FROM THE COMMODORE The Anniversary Party was a wonderful event. John Heckman planned the party perfectly. The food was ample and great. Jim Rogato s choice of the band added to the festive spirit. Conor Hayes was the ultimate bar tender. The History Committee under the leadership of Chad Squires put together a remarkable book with a great review of the past 75 years. The CD with so many photos is an added bonus. All members will receive a copy. Additional copies may be purchased for $15. John Goodhue arranged for Peter Ferber to create a painting of the WYC. He and Don Roper worked with Peter to include boats from across the years. It is a beautiful painting capturing the spirit of our wonderful setting on the lake and our many years of boating. Current and future club members will appreciate it for years to come. We are grateful to John and Don for the idea and their work for the painting and prints. Pepi Hermann has created some commemorative engraved glassware for the 75 th anniversary. These will add a festive element to any event. If these ideas do not provide enough suggestions for gifts Steve Selig has many items of 75 th anniversary clothing in the Ship s Store. He will be happy to help you shop. It was wonderful to have this party in our renovated clubhouse. Many appreciated the level access. The deck was a nice extension to main room. We were able to comfortably accommodate more than 200 without feeling cramped. The foundation and steel beams kept everyone in place. The floor did not bounce, sway or slide to the south. We will have Part Two of the anniversary celebration at the Annual Meeting. Members wrote notes at the 50 th anniversary that we found in the time capsule. A selection will be read at the meeting in January. Continued on next page

2 FROM THE COMMODORE CONT. We will create our own time capsule to be opened in 2037 for the 100 th anniversary. How many of us will be members then? We have a long and rich history. This party was a great celebration for us and a WYC HAPPENINGS tribute to those before us. We have much for which to be thankful and many hopes for the future of the WYC. All the Best, Rick As part of our 75th anniversary celebration John Goodhue asked Peter Ferber to create a painting of the Club with a representation of boats from several different time periods. An image of the painting is below. Prints have been made and are available for sale for $50 each. The WYC owns the original painting and the prints. Prints will be available at the December and the Annual Meeting. Alternatively you can contact Diana or John Goodhue. Checks should be made payable to the WYC. If you owe for a print you received at the 75th anniversary party please mail it to our PO box at WYC-Print, PO Box 11, Laconia, NH The painting will be hung in the club house.

3 Pepi Hermann has wine glasses and beer mugs with custom etching of a 75 th anniversary design. These include a beer mug, small wine glass and large wine glass for $25 each. Custom engraving is available for $2 extra. You can order at his shop or on line. ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE The 2012 Social Season was another series of door busters, ending with 200 members, proposed member and former members enjoying our 75 th Anniversary celebration with a wonderful evening of delicious hors doevres, great music and a delightful program put together by the WYC History Committee. I would like to thank John Knox, Conor Hayes, Robyn Pallis, Jack Donohue, Chris Weinmann, Moe Heckman, Jim Vito Rogato and Bruce Johnson who all pitched in to make the event run smoothly. Special thanks to our caterer Ray Kievit and his team! Please remember the Pepi Herrmann WYC anniversary wine glasses and beer mugs available for $25 each, personalized for an extra $2. These can be ordered directly from Pepi s website or by stopping by his shop. Thanks to Pepi for coming up with a great design and thanks to Pam Hayes for the inspiration. The 2013 Annual meeting will be held at The Gilford Community Church on Saturday January 12 th. Please see the insert for more details. The program portion will be reading the book from the 50 th party and developing a similar book to be put under glass for our 100 th anniversary in Thanks to everyone for a fine summer. John

4 This is just a reminder that the Annual Fall Clean-up will be held on Saturday starting at 8:00am (Please add this to your calendar). Bring your rakes, leaf blowers, tarps and gloves and plan on sprucing the place up for the Winter, or just lean on your rake and mingle and have coffee and donuts. (Yes, Proposed Members are welcome to help or lean on your rakes, etc., but please also introduce yourself to the folks around you). HOUSE COMMITTEE We also need about 12 to 15 volunteers to help Robyn Pallis complete the fall WYC highway clean-up which will occur right after we complete the club clean-up. (Please contact Robyn either before or the day of the clean-up, Saturday ). Thank you all for all your help and hard work for our club, Larry RACE COMMITTEE

