From the Seneschal This is my first report as Seneschal and it is much like my Archery reports. We have members and things. I am always proud to say that I am from Heraldshill, all of you make the rest of us look good. Look at all the things we do and do well. Our last event was outstanding and much fun for everyone. A lot of very deserving members received awards at court and I got to be upfront to see it all firsthand. It was fun to see the eyes of everyone that was called upfront. It just isn t the same as being in the crowd. Anyway, thank you to all that helped and contributed to our event. Including all of our friends from other groups and adopted Hillians. A special thank you to our Majesties for attending and adding to the fun. I know we have several things still going on before the end of this year. So I look forward to seeing each of you as we grow and expand our knowledge and capabilities. In Service William 3

National Night Out HL Juliana Macnayre The first Tuesday of August again found Shire members, and one previous Shire member, Vincent, at National Night Out. This year instead of being held at East Park the event was being held out at the fairgrounds. Many of us were not sure how this new location would work out. William and I got there first, and I went looking for the person in charge to find out where our spot was located. Originally, they had planned to put us on the north side of the building in the grassy area, instead we were to be on the east side of the main building. We got the Hill's tables set up and started to put out items, Stasi set up her calligraphy station and other Hillians brought things to put out on the tables as well. It was nice that we were nearly out of table space! Luckily Vincent had brought along tables as well, and he brought his demo kits and set some of them out. In the end, we had a lot of stuff for people to see. Gwyn was weaving on her inkle loom, Stasi was doing calligraphy, Saerlaith was drumming, I had brought the usual Shrewsbury Cakes and sekajabin, and of course we had fighting! Johan, Heinrich, Uhtred and Gobban participated in the fighting portion of the demo and shared their interest with the people watching. Initially, we did not have very many of the public coming to see us, but then we got busy and a whole lot of talking was going on. Time went by quickly. We were keeping an eye on the weather because a storm was coming, and I was told we could start packing early if we wanted. Because of the threatening weather we reluctantly did, and it was a good thing. William and I 4

were packed up, and the people we had been talking too had left when the wind came up and we jumped in our vehicle. The wind was blowing the dust so much that visibility was greatly reduced. So it was a good thing we all packed up when we did. Thanks to everyone who came for helping us out, and a special thanks to Vincent for joining us. 5

St. Augustine s Fair Lady Avelyn Carbery It really does not get any better than a Herald s Hill event. For the past several years my family has attended the August event with my parents, Juliana and William, more as guests than contributing members. Every year has been better than the last, and being more involved this year made it even better. I began Friday night helping with troll, and when troll closed I ran over to do the night shoot for archery. This was the first time I had shot arrows in the dark. The targets were small glow-in-the-dark bracelets (a little too small if you ask me, HL Fletcher) and I thought it was a great way to start the event. Saturday, I started the day on the thrown weapons range by inspecting weapons and helping run the line. I helped a nice newcomer throw axes for the first time, and seeing the smile on his face when he finally stuck one was pretty cool. After that, my daughter, Zina, and I took part in the knife/ax throwing competition. The throw was six knives with a target of fairly small circles (again, HL Fletcher. Surprised? I didn t think so) and six axes at a target of criss-crossed rubber bands with extra points for breaking both at the same time. I was declared the winner; however, the second place finisher raised her disgruntled voice and thought maybe I had thrown one too many axes. It was determined a throw-off would settle it, and a brilliant suggestion came from the crowd to use spears. Again, I was declared the winner. And yet again, a disgruntled voice was heard and it was determined knives were the one true way to settle it. And again.nope, not this time. I lost by more than I care to admit to Zina. And the way she throws, I guarantee it will not be the last time that happens. 6

After a delicious lunch at the inn, I headed over to the archery range for the afternoon. I helped inspect some bows and then took part in Lord Gobban s Assist the Army shoot. Heavily armored zombies were the target. Negative points for the armor made it quite challenging and yet, very enjoyable. After this, I ran a shoot for the first time. My target was a ring of fire with a griffin in the middle, with various negative and positive points depending which part was hit. I kept it short and sweet as it was the last shoot of the day and everyone was really hot and growing tired. This allowed me to finish out the necessary parts of my MIT sheet, so with the next reign I should officially be a Marshal. And then.court. Their majesties Damien and Isabel put on such entertaining courts that I always make it a point to attend. This was no exception, and yet, even better than I ever imagined. I got called up to court a few times. One was to receive a very cool hand-painted arrow from Lord Gobban for helping with the archery (it s awesome, thank you!) and one to become a lady of Calontir. Wow. I was amazed. My children claim I am not much of a lady, but apparently they were wrong. As I am basking in the joy, about to be dismissed, I hear but wait, there s more! I have watched others get awards and thought; I did not think I would cry. I was wrong. Tears came as I was made a Boga Fyrd, something that was not even a blip on my radar. I am so completely honored by this and the fact that I now have both my mother s and father s medallions to wear. But wait, there s more! Lord Gobban was called up and made a Boga Fyrd at the same time! Yes! Congratulations and hugs and back to my seat I went, shell-shocked and overjoyed for both me and my Fyrd twin. But wait, there s more! My daughter, Zina, received not one but two awards also, the Queens Chalice and the Falcon s Claw. It was a pretty good day for us and for others in our shire. Let us just say my tears were nothing compared to the Hill s newest Pelican, but I bet you will read about that somewhere else in this newsletter. The day finished with an amazing feast prepared by said new Pelican. Zina shared her talented voice with us through song, something that I could never do even if I was not tone deaf. And I ended up crying again as William Fletcher gave me a coupon for a longbow of my choice handmade by him, since I could no longer win one in the unranked tournament at Lilies, which had been my unmet goal for the last few years. I am not sure how anything could top this event, but nonetheless, I cannot wait for next year. 7

