From the Sidecar Fall is finally here; and with it not only comes the beauty of the leaves changing color, but some of the best riding weather is available to us in October and November with the sunny days and cool evenings. Now is the time to rack up those final miles for the high mileage award which will be announced at the Chapter Christmas Party in December. With the majority of the year behind us, we are looking for the first recipient of a Rider Recognition Award. As a reminder from our February gathering and newsletter, the qualifications for the award are: Rider Recognition: Attend 15 Chapter I calendar events on a bike as a rider. Must include 5 of each of the following: 5 Monthly gatherings at Delmonico s 5 Ride-to-Eats 5 Chapter Saturday or Sunday Rides Back Seat Rider Recognition: 5 Monthly gatherings at Delmonico s 5 Ride-to-Eats 5 Chapter Saturday or Sunday Rides Cager Recognition: Attend 15 Chapter I calendar events in a vehicle including o 5 Monthly Gatherings o 10 Ride to Eats You can qualify for more than one program as long as all requirements are met for each. This is done on an honor system and you track your own progress; so, look back at your calendar, and check out past Chapter calendars from our newsletters: and make note of the events you have attended on the form below. Will you be the first Chapter I member to be recognized?!?!? GWRRA Chapter I Rider Recognition Programs Participants track their own progress. When the program(s) you have selected is completed turn in your card. At the next monthly gathering you will be presented with a certificate of recognition. NAME RIDER CO-RIDER CAGER Chapter Gathering (insert date) / / / / RTE (insert date) / / / / / Additional RTE Cagers (insert date) / / / / Weekend ride (insert date) / / / / In October we will have the first planning meeting of our Fun Committee. A special thank you to Karen Bristow, Cindy Deason, Gene Littleton and Judy McClard for serving on this committee. We know they have a lot of great ideas that they are anxious to share throughout the year.
Please be sure to dig out your GWRRA membership card and check the expiration date. If your membership has expired, or your expiration date is coming up, please contact GWRRA to renew. Renewal is available online by clicking the following link: In the coming months we will have various items to give away: 2 fire pits are just one example. Just like other organizations, we ask that you be current in your membership to participate in the free drawings. So, be sure to check your cards. There many benefits to becoming a member of GWRRA, some of which you may not even be aware of. Click on the following link: to see what GWRRA provides its members, including long term care insurance, life insurance, Medicare supplemental insurance, pet insurance, hotel discounts, rental car discounts, vacation and cruise discounts, motorcycle shipping discounts - just to name a few. These are all in addition to the Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge that we are already aware of. It s not the destination... it s the journey! Ride safe, Bruce and Jan Chapter I Directors Autumn Riding It s now official. Summer is over (according to the calendar anyway). The leaves are beginning to change their colors and fall. At this time of the year, I felt it is time to remind everyone of some of the hazards of fall riding. First off are the harvest-time hazards. Farmers are out in the fields harvesting their crops. This means that there will be big pieces of farm equipment moving from field. Some of this stuff is getting so big that it can take up the whole width of the road, especially on the narrower back roads. We need to take extra care when riding these roads. You never know what may be just around the next curve. Just a week ago, I was returning home from my class reunion in the car. As I was entering a town, there was an intersecting road slanting in from the right. Although I had the right-of-way, I was keeping an eye on a guy driving a huge combine on the side road. As he neared the highway, he never slowed down or even turned his head to check for traffic on the highway. I had to get on the brakes right away to keep from hitting him. Also, as a result of the harvest, the deer and other animals are losing their cover, so they are moving around a lot more. And the Rut season is approaching, when the bucks are paying more attention to the does than the traffic on the roads. The second thing to watch for is the leaves on the road. A few leaves and a little moisture and the roadway is suddenly very slippery. And when we start getting some frosty mornings, it will be even worse. Slow down a little and watch for possible slick spots. Also, as a note to our Spyder riders, the falling leaves will also tend to gather a lot more in the air intakes of the Spyder this time of the year; so, you may want to clean those out a little more often. The autumn also means that the sun is lower in the sky and can make it a bit harder to see what s in front of you when riding in the later afternoon. One last thing I want to mention is that with the onset of cooler weather, you may need to adjust the air pressure in your tires. Rider Educator Norm Lake Norm Lake Rider Educator
2017 REGION E (FINALE) RALLY PRIDE IN AMERICA by Marlene Cloude 2017 Region E Individual of the Year In 2014, I was fortunate enough to be selected by Chapter I staff to be the 2015 Individual of the Year. Then, the next year, during Spring Fling at Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, I became the 2016 District Individual of the Year. At that time, I was already committed to a trip of a lifetime to Europe, so I thought my journey had ended there, since the Region Rally would have conflicted with my trip. As luck would have it, due to an unexpected rule change, I qualified for the 2017 Regional Individual of the Year selection process during the Region E Rally, Pride in America, held in Williamsburg, Iowa, near the Amana Colonies last month. We sadly learned in recent weeks, that GWRRA has had some organizational decisions to make, just as many groups and businesses face on a daily basis. As such, the GWRRA structure and hierarchy is going through a major change. One of the changes is that this will be the last year for the Region level in the GWRRA organizational chart. The Finale Rally, as some of us are now fondly referring to it, was well attended, full of fun activities, seminars, entertainment, scenic rides, bike show, light show, good food and ice cream! The Region staff are all to be commended on their ability to keep over 200 Goldwing riders busy and entertained over the long weekend. Is there a point to all this? Well, heck yeah! There were four wonderful couples in the Region E (Finale) Rally selection process for 2017 Region E Couple of the Year and there were four individuals vying for the 2017 Region E Individual of the Year. Each and everyone of these fine people did an excellent job of representing their respective states within Region E. All I can say is that the competition was excellent, but hardly seemed such since everyone was so welcoming. Congratulations to one and all! You re winners just for being there and experiencing the fun, safety and knowledge.
