1 Summer MMPOA Annual and Special Assessment Meetings Held May 14 Thirty-three members of the Majestic Mountain Property Owners Association (MMPOA) gathered at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 14th, 2016, at the Zion Hill Baptist Church Meeting Hall located at 2552 Boomer Road, Boomer, NC. A Special Road Assessment Meeting was held immediately prior to the Annual Meeting. Thanks to all property owners who brought items for donation to the Zion Hill Baptist Church Food Bank. The church does not charge us for the use of their hall. The Board appreciates those who supported our community and recognized Zion Hill s generosity in offering complimentary use of this facility by donating can goods to their food bank. Majestic Mountain Property Owners gathered for Special and Annual Meetings on May 14. 2 Among the actions taken during the May 14 meetings were the following: Special Road Assessment Approved: During the Special Assessment Meeting, the Board s proposal to request another annual assessment of $100 per lot to be placed in a special road fund used exclusively to upgrade the existing roads was approved. The new assessment will begin in Calendar Year By-Laws Amendment Approved: An Amendment to By-Laws section 4.6 was approved by the membership during the Annual Meeting. The amendment provides for the staggering and lengthening of directors terms in office. Board and Officer Elections: The following were elected to the MMPOA Board at the Annual Meeting. At a teleconference on May 25, 2016, the board elected the officers. President- Jeff Rush Vice President - Bob Wainwright Secretary- Treasurer- Doug Kerman Director- Bill Griswold Director- Bruce Berkowitz Director- Jacque Quick The Board explained the road repaving which was completed in early June. New Hand Rails Installed at Common Area Attractive new hand rails were recently installed along the boardwalk to the waterfall in the MMPOA Common Area to enhance the safety and enjoyment of the area.

The Scenic Route (With excerpts from Winston-Salem Monthly magazine) While it s a no-brainer to head for the Blue Ridge Parkway when you re in the mood for a scenic drive, there are some great alternative drives in the high country to consider, especially during peak seasons when the Parkway can become congested. The N.C. Scenic Byway initiative started in 1990, and the Colonial Heritage route was in the inaugural class. Now, there are more than 60 roadways in North Carolina that carry the official scenic byway designation. You ll know you ve found one when you see the green and teal scenic byway sign. Scenic byways in the Piedmont include the Hanging Rock Scenic Byway, which runs through Surry and Stokes counties east of U.S. 52; and Football Road, a two-lane countryside alternative to I-40 that runs from Greensboro to Carrboro. It s so named because in the age before four-lane roads this route was the way Triad UNC fans got to football games in Chapel Hill. Further east, scenic byways also take drivers down winding mountain roads or across the coastal plain. (You can even catch a ferry ride on the Outer Banks Scenic Byway.) Connie Morgan, coordinator of the scenic byway program for the N.C. Department of Transportation, says the byways not only direct people to some of the most beautiful parts of the state s natural beauty, they also help boost awareness and encourage preservation of these off-the-beaten-path treasures. And not every pretty road makes the cut, she says. They should tell a story, she says.

How does a road get designated as a scenic Byway? It isn t easy. It takes the completion of an extensive application denoting the cultural and natural significance of the journey.

They need to have a scenic quality above everything else, says Morgan, the byway coordinator. They can also have a cultural nature to them, or a geologic or natural feature. It could have recreational amenities nearby it. So there s a variety of things that can qualify a route. Here are several highly rated N.C. Scenic Byways nearby that would make nice day trips from Majestic Mountain: Pottery Road (43 miles; piedmont region). Located along N.C. 705 between Eagle Springs and Seagrove, this byway traverses through an area where several families from Staffordshire (the pottery center of England) once settled. Now, thanks to their descendants, nearly 80 potteries can be found in the vicinity. Yadkin Valley Scenic Byway (65 miles; foothills region). The grape-colored byway connects various vineyards and wineries in the Yadkin Valley area, starting from downtown Elkin and making a loop along U.S. 21, Swan Creek Road, Old U.S. 421, Rockford Road, Zephyr Road, and Springs Road. Upper Yadkin Way (25 miles; foothills region).this path traverses parts of Caldwell and Wilkes County along N.C. 268 between U.S. 321 and W. Kerr Scott Reservoir, in an area known as Happy Valley. Near Ferguson is the grave of Tom Dula, immortalized in the folk song Tom Dooley. Indian Lakes Scenic Byway (60 miles; mountain region). Skirting the state s western corners, this byway follows U.S. 129 from Topton to Deals Gap, where it continues along N.C. 28 to Almond. Drivers are treated to countless views including the Nantahala River, Fontana Dam, the grave of Junaluska, and the Tail of the Dragon. Waterfalls Byway (98 miles; mountain region). Named for the 200 waterfalls that surround the route, this memorable byway passes by notable sites including Cullasaja Gorge, Highlands, Cashiers, and Lake Toxaway. The trail follows Harshaw Road, Brasstown Road, Old U.S. 64, Settawig Road, and U.S. 64. There are numerous scenic byways in other parts of the state. To get more information on the N.C. Meet the 2016-2017 MMPOA Board Jeff Rush President Jeff and his wife, Marty have been full time residents since 2007. They have three daughters, Evia, Savanna and Olivia. (They are for hire!

