My new bride I lived off post in rented house. One dy while driving in Bltime, we spped t mobile home sles lot. We fell in love with new 35-foot Crestliner. In der buy this new home on wheels, we would sell our beutiful Mercury coupe, which I hd bought new in July The Belir Au Auction ws only 12 miles up the rod so I ok my royl bronze mroon Mercury with whitewll tires, fender skirts sun vis the uction. The bidding went well, my bby sold the Yk, Penn., Lincoln-Mercury deler. As I counted my money, I sw my Mercury pull out on the highwy hed nth Yk. This mde me sd, so I counted my money gin tht put smile on my fce. I hd plnned hitchhike home, but s I wlked down the street, I spotted woody wgon f sle. It ws gret-looking 1940 Fd Deluxe with ner-perfect wood body. Now remember, this is 1952, so 1940 woody is not n ntique even collectible cr just n old used cr. The owner wnted $250, but he cme down little becuse it hd very tired engine. Everything else on it ws in gret shpe. We closed the del, I drove home leving cloud of blue smoke behind. The following weekend, we bought the Crestliner mobile home. It ws delivered Buers Triler Court, which ws just 2 miles outside the Army post. After it ws hooked up wter electric, we were redy move in our new home with our meger belongings wedding presents of pots pns, rdio, silverwre, bedding used Zenith TV (big box, smll round screen). We lredy hd friends living in the prk, mrried GIs like ourselves. Now it ws time del with my new problem: tired V-8 engine. My good friend Sgt. Don Connell suggested we go junk yrd up on Route 40, where he hd spotted lot of old Fds. The mn t the junk yrd sid he hd just the engine f me: This is relly good V-8 I herd it run befe we ok it out of the cr. Being young trusting, I bought it chep. My next problem ws how where chnge out the woody s engine. The wether ws mild no rin in sight, so I figured I d do it outside. Sgt. Don cme my rescue gin. He hd big chin, we found two stright trees bout 4 feet prt in the bck of the prk. Don ws firemn in Ohio befe he joined Uncle Sm, so he hd no trouble climbing those trees with tht chin over his shoulder. We browed chin fll from the post s mot pool hung it on the chin. Out cme tht tired old V-8 in went the good used engine complete with its own crburet, distribut, fuel pump, fn genert. We dded little gs the crb fired it up. It rn smooth quiet. Well, the mn sid it ws good engine, didn t he? The old Fd rn so smoothly I decided I could hul our 35-foot rolling mnsion bck Michign when I got dischrged in November Most of our friends ld me I ws crzy even consider it, but I ve herd tht befe. I spped by welding shop ld the guy I plnned pull 35-foot triler. He sid, Pull tht spre tire off the tilgte, we ll weld the hitch close the bumper. He did nice job. Another friend in the triler prk gve me pir of coil springs from 1935 Olds, with threded U-bolts welded them bolt on the rer xle. They fit. The guy we bought the mobile home from gve me good del on 6-volt electric brke-control set, which I instlled in the wgon. We were redy roll. Some of the guys were tking bets on how fr we would get befe our wgon broke down. I sid, Look on the bright side. We ve got our house with us. If the wgon quits, tht s where we ll live this winter. We stuffed the pillows in the kitchen cbinets, set the TV on the flo ltched the Cont. pge 8

Gege wked f Tucker s Ypsilnti Tool Co. s n engineer until his deth in 1943, lthough he probbly never got wk on the Tucker Aumobile, I m sure tht even during the wr yers Presn Tucker ws dreming tlking bout tht future vehicle. Since I ws bn three yers fter Gege died I never got meet him, with my interest in crs, I m sure he would hd some gret sties tell. There were me empty spces wide vriety of prts t this meet most everyone should this yer severl vends felt the crowd ws down be ble find something they cn t live without. I lso. Our group sold well, overll I would consider been ttending this meet s long s I been going my 48th visit Hershey success. 8 Enjoy the Summer Dys 1940 Fd Deluxe Sttion Wgon windows. We wved good-bye our friends heded nth the Pennsylvni Turnpike. Befe we got on the ll rod, I spped check things out. When I opened the do the triler, wter rn out on the steps. Oops we d fgotten flush the ilet, the wter hd been splshing every time I hit the brkes. We mopped up the flo, then heded west on the turnpike. When you drive the turnpike in cr, the rod seems quite flt. But when you re pulling hevy lod, you quickly relize it s grdul incline sometimes 8 10 miles long. Tht overwked V-8 would slowly lose speed going up the hills. At some point, it strted snow, vcuum windshield wipers don t wk when you re climbing hill with lod. I found myself moving closer closer the windshield trying see through the snow, not wnting tke my foot off the gs pedl f fer of losing precious speed. I finlly hd tke my foot off f split second so the wipers could swipe once cross the windshield. Doing tht t intervls llowed us keep going, but it ws very stressful. It ws getting wse now I hd downshift second ger get over the hills. When I finlly spotted Howrd Johnson Mot Inn, I decided prk there f the night. It ws cold in the triler, but we hd lots of blnkets. Besides, we were newlyweds! The next dy, we continued our wy west. The snow hd spped, but there were still lots of hills. I remember pping one hill in first ger t less thn 10 mph. Ohio rods re fltter thn Pennsylvni rods, but remember, this ws 1953 the Ohio Turnpike hd not yet been built. Truck trffic ws relly hevy