MAP GRAND SLAM HOMERUN! Each month, I gather statistics from the District Chapters to submit to Region E in regard to any motorist awareness activities held in the past month. It struck me that other Chapters do some awesome work in getting the word out that might get our creative juices flowing. Since baseball season is winding down, what better way for others to take a page out of the score book and prepare for next season! Ball caps are off to Gene and Karen Kaufman, Directors of Missouri Chapter O, for their efforts in organizing such an outstanding MAP opportunity! Major kudos is also sent to Missouri Chapters W2 and Z for their partnership, assistance, support and participation. On June 24, 2017, approximately 90 participants from these three Missouri Chapters joined together for a grand slam homerun! It was part of the River City Rascals professional baseball team s Faith and Family Night at the CarShield Field in O Fallon, Missouri. Before you read any further, I hope you will take a moment to look at these links to see how amazing this evening was for EVERYONE. Ricky Rick Photography - motorcycles parked outside the Car- Shield stadium and others: BaseballRivercityrascals/2017-River-City-Rascals-Baseball- Season/ River-City-Rascals-5-vs-Normal- Cornbelters-11/i-GwrbPKG/A MO Chapter Z Photos: album/ / ? authkey=cjptwthq9pbmyw As they say, pictures are worth a thousand words! But Karen Kaufman added that there were 1800 fans at the game. They had 3 public service announcements before and during the game. The Chapter participants were invited down on the field before the game, as well, while the recognition announcement was read. They had 38 bikes on display at the front of the stadium as the fans walked in and they handed out MoDOT items with Watch for Motorcycle logos on them. Folks, it doesn t get any easier than this. In my experience, if you reach out, these organizations are eager and excited for you to be a part of the evening. They also go out of the way to promote your cause and it s FREE. There are many community opportunities that are out there to make the motoring public aware and to share, because Ultimately, it s your responsibility to ARRIVE ALIVE. Marlene Cloude, M.A.P. 7 HO, HO, HO, WHO WANTS TO GO By Marlene Cloude Ladies of Ch I (& lady friends & family) - Mark your calendars for November 18, 2017, for the annual River Ridge Winery Lunch and Yule Log Christmas outing. As in past years, IL Chapter Q has been invited to join us. Meet at 10:00 AM at Jackson Walmart to ride/carpool to the Cafe. OR meet at the Fermentation Room Cafe by 11 AM in Commerce, Missouri. After lunch, we will drive over to the Yule Log Cabin and view their Christmas Tree and ornament displays in a country setting. This is always an enjoyable kickstart to the holiday season for the ladies of Chapters IQ and any family and friends to get together and get into the holiday spirit. For this to be a relaxing day for all and due to the nature of the environment (winery and breakable ornaments in close quarters), we ask that guests be no younger than 12 yrs of age. You can always go back for a family outing another day. Marlene Cloude will need a head count of attendees by November 4th at the latest. Please let her know if you will meet to carpool also, otherwise we ll see you at the Café at 11 AM. Here is a link to the Cafe menu, and the page also has a link to the Yule Log Cabin. Dress is Christmas Casual. We have requested indoor dining for this day, but you may need a jacket for the cabin visit. Questions or concerns? Contact Gene Littleton or Marlene Cloude
SANTA Rides a Motorcycle And Supports Toys for Tots By Marlene Cloude I learned long ago that Santa really does ride a motorcycle. It s a long story, but suffice it to say, there is a young man in Florida today, who, at the age of 5 years old, saw Santa ride up on his bike and hand deliver the one toy his parents could not find! During the past year, our Chapter participants have been bringing in toys to contribute to the local, Marine-sponsored Toys for Tots campaign. Gene Littleton has been coordinating efforts to submit our contributions to the effort. While we don t have all the information as to their upcoming needs, one detail that has come to our attention is the need for volunteers to bag up the gifts for the individual families who have requested assistance from the program. This is a need I never really thought about, but it makes sense. How do the multitudes of donated toys get sorted, bagged, labeled and given to the families? As best we know now, it s a week-long effort of volunteers at a designated location TBD (possibly the local National Guard Armory), during which time all of the above occurs. It came to mind that, similar to when we packed backpacks of food for kids in previous years, we could come together for this awesome opportunity, wearing our Chapter shirts and being compassionately involved with our community. Stay tuned to the next newsletter and Facebook/ s to read about more details of this Motorist Awareness opportunity for us! The 5th Annual(?) Christmas Cookie/Candy Exchange... will take place during our Chapter I Christmas Party that is scheduled to take place on December 9, In past years, we filled 3 Treat Bags for each participant to take home with them full of scrumptious, holiday favorites. We hope to have more of you take part this year! We ve also changed it up a bit so that if candy is your forte, you can make that instead! It s never too early to start thinking about your family favorite Christmas cookie/candy recipe to bake/make and share with others. Please text, FB message, or Marlene Cloude to let me know if you will participate this year so that I have a treat bag for each participant to take home their goodies! If you do participate, the only requirement is that you bake and bring at least two cookies to trade with each of the other participants. Place two cookies in clear, plastic baggies or saran type wrap and have a baggie for each participant to take home. We will have Treat Bags for each participant to take home the cookies they receive in exchange for the ones they brought. Participation is open to guys and gals. One final request is that you provide the recipe for your culinary choice to me so that I can share them with others. - Marlene Cloude
