Club members to compete in Vegas and Tulare shoots Best wishes to all club members competing in the Vegas Shoot Feb. 5-8 and the 46th U.S. National Indoor Championships in Tulare, Feb Among our Vegas Shoot members are Karen Williams, Ben Rogers, Jeanne Burke, Merlin Bunten, Debra Marks, and Sean Moore. According to the NFAA, The Vegas Shoot, known as the largest and most prestigious indoor archery tournament in the World, attracts novice to Olympic archers from around the Globe and includes 3-intense days of no error competition. BSA Venture Crew for archers age Young archers, male and female, ages 14-21, club members or not, are welcome to visit the crew shoot meetings currently being held the second and fourth Fridays at 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the indoor range. If you don't have your own gear, we have plenty of equipment to lend. To keep coming and go on outings with the crew, the new member cost is $25 for the year. The crew is planning an archery campout in July for the Mt. Madonna Bug Shoot. We will also be practicing for some of the SCA club shoots. Under age 14 youth may visit a crew shoot, with permission, but cannot join the crew until age 14. There will be two adult advisors/instructors present for all shoots and trips. For more information, contact Crew Advisor, Gabrielle Garrett, at gg4scouts@sbcglobal.net or (831) The coffee maker was recently left on, and cocoa powder was spilled on the table in the snack room. Please clean up after yourself at the range! Let s rideshare to area shoots Denise Barr I am interested in coordinating people who want to share rides to area shoots either for one day or longer. Fan ordered for indoor range Ian Garner I am excited to announce that our new Eco Fan (heat powered fan for the wood stove) is on its way. Estimated delivery is Feb. 17. This fan will automatically move the hot air from the stove throughout the indoor range as soon as the stove begins to heat up. No more waiting for an hour or more for the room to warm up! It's going to be great for those cold days. 2 scarchers@comcast.net

January Stump Shoot enjoyed by 15 archers Larry Yien, 2nd VP/Hunting Chair January 31st might be special to some, the eve of SuperBowl XLIX, but we all know January 31st marked the Santa Cruz Archer s first Stumpshoot of 2015! And epic it was, shooting over hill and dale, under trees, through brush many an archer tested their balance, flexibility, and nerves, all in hopes of executing a proper shot. If this type of roving doesn t sharpen an archer s skill, I fear nothing will. I will begin the recap with the simple fact that we all had a great time. Picture us all walking in the morning sun, each taking turns to choose the shot the group would take. Ted started us off in the longbow group with a long shot on a 3- D foam skunk. The longbowmen showed their prowess as most everyone scored on the smelly critter. The next 3 shots were on gophers; the last was an albino gopher. Again there were an amazing number of hits, and we made our amazed surprise very vocal! Special thanks to our president Andy S. for making and setting out the gophers and other 2 D critters. Larry Yien, David Knight, Khaya Knight, Ian Garner The day started off overcast, but by shoot time the sun was out and the day was a-warming. 15 archers came on board to rove the redwood clad trails. We often shoot in one group, but in the event we get more archers we split into groups. Today we found an even split with the longbows in one group and the recurves in the other. I was shooting primitive longbow and joined in with my brethren. David Knight, Khaya Knight By target 7 we were all neck and neck, with no clear leader in the pack. I believe it was the shot where we had to get low to the ground and send an arrow under a large fallen oak tree, which awoke a spirit in one archer in our group. Because even though he hit the bridge rather than the wood stake we were all aiming at, First Vice President Ian Garner started to pull away from the group after that target, and he took the lead for good. Many followed and chased Ian; David Knight, Dan Vermilyer, and even me with my bamboo osage longbow we were one hit short of tying Ian. Khaya Knight Khaya Knight 3 scarchers@comcast.net

