2 FROM THE (INTERIM) EDITOR AUSTIN HEALEY CLUB OF SAN DIEGO 11/7/07, 11:45pm Hey there, Now this is what I call late! I ve really had a hard time making myself get started this month, but it s finally time to bite the bullet and get it done. I only hope it reaches everybody before the Election Meeting next Wednesday. Fortunately, I only have two more issues to prepare before the new Editor takes over for the February 2008 issue! A little advance warning: The December issue will be a little late, too, but hopefully not quite this late. I probably won t be able to start work on it until the first weekend in December, but I expect it will be a very brief issue anyway, so I should be able to crank it out by Monday the 3 rd. Please be sure to send your What s New? items to Coyote, and any pictures and articles to me, by the 20 th or shortly after. Don t wait for me to beg, cuz I ain t gonna do it. 3 FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT November 7, 2007 Hi All, Terry s been really swamped for the last few weeks, and asked me to fill-in for him here. I figured I had a few things I could write about, with the recent wildfires and our upcoming Renewals, Election and Christmas Party, so I agreed. We both want to express our condolences to Bob & Sue Farnsworth for the loss of their home (and Healeys). We all had a great time whenever the Club gathered there, but our loss is negligible compared to theirs. As far as I know, none of our other members suffered any similar loss from the fires I ve heard from or about 42 of our other 100+ members. Many of them reported that they had to evacuate but were able to return to intact homes. Most of the ones I haven t heard from live in areas that were not seriously threatened, but about 16 of them live in areas that were at least close to one of the fire perimeters. It d be great to hear from them, too. Wearing VP Hat #1 (Membership Coordinator): As of today, our Club s membership stands at 106. I ll be sending out Renewal Notices for 2008 very soon. The members at last month s meeting voted to do that via when possible. For those of you we don t have an for, you ll get your renewal notice in the mail. For those who ve just joined or already paid for 2008, you won t get one at all. Switching to VP Hat #2 (Election Committee Chairman): We ll be electing our 2008 Club Officers at this month s meeting on the 14 th at Hsu s. We have solid nominees (i.e., volunteers) for five out of the six elected positions, and at least a tentative one or two for Activities Chairman. It won t be much of an election with only one nominee per office. Even though that s been the norm for the last few years, I think it d be great if some more of you decided to get involved in keeping your Club going. Be sure to RSVP to Susan by December 1 st for the Christmas Party. We can t guarantee that we ll have enough food and door prizes if we don t know you re coming. Hope to see you there, Rick FROM THE CONCLAVE 2008 CHAIRMAN There are only 8½ more months remaining until Conclave 2008! Currently, we are continuing with our planning meetings on a monthly basis, however as the events draws nearer, we may have to move to a twice a month schedule. Registration & Regalia forms are available online at: We are counting on all of you AHCSD members to volunteer with either the planning of Conclave, running of Conclave, or both. We can t pull this off without your help and I guarantee you ll have a blast doing it! Our next monthly Conclave Planning Meeting will be held on Sunday, November 25 th at 9:00 A.M. Bob & Barbara Humphreys will once again be our hosts. Topics of conversation will include updates on registration/hotel reservations, the various off-site event reservations, tech session planning, solicitation of sponsorship letters, 4-page brochure, event program details, etc. If you are a Committee Chair, please plan on attending. The Humphreys are located in Clairemont at 6351 Charing St., San Diego, (TB 1248-J2) and can be reached at (858) Hope to see you all there, Mike Williams Conclave 2008 Chair Healeymike@earthlink.net or (858) HEALEY HEARSAY 3 NOVEMBER 2007

6 WHAT S NEW? What s new for November 2007 By Rick Snover, sitting in for the Coyote Susan Virden-Kwiat reports: The latest item on Gerry s list of things that go wrong with old 1957 Healeys, 100-6, is that it looks like it has blown a head gasket now. Probably happened somewhere around the time that the freeze plugs blew, or just over time and from it sitting so long since 1985 not being ran. Oh well, Gerry says it is another messy fix-it adventure. Rick Snover reports that his Tri-carb has now been painted and it s going to be absolutely stunning in a rich cream color over deep blue insets matching the interior. It s getting very close to being ready for the some assembly phase to commence. On a sadder note, Steve Kirby reports that although his & Diane s home, garages and cars escaped any significant damage from the wildfires, he did suffer a casualty during his clean-up. Pulling his MG B out to blow off the ashes, he set the handbrake and stepped away to fetch the air hose CRASH as the handbrake failed and the car rolled backwards into the canyon, crunching the rear-end pretty badly. 9 TREASURE HUNT Sift & Sort at the Farnsworths By Rick Snover, photos by Wayne Johnson & Rick Snover On Wednesday, October 31 st, eleven of us joined Bob & Sue Farnsworth, their daughter and grandson to hunt for treasures among the ashes. The other members who arrived to help were: John & Mary Schermerhorn, Steve Kirby, Wayne Johnson, Bob Kitterer, Sandy Leon, Gisela Putzke, Klaus Kind, Roland Wilhelmy and his houseguest. I was astonished at how complete the destruction was The house was basically leveled, with virtually no wood left or anything soft left at all. Many of us focused on the garage area for most of the day, where the three Austin Healey 100s and all of Bob s tools were located. We managed to salvage a lot of the steel tools, including some of Bob s fathers old woodworking handtools. Most were charred, but Steve said they should clean-up okay and suggested a future tech session at his place to wire-wheel them. The cars were a mess, with puddles of melted aluminum from the shrouds on the floor under at least one of them. All in all, it was a very sad day, but at least we were able to do something to try to help. HEALEY HEARSAY 9 NOVEMBER 2007
