1 NORTH STAR WHEEL Volume 42 Issue 6 September 2009 Join the Badger Wheels Chapter in NSP The Badger Wheel Chapter is coming to the North Saint Paul History Cruise on Friday, September 4. This is another chance to get the Studebaker out AND get together with our Badger friends. It will be a fun night. There are numerous food vendors set up all along 7th Avenue (main street) and hundreds of pre 1975 cars show up. The event officially starts at 6:00, but the streets and adjacent parking lots fill up fast, so getting there early is advised. CAR SHOW CHAIRMAN NEEDED FOR 2010 After four years of chairing the Memorial Day and Labor Day Car Shows, I am ready to play a smaller role for these events. This is basically a job of coordination, scheduling and a minimal amount of labor for a few hours on those weekends. There is a great Car Show Committee of helpers in place for you to work with and have some fun. Those that have attended the these shows know that the Blacksmith folks and layout make these shows turnkey in many respects. I will be happy to counsel for another year. I have detailed checklists of the activities and things to do or bring for the shows. The Chapter is fully equipped with all the necessary equipment to run the shows. You will not be stepping into any problems and, with continued creativity, these two shows will certainly continue to be successful for the Chapter. 2 N O R T H S T A R W H E E L Our Week In Cedar Rapids Reflections of the 2009 SDC International Meet by Dean Elstad I put the camper on our 60 Champ Saturday night after we got back from a week at the cabin. The two haven t been hooked up since the meet in Omaha! Bright and early Sunday morning we cleaned it out and assessed the inventory. Sandy prepared the utensils and I piled up the needed accessories extension cords, tools, fluids, repair manuals, our registration stuff and Sandy s bike. Good thing it s a 3/4-ton Studebaker pickup truck! New this year were planks and sawhorses to put under the camper each night so I didn t have to back the pick-up under the camper. I m sure our neighbors in the campground in Omaha didn t appreciate all my attempts at midnight to sneak the truck back under the camper. The Cherry Bomb muffler doesn t soften the sweet sound of the Stude V-8 very much Satisfied we had everything (there is no kitchen sink in our camper anymore); we went in and packed up the food, beverages and personal stuff. Again, good thing it s a 3/4-ton! We left Monday morning after taking Emma to doggie camp, not as early as planned, but we did miss the morning traffic. I figured a nice slow drive down to Cedar Rapids (270 miles) would take us about 6 hours. I forgot about all those fuel stops. We got lots of thumbs up from passing motorists. Yep, everyone passed us We arrived at the host hotel too late for registration so we headed over to the campsite, just 3/4 mile away and set up. We went back and talked our way into Welcome Night. Saw lots of North Star members and Studebaker friends and enjoyed a very tasty buffet. We met new Stude owners too! We had desert at a local fast food spot with a few of the members and swapped stories about the trip to Cedar Rapids. The camp ground was filling up with motorhomes, motorcoaches and Studebaker campers. It was a nice spot, next to the vendors and where the Concours would be on Thursday, except for no showers and only port-o-potties. But the price was right $100 for the week. We saved a spot next to us for Jerome and Amy. They arrived Wednesday in their beautiful M5 pulling the Stude-Scamp camper. On Tuesday we went to seminars at the hotel, and spent the evening with friends that moved to Cedar Rapids 19 years ago. He runs an automotive repair shop and even had a Hawk from Minnesota in for exhaust work. They had a great dinner for us followed by a soak in their hot tub. Wednesday afternoon was the Amana Colonies tour. After that, the Studebaker Truck Farmers dinner. The food and company was great, and I especially enjoyed an Amana micro brewery beer! Our evening was spent at the SDC auction where I picked up a new Champ hood. Then off to the hotel bar catching up with the two guys from South Africa we met last year in Lancaster, who are entering the Peking to Paris race with their 1929 Studebaker (see page X). They were sitting with Ed and Carol Bauer, their friends Paul and Kathy from Connecticut and a few other folks. Perry Wolf and Dennis Borich were hanging out there too. Of course Thursday is when we get to see all the shined up vehicles. This year a new SDC policy had display vehicles allowed amongst the judged vehicles for no charge. That meant the 60 Champ got to be parked among some beautiful trucks. It was an honor to be in the back row with a couple of rare 4-wheel drive pickups and the big diesels. Fun night was, well, really fun! The snacks were good and the state fair games for the little prizes a blast. Several club members took home quite a haul The band was really fun, the young kid impersonating Lawrence Welk was really good; we took in quite a few dances. Okay, it was Buddy Holly, not the king of champagne bubbles Friday we went antiquing in the sister city of Marion. I found a nice copy of the Woodstock record album for $2. Friday evening was the awards banquet. We were a little late getting ready so ended up sitting with a group of Iowans and had a delightful time. If you haven t heard about the awards program, ask me the next time you see me. Saturday was another nice, slow, uneventful, drive back home, passing about every other gas station (or so it seemed) on the way north to Minnesota. Got home, picked up Emma, unloaded the camper and put it away until the next SDC meet that is close enough to drive the Champ. continued on page 3 T W O

3 N O R T H S T A R W H E E L Reflections of the 2009 SDC International Meet From Page 2 We enjoy camping out, it s a little cheaper and we meet the nicest folks in the campgrounds sharing their zest for Studebakers, whether it s with a tent or a big buck motor coach, we re all there for the Studebakers Our thanks to Al and Marlene Meeker and the Hawkeye Chapter members for another excellent SDC International. Sandy visiting with long time North Star member John Lidberg, who now lives in Colorado From the back ofthechamp... Greetings, Here it is nearing the end summer. And what a great summer it s been (although we could use more rain) for driving the Studies to all the chapter events arranged by Maynard. Hopefully you ve taken your Studebakers to car shows, cruises or just around the block. You can still put some miles on your vehicles, maybe even the trip to the Upper Mississippi Valley Zone meet, before putting them away. Fall is still a long, long, long way off. But summer s not quite over yet. There are still many events on the activities list for September. First is the Orphan Car Show on Labor Day, 9/7 in Hugo; then the Cruise in Jordan on 9/11; the remarkable Studebaker Swap Meet cosponsored with the Badger Wheel club in Hudson on September 19th; and finally, our fall picnic, September 26th at Gieselman s in Annandale. Remember, this is all just in September! Then we get back to the monthly meetings, starting with October s on Thursday the 8th at Latuff Restaurant in Plymouth. And don t forget the Drive for Kids on Sunday, October 11th. Fall usually brings out all the political lawn signs and media ads which brings me to a very important item Election of Chapter Officers. At our annual meeting in January, we will elect a Vice President, Secretary and one Director. Terms are two years. If you have any interest, are curious what duties and time commitments are involved, or are willing to serve, please call, or pull me aside at a club event. I will personally nominate you! We have a great chapter and I hope we can get several candidates to come forward for each position. Here s a chance for you to step up and give a little bit more to the chapter. We also need members for the nominating committee so please call me if you would assist with this important item which we will discuss at the October meeting. Speaking of the October meeting, I ll bring my pictures from Cedar Rapids. If anyone else has pictures, please call me, we ll use the club projector. I d also like everyone to bring pictures of before and after of your car, or any shots of rebuilding or restoration to share with the group. This may get some members motivated to work on their Stude s this winter. There s lots of great weather left for driving the Studies before putting them away. After all, we are the Studebaker Drivers Club! Look for more detailed information on all the activities in this newsletter. Thanks.