you hd go through every little wn. When we got Wdswth, Ohio, trffic ws bcked up f 5 miles becuse of gping holes in the pvement in the center of wn. A trucker ld me the stte hd dered the city repir its rod, but it refused becuse it wnted the stte get bypss completed. Politics. We mde it through the broken highwy, but just bout everything in the triler got dumped on the flo including milk from the refrigert. Wht mess we hd clen up. When we spped in Fremont, Ohio, f dinner, I ld my wife I couldn t drive nother mile. She rgued, But it s still erly we re so close home! I offered compromise: There s theter cross the highwy, so I ll tke you the movies, OK? We wtched Mrtin Luther lerned how the Luthern religion cme be. The next mning, we begn the home stretch. We rrived t our prerrnged spot t the Melvindle (Mich.) Triler Prk befe nightfll. As I ws bcking the triler in our lot, I popped reverse-ger oth off. Oh, well, we d mde it. Erly in 1954, I ld my wife, They don t mke wood wgons nyme, so we d better get rid of this one while we cn still get couple hundred dollrs f it. We sold the cr with reverse ger still clicking, bought 5-yer-old Buick Rodmster. Tht, however, is nother sty. A Brief Histy of the Fd LoGo After the Detroit Aumobile Compny The Henry Fd Compny, the Fd Mot Compny begn in There were close 125 Aumobile Compnies bsed within the city limits of Detroit lone. Ptent Office. This second Fd logo lso known s the Script with Wings ws pplied new cr rdit grills. The next yer in the U.K., the first Fd in n Ovl ws used in Aumobile Advertising. Yers lter, this new Fd Ovl ppered s Delership signge in Engl. This logo ws soon dopted by Fd U.S. in both blck blue versions. In 1912, the third genertion FoMoCo logo ws introduced. It ws Tringle with Wings with the writing The Universl Cr t the botm. It cme out in Ornge Blue cols. Henry Fd hit the dislike butn this version ws dropped quickly. The Fd Blue Ovl ws gin chnged in 1927 with the Fd lettering ws ltered closely resemble Henry Fd s ctul signture. This Blue Ovl nmeplte mde its debut on the rdit grill on new model crs. The Ovl lsted until 1949 where the Fd Crest dned the front of new models. Numerous different style emblems like the stmpeding Mustng were utilized until the Fd Blue Ovl returned the front of new Fds in the mid 1970 s. It hs been there ever since. There ws n ttempt redesign the logo in 1966 using Pul R concept but it ws rejected. In 2008, fke April Fools Dy press relese nnouncing modern looking logo ws picked up by mny medi outlets. Trnsmissions wk in conjunction with the engine provide power the drive wheels, while keeping the engine s output optimlly mtched speed lod conditions. Chnging trnsmission fluid serves multitude of purposes. Trnsmission fluid clens, cools, trnsmits fce, inhibits vrnish, lubrictes, trnsmits pressure continully protects the trnsmission. Fluid does wer out, chnging trnsmission fluid is much like chnging mot oil prevent brekdown of trnsmission. If possible, s some trns filters re virtully impossible chnge without pulling the engine out becuse of clever engineering, chnging the filter while chnging the fluid is lwys good ide. Mny do it self people, even some professionl mechnics, use the chepest filter gsket they cn get their hs on thinking they re ll the sme. They re not the sme, if you compre genuine Fd gsket n off the shelf gsket you will notice the Fd gsket hs grommets round every hole so you cn not over tighten the pn the trnsmission. When you over tighten chep pn gsket the pn it will mny times bend the pn t the holes, then eventully leks strt between those holes becuse there is no longer tension on tht prt of the pn gsket. We ll know there is difference in filters, s chep is not good good is not chep so, be nice trnsmission, it does lot of wk f you. Becuse of chnging cms, heds, exhusts, crbs injects, becuse the power b is usully shifted be higher, mny replce the sck tque converter with higher stll converter. This is ll well good, but precutions need be tken prevent trns filure. First of ll let me explin tht there is truly only one wy check converter stll speed, tht is get the cr moving in high ger round mph, then flo it in high ger. Whtever the tchometer flshes is true stll speed. You do not get true stll speed redings by sting on the gs while locking up the brkes, doing this in lower gers often cuses flse redings becuse the cr ccelertes o fst get n ccurte observtion. A cool trnsmission is better becuse it will live longer, if you do chnge the converter higher stll speed, you must put good, / bigger, cooler on the unit. Most sck coolers run through the rdit keep the fluid t constnt temperture vi the coolnt thermostt, but if you find the trns temperture is o high, you could bypss the rdit run the lines directly from the externl cooler the trns bck gin. Generlly speking, trnsmission will give you mny yers of good service it you keep it s temperture under 200*F, but when you begin getting round 220*F you will be shtening the life expectncy of trnsmission, much less getting in tempertures over 250*F tht will ssure filure in very sht time. There usully is no reson run me expensive full synthetic fluid unless you very high stll converter in cr, like dedicted rce cr, becuse synthetic fluid hs much higher resistnce vrnishing up under high het conditions. If you re one of the rre people tht rebuilds own trnsmissions, remember tht you do not wnt smooth out cmph the edges of those shift vlves becuse they re designed be shrp continully cut through vrnish s it tries build up.