St. Augustine s Faire Lady Jutte Roose van der Brugghe This year's St. Augustine's Faire was a little different from our usual event in that it was more of a joint effort between Heraldshill and several shires and baronies. Earlier in the year Lord Khalil Abd'l Wahid Al-Katib contacted me in my role as event steward with an idea for a theme for our event. It would seem as if a certain popular Calontiri named Thora was spending a lot of time in Northshield. And to prove her value to Calontir, we would exhibit our prowess in many areas of fighting, food and the arts. This idea proved so popular, that our event drew populace from far and wide along with Their Royal Majesties Damien and Issabell who honored us with Their presence. Much fun was had by all of us trying to prove to Mistress Thora that we should be her favored Kingdom. Court was exciting for the Shire of Heraldshill, with a number of our populace being called before the King and Queen to receive recognition. Lady Avelyn receive her AOA and was made a member of the BogaFyrd. Lady Zina was chosen to receive the Queen's Chalice and was awarded the Falcon Claw. Lord Thor was awarded an AOA. And certainly the most emotional was when a boon was begged to make our own Lady Brigida von München a Pelican. I will end this by giving a big thank-you to my fellow Hillians. Everyone from our little shire works so hard to make our events enjoyable and fun. Also our gratitude to all of those who come from outside of our shire to help us. Your help is very much appreciated. 8

St. Augustine s Faire HL William Fletcher of Carbery This year I was in charge of the thrown weapons area. Most of the day was open throwing, but a tournament was held. At this tournament several people entered, but two were neck and neck and turned out that they tied. It was a young lady and her mother. I made the entrants throw axes and knifes at special targets that would lend themselves to scoring if you were a good thrower. The knife target was a green six inch circle with a yellow three inch center. The axe target were rube bands stretched across the stump making an X in the middle, so you could cut both bands with one ax if you were good. As it turned out Avelyn Carbery (the mother) was very good with the axes and Zina Pevstova (the daughter) was very good with the knifes. So we had a throw off and Zina won the multi-tool with an axe head on it (hope it has not cut any fingers). It also made me feel proud since Avelyn is my daughter and Zina is one of my granddaughters. Both of which received awards for their prowess in court. Thank you to all those that participated and to those that threw throughout the day. 9

Member Review Lord Berndt der Kühne (aka: Doug Kuehne) He s been working on the railroad, all the live long day. He s been working on the railroad, just to pass the time of day wait, wait, wait. What is a railroad and who has been working on it all day long? Oh, never mind, it s just Berndt. This month s member review Lord Berndt der Kühne (mka: Doug Kuehne). Berndt der Kühne comes to us from the far northern fields of Iowa. Born and raised in the Osage area, he still resides there today with his wife, Her Ladyship Brigida von München (mka: Deb Kuehne). Many of the long time Shire members know him quite well, but some of the newer members may not be as familiar with him. While he is one of the founding Shire members, Berndt does not get a chance to participate in many of the Shire s activities, because his job of repairing railroad lines for the Union Pacific often takes him far out west for long periods of time. Although he travels quite a bit now, Berndt is no stranger to spending time away from home. Prior to working for the railroad, just after graduation from high school, Berndt enlisted in the United States Army and served a few years in Germany. It was during this time that he first came into contact with the SCA and re-enacting the Middle Ages. Berndt and Brigida had joined and were a part of the Shire of Vielbergen, in the then-principality of Drachenwald for a good portion of their time in Europe. When it was time to return home, Berndt and Brigida decided to move to Osage so they could be closer to family. After a few years, Brigida missed re-enacting and wanted to get back into the SCA, so they started attending various events. It was during one of these events, in La Grande Tente, that they were introduced to Lady Petra. It was also at this event when they met Lady Kaie of Blakwode for the first time. Together they began discussing the possibility of forming a group, and soon after, they started meeting at NIACC. From here the rest is Shire history. When it comes to his persona, Berndt had chosen to explore the life of a twelfth century 11