The recurvers had a belly full of suspense although they were quieter than our longbow group. But in the end they had 3 archers all tied for first: Henry Bertram, Marty Vaden, and Jack O Neill. Since I was the shoot organizer I informed them that there would be a shoot-off. There were obstacles right, left, and overhead for these young lads to contest. One arrow would determine their fate. Henry shot and almost hit the bow rack. Marty cleared the foul obstacles but missed cleanly on the albino gopher. Jack drew back smooth on his vintage bow and struck the gopher square and low for a win. Club members attend area shoots Several club members attended the San Francisco Archer s Cabin Fever Shoot January 18 and the Diablo Bowmen s Winter Hunt Shoot January 25. Bob Leporini says, We had fun trying new places for their shoots. We met lots of nice people at Diablo: it was a beautiful place. It was our first time at these ranges. SC Archers members at The Cabin Fever shoot. Henry Bertram, Mark Hersey, Marty Vaden, Rick Prizes were awarded to all 1st place finishers: Ian G. 25 points longbow, Larry Y. 20 points primitive, and Jack O. 20 points recurve. Winning archers chose their prize from a myriad of handsome gifts. The Duracell 300 lumen flashlights were the popular winning prizes for the day. A big thanks to all who made it to the shoot. The next shoot will be the last Saturday of February, the 28 th ; we start at 9:00 a.m. We will shoot more gophers and fewer wooden stakes if all goes as planned. The Leporini boys at Cabin fever. These are some of our newest club members. 4 scarchers@comcast.net

Help plan our awards banquet! We are planning a club dinner and awards banquet in December. If you can help out, contact Gabrielle Garrett, at go2garrett@sbcglobal.net or (831) February meeting minutes Lynn Rollins 2/3/14 7:30 p.m. President s report (Andy Sterbenz) Thank you, officers, for all the work you ve done lately. 1 st Vice President s report (Ian Garner) 1. Indoor shoot is Friday 2/6, Outdoor shoot is Sunday 2/8. 2. Jan. 3 high scores are posted. Mark Hersey, Steve O Steen, and Ian Garner. 3. The first aid kit needs some supplies replenished. He will purchase the needed items. 4. A team shoot is in the works. Will report back at next month s meeting. He hopes newer members will join in. All styles will be included (longbow, recurve, compound). Larry Y. commented that he recently realized Compound shooters are people, too! 5. Is looking into NFAA handicap system. To get it, what people need to do is shoot at club shoots. 2 nd Vice President s report (Larry Yien) 1. Great stump shoot 1/ archers (3 guests, 13 members). Two groups: recurve and longbow. 3D animals and stakes. 3 way tie between Henry, Marty, and Jack. Jack prevailed. Prizes awarded. 2. Next stump shoot 2/28 9:00 a.m. 3. Submitted expenses to treasurer, mostly for prizes. 4. Scalps are in the works, will be available 2/28 at meetings and at shoots. Scalps are circular leatherettes for betting the archery version of poker chips. Purchase price $1. When you are out shooting, you might notice scalps hanging from an archer s quiver. Secretary s report (Steve Andrews) Absent. Treasurer s report (Susan Bertram) Club is solvent, membership renewals are generating income. Outdoor Range Captain s report (Mike Tracy and Steve Andrews) I picked up the trash on the outdoor range and took it to the dump. The arrow flight path caution sign on target two looks like it was run over. I would have put it back up, but it is pretty broken up, and I didn t have tools with me to fix it. Anyone who can fix it, please do. Indoor Range Captain s report (Jerry Granger and Cindee Damron) When I delivered snack supplies yesterday (Monday), I discovered the coffee maker had been left turned on (for who knows how long). I assume the same person who left the cocoa powder out and opened AND spilled it on the table between the frig and the microwave, left the coffee maker on while heating water for hot cocoa. Archers, please clean up after yourselves. Andy notes the rodents rebutted with the comment that they enjoy the sweets. Publicity Chair s report (Gabrielle Garrett) 1. Updated the club activity flier. This flier is always available on the counter in the indoor range. 2. SCA logo patches, decals, mugs, caps, and shirts are available. Will soon be moving all items to the new archery shop in Scotts Valley 3. Bulls Eye Archery is opening in Scotts Valley next month! Operated by club members Larry Spittler and Jeanne Burke, the shop is located on 5299E Scotts Valley Drive near The Animal House Pet Shop and will be open 12:00-7:00 T-Sat. It will carry PSE and Bear equipment, and 50% of the store is consignment items. This is a great resource, and now we don t have to travel hours to get gear! Stop by the shop to see the announcement board and get advice on gear. Support our local archery shop! 3. Club members will attend two major upcoming shoots: the Vegas Shoot Feb. 5-8 and the 46th U.S. National Indoor Championships in Tulare, Feb Novelty Chair s report (Henry Bertram) See the flier for the Feb. 14 novelty shoot. Prizes will be awarded in raffle format. 6 scarchers@comcast.net

