2 B how to get to upaya flying here, you have two airport choices: You can fly into Albuquerque International Sunport Airport and drive to Santa Fe or you can take the Sandia Shuttle Express (sandiashuttle.com for schedule, prices, and reservations). The Shuttle will drop you at Upaya s front door and take you back to the airport after your retreat. You may also fly into the Santa Fe Municipal Airport. They have direct flights form Dallas and Denver so it s easy to make connections through these hubs. Arriving at the Santa Fe Airport, you can take the Road Runner Shuttle (roadrunnershuttleandcharter.com or for schedule, prices, and reservations) or a taxi with Capital Cab to Upaya. from the albuquerque airport = Exit the Albuquerque airport and take Highway 25 NORTH towards Santa Fe for 60 miles. = Take Exit #282 to St Francis Drive North. = Follow St. Francis Drive to Cerrillos Rd and make a RIGHT on Cerrillos. = Take Cerrillos to Paseo de Peralta and make a RIGHT on Paseo de Peralta. = Follow Paseo de Peralta to E Alameda and make a RIGHT onto E Alameda. = Follow Cerro Gordo Rd 7/10 of a mile until you come to a concrete pillar with a mailbox and address 1404 and a hanging sign that says Adam Gabriel Armijo City Park of Santa Fe. 3 B parking, schedule, tuition parking at upaya There is a driveway and parking lot on both sides of Upaya s property. Once you have checked in, please use the private parking lot to the east (the second driveway) so that the first public parking lot can remain open for the city park next door. Reservations are not held without this deposit. Program fees include meals but not accommodations unless specified. You may register online by clicking the Register Online Now button on each program page. Please call ext. 112 if you d like to register by phone. paying for your program The balance of your program is due two weeks prior to the start of your visit (exceptions to this are Being with Dying training, Rohatsu, and all International trips). We do not keep credit card numbers on file (for security purposes). You may log in to our website to process your payment, call the registrar, or mail a check (see mailing address below). 4 B cancellation, lodging, meals cancellation policy We rely on your attendance to make faculty, housing, and food arrangements for Upaya s retreats. Please keep our cancellation policy in mind. We realize that your itinerary is subject to reality. Things happen. Plans change. Should you need to cancel, please consider donating to Upaya any payment you previously made. Rohatsu, Being with Dying training and International programs all have unique cancellation policies which can be found on their program pages. = Upaya retains a $50 processing fee for all cancellations 15 days or further from start of retreat. = If you cancel 14-8 days prior the retreat, Upaya retains your deposit: $100 for retreats or $200 for practice periods. = If you cancel 7-3 days prior to the retreat, Upaya retains half of all fees paid. = If you cancel 2 days or less prior to the retreat, Upaya retains all fees paid. lodging at upaya Our campus is beautifully designed with classic adobe buildings. These simple and elegant accommodations with shared bathrooms provide space for two to four retreat participants per room. Private accommodations are also available but very limited; please check for availability by calling ext. 112 or registrar@upaya.org. Double rooms (with 2 twin beds): $95 per person/per night Dorm rooms (with up to 4 twin beds): $70 per person/per night RV (up to 32 feet): $35 - $50 per night We have limited lodging capacity and lodging fills quickly. We encourage early lodging commitment on most programs. All accommodations are exclusive of meals unless booked in conjunction with retreat programs. Linens, including sheets, pillow, blanket, comforter, towel, and washcloth are provided. We wash the linens with Earth-friendly products and they are not ironed. Our guests enjoy the serene and peaceful beauty of our campus and so we encourage silence after 9 pm through to the end of breakfast the next morning at 9 am. Each guest room has a welcome binder containing helpful information including suggestions about things to do in and around Santa Fe should you decide to add more days before or after any program for a personal stay. There are laundry facilities in various buildings. Please leave a donation of $1 per load in the jar near each washing machine. Personal retreatants may keep their own schedule or join the residents in their daily activities. If guests wish, they may explore the trails along the Santa Fe River and the nearby foothills. The Randall Davey Audubon Center & Sanctuary is within walking distance. To schedule a personal retreat, call ext. 112 or registrar@upaya.org. meals at upaya: nourishing mind and body Our food is vegetarian and procured from local organic sources whenever possible. The importance of good cooking, quality nutrition, and a diet that respects both the lives of our fellow creatures and the livelihoods of those who produce our food has long been a cornerstone of Zen practice. In fact, the head cook or tenzo is traditionally considered to be among the most important positions in the monastery, second only to the Abbot. Upaya continues this tradition with a plentiful and incredibly delicious menu that is made fresh every day. The care and compassion that goes into the preparation of the food can be tasted in every mouthful. To dine at Upaya truly is to savor the joy of practice. We can prepare gluten and dairy free meals and can sometimes accommodate other dietary restrictions. Please contact the registrar at registrar@upaya.org or ext.112 to discuss your needs. Additional meals before or after your program may be purchased. We require advance reservations. Breakfast is $8, lunch is $15, and dinner is $12.

