2 QUEENSTOWN WINCH CHALLENGE We had a very successful winch challenge in Queenstown on the 1st of September, lucky for everyone concerned we had fine weather. A big thanks to Hamish Ryan from Mossburn for the use of the Royal burn farm on the Crown Terrace, thanks to Craig the farm manager for being so obliging. What is really good also is we managed to get two Queenstown entries for our event, Keri Iva in his V8 Lexus Toyota, and Leroy Stevenson in his Chevy V8 powered Nissan. Thanks to all the volunteers, Queenstown Car Club for marshalling, our own club for their efforts in marshalling and to those that helped with food and site clean-up. Feedback is very positive, we have everything here in Queenstown to be the top competition venue. Very shortly we will be having a meeting with the event organizers from the North Island circuit, to see what can be done about streamlining the rules between SI, NI to make competition between the two islands a real possibility. It would be great at the end of the season to have a final winner of the two Islands, with a true NZ ONE Trophy for the cabinet. A big thanks to all. Cheers, Bert Chandler

4 This is a story about the bond formed between a little girl and a group of building workers. It's allegedly true and might help to confirm your belief in the goodness of people and that there is hope for the human race... A young family moved into a house next door to an empty plot. One day, a gang of building workers turned up to start building on the plot. The young family's 5-year-old daughter naturally took an interest in all the activity going on next door and started talking with the workers. She hung around and eventually the builders, all with hearts of gold, more or less adopted the little girl as a sort of project mascot. They chatted with her, let her sit with them while they had tea and lunch breaks, and gave her little jobs to do here and there to make her feel important. They even gave the child her very own hard hat and gloves, which thrilled her immensely. At the end of the first week, the smiling builders presented her with a pay envelope - containing 2 Dollars in 10 cent coins. The little girl took her 'pay' home to her mother who suggested that they take the money to the bank the next day to open a savings account. At the bank, the female cashier was tickled pink listening to the little girl telling her about her 'work' on the building site and the fact she had a 'pay packet'. 'You must have worked very hard to earn all this', said the cashier. The little girl proudly replied, 'Yes, I worked every day with Steve and Wayne and Jimmy the Hoon. We're building a big house.' 'My goodness gracious,' said the cashier, 'And will you be working on the house again next week?' The child thought for a moment. Then she said seriously, 'I think so. Provided those wankers at Carters deliver the fucken bricks on time.'

5 A guy is driving around the back woods of Montana and he sees a sign in front of a broken down shantystyle house: Talking Dog For Sale 'He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard. The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there. 'You talk?' he asks. 'Yep,' the Lab replies. After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says 'So, what's your story?' The Lab looks up and says, 'Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so... I told the CIA. 'In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. 'I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running... 'But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger, so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. 'I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals. 'I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired.' The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. 'Ten dollars,' the guy says. 'Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?' 'Because he's a liar! He's never been out of the yard.'

YOU are responsible for the vehicle BEHIND you.. >> Unless specifically instructed by the Trip Leader, you must be vigilant to make sure that you always wait for the vehicle behind. This is both on and off road. >> At all times you MUST wait at all intersections, and always ensure that the driver behind you receives any assistance required through obstacles. >> Don't worry about catching up to the truck in front; if everyone follows the rule of looking out for the one immediately behind, this system works. If you find any of the trips listed above interesting, you MUST REGISTER Simply phone the Trip Leader providing your name and contact details. The Trip Leader can answer any questions you may have about trip grade or any special gear required etc. Registering your interest in a trip does not obligate you to go. You are entitled to pull out before departure.