Savanna and Olivia attend Wilkes Central High School and Wilkes Central Middle school, respectively, where both are very active in sports and church.

Marty is a Registered Diagnostic Pediatric Cardiac Sonographer and works in Hickory for Levine's Children Hospital.

5 Meet the MMPOA Board Jeff Rush President Jeff and his wife, Marty have been full time residents since They have three daughters, Evia, Savanna and Olivia. (They are for hire! Cleaning, mowing, watering flowers and feeding pets, etc.). Evia is a mechanical engineer and currently lives in Charlotte, but loves to come to the mountains for weekend visits. Savanna and Olivia attend Wilkes Central High School and Wilkes Central Middle school, respectively, where both are very active in sports and church. Jeff has been working in the counter top industry for 22 years and currently is an outside commercial sales rep. for Stoneworks, based out of Charlotte. Marty is a Registered Diagnostic Pediatric Cardiac Sonographer and works in Hickory for Levine's Children Hospital. The Rush family loves living on Majestic Mountain and you will often see them walking their three dogs, Charlie, Sophie and Sissy. Jeff's goals for Majestic Mountain are: To keep us moving in the right direction. Bob and Jeanie Wainwright reside in Charlotte, N.C. Jeanie is an elementary school guidance counselor and Bob does product development for the food industry. They have been weekenders on Majestic Mountain for the past eight years and treasure their time spent at The Great Escape to decompress. Bob is pleased to serve the community and is committed to helping shape a successful and sustainable future for our POA. Bob Wainwright Vice President Secretary Shawn and his wife Regina live and work full time in Charlotte, NC. He is by day a commercial audio video integrator and by night a semi-professional bassist for various rock-and-roll artists. The Love s bought their secluded lot on Ridge Run Road in After many years of camping on the lot and dreaming of possibilities, the Loves completed their own custom cabin in July You may have seen Shawn or Regina walking their dog on the mountain as his hobbies include music, dogs, reading biographies (in particular the WW2 era), and hiking.

Doug Kerman and his wife Ashley live full-time in Winston-Salem North Carolina. They have a house and property at 1986 Ridge run Road.

Now Ashley and Doug enjoy spending as many weekends as possible on the mountain relaxing with their three dogs Chloe, Mini Me and Eva as well as riding bikes and hosting friends and family.

Lee and Bill make their home near Charlotte and love to spend as much time as possible at their cabin.

6 Doug Kerman and his wife Ashley live full-time in Winston-Salem North Carolina. They have a house and property at 1986 Ridge run Road. They were drawn to the area by the local Mountain bike trails surrounding Kerr Scott Reservoir and found Majestic Mountain by pure luck. They fell in love and bought the property in Now Ashley and Doug enjoy spending as many weekends as possible on the mountain relaxing with their three dogs Chloe, Mini Me and Eva as well as riding bikes and hosting friends and family. Doug is a Senior Account manager at Inmar where he has worked for the last 9 years. Doug Kerman Treasurer Bill and Lee Griswold purchased their mountain home in Lee and Bill make their home near Charlotte and love to spend as much time as possible at their cabin. Bill serves as a Private Executive Coach and as the leader of several Vistage groups in the Charlotte NC area. He has held a variety of management positions up to and including President and CEO. Bill has served, and continues to serve as a corporate director for a number of publicly and privately held firms. Bill Griswold Director Bruce and Joanna Berkowitz have enjoyed their Majestic Mountain cabin since The first time they saw that view from the top of Sweetwater Road, they were hooked! Bruce and Joanna live full-time in Plantation, Florida, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale where they still work full-time as physicians. When he has the time, Bruce enjoys flying his Cirrus airplane (3 1/2hours to Hickory) or visiting their granddaughter in New York. Bruce enjoyed working with Roland, Ormond, Shawn, Bill, Bob and Tommy during his first term as a director and is looking forward to continue to help improve our community with the new board. Bruce Berkowitz Director Jacque Quick Director Jacque and Clyde Quick live in Burlington, NC. Jacque is a high school science teacher and Clyde is a pharmacist. Steve and Patsy Hamby built their cabin in They have been weekend regulars since its completion.

7 MMPOA Board News By Jeff Rush, President 2016 Road repairs: Road repairs have been completed and they look great. There are a couple of culverts we are planning to get cleaned out in the near future as well. Gate Entry: When entering Majestic Mountain, please allow both gates to open all the way before entering. There are sensors that stop the gate immediately, if you enter too early. As we all know, this can wear down the parts much quicker and lead to a costly repair. Mowing: As most of you know it s been a very rainy season and we have already have had two scheduled mowings. The everchanging views at Majestic Mountain in all seasons never grow old.
