1 Clover Connections Pulaski County During the Pulaski County Fair there were several 4-H exhibits that qualified for the Missouri State Fair. We were proud to have them displayed to represent Pulaski County 4-H! 3 Tammy Gillespie Quality ( Q ) Tip Series Missouri 4-H is interested in making the best better in our youth, our leaders and our programs. An ongoing program improvement process called Quality Matters in 4-H is underway in Missouri. The Quality or Q-Tip series includes short, research-based tips to help youth and adult leaders be more intentional about planning 4-H club meetings and other events where members feel safe, supported and engaged in fun, interactive activities. Reframing Conflict Conflict occurs when two or more people s beliefs, actions or attitudes don t line up. This can happen between adults and youths. Conflict is a normal occurrence in youth programs, and it is one of the most chronic issues noted by youth workers. Until we are comfortable and consistent when we deal with conflict, we will continue to find it a distraction in daily program life. According to HighScope, to provide a high quality program, youth workers must reframe conflict and find ways for growth and learning inside these often-frustrating situations. A few key behaviors that help reframe conflict: Leaders approach the situation calmly and acknowledge feelings. Leaders ask involved youths about the cause and the possible solutions. Leaders encourage youths to consider the effects of their actions. There is follow-up afterward. By reframing conflict using these behaviors, staff build a healthy, cohesive group and produce learning and growth for the young person. 4-H Volunteer Application Process for the 2018 Program Year* Tammy Gillespie Interested in being a 4-H volunteer? 4 Clover Kid Corner Thank You Notes Teach a Lifelong Skill Have you considered helping your Clover Kids write and send handwritten thank you notes? Teaching children to write thank you notes is a simple act that goes a long way in the development of good social skills. Here are a couple of suggestions to help you get your Clover Kids going: Be positive. Briefly explain that the gift-giver will feel good knowing the present is appreciated. The way you talk about thank you notes will influence whether your children think of writing them as a chore or as something thoughtful they can do for someone who has done something thoughtful for them. Give choices and help make writing thank you notes fun. For children that don t yet write encourage them to draw pictures. Provide a variety of interesting and colorful paper, pens/pencils, crayons/markers, glitter and glue. Let them choose the ones they will use. Make the handwritten note a special message from the heart. Help children understand the effort they put into creating a thank you is just as valuable as the gift itself. Be a good example and write letters! Children learn to be courteous and responsible by watching other adults. 6 Pulaski County 4-H Council The Pulaski County 4-H Council held their first meeting on August 8. In attendance were representatives from four of the county s 4-H programs. The group discussed the role of the 4-h council and the importance of having representation from each of the community clubs and programs in the county. The next meeting will be September 19th at 6:00 p.m. at the Pulaski County Extension office. We will elect officers and begin working on Bylaws for the council. Anyone interested in Pulaski County 4-H is welcomed to attend, but we especially hope to have at least one representative from each club! One of the requests from the meeting was the establishment of a Pulaski County 4-H Council Facebook Page. That has been done and we hope you will all follow and like us on Facebook!
