3 Introduction Welcome to Stradbroke at Treetops, this booklet is a guide for both new and old campers at Stradbroke and in particular the Lerderderg Region Stradbroke at Treetops. Over the Camp you will be visited a number of times by a team of advisors. The main elements the adviser must consider when judging a camp are Health & Hygiene, Efficiency, Activity and Campcraft. All the advisers aim to assist the Patrols and Leaders by judging the standards and suggesting methods and ideas that will result in higher camping standards. It should be the aim of the Patrols and Leaders to listen, and try to take the advice of the advisors. If you have any questions or problems please do not hesitate to ask the Advisor, Treetops Scout Camp and Pack Holiday Centre is owned by Lerderderg Region and is located on approx 20 hectares of land 4 Km from Riddells Ck (Melways 1995, 509 H11), just 45 mins. from the centre of Melbourne. It is comprised of a Pack Holiday Centre (48 people), Scout Camping area (currently 42 Troop sites) with associated Toilet / Shower facilities and activity areas for Confidence course, Commando Course, Flying Fox, Water Slide, Archery, BMX Bikes and many more. Treetops also has a resident Warden, who is always ready to assist you with any problems or 3

4 sell you some Treetops Badges. During Stradbroke there will be a canteen each night at HQ from 7.00pm to 8.00pm. Milk, Bread and Ice and other comodities can be ordered from HQ. A daily Newsletter will also be published and distributed containing program changes news items from around the camp, weather, sports results and jokes. Riddells Creek is a small country township 15 Km North of Sunbury, it has a small shopping centre which has the following facilities: Small Supermarket Restaurant Newsagent / Post Office Bakery Takeaway Food Shops Video Shop Hair Dresser Hotel Medical CentreService Stations(limited hours) Pharmacy Uniting & Anglican Church facilities are available in Riddells Creek, other denominations are available in Sunbury. 4

5 Camp Rules Access roads around the Campsite are One way only please follow the arrows, speed limits (walking speed) and directions must be adhered to at all times. Vehicles must remain on roads and access tracks at all times and must be returned to the top Car Park after unloading. All cars must be off site by 10.00am Friday. Only the activity & works and service patrol car will be allowed to drive around the site during the camp. 5

6 Pets are not permitted on site The area around the Wardens House, the Works & Services area and the caravan camping area are out of bounds. Trench's are not to be dug without permission of Warden or Camp chief. Fires are only permitted in drums provided and on Stradbroke, wood can be found around the campsite in wood piles ( Normal fire precautions and bans must be adhered to). Note: If Fire Restrictions are currently in force at Treetops please check beforehand to see if open fires or camp fires of any description are Permited, If in doubt please ask the advisors or Camp staff. Scouts are not permitted in other Troops sites or to walk or run through other Sites without permission and should not leave the site without permission. Pre-Camp Log The pre-camp log is to make formal your preparation prior to the camp. It should include: a. Personnel list attending the camp. (plus total No. in the Troop) b. Troop/Patrol Program & Duty roster c. Menu/Ration and Equipment Lists The Log must be compiled by the Patrol 6

7 handed to the advisors on Friday. A separate log is required for each Patrol. A copy needs to remain at camp. Equipment Stradbroke is not an equipment competition, if you have enough equipment to go away camping as a Troop or Patrol, then you have enough equipment to have your camp assessed. It is what the Patrol does with the equipment at its disposal that counts. Keep in mind that the ability to cook, to keep to a program, to keep a site neat and clean, etc. doesn't cost money. Hygiene Most of the modern conveniences we have in our homes are not available on a Scout camp, but this is no excuse to neglect hygiene. Here are some guide-lines: Personal hygienea. Wash / Shower in the morning. b. Cooks should wear aprons and wash their hands before the preparation of food and cooking. c. Cooks then attend to cooking only, the carrying of water etc. should be someone else's job. d. Everyone should wash their face and hands before eating. e. All scouts should have tidy hair. 7

8 f. Clean your teeth after each meal. (Leaders are expected to set an example by being well groomed) Camp hygienea. The site should be tidy and free of food scraps. b. Food such as Meats, milk etc. must be kept is a Esky with ice. c. Esky's must be kept clean and free of slush etc. d. Food should be stored correctly. e. Tables etc. should be cleaned before each meal. f. Rubbish must be disposed of correctly. First Aid First Aid is very much a part of good Hygiene Cuts and Scratches are holes in the skin and may become infected. Any injury or illness should be reported to your Leader and treated. First Aid Kits should be handy and available to all, not hidden in the P.L's pack or locked in a car or box,any serious injury should be reported to HQ and there will be a qualified First Aider onsite. Layout Of The Site Most sites have features that can make setting up a perfect camp site difficult. When setting up your camp the thing to consider is how to make the best use of the site to avoid any problems. You should: a. Make best use of the site, stand back and have a good look at the site before you unload. b. Place components with respect to drainage, wind and other sites. 8

9 c. Consider relative position of tents, eating shelter, wash basin, waste disposal, food & equipment storage, clothes line etc. d. Site identification, Troop / Patrol name, gateway or entrance etc. The position and layout of the site should be such that it won't interfere with others, e.g. too close to adjoining Patrols / Troops or across pathways or roads Tents The advisors have been asked to forget any preferences for various kinds of tents they may have. They have been asked to imagine themselves pitching the tent that they are checking and ask themselves if they could do a better job with the available equipment. Your Patrol should not be penalised because they happen to have the Troop's oldest tent. Consider these points when putting up your tent: a. The entrance should be away from the weather. b. The tent should not be pitched under a tree or dead branch or even a tree likely to fall. c. Pegs should be in a straight line where ground permits and not creating a hazard. d. General appearance, ropes tidy, etc. e. Airing of Bedding, weather permitting Bedding should be aired daily. f. Towels & Washers should be airing outside weather permitting, or inside the tent in poor weather. Bags or packs are not the place for a damp towel. 9

