitations to fellow campers, it must be given to all children in the camp group. You may ask the director for a list of s and contact information. FOOD POLICIES 1. The JCC is aware of the number of different food allergies. We would like to make camp a safe place for all campers. The JCC asks all parents to notify Camp Directors of your child s allergies. The JCC is peanut/tree nut aware facility. We ask that campers not bring foods that contain peanut butter or tree nuts or that are processed in a plant using these products. 2. All lunches from home will be kept cool. We ask that lunches come in a lunch bags or soft sided lunch boxes. For groups that have overnights, please send your camper with two lunches: one marked today and the second marked tomorrow to be consumed the day after the overnight. Please write your child s name on all lunchboxes or lunch bags. 3. There is one microwave in each camp room so that your camper(s) will be able to warm up their lunch. The counselors will be the only ones allowed to use the microwave and will be able to prepare lunch food. Please keep in mind when packing your child s lunch with a warm-up, to not pack a frozen meal. 4. All summer, Camp Rimon participates in the Chandler Unified School District Summer Food Program. Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided to all campers beginning on Monday, June 5th. Menus will be provided at the front desk. For pre-camp (May 25-June 2) and for weeks 7, 8 and 9, please provide additional snacks in your child s lunchboxes. 5. All campers will spend time outdoors; therefore campers should drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day. Mandatory water breaks are scheduled at least every 15 minutes during outdoor activities. Water is always available during lunch and snack breaks. Please also pack a labeled water bottle for your camper(s) that they can continue to fill throughout the day. 12

13 SICK CHILD/HEALTH POLICIES 1. Parents, or designated caretakers, of children who exhibit ANY of the following symptoms will be called to come to the JCC to pick up their child within a one hour time period: Fever of 100 degrees and above Diarrhea 2 episodes Vomiting 2 episodes Rashes Campers displaying any of the above symptoms will be removed from class and brought to the designated area in the office to rest until parents/caregiver can pick- up. 2. Although the presence of a runny nose, clear or colored, may appear ominous, exclusion from school is not necessary unless accompanied by any of the symptoms listed in #1. 3. Please do not bring your child into the program with any of the above mentioned symptoms. If in doubt about your child, please keep your child at home. 4. It is highly unfair to healthy staff members and children to expose them unnecessarily to illness. Remember also, that once a virus begins in a group, it becomes very difficult to control. Please be considerate of others. 5. Please alert the office when your child develops a communicable disease (chicken pox, strep throat, pinkeye, head lice, etc.) so that we can notify the other families of a possible exposure date. All names are kept confidential. Knowing what is going around in a class will help in early treatment and possibly slow or stop the spread of infection. 6. We understand that it is sometimes difficult for working parents to make arrangements for their sick children, however, the JCC program is for WELL CHILDREN only. Your child needs to be able to participate in the daily activities large motor play, outdoor play, center activities, etc. We are not set up to care for sick children. It is the responsibility of the parents or guardians to have advance alternative plans to provide for their sick children. 7. Children sent home with a fever will not be allowed back into the program for at least 24 hours after being discharged, unless you provide the JCC and Camp Director with a Doctor s note. Children must be fever free (under 100 degrees), without fever reducing medication, for 24 hours before returning to school. A note will be made of the dismissal time. 8. In accordance with our policy, children with head lice or nits, will be permitted to return to the program when they are completely lice and nit free in the program. Nits require manual removal after treatment. 13

14 INSURANCE The East Valley JCC has the following insurance coverage: General liability coverage of $1,000,000 per occurrence with a $2,000,000 aggregate limit. Our combined single limit for vehicle coverage is $1,000,000 per accident. This includes the bus that we hire during our summer program. In addition, we have an umbrella policy with a $5,000,000 single limit and aggregate limit. We do NOT have medical coverage for program participants and we require families to certify on the registration form that they have medical coverage. In the event that a child is injured our insurance would only pay if it is determined that we were at fault. The insurance company would request information from us and from the family and would make their determination. The process is not under our control. For this reason, we request families have their own medical coverage. STATEMENT OF INCLUSION The East Valley Jewish Community Center does not discriminate against persons with disabilities on the basis of disability. Children and parents with disabilities are provided with an equal opportunity to participate in our program unless their presence would pose a direct threat to the health and safety of others or require a fundamental alteration of the program. This includes, but is not limited to, needing a 1 on 1 para-professional. Our Center will make reasonable modifications in order to integrate children, parents, and guardians with disabilities into our program. The Center will make an individual assessment about whether it can meet the particular needs of the child without fundamentally altering the program. The Center will meet with parents, guardians, and professionals to determine the particular needs of a given child and evaluate how much assistance and/or special help will be necessary. An IEP will be required for this evaluation. The Center will take reasonable steps to integrate a child with disabilities into every activity provided to others.
