3 For the record books, 2000 will be recorded as a year of moderate growth for the U.S. lodging industry. Not a mean accomplishment, given the subdued expectations at the beginning of the year... The main driver was the continued health of the national economy that generated an estimated 4.7 percent increase in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the year. This strong economic growth triggered a 5.5 percent increase in the demand for accommodations in the cities in which we survey, more than enough to cover the 3.4 percent increase in supply for the year.