Membership Chair and Newsletter Editor s report (Lynn Rollins) 100 members, most of them renewals. January newsletter is on the web site. Submit articles for Feb. newsletter by this Saturday 2/7. Key Master s report (Erick Sturm) 80 card keys have been handed out, and a handful of people have requested their card be mailed. A minor glitch with the door has been fixed. Old keys have been collected. Might rekey some doors as needed for keymaster access. Club members can get their keys at meetings or by contacting us on the website. Web Master s report (Alex Viera) Absent. Old business 1. Indoor range door lock. Already covered by Keymaster. 2. Indoor Bow Rack: One more is being built, then both will go to the shop for powder coating. 3. Outdoor lighting update: Mike T. is absent, so will table this until next month. 4. Water Main update: Jack M. sez water is working at the range door! He ran a hose from the parking are to the corner of the building. Hose is currently left on, but general consensus was that many people have had their own bad experiences with this, so water will be turned off except on weekends. If anyone notices a leak, contact Jack (send a pigeon). When asked about the pipe that runs along the road, Jack reported that it is partially exposed and several types of pipe are involved. It has had various repairs over the years. 5. Club dinner? This was suggested last month and met with a lot of enthusiasm. Now to plan it. When and where? Who will plan it? Gabrielle G. proposes December. Some suggest rolling the club meeting into the dinner. An awards banquet could give us a chance to recognize club members who have earned awards. Gabrielle will lead the committee. Susan B. will join. Thank you. 6. When to hold another after-dark shoot? New moon on March 20. How about Saturday March 21? Yes that is a good day. We had one last year, and Gabrielle said the hardest part was that it was cold. Gabrielle waited for someone else to take charge but alas, she is now planning it. She needs help! Ideas are luminocks (bring lots!), glow in the dark feathers, flashlights on targets (flood light under each), black lights, chem light necklaces, pot luck. Contact Gabrielle to help plan it: go2garrett@sbcglobal.net or (831) New business 1. Need to start planning the In The Redwoods shoots. They are June 6-7. Steve H. will cook Saturday, Erick S. Sunday. Gabrielle will do publicity, will put a full page ad in the CBH newsletter April & May ($165/month). Tyson S. moves, Erick S. seconds to allocate $400 for publicity. Unanimous yes, 1 abstain. Who will run the raffle (Robin will run one raffle per year)? Should we have a swap meet? These details tabled until next month. As a refresher: Stickbow in the Redwoods, Saturday June 6 (recurves and longbows, no sights) 3D in the Redwoods, Sunday June 7 (any archery style) 2. Several targets need repairs or were recently repaired. #1 needs a new roof; it is growing mushrooms. Someone will call Matt R. and ask if he can do it. #11 needs to be strapped down. #7 s eucalyptus was recently trimmed. The wood needs to be bucked up split into pieces someone will call Rick C, who has a splitter. #22 had some recent trail work by an anonymous volunteer. Nice work, but over-enthusiastic: the changes will cause erosion. We appreciate work done on the range, but we must be careful about erosion. We need to redo it. #28 was recently excavated by an anonymous volunteer. Nice work, greatly improved thanks! 3. Dan V. requests that the club keep some flu-flus on hand for shooting at milk jugs. We can make them from unclaimed arrows. Dan moves, Gabrielle seconds, to budget $150 for arrows and fletching to make up flu-flus. Passed, 2 abstained. 4. Ian G. asks, can we shoot in the field by the clubhouse? No. Environmentally sensitive area. However, Steve W. is asking the city if we can use that area for Kyudo (the Japanese martial art of archery) once a month. 5. John M. sez he s finding trash around the range and not enough buckets. This ignited a long discussion about buckets, signs, plastic bags, and slobs. Members: when walking the range, please pick up trash. 6. Larry Y. asked about parking in the picnic area. In past years, that area had enough room for a couple vehicles, and folks parked there when setting up shoots. Can we move some picnic tables to make room for parking? Well, OK. Move some picnic tables to make room for parking, but park only when necessary, for example, when setting up shoots, and be careful when the ground is wet so as not to damage the area or create erosion. 7. Someone asked about the status of the ATV repair. Not repaired. Tyson will take it to Steve Hill s shop for repairs. 7 scarchers@comcast.net

8. New youth member Cody L. requests that boards in youth category are updated. Ian G. will bring up at next meeting. 9. Ian G. proposes that we get an EcoFan for the wood stove to distribute the heat. It will be powered by the stove. Ian moves we budget $150 for the fan. Marty seconds. Most for, 1 opposed, 2 abstain.
