3 April 2010 Issue XLVI (46) Edition 10 President s Column article by Ron Kellogg Designated dirt roads and trails in the Eldorado National Forest will reopen to motorized use on April 1, ending the wet weather seasonal closure that began on January 1, announced Forest Supervisor Ramiro Villalvazo. That s good news, as I set here listening to the rain on my roof, most of these routes are dry enough to be reopened by April 1. Visitors who drive on routes that are too wet and cause resource damage, however, may receive citations. That means they really aren t open if still wet, In the future, decisions about allowing the seasonal closure to end, will be influenced by the evidence of how well the wet or soft soils have been recognized and respected, said Villalvazo. Okay, now we are going to be held responsible for making the right choice before we hit the trail, but now if anyone is not as responsible as STH members we will risk more closures. Higher elevations of the National Forest are still covered with snow and the roads won t be passable until the snow melts. Villalvazo says that most of the designated routes in the higher elevations have soils that dry out faster than clay soils and are less susceptible to damage. I ask that you be cautious about decisions to drive in areas that still have snow on or near the road. I m sure glad they announced the reopening of designated dirt roads and trails, free maps of roads open to motorized vehicle travel are available at all Eldorado National Forest Service Office, be careful out there! I mentioned last month that the applications for grants are available for review and comment by the public until April 5 th at: id=1164 Be sure to attend our STH club meeting on April 1 st, dues are due and it s election time again, I encourage all club members to consider volunteering for one of the Board positions, it s a great way to get involved, and ensure that our Club will continue to be one of the premier Clubs in the Association. 4 Three Hoe s and a Emu Title by: Troy Holmes Article by: Rich Currie Well, I had a great time!! And, I think all the participants did too. Anza Borrego Park is like Disneyland to guys like me. Awesome views, amazing earth art, totally cool trails of various styles of challenge. Plush soft sandy washes, to bolder strewn mountain passes, to deepwater crossings. To the average grocery getter this place is ideal for its intimidating passages. Four full days of driving and three perfect evenings in the desert. Originally we were to have a six vehicle run, but unfortunately two had to bow out at the last minute. Although, we did meet Will and Des, as planned, at the Arroyo Salado Campground in Anza Borrego for a short period. They toured the desert a week prior, and it was time for them to return home, leaving the Three Hoe s and the Emu.

But, it was a long day of highway driving, with some great challenges for our pavement pounders.

We had four full days and my plan was to never set up camp and make dinner in the dark. We barely made it to the first camp with just enough light to accomplish just that. But, it was a long day of highway driving, with some great challenges for our pavement pounders. Once we got to the park, met Will and Des, arrived at the first trail, we had to weed our way through all the flower lovers and tourists. After about three miles in we approached the first real head scratcher, the deepwater crossing. No other way but this way. Sure there was a sign indicating soft mud and possibly a vehicle trap. I plunged through without concern knowing my pals would rescue me if need be. No problem, just looks scary.rookie filter #1. Then the trail immediately took a steep upward climb atop a pretty gnarly rocky path. Rookie filter #2. This was a great challenge for all of us. Some of us had lifts. Some did not. Some of us had armor. Some did not. Some of us had a magic button. Some did not. Some of us had tough trail tires and some did not. One had none of the above, but all the drivers had years of experience in stuff a lot worse than this. So, this made it really fun. We all made it to the top without a scrape.

Since I had a lot planned and a lot to see and do, we broke camp and were on our way by 9:30.

Friday day two, we were headed to the park headquarters visitor center in the town of Borrego Springs.

Camp was found, dinner and fire made just in the nick of time. It became a windy night. Just ask Troy. Started in the tent and ending up in the truck. Tina and I heard the sand blasting against the tent all night. Luckily morning was calm with a tiny breeze. Since I had a lot planned and a lot to see and do, we broke camp and were on our way by 9:30. Not bad for the first morning with our not so usual vehicles. Friday day two, we were headed to the park headquarters visitor center in the town of Borrego Springs. We had to backtrack the trail. Down the rocky hill, across the deepwater, past the flower lovers and back to the pavement. Along the roadside we stopped to take pictures of the metal works of art. At the park headquarters we enjoy a tasty tailgate lunch and a quick run through the visitor center. Everyone and their uncle were there.

