1 Volume 50 Number 9 September 2006 The September meeting of the WYC will be held at the clubhouse on Friday, September 1 st beginning promptly at 8:00 P.M. Upcoming Events Labor Day Dock Party Sept. 3 rd Lobsterfest Sept. 9 th Oktoberfest Oct. 6 th Haul-out Oct. 14 th WYC Fall Clean-up Oct. 28 th Proposed Member Phil Swett has been proposed by Fred Richardson and Don Roper. Commodore s Cup Despite the rain, the Commodore s Cup 2006 Regatta was a great success. Although forced to eat inside on Saturday evening, thirty-six smiling faces enjoyed a great meal. Chef Hans Dahll oversaw the grill, cooking fine hamburgers and hot dogs to taste. Paul and Donna Delgado, Greg Keenan, Ali Boucher, Pam Hayes, Marcia and Steve Cotter, and Al Posnack contributed their skills in setting up, serving, and cleaning. The Sunday event enjoyed better weather. Fortyeight Club members and guests enjoyed a replay of the previous day s menu. Many more members were in attendance due to the more promising weather conditions. On both days a pancake breakfast was enjoyed by all. From the Entertainment Committee As always, the Bear Island Picnic was a tremendous success thanks to the leadership of Steve and Jeanie Selig and family. It was good to see so many young children who were able to participate in the games after the picnic. Once again this year, the Chicken BBQ was a resounding success, with record breaking attendance and almost perfect weather. The cook shack certainly was welcome during a brief but intense squall. We appreciate the hard work done by Larry Routhier and Bruce Johnson and their crew. Feeding 230+ hungry WYC members and guests is no easy job and these folks make it look easy every year. The 2006 Corn Roast was a huge success despite threatening weather, thanks to the planning and execution by Rick and Wendy Wilson and their huge crew. One hundred ninety hungry people were served, thanks to the work of Charlie and Alley Boucher, Tom and Dana Boucher, Ted, Stephanie and Katie Carl, Hans Dahll, Paul and Donna Delgado, Joel and Linda Edinburg, John and Moe Heckman, Andy and Martina Howe, Rick and Wendy Wilson and proposed member David and Brenda Stowe. Club members and guests enjoyed a wonderful spread from ribs to ice cream sundaes and once again, nobody went away hungry!

2 Special thanks to Glen Shaw who got the CO 2 tank filled in the nick of time, allowing for an uninterrupted pour of frosty, cold malted beverage!! The Labor Day Dock Party and Oktoberfest and Lobsterfest informational sheets are enclosed for your review. John Heckman Steve Coneys House Committee News By the time you read this the House Committee will have accomplished scraping and painting all the railings and steps around the club house. The sills on the lake side will have been sanded and urethaned and the picnic tables will have been rebuilt and painted. Another project completed was the replacement of rub rails on the main docks and the purchase and installation of the new Mosquito Magnet. We are waiting for the lake level to recede before we attempt to re-do the dinghy docks. The DES permit has been approved. Also, Scott Davis reports that stump grinding is underway for the trees removed. October 28 will be our big Fall Clean-up. Please schedule that day at the WYC. Will Reed House Committee Many Thanks Thanks to Steve Coneys for overseeing the rebuilding of picnic tables. Thanks to Chuck Moretti for replacing treads on the stairways. Wanted We re looking for a reasonably priced riding mower for the Club. If you can help, please contact an officer, trustee or Will Reed-House Committee Chair. Reminders Please be a good neighbor and check your halyards for clanking. Haul-out this fall will be on Oct. 14 th. There will be more to follow next month. Our neighbors have asked that we please not enter or exit our main dock by passing between their moored sailboat and swim raft. The concern is swimmer safety. American Eagle Schooner Trip Update Unfortunately, the schooner American Eagle folks cannot accommodate the WYC on a spring 2-day weekend trip in 2007 due to their busy schedule. However, there are two other options to consider. First, their Memorial Day weekend 3-day cruise (board Friday evening, sail, lobster bake, all the fixings, and return to Rockland Monday around 11AM) is totally open and we could block some or up to all of the cabins if we let them know by early October, i.e. sign up at the October WYC meeting or soon thereafter. Cost of the cruise is $455 per adult. The schooner carries 26 guests in 13 cabins. Second, the Eagle will charter a day sail, board at 10 A.M., return at 3 P.M. The cost, including lunch, is $100 per adult. For a day sail, she can carry 45 guests and we'd need to fill 'er up. Both options require a down payment, and full payment is needed by 6 weeks before boarding. I need to know if there are enough WYC members interested in either of these options to try and do something as a group. Call, , or stop me at the Club if either of these trips sound good to you. I'll keep the list and provide coordination if we're going forward. I'll try to answer any questions at the September meeting and show a 10 minute American Eagle video afterwards to whet your appetites. Years ago, Bob Frey set up a day sail on the Heritage from Rockland, and the group had a blast! Adrian Curtis

3 From the Commodore St. Laurent Property As all of you know who attended the August meeting of the WYC, the St. Laurent Property Committee presented their research to the membership. I would like to first thank Russ Thibeault for an outstanding presentation to the Club. Secondly, I would like to thank the entire committee (Walter Flinn, Casey Nickerson, Chris Shumway, Chuck Coons, Chuck Lowth, Chuck Morretti, Dan Smith, Jeff Kirchhoff, Larry Routhier, Stephen Nix, Steve Coneys, and Tom Sullivan) for a great effort. I would like to also thank everyone who attended the meeting. Everyone's discussion on the pros and cons of the purchase was important and helpful in making our final decision. Thanks to Rudy Lehr, for his reminder that the character of the club is it's membership. The vote not to continue pursuing the purchase of the property clearly stated the membership s desire to keep access to the Club affordable to all. Sunday Morning Breakfast This has truly been a fun event. I have been overwhelmed with those who have volunteered to help and by the turnout of members, their families, and their guests. We have certainly had some challenges in the kitchen. We have had proposed members as well as old members helping out and it has been a great opportunity to get to work with you all and it has been an opportunity for members to sit and visit on a Sunday morning. By the time you get to read this Jib Sheet there will be only one Sunday left, so if you haven't had a chance to come, please try. I would like to thank Martina Howe and Cindy Keenan for their generous donations of flowers for the tables each week. Thanks also, to everyone else who helped out. The list is too huge to name, but I thank you all. Special Work Parties in September Please plan to bring your shovel and rake and join in and help us with the drainage repair project on the front lawn on Sept. 16th. Kevin Hayes will be heading up this effort as we try to increase the capacity of the drainage system to prevent further damage from excessive storm run-off to our neighbor s property. We will be working with the Town of Gilford to help eliminate the water flow over Dockham Shore Road as well. Also coming up in September we will be beginning repairs to the dingy dock. I will have more specifics on this at the September meeting. Please help us keep the cost of these projects down so we can keep the membership costs down. If you have sponsored proposed members I encourage you and your proposed member to come and pitch in.