man-at-arms. He does have a device and it is registered as a Gules, a fess bretessed Or between a horse rampant and a sledgehammer argent; or in simpler terms, it is a red background with a horse on the top of the shield, a hammer at the bottom separated by a gold stripe shaped like the top of a castle wall. Berndt s persona is also married and has a story behind the marriage. Berndt met and married Brigida while on his way to join the Second Crusade to save Jerusalem. The tale goes that he rescued her father in München (Munich) from thugs intent on robbing him. As a reward for saving his life, Brigida and Berndt were married. Berndt and Brigida do not travel alone. They have two children that were regular attendees to the Shire s activities, but as life goes, both children graduated high school and moved on to have lives of their own. The oldest, Alaina, lives in Coeur d Ennui, and is still an active member and can be seen attending events around the region. Their youngest, Greg (Oddi olfuss), is no longer interested in the SCA. Although his work takes him away from the Shire, Berndt has still managed to have an active role in the group s activities. Early on in the Shire s existence, he was the group Herald and for a time a Marshal of the Field. He was even the Autocrat for the event Thrill on the Hill II in Osage. It was for autocrating this event that Berndt received his Award of Arms. Berndt spent a good portion of early days on the battlefield, and of course, being a fighter, Berndt has assembled his own fighting kit, including armor that he made himself, as well as his weapons and shield. But in more recent time, he has changed stride a bit by picking up a bow and spending time competing on the archery field along side his wife. He also has been known to dabble in brewing. Like others who have spent a long time with the SCA, Berndt has a list of memorable events and happenings in his history. His first Pennsic is one of his more memorable events, but he also remembers a particular event in Northshield. For feast the group had decided to serve samples of food along a buffet line, but it apparently was not as satisfying to the kids, because they ended up stopping by McDonalds afterwards. Of course the most notable event in Berndt s history was Thrill on the Hill I. This is where Heraldshill was official elevated and became the Shire of Heraldshill. Outside the activities of the Shire, when he is not traveling and working for the railroad, Berndt enjoys a bit of pheasant hunting from time to time, and will not turn down a chance to watch some good old NASCAR. He also enjoys a good steak and also has a penchant for lasagna. One little known fact about Berndt is that he also likes to visit wineries and breweries when he gets the chance, and he really enjoys eating at places that are microbreweries, such as Granite City and Court Avenue. And even someone who travels quite a bit for work, Berndt still has a few favorite places to visit, such as Stillwater, Minnesota and the Amanas Colonies in Iowa. But one of his favorite trips was the week trip he took to southern Germany where he saw all of the castles of Mad King Lud 12

wig s, and ate at a restaurant along the Chiem Lake; during World War II, it had been a resort for Nazi officers. As for what the future holds for Berndt in the Shire, he is not certain for the moment. It all depends on what part of the west he ends up working in, and how far from home he ends up traveling. But hey, retirement is only fifteen or twenty years away. Groan. Chornicler 13

Officers Reports From the Archery Marshal We had a good turn out on the archery range for our event this year. A big thank you and well done to the MITs Beatrix and Avlyn who designed and created most of the shoots this year. Also congratulations to Avlyn (and myself) for being elevated to the order of the Boga-fyrd. Yis Lord Gobbán Mac Roibeáird From the Herald Greetings from your Herald! Our Gulf Wars submissions have been registered. They include Anna's device, Anna and Johan's badge, Brigida's badge and Juliana's hedgehog badge. Heinrich's new device has been tweaked to clear conflict and will be resubmitted. Stasi got her device submitted at Lilies. Commentary has closed at Laurel without any signs of trouble and will be decided later this month although it will need a couple of months of proofreading before we find out what happened. The Calontir College of Heralds has created a new resource to help people with heraldry - the Calontir Virtual Consult Table. It's an on-line form that you can fill out to request help with names, armory, lost submissions, etc. It's in "beta testing" at Virtual+Consult+Table, so feel free to help test it. Otherwise, Gida and I will be happy to help. Just us or find us on Facebook. Speaking of Gida, don't forget to come to Deodar's event on November 11th to help get her elevated to the Pelicanate! A few other Shire members were recognized at St. Augustine's Faire. Avelyn got her AoA and Boga Fyrd. Gobban also got Boga Fyrd. Thorir got his AoA. Zina got a Queen's Chalice and a Falcon's Claw (youth archery). At your service, Mistress Sofya la Rus 14

Officers Reports Continued From the Chronicler A little belated, but another newsletter is on the record. Thank you all for your submissions and hard work. I am looking at finishing the next newsletter on the first weekend of the New Year, or the second, so if you could start sending me items now I would appreciate it. That will give me plenty of time to get everything organized. I also heard that The Parade was again nominated for the William Blackfox Award, Best Regular Feature The Member Review, but I have not seen the confirmation on the webpage yet, or heard from the Kingdom Chronicler. However, my sources are very reliable. Thank you Brigida! Once again, the next newsletter will be coming to you in January, so please keep those submissions coming. Thank you all! Yours in Service, Lord Sifrid von Eichelborn From the Web Minister Greetings from the Web Minister! With the recent changes in officers and new members, please double check the Officer and Member Pages to make sure the information is correct. Let me know if you have any ideas for the Shire Website or the Calontiri wikispace. At your service, Mistress Sofya la Rus 15