This trail winds it way through steep walled canyons for miles. Each bend a new amazing photo op. I insisted we run through as quickly as possible to hopefully be first to our second campsite at the end of Sandstone Canyon. Sandstone Canyon branches off of Fish Creek a few miles in. To our success camp was open for our use. Huge towering wall surrounds this spot. Crumbling in places could make one wonder if this was safe or not. This was the end of the vehicle trial. Footpath continued on which none of us saw the end. Camp was very peaceful with an occasional visitor seeking the end as well. We arrived very early I think around four thirty or so. This allowed us to make camp and take in the awesome wonders of the earth as it erodes and creates at the same time. Plenty of sunlight allowed us to prepare our evening together. Ample firewood was carried in giving us perfect hot fires to sit and chat by. A few late night stories and one by one we hit the sack. Morning as usual came quick. Quietly still with not a sound except for an airline or two above. Breakfast and packed by 9:00. Gettin better!!

No rush, stop whenever, enjoy what this place has to offer. Slowly we backtracked out of Sandstone Canyon stopping almost at every bend. Staring upwards at the smooth carved canyon walls. Wondering what it takes to create such awesome terrain. Troy stopped to take a picture of a huge lizard like creature. Took a lot of pictures where the walls closed in to a single vehicles width. After popping out of Sandstone Canyon I was on to our next adventure to Broken Shaft Gulch. BSG was another canyon branching off Fish Creek. This path was read to be rough. Pictures I saw earlier showed large rocks and tight turns through the canyon. The literature indicated this trail to be driven in the opposite direction the downhill direction. I wanted to take this route to the other side of the park without hitting the pavement again. I knew what lied ahead. Upward sandy twisted pothole climb out to the surface. Again, another great challenge for the softer vehicles. All made it out without a blemish. Once on top we were greeted to many on lookers. Some were surprised how flawless we made it looked in such stockish vehicles. After clean our fingernails on our shoulders we took to the Del Diablo Canyon for the passage out to the Carrizo Marsh where lunch would be. Another amazing canyon to drive. Huge towering walls and countless tight bends and turns. The canyon deposits onto a large wash with a series of other canyons. This leads to the marsh. The marsh lunch was well deserved. We took the trail to the old staging outpost (complete ruins nothing really to see). From there we backtracked through the marsh and along the Vallecito wash to Highway S-2. I had a couple of choices to camp but none panned out. I relinquished the lead to follow Matt to our last evening in the park. He took us out to Dos Cabezas Campground near the Jacumba Mountains. Another remote sector nestled against a bolder strewn mountain range. The morning would bring us to pack it up one last time to head home. A very scenic trail was taken to the town of Ocotillo on highway 8. After replenishing the air in our tires we all took to the freeway to head back north. Thank you all for attending my run to Anza Borrego.

10 Shower Anyone article by: Kathy Medley Hey All, we are part of one of the coolest groups I tell you. On Saturday we were on our way to help Tina and Rich celebrate their pending additions to the family when of course in trying to navigate to meet Leona at the Kerseys, the main street was closed for something so Sharon Hedges, Merci & I wonder around West Sacramento because I channeled my husband and refused to call for directions. After wondering for about 20 minutes we end up at the same main street that we can now pass through. Thanks to Sharon s great direction & map reading ability we finally got to Rick & Shannon s a mere 30 minutes late. Shannon informed us that Leona had decided to go on her own. I think the oven was running a little slow. (Those are the best Snicker doodles!!) So off we went with Shannon directing from the back seat.

11 Shower Anyone article by: Kathy Medley (cont) Once at the house the party started it was a great time. It was nice to meet all the different family members and other friends. Merci ran wild checking out all the animals. We played a suspicious game of bingo, I am not sure why but they kept referring to Shannon & Des?? Something about being competitive but I was other wise occupied. I had a great time visiting with everyone, as we all started to head to the vehicles to head home Tina & Amy were introducing the animals to Merci and the next thing I knew I was getting a leg up from Amy and off we went for a different kind of wheeling. Merci then decided she needed to ride each one, including Big Joe. It was awesome, although Dad is now in for a world of hurt because Merci now wants Big Joe to live at her house, not sure I have the room. A great time was had by all.

Who wouldn't want to be recognized for gettin' their groove on? Be assured, I do plan to pass them on to deserving "winners". No storage available at my house! Dates and locations: We discussed 4 possible options for the picnic location: Stoneyford, Hollister, Forest City and Lake Mendocino.