10 The tent should be clean and tidy with each occupant of the tent having clear access to his / her gear which should be stored off the ground. If weather permits, the tent should be brailed and the ground sheet rotated as much as possible. Trenches To prevent damage to the campsite Trenches are NOT to be dug. Fires - Wood/ Open Fires are Not Permitted Due to Fire Restrictions (This includes heat beads) Check with HQ if fires are permitted. The boundary should be defined and clearly visible (roped off) to avoid accidents. Fire safety is the main consideration and fire regulations must be adhered to. All Gas fires and Fridges must adhere to the regulations. The area within 3 meters of the burner should be cleared of burnable material, but NOT raked, and should be clear of overhanging branches or canvas, There must be adequate approved fire fighting equipment provided to cover all areas, e.g. fire buckets or approved extinguisher. 10

11 Bottled Gas As we try to preserve our natural resources the use of Gas Cooking should be encouraged. At Jamborees the only method of cooking allowed is Gas. When using bottled gas remember that it is under high pressure and can be dangerous. Gas bottles must be pressure tested regularly and date stamped, Gas bottles must be in good condition, hoses and fittings checked for damage, kept tight and not leaking. Gas equipment must adhere to the same fire regulations as wood fires, ie 3 meter clearance all round, not under canvas (eating shelter / Kitchen) and Gas Appliances are not permitted on days of Total Fire Ban. Kitchen Hygiene There should be adequate provision for washing up provided Store utensils upside down and off the ground so they stay clean, after washing up and prior to inspections check the inside of billies and frypans. Mop, dish cloth and tea towels should be dried and aired. Waste Disposal 11

12 Current thinking calls for two units in the waste disposal area - the Wet Pit and a Bag or Container for dry waste. No holes and trenches to be dug. The Wet Pit is used to remove food or fat from water. The design of the wet pit should be such that food scraps are caught in a thick filter above the water and removed at regular intervals. The filter should also be removed at regular intervals and cleaned or disposed of. Access to and from the wet pit must be free of hazards to prevent accidents and the wet pit should be fenced off for safety. A rubbish bin for waste and a bin for recycle materials are required, these containers must have a lid or cover and be emptied at regular intervals, use proper rubbish bin liners in the bins,. At Stradbroke at Treetops there will be regular rubbish pick ups from around the site. Please make sure all rubbish bags are tied up and there is no loose rubbish Eating Shelter The eating shelter is another important part of your camp and listed below are a number of points to remember: a. The table should be large enough to be able to seat your whole Patrol plus visitors. 12

13 b. The table should be level and firm with adequate and safe seats (allowed to level ground, within reason). c. The cover or shelter should be high enough to allow all members of the Patrol to stand with comfort and remember that touching the underside will draw the water through wet canvas. d. There should be adequate and correct storage for food and eating utensils. e. Table Clean - If a table cloth is used both table and cloth should be clean. It is desirable to use a plastic cloth but don't cut food on it, if windy it's a good idea to pin the cloth down or at least weigh it down with appropriate equipment. f. Area Clean - The simplest way to clean an area is not to dirty it. Any food scraps lying around will attract flies, ants and even possums at night. g. Food Storage - The storage should be clean and tidy, readily accessible, and able to withstand insects and the weather. Perishables should be kept cold. * Food should NOT be stored where people sleep. Meals At Stradbroke the Menu will be checked for content and quantity and the Patrol will be continually monitored. Remember that we are eating in a camp and not in the controlled conditions at home. a. Personal washing facilities should be available, with disinfectant. b. The preparation should be good and hygienic. 13

14 c. All scouts should have clean face and hands and tidy hair. d. Table manners should be reasonable. e. The complete menu should be served in correct sequence and cooked to a reasonable standard. f. The food should be served correctly with only the cooks. Gadgets Gadgets are those extra bits and pieces that are constructed to make life easier and more acceptable e.g. a wash basin may be used on the ground but it is easier and more comfortable to use it on a stand at the right height. The advisors look for the following things when checking the camp gadgets. a. The quality of manufacture. b. Is it labour saving. c. The use of bush material (Lashing poles etc. brought from home) d. The gadgets must be made during the current camp. e. Things such as the wet pit are a necessity and don't come under the heading of a gadget, neither does a gate way or flag pole. H.Q. & Q.M Store This area is more Patrol Leaders but its up to the scouts to make sure that these notes are observed 14

15 for the sake of the camp itself. Leaders most NOT sleep in the Q.M. store. There should be provision for keeping perishable food such as milk, meat and butter cool and Esky's should be kept clean and free of ice slush. Detergent, soaps etc. must NOT be stored near the food. Goods not in cans or bottles should be well, protected from dust and flies and should be on tables or racks. Air should be able to circulate around all food. Scouts handing out food should have a wash basin, soap, water, and towel within easy reach of the store. Troop gear and spare equipment should be stored away from food in the store off the ground. The Menu and food quantities list should be displayed on a notice board with information from the Log Book. The area set aside for food preparation should be thoroughly clean.