7 Trip Grades and Checklist for Trip Leaders Trip Grades Grade 1 Standard unmodified trucks, no recovery gear. Grade 2 Standard trucks with mud tyres on, some recovery gear. Grade 3 Standard trucks with mud tyres, snorkel and recovery gear. Grade 4 Modified trucks with extreme mud tyres or mud tyres typically fitted, snorkel a must and a winch, ALL recovery gear. Grade 5 Modified trucks as above, ALL recovery gear and WINCH, DAMAGE Likely REMEMBER - DON T RELY ON OTHERS FOR RECOVERY, IF YOU USE OTHER PEOPLES RECOVERY GEAR AND BREAK IT, YOU REPLACE IT. Check List for Trip Leaders Torch Snatch Strap 8000Kg Snorkel Tow hooks front and rear rated to 10000lb Vehicles with winches - Snatch Block, Tree Trunk Protector, 2 Winch Blankets Bow Shackle 4.7T recommended T minimum Shovel or spade Fire extinguisher Spare wheel Toilet paper TRIP LEADER OPTION Extra warm clothing, Ground anchor, Chains, Food, Overnight gear, Chains, Basic tool kit First Aid kit, Jack and base, Water bottle, Gloves. In Case of an Accident Trip leader to take control or appoint someone to do so. Ensure safety of yourself, others and property. Administer First Aid, and assess injuries. Get help underway if required. Phone 111, EPIRB, Radio Channel 12. Send someone for help. Know your location - GPS, local knowledge, maps, road signs. As soon as possible advise a member of the Club executive DO NOT Speak to Media. Advise Media to call Club President.

8 1.Members may not organize Club runs without first obtaining permission. Where permission is required to access property, an executive member of the Club must, before a trip commences be contacted and notified that permission has been received from the property owner or controller. At all times the Club Captain shall appoint one member present at any Club activity as Trip Leader who will be in full charge of the party. All members must comply with the Trip Leader s instructions and requests 2.NO Firearms or Dogs to be carried on Club trips. 3.NO alcohol to be consumed during Club activities. The Committee may vary this rule for specific occasions. 4.Dangerous driving or stupidity on a trip is not permitted and any member indulging in this sort of activity will be severely reprimanded. 5.When on a Club run, whether on the road or trail, each driver will keep the following vehicle visible in his rear vision as much as practicable. If you lose sight of the following vehicle, ease up and wait for it. If after a reasonable time it still fails to catch up go back and look for it. It could have broken down, gone off the track or be requiring other assistance. 6.When closed gates are encountered the trip leader stops at the gate, and the second vehicle will pull to one side and open the gate and then wait for the convoy to pass through. The second vehicle will then close the gate and rejoin the convoy ahead of the Tail End Charlie. This ensures that no one person is continually left to open and close gates. The Trip Leader may amend this rule to suit the prevailing conditions. 7.On all Club runs the Club First Aid kit/rescue kit MUST be carried by the Trip Leader. If any equipment from it is used, persons responsible must be informed so that items can be replaced. 8.Courtesy is to be shown to other track users, eg trampers, trail bike riders, Horse riders etc. And care showed for the conservation of natural growth and environment as much as possible. All vehicles are to be maintained in a safe and road worthy condition. All rubbish must be brought home again for disposal and not thrown away. All vehicles to be fitted with tow hook or hooks approved by the Committee and to be in an accessible place on the front and on the rear of the vehicle. Trip Leader to check this. All visitors on Club trips are expected to abide by the Club rules. All visitors on Club trips are to be charged $10 per vehicle, which grants them temporary Club membership, and covers the Club for Insurance purposes. This will be deducted as part payment for membership, should the visitor decide to join the Club. Trip Leader to collect the money. Any member who brings visitors are responsible for them. Four-wheel drive vehicles only to be permitted on Club runs unless permission obtained from the Committee. Club stickers must be removed from vehicles when sold. All vehicles must carry a firstaid kit, a fire extinguisher, recovery strop, D/bow shackles, shovel or spade, basic tool kit, torch, toilet paper, spare wheel, jack and base. The Club shall not be responsible for members or visitors private property. Junior members must be accompanied by an adult acceptable to the Committee. The Club members or other persons involved in Club activities shall not be liable for any injuries or damage incurred.

9 RECOMMENDATIONS A. It is strongly recommended that all vehicles carry: 1 Ltr Oil, Axe, Spare Fuel, 500 mls Brake Fluid, 2 Ltr Water, Tyre Pump B.As much mud as possible to be washed off the vehicle as soon as possible after trips as a precaution for spreading disease and pollution. C. Motorcycles and similar vehicles to remain at the rear of the convoy for their own protection. D.Due to the problem of unknown persons using the Club name, it is suggested that the registration of all unknown vehicles seen on tracks where the Club also goes should be recorded E.On a trip where we have to return out the same track turn around in time so as to be clear of the track before dark. F. Seatbelts should be worn on Club trips. G. It is strongly recommended that suitable mud flaps be fitted to the rear of all vehicles.