5 B miscellaneous information what to wear, what to bring, and weather We recommend that you wear loose, comfortable, darkcolored clothing. Wear shoes that you can take off easily as we do not wear shoes in the temple and guest buildings. Sturdy walking shoes may also be useful for a jaunt in our nearby hills. We often have short, spectacular rainstorms in the summer, so a rain jacket is helpful during that season. Also, consider packing sun-block, lip balm, and saline solution for your eyes. Please bring an alarm clock and/or watch; however, please mute any alarm sound when in the zendo. In Zen, being on time is particularly important. Santa Fe is located at 7,000 feet above sea level in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Santa Fe is comfortably dry but can have rapid weather changes. It is not uncommon to have 30 degree temperature differences between night and day. Santa Fe averages 300 days of glorious sunshine, 14 inches of rain and 17.5 inches of snow each year. For weather information check water is precious Since our water resources are so precious, we try to use them mindfully. We ask that you do the following during your stay with us: = Take a shorter shower, or do it navy style wet down, turn off the water, soap down, and rinse. = Use the bucket in the shower to catch the cold water until it warms up for your shower. You may pour this water on a plant or use it to flush the toilet. = Please report leaking faucets or fixtures to the office. you are precious too, so drink lots of water We live in a high desert climate. At 7,000 feet, the air may seem thin, especially if you are coming from sea level. Drinking water is the best way to adjust to the altitude smoothly. To prepare for these changes, it s a good idea to start drinking extra water several days before your arrival. It is very easy to become dehydrated without realizing it. Please, continue to drink extra water during your entire stay. When in doubt, take a sip. dana* giving is a precious gift At the end of each program, please consider the profound value of the teachings and of those who offer them. Your gift will support of our teachers, residents, and Roshi Joan Halifax. We deeply appreciate your offering. Your Dana is considered a tax-deductible donation. Most teachers do not receive payment for their teachings; instead, they receive Dana to support their lives and the dharma. The Residents who cook and care for you only receive a small stipend. Their service is part of their practice, and Dana is traditionally given in response to their efforts. Dana allows us to open our hearts and foster empathy and kindness. It builds warm connections based on the true value of our shared experience. We strongly invite you to participate in this practice. The practice of Dana is fundamental and integral to Upaya. The opportunity for people to access their own quality of generosity has been a part of Buddhist teaching ever since the days of the Buddha. Your Dana is a precious and is a contribution that helps to sustain the ethos of service that is the heart of Upaya. * Dana is a Sanskrit/Pali word that means generosity or giving, an important Buddhist practice. other important information Upaya s location, acclaimed architecture, and commitment to compassion and service, offers a rare environment for individuals and groups. The architecture of our zendo, the inspiration for which came during a visit to a teahouse in Japan, is both organically Southwestern and traditionally Zen. A warm, loving silence envelops Upaya. We are a nonsmoking, alcohol-free campus and encourage fragrance-free products (many guests have sensitivities). Although we love animals, we ask that you please leave your pets at home. The campus is connected to the Internet by free wireless service. As you walk about the campus, you will encounter many beautiful artworks by such internationally recognized artists as Kazuaki Tanahashi and Mayumi Oda. Some pieces are available for sale and you may inquire at the front desk. We have a small bookstore in the River House foyer with books, CDs, and DVDs by Roshi Joan Halifax as well as Upaya T-shirts, water bottles, and other apparel.
