They are known to many of us through our wine dinners which Walt conducted. (Full disclosure the Martins have known them for many years and have an I won t tell if you won t tell relationship.) Linda grew up in Pittsburgh and earned a degree in Political Science at Penn State. Linda worked as a social worker in Philadelphia for The Prevention of Cruelty to Children. She then had four children. During this time, they moved to various cities as Walt Walt, Linda and Buster was transferred in his job. Linda taught nursery school at the Radnor Methodist Church and did nature programs for children. She volunteered at the Wayne Nursing Center. For many years she worked with R.S.V.P. the Retired Senior Volunteers Program and became the Lower Merion Coordinator. RSVP recruited and placed 55 and older volunteers (many executives) with various nonprofit agencies. Linda volunteered with the Philadelphia Horticulture Society at the Flower Show. She is a member of the Villanova Garden Club. For many years she was on the Board of Inglis House. She volunteered for Elder Net, was the president for several years and is still on the Advisory Committee. Linda may not seem very athletic but don t be fooled. She played tennis and one day announced that she had learned to serve an ace after just watching the U.S. Open. She then served an ace. Walt grew up in Northeast Philadelphia and played football (Center and Linebacker and then Right Tackle) at Northeast High School and won a football scholarship to Rutgers. (One of Walt s proudest achievements is becoming an Eagle Scout.) At Rutgers he played Right Tackle and weighed 225lbs. Walt was a Psychology Major. He took advanced ROTC after which he entered the Army as a Second Lieutenant. He was in Georgia and Indiana and became involved in logistics. In 1953 he was sent to Korea to a United Nations prisoner of war camp on the island of Kojido. After being discharged in 1954 Walt started working with Bell of Pennsylvania, initially in Bala Cynwyd which was where he met Linda when she came home from Penn State. At Bell he was involved in many different departments. He received a Sloan Fellowship to MIT and earned a Masters degree in Industrial Management. (Continued on page 2)

Around age 40, Walt felt the need for exercise so he started running around the block at night, then progressed to running in over 200 races. He became interested in administration and was one of the founders of the Philadelphia Master Races. He officiated and was often the meet director or the official timer for many races including the Penn Relays. Walt is also a tennis player and joined the Cynwyd Club in In 1984 the breakup of AT&T occurred and Walt stayed with AT&T, eventually becoming Vice President of Information Services. He was on negotiating committees during several strikes. Walt retired in 1989 and volunteered as an executive with RSVP. He helped several congregations with their financial matters. After Linda retired from RSVP, Walt was on the Board. Years ago Walt and their kids entered an exhibit in the Harvest Show and eventually went on to entering The Philadelphia Flower Show. His specialty was bulbs, (Tulips, Daffodils, Hyacinths) He built a walk-in refrigerator to slow their growth and tables with growing lights to speed their growth so they would be in top shape at the right time to be exhibited. He won hundreds of awards and had a friendly competition with Dorrance Hamilton. AT&T was a sponsor of the Flower Show and Walt was on the Executive Committee and also served as Chairman. Walt and Linda have four children: Alan age 60 works for Mitsubishi Bank in New York. Joe, age 58 is a Marketing Consultant and entrepreneur. Joan has her Masters degree in Public Health. Amy is a Nurse Practitioner. They have 5 granddaughters. Buster their dog is on permanent loan from Amy.

4 VOICE Page 3 MONARCH BUTTERFLIES Monarch butterflies are beautiful and some consider them the king or Monarch of butterflies. Monarchs have evolved with milkweed and must have it to survive. Milkweed is the ONLY thing the caterpillars can eat. From the milkweed, the larvae and butterflies obtain a substance that is toxic to birds and animals that try to eat it. The bright colors of the Monarch serve as a warning to predators. The Viceroy butterflies mimic the bright colors of the Monarch and benefit by scaring off predators even though Viceroys are not toxic. Butterflies go through four stages: egg, caterpillar, pupa or chrysalis and then butterfly. Monarchs also have four generations, each of which goes through the four stages. The first three generations live only two to six weeks. The fourth lives for six to eight months. Working backwards, in February and March, the fourth generation comes out of hibernation to find a mate. They then migrate north and east in order to find a place to lay their eggs. This will be the first generation of the Monarchs. In March and April, the eggs are laid on milkweed plants. They hatch into baby caterpillars, also called the larvae. It takes about four days for the eggs to hatch. Then the baby caterpillar doesn t do much more than eat the milkweed in order to grow. After about two weeks, the caterpillar will be fully-grown and find a place to attach itself so that it can start the process of metamorphosis. It will attach itself to a stem or a leaf using silk and transform into a chrysalis. Although, from the outside, the 10 days of the chrysalis phase seems to be a time when nothing is happening, it is really a time of rapid change. Within the chrysalis the old body parts of the caterpillar are undergoing a remarkable transformation, called metamorphosis, to become the beautiful parts that make up the butterfly that will emerge. The monarch butterfly emerges from the chrysalis, pumps fluid into its wings to expand them, dries the wings and then flies away, feeding on flowers and just enjoying the short life it has left, which is only about two to six weeks. This first generation Monarch butterfly will then die after laying eggs for generation number two. The second generation of monarch butterflies is born in May and June, and then the third generation will be born in July and August. Each of these will die in two to six weeks. The fourth generation is born in September and October and goes through exactly the same process as the first, second and third generations except for one part. The fourth generation of monarch butterflies does not die after two to six weeks. Instead, this generation of monarch butterflies migrates to warmer climates like Mexico and California and will live for six to eight months until it is time to start the whole process over again The monarch butterflies will spend their winter hibernation in Mexico and some parts of Southern California where it is warm all year long. If the monarch lives in the Eastern states, usually east of the Rocky Mountains, it will migrate to Mexico and hibernate in oyamel fir trees. If Overwintering Monarchs the monarch butterfly lives west of the Rocky Mountains, then it will hibernate in and around Pacific Grove, Monarchs Caterpillar, Chrysalis and Butterfly Caterpillar going into Chrysalis California in eucalyptus trees. Monarch butterflies use the very same trees each and every year when they migrate, which seems odd because they aren t the same butterflies that were there last year. These are the new fourth generation of monarch butterflies. Monarch butterflies are the only insect that migrates to a warmer climate that is 2,500 miles away each year. The Monarch butterfly migrates for 2 reasons. They cannot withstand freezing weather in the northern and central continental climates in the winter. Also, the larval food plants (milkweed) do not grow in their winter overwintering sites, so the spring generation must fly back north to places where milkweed plants are plentiful. Monarch numbers have declined greatly over the years. Causes include loss of milkweed, use of pesticides and freezing temperatures at the hibernation site that killed off many of them. Organizations are encouraging planting milkweed and avoiding pesticides in an attempt to restore the Monarch numbers.