5 BEAR ISLAND The Bear Island property was officially buttoned up for the winter on October 5th, although we did leave two moorings for membership use for those hearty enough to brave the cold weather until sometime in mid December. I would like to thank the following club members who have assisted in the opening and closing of Bear Island for the past decade for their loyal support and good camarderie; Don Sibson, Don Roper, Larry Routhier, Dave Keller, Steve Nix, Ed Philpot, John Goodhue, Jack Donohue, Bruce Gokey, Dave Williams, Chris Weinmann, Bill Nutter, Al Fasshauer, Dick Pendergast, Mike Curtin, John O'Brien & Graham Philpot. We would like to thank all of the club members for allowing us to enjoy another season as caretakers of this wonderful club treasure. We would also like to thank everyone who lent a hand thru out the season with keeping the property looking pristine. Let's hope for an early spring for the 2013 boating season. 6 WYC HISTORICAL COMMITTEE The members of the History Committee would like to thank all the people who helped with the Anniversary celebration. While Jim Rogato s choice of music, John Heckman s choice of wonderful food and Rick Wilson s Master of Ceremony were obvious, there were many others who contributed their time and talents making this a wonderful event. Our thanks to you all! For those members who already received their copy of the 75 th anniversary booklet on the 29 th, there is one misprint that I would like to correct. On page 72, both articles about junior sailing were written by Peter Harris. Thank you for making your own corrections. Over the next 2 months, the Historical Committee and the Officers and Trustees would like to gather your thoughts about what should be included in the time-capsule for the 100 th anniversary in Please do some thinking and write us between now and the annual meeting about your ideas. Then at the January meeting we hope to finalize your ideas for the centennial (can you believe it!) celebration. Chad Squires, Chairman IN MEMORIAM Two members of the extended WYC family have passed away in the past month. Avis Smart died at home recently. She was married to Bill Smart who became a member in Her son Christopher is a current member and a grandson Rob Merklinger is a proposed member. Andy and Anne Bartlett lost their daughter Amy Colby. Amy was the granddaughter of Rollie Mailloux. Our thoughts are with the large extended families of both Avis and Amy THANK YOU I would like to thank the following for helping me lower my mast the week before haulout. Chuck Coons, Dave Williams, Al Posnack, Jim Rogato, Chris and Steve Fay and Dorothy for supervising the whole operation. Also thanks to Andy Johnson who was a great help at the haulout. 7 YACHT YARD NEWS Once again, a cold day to haul boats, but despite the cold and wind, 2012 haulout was completed by early afternoon on Saturday, October 13 th. After last year s complaints of wet feet on the car crew, everything at the water end went smoothly this year. At the upper end of the yard, the cable holding the winch truck broke, but with the help of Scott Davis s truck and Pete Crosby s tractor ( and a lot of volunteer labor), all sixteen cradle boats and three trailer boats were out of the water by 2:00 and equipment was secured for the winter. Lots of people to thank: The prep crew that showed up on a rainy September 29 th to get the yard and car ready for haulout, including Mike Curtin and Steve Fay who replaced the catch mechanism on the land side of the car. Dave Williams and Dick Waitt for coffee and donuts. Rob Johnson who single handedly got our traditional hot pastrami lunch cooked and served (and it tasted soooo good!). Tom Sullivan for coming down on Friday to grease the ties. Kevin Coons for running the hoist all day with no wet feet on the car crew. Don Roper and Jack Donohue for manning the chase boat in the cold wind all day. BTW Don, thanks for bringing over the leftover chili from the Cold Duck. Scott Davis for the use of his pickup truck to pull boats up the yard. Sandy Storer for readying both the hoist engine and the hoist truck engine what a difference a little carburetor cleaning made! Pete Crosby for bringing his tractor down so we could move cradles around and pull trailer boats easily. The 40 or so volunteers who showed up on a cold morning to pull boats and smile while doing it. I think it is much a social event as a work event, but it s a good time when things go right. Al Herte for documenting it all and getting the slide show out so fast! If I missed anyone, Thank You also. We have a couple nominations for the Crank Award; the winner will be announced at the Annual Meeting in January. In the meantime, John Knox and I will have turned the water off before you read this. Boats will continue to drift in until Thanksgiving. I will probably move them around some at that time to make certain the Town plows have room to turn around. If anyone has any specific needs for storage (such as I m taking my boat to Florida in February and need it near the front ), let me know and we ll try to accommodate you as best we can. It does not appear at this time that there is need to change our winter storage rates.
