3 Program Notes Christmas Party The regular nightly meeting of the second Tuesday in December was our annual Christmas Party. The pot luck dinner insured an abundance and variety of food dishes - no one leaves one of our dinners wanting for more. Why Larry Spray is intently watching the photographer is a little mystery - although the deserts were at this end of the table. In addition to the 30 or so members, family and friends we had a visitor from Texas. Peter Elias, editor of the Mid-Cities Stamp Club Newsletter Stamping Around was traveling in the NW on business and dropped in to celebrate with us. He is in the center of the picture below. Bill Seymour and Paul Malan at left are patiently awaiting the raffle of some very nice prizes. Julie Kumler looks like she is computing her chance of winning a prize - or maybe not. Caroline B r a n d t with the assistance of several o t h e r members, p l a n n e d and decorated the clubhouse for the party. She also MC d the raffle of a variety of very nice prizes. Here we are waiting for the first number to be drawn. This year we added two new activities to the festivities. The side room was set up with 12 exhibit frames with displays of French Colony stamps, US revenue stamp collections to be in the annual auction and Battleship Oregon Post Cards. Paul Malan showed a number of slides from his hikes near Mt. St. Helens, to finish the evenings activities. PAGE 4 February 2012 PAGE 5

5 Cover of The Month Round-The-World Flights of Amelia Earhart Part IV by Eric Hummel At the end of Part III of this series, the Battleship USS Colorado rendezvoused with the three destroyers of the Aircraft Carrier USS Lexington Group which would continue the search for Amelia Earhart. It was no small endeavor to get this task force to the Central Pacific in a short time. After the inability of getting a PBY to the search area, it was decided a more extensive search than that of the USS Colorado, USS Swan and Itasca would require an Aircraft Carrier. But, all four of the Navy s Aircraft Carriers were based in San Diego. RPPC - Dramatic image of the USS Drayton steaming at full speed. Perkins and the Cushing were enroute to San Pedro from Bremerton. The Lexington was at Santa Barbara - it sailed and reached San Pedro by 11 PM, then onto San Diego the following morning by 11 AM. The Lamson was fully manned at Ready Duty. The crew of the Drayton had to be recalled. Many of the crew could not be located - some men were transferred from other commands, but still it would sail short 40 hands. By 7 PM on the fourth, the USS Lexington had taken on board 62 planes, 63 officers and 311 men from the North Island Naval Air Station (San Diego) and had met up with the Drayton, Lamson and Cushing 10 miles south of San Clemente Island. The destroyers Walter Crosby raised print photo cachet cover postmarked from the USS Lexington on July 4th - the Lexington Search Group sets course from San Diego. On July 3rd the Navy Dept. detailed the Carrier Lexington and destroyers Drayton, Lamson, Perkins and Cushing to search for the missing flyers. The Lexington Group was formed under the command of Captain J. S. Dowell, Commander, Destroyer Squadron Two. 6 Amelia Earhart Part III - Continued USS Chandler and USS Southard had acted as plane guards during the transfer of planes - and then were released from any further involvement. The USS Perkins developed engine trouble and had to return to San Diego for repairs, thus ending its involvement in the mission. RPPC of the USS Lexington in the Hawaiian Islands. Note the large number of planes on the decks. 10,600 gallons of aviation gasoline and spare aircraft engine parts from the Seaplane Tender USS Avocet. While at Pearl, 41 crew men were temporarily assigned to the Drayton to makeup for the ship July 4th cover from the USS Perkins on the day it was to Join the Lexington Group south of San Clemente Island. The Perkins and the USS Cushing had been ordered to make 28 knots to join the group, but this ship developed engine trouble and was forced to return to San Pedro. This is a Henry Stinemetts cover (good friend of Walter Crosby), signed by him and with his distinctive paste-on cachet elements. Once formed, the Lexington Group headed for Hawaii at 23 knots for refueling and provisioning. While enroute, it was determined there were inadequate facilities to quickly refuel the ships. The Carrier could not enter Pearl Harbor because it was too shallow. The Oiler USS Ramapo which was on its way to Guam, was directed to return to Hawaii to fuel the Lexington. When the ships arrived on July 8th, the destroyers refueled at Pearl Harbor and the USS Lexington went to the Lahaina Roads to await the USS Ramapo. The destroyers took on more than gallons of fuel each plus seven tons of provisions which would be transferred to the Lexington. The Lexington took on Interesting cover with postmark of VB Squadron 3B on the first day of search flights from the USS Lexington. The raised print photo cachet by Walter Crosby would have been added after the Carrier had returned to San Diego. PAGE 10 February 2012 PAGE 11

7 Amelia Earhart Part III - Continued sailing short handed from San Diego. The Ramapo arrived in the early morning of the 9th and began transferring 900,000 gallons of fuel to the Lexington. The Lexington Group, refueled and provisioned left Hawaii for the search area at about 3 PM on the 9th. During the short time in Hawaii there were several meetings to determine a search strategy. Upon leaving Lahaina Roads the destroyers headed for a rendezvous with the Battleship USS Colorado. They would be refueled by that ship and then go to positions within the search area north and west of Howland Island. The destroyers would act as plane guards for the planes searching the area from the USS Lexington. On July 11th the Commander of the Lexington Group was given command over all units involved in the search for the Flyers. The USS Swan and the Itasca were detailed to search all of the Gilbert Islands - at the western edge of designated search area. On July 12th the destroyers were refueled by the USS Colorado which was then released from the search group to resume its NROTC cruise back to San Francisco via Hawaii. The Lexington reached the search area on Cover postmarked from the USS Lamson on the day the destroyers from the Lexington Group arrived in Honolulu on their way to California after having completed their search for Earhart and Noonan. the 13th. From the 13th to the 18th the Lexington launched two search flights each day, utilizing 40 to 60 planes each time. The aerial search covered over 150,000 square miles. The four ships covered another 22,000 square miles when the planes were not flying. On July 16th the USS Swan and the Itasca, having concluded an unsuccessful search of the Gilbert Islands, were released from further search duties and ordered to return to Hawaii. The search for the flyers was completed on July 18th. The four ships set course for the US. On the 21st the Commander of Destroyer Squadron Two transferred his flag from the Lexington to the Lamson, thusly terminating the Lexington Group. The destroyers stopped in Hawaii for refueling (July 23rd) before returning to California. The Lexington went straight back to San Diego, arriving on the 30th. July cover from the Plane Guard destroyer USS Cushing KB: EARHART SEARCH. The raised print Walter Crosby cachet would have been added after the ship returned to California. From July 2nd to the 18th, the search for Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan encompassed an area of over 262,000 square miles. Thirteen US Navy and Coast Guard ships and support vessels plus 67 amphibious and Carrier based planes had taken part in the largest Naval search effort. No sign nor any evidence of the Earhart plane was discovered, Capt. J. S. Dowell, Commander, Destroyer Squadron Two. PAGE 12 February 2012 PAGE 13
