The bus company, Butler s Tours, will take you from the airport to your hotel in. Like Venice, the city is built upon water, and the city center is built on an island in the River Lee, just upstream of Harbour. Among others you will visit the beautiful Boole stained-glass window in the Aula Maxima, the Ogam Stone Corridor, and the wonderful Honan Chapel, as well as the newly refurbished Crawford Observatory. The university was founded in 1845 as one of three Queen s Colleges located in Belfast,, and Galway. Public Museum is situated in Fitzgerald Park on the Mardyke. The present museum was opened in 1945 under the administration of University College. Its collections cover the economic, social and municipal history of the city and surrounding area from the Mesolithic period onwards, with particular emphasis on Civic Regalia and the trades and crafts of the 19 th and 20 th centuries. Of special significance are the very fine collections of Silver, Glass and Youghal needlepoint Lace. Not only is the market famous for its food, it is also famous for its visit by Queen Elizabeth II in May Alternatively, visit Blackrock Castle south of. The 16 th century castle was originally built to defend the port and upper flows of Harbour. Today, it is the site of an observatory, visitors center, and restaurant. The Irish name of the town Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, meaning "Ferriter's townland is a Gaeltacht village in the County Kerry. It is in the west of the Corca (Dingle) peninsula and according to the 2002 census, about 75% of the town's population speak the Irish language on a daily basis. The village is named after the Norman-Irish Feiritéar family who settled in Ard na Caithne in the late medieval period and of whom the 17 th century poet and executed leader, Piaras Feiritéar, remains the most famous member. Designed by Englishman William Burges, the cathedral is built of limestone from, the interior consists of stone from Bath, and the walls are lined with red marble from the area. Enjoy the murals on the church ceilings, the stained glass windows, the 46 foot high Bishop s throne, the marble floors, the hand carved oak furnishings and the 1870 church organ consisting of an astonishing 3012 pipes. Alternatively, visit Collins Barracks Military Museum. Its purpose is to tell the history of the barracks, the history and traditions of the Defence Forces and the story of General Michael Collins. Its collection contains significant artefacts that are associated with key periods of this history includung a number of iconic military uniforms dating from the 1800 s right through to the present day. Travel time: approx. 1 hour 3:00 pm Tour Enjoy a private guided tour of Charles Fort, which is a classic example of a late 17 th century star-shaped fort. William Robinson, architect of the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham,, and Superintendent of Fortifications, is credited with designing the fort. As one of the largest military installations in the country, it has been associated with some of the most momentous events in Irish history. Walking time: approx. 15 minutes 1:30 pm Visit Enjoy a visit to the Butter Museum. This unique institution celebrates one of the great success stories of Ireland, the butter trade. The museum goes on to describe the internationally important Butter Exchange in 19 th century, the traditional craft of home butter making and the modern success of the Kerrygold brand. When it opened to the public in 1707 it was the first public library in Ireland. Unchanged for three centuries, this perfectly preserved library of the early Enlightenment, with its original oak bookcases, houses more than 25,000 rare and fascinating books. Originally built in the 13 th century, Castle functioned as a military fortress, a prison, treasury, courts of law and the seat of English Administration in Ireland for 700 years. 15 Day 26-28» Friday, June 12 - Sunday, June 14 afterwards Free weekend Enjoy a long free weekend in and explore the city further on your own. Alternatively, consider traveling to some nearby cities such as Drogheda to explore the Irish history on the Battle of the Boyne Site, the historic site where the rival claimants of the English, Scottish, and Irish thrones fought the famous battle in The Visitors Center and the adjacent yard with displays of cannon guns among others, will give you a detailed insight into the important historic battle. Or consider travelling to Kilkenny and visit for instance Kilkenny Castle. It was built in 1195 by William Marshal, 1 st Earl of Pembroke to control a fording-point of the River Nore and the junction of several routeways. The castle was a symbol of Norman occupation and in its original 13 th century condition it would have formed an important element of the defences of the town with four large circular corner towers and a massive ditch. Among others you will see the famous Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin, as well as the Long Room. Also known as College of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Queen Elizabeth, Trinity College is the sole constituent college of the University of in Ireland. Founded in 1592 as the "mother" of a new university, modeled after the collegiate universities of Oxford and Cambridge, but, unlike these, only one college was ever established. It is one of the seven ancient universities of the British Isles, as well as Ireland's oldest university. Located on College Green, opposite the former Irish Houses of Parliament, it occupies 190,000m². If the sun is shining, why not soak up some rays in St. Stephen s Green or take a stroll down to Aston Quay, one of the many Quay s. The Quay refers to the two roadways and quays that run along the north and south banks of the River Liffey in. They have played an important role in s history. You also may want to travel to the Glendalough Monastic site with its Round Tower. This early Christian ecclesiastical settlement was founded by St. Kevin in the 6 th century. Set in a glaciated valley with two lakes, the monastic remains include a superb round tower, stone churches and decorated crosses. Page 17

18 Another must-see while in the area is the Neolithic monument of Knowth, a Megalithic Passage Tomb built in about 3200 BC. This gem of the Brú na Bóinne complex was not discovered until 1967 and What makes Knowth really special is the amount of passage stones and kerbstones that feature rock art. In total 261 stones at Knowth are decorated, approximately 45% of the total of engraved megalithic stones in Ireland. Travel time: approx. 1 hour 3:15 pm Tour Enjoy a private guided tour of Malahide Castle and Gardens, one of the oldest castles in Ireland, set on 260 acres. This magnificent and historic 12 th century castle has been home to the Talbot family for over 800 years. Its great hall was built in the 15 th century, while the furniture, the reception rooms, the entry hallway, the corner towers and the plasterwork were all added in the 18 th century and reflect the highest standards of the time. Duration: approx. 45 minutes afterwards Free time Enjoy some free time to discover the castle grounds and gardens further on your own, or opt to spend some time in Malahide Village. Also known as the National Theatre of Ireland, it first opened its doors to the public in December Despite losing its original building to a fire in 1951, it has remained active to the present day. The Abbey was the first state-subsidized theater in the English-speaking world; from 1925 onwards it received an annual subsidy from the Irish Free State.
