By Cassie Jones For The Williamson Herald It s that time of year when busy moms are met with the task of planning what to do with the kids all summer. For most of us, summer presents a welcomed, slower pace. It is a time where we enjoy staying up later and having less to check off our daily to-do lists. But for working and non-working moms alike, summer-time also means filling your kid s time with activities to exercise their minds and bodies. Along with the slower pace, we are faced with the added pressure of providing our kids with fun things to do during the summer months. Often the goal is keeping them active, and sparking their creativity by allowing them to try new things while they have the time off from the busy school year. Selfishly, we all have another goal in mind. Let s face it; we all know it takes a little planning to avoid the two words moms most often dread during a long summer day - I m bored. Luckily, there are a variety of available camps in our area from which to choose. We have camps ranging from the traditional week long or overnight summer camps filled with kayaking, rock climbing, archery, water play and crafts. Or the more specialized camp that focuses on sports, art, building, drama or horseback riding. The Williamson Herald s 2014 Summer Camp Guide provides a great resource for busy moms, like you and me, who are trying to plan a fun-filled summer for kids of all ages. Our camps are also places where kids become a community as they engage in physical, social and educational activities that teach how to be more independent and how to contribute to a group. Many camps are available in four different categories. OUTDOOR DAY CAMPS allow campers to unplug and reconnect with the natural world. No matter your child s sport, there s likely a SPORTS DAY CAMP that will get them in the game while having fun and learning important values such as teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play. Located 10 miles from downtown Franklin and Spring Hill, Deer Run Camps have new facilities, a lake, creek, and numerous outdoor recreation options on over 100 wooded acres. Our camps are known for mature college-age counselors who create an exciting, memorable, and often life-changing, experience for campers of all ages. 6 S U M M E R C A M P G U I D E A Williamson Herald Supplement FEBRUARY 20, JAM advanced Music camp The JAM Advanced Music Camp has become the most sought after summer music camp in the Nashville area for aspiring and serious young musicians and vocalists, ages Best known for the JAM tagline: All music, all day; all bands, all day, the JAM is exactly that, and much more. Students who attend the JAM are completely immersed in music - genre, theory, history, charting, composition, performance and collaboration - by playing in two bands each day. Over 30 music genres are offered for each band; students select their preference and are placed in bands based on their skill level and musical taste. The JAM is for the young musician who wants to not only advance their music skills, but also to connect and network with other highly skilled teenage players and vocalists in the area. Many students that meet and form bands at The JAM continue to play together long after the JAM ends in July. JAM students are members of two different bands for the week, collaborating with other students and under the guidance of industry professionals and professors with professional experience. The highlights of the week are the two showcases that the students perform at the end of the week. New in 2014, the JAM Advanced Music Camp will be held on the Ensworth High School campus at 7401 Highway 100 in Nashville. The showcases will take place in the state-of-the art 600 seat theater. Barefoot Republic is a summer youth camp and year-round retreat center. Our mission is to facilitate Christ-centered relationships between people from diverse racial, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds through an equally diverse platform of artistic, athletic and team-building programs. We offer seven week-long overnight sessions for rising 3rd-12th graders at our property near Scottsville, KY, and we offer three sessions of day camp for rising 1st-6th graders in Nashville, Brentwood and Franklin. We work with dozens of partner organizations around middle Tennessee to bring diversity to our camp. Because we are committed to economic diversity, we award financial assistance to at least half of our campers through full and partial scholarships. Every aspect of camp is designed around building relationships, from cabin assignments and exciting activities to worship and evening programs. Barefoot campers have the opportunity to be in community with kids from various backgrounds, and as they build these cross-cultural relationships, they begin to find common ground with others who may appear to be very different. At Peachtree Farms, students learn correct skills, basic horsemanship and life skills. Our camps are designed to improve all aspect of horsemanship for riders of all ages and riding abilities. Peachtree Farms is able to offer year around programs and camps in our indoor riding facility which is a great place to be on the cold wintery days.
