Message From the President (Bob /Andy) Anderson President MMGG Message from the President Following an expensive investigation involving a team of scientists of the neighborhood here in Stillwater I have come to the conclusion that there is no rush in getting my MGs ready for spring. There are signs of contradictions to this conclusion; such as the guy in front of me at Menards buying not 1 but 2 lawnmower blades. I was there buying 100 pounds of ice melt. One of us is a pessimist the other an optimist. And speaking of being an optimist, since I am again writing before an upcoming event, the Annual Holiday Party. I know the party was a Grand Success. I was cautioned by a couple MMGG Board members at the January Board meeting to keep my welcoming speech to a minimum. I hope I was not escorted off the podium under protest. Hopefully I was able to at the least conduct a brief vote to make our new Secretary and Treasurer official. I am quite relaxed now compared to a month or two ago when the prospects of filling these two positions appeared rather dim. We are now in capable and experienced hands for both positions. Please welcome and thank Elena Biessener (Secretary) and Steve Greenway (Treasurer) for taking on these Board positions. And next up for showing our support and thanks goes to June Moerke, for stepping forward at the January Board meeting to organize the upcoming Spring Kick-off in March. Dawn and Elena have also offered to assist June. With these 3 involved we know it will be a success. Which also means we have about 4-5 weeks to actually get our MGs ready if we wish to drive to the Spring Kick-off. I have been keeping my driveway clear full-width, just in case I need to drive off for such a gathering, provided the roads are salt free. I sure hope the battery maintainers are doing their job. Is there anyone else a tad nervous about how well their antifreeze is protecting their cars this winter? I know I am a tad nervous after watching the thermometer drop to 20 below 0 in my unattached, unheated garage. That s 50 degrees below the freezing temperature for water. I think the mice even left for a warmer location. It is times like this that make me wonder why we live here. But the clear blue skies are so beautiful during those times, makes one almost feel like smiling, if the cracking skin didn t hurt so much. Keeping warm and staying inside until spring. Bob (Andy) Anderson President MMGG And hopefully we have all thanked the Petroffs and Bergquists for their years of being our past Treasurer and Secretary. Page 3

Message From the Vice President: Dawn Williams MMGG (Madam Vice) I hope that everyone who went to the Holiday party had a good time. There was a good turnout and we enjoyed a wonderful buffet dinner, some great door prizes and swinging dance music by Tami and the Bachelor (who, by the way, are MG club members). The decorated birdhouses were made by the MG Girls and I am delighted to say that this year I got one to put on my deck. The staff at the Lost Spur was great to work with and I think that the location and the room worked out well for our event. My thanks to Dick and Val Wallrich for everything they did. I truly appreciated working with them. By the time you are all reading this Gazette we would have already been to the Petroff s for their Bonnet and Boot Pub party on February 1. I hope we have a good turnout for this event. It is so nice to have the opportunity to get together with our MG friends during this long cold winter. Thanks to Joan and John for hosting. During the Holiday party June and Tom Moerke talked with me about the Spring Kick off that is scheduled for March. They have agreed to host this annual event and there is a flyer to be found with more information about this gathering in this Gazette. The date is March 22 and the location is Joseph s Grill on Wabasha in St. Paul. Reservations and arrangements have been made by the Moerke s and the cost per person is $15.00 which includes brunch, tax and gratuity. We will start out with the Meet and Greet at 9am and then brunch will be served at 10am. This is an event you won t want to miss. Our hosts need an advance count so please send your registration with your check to the Moerke s. This is a great way to start the driving season of Let s hope for an early Spring so we can get our cars out and have a parking lot full of English Sports Cars for this event. Thanks to Tom and June for being our hosts. Our calendar has some rides, parties, picnics and trips scheduled but we are still looking for hosts. There are some events that are scheduled but we always are looking for more. There are three club members who are working on scheduling some tech sessions. Randy Byboth, Bruce Anderson and Steve Nichols are planning some events and I for one am looking forward to seeing what they come up with this year. I am sure it will include some interesting topics. Make sure you check out the updated 2014 Calendar of Events in this Gazette and add these sessions to your own MG calendar. The MG Girls have been busy. Every month we try to get together for lunch at different and interesting restaurants and also have book club potlucks. On January 26 we are going to the Russian Museum where our own Wendy Sott is a docent. Our book club meets on Sunday afternoons and we welcome any MG Girl to join us. The current book and our meeting dates are always in the Gazette so check it out and join us even if you don t read the book. In February, there are seven MG Girls who are going to Isla Mujeres, Mexico to visit me at my house on the island. I hope we have pictures for you in the March Gazette. We will have a great time soaking in sun and swimming in the beautiful ocean and are all looking forward to getting out of this harsh Minnesota winter. By the time we all get home, Spring will almost be here. On a personal note: Over the New Year s holiday, I went to Little Rock, Arkansas to see my daughter Heidi, her husband and their three children from Russian. My daughter has just completed her chemotherapy and radiation treatments for breast cancer and is doing well. Page 4

The 3 kids are growing up fast and doing well in school and love their new home. They moved from Washington DC last June. Grandma Dawn introduced the kids to the Twilight series and we all power watched the vampire movies while I was there. Had a great time. I hope you are all doing well and looking forward as I am, to spring and warm weather. Take Care, Dawn Notes from the Editor: Diane Rindt Editor MMGG Gazette Here I sit staring at the screen, another month has gone by and it s time for me to write my column. This is the last thing I do before I send out the newsletter to be proofed by Elena Biessener. She so graciously has volunteered to help me out. Part of last year Barb Belongia was doing the proofing. Then after Brit Fest Elena started doing the job. I really appreciate the help these gals have provided because unfortunately I make mistakes, I skim over the text and see what I mean instead of what s really there. (Yikes!) So I d like to put credit where credit is do and thank my current proofreader Elena for proofing the Gazette before it goes out to the club. As you may remember Steve and I enjoy going snow machine riding in the winter. This year we certainly have had enough snow but the cold temperatures have kept us from heading out on any long adventures. Maybe after this week things will settle down and we ll have temperatures above zero. Hey, I m not asking for too much. just above zero to keep us from freezing and below 30 to keep the snow from melting. As Andy and Dawn have mentioned in their columns we look to have a fun filled driving season in It would be great to know who in the club plans to attend which events. A real easy way to do just that would be to use Facebook. I know many of the Minnesota MG members are already doing just that on the Minnesota MG Group Facebook and the InterMarque Facebook sites. It s easy to create an event and send out invitations. The more people interact the more fun. I have set up a Facebook page for Rally in the Valley. If you have a Facebook account be sure to check it out and join the group. When you do a search type Car Event, Rally in the Valley In this issue you will find part two of the 2013 Scavenger Hunt by Jim Gevay. It looks like Jim really enjoyed himself going to the various landmarks in Minnesota and it s nice of him to share the details with us. MMGG member Ian Holmes put together the event and Jim was the only person in the club to participate. After reading what Jim found I m guessing there are members that are thinking, We should have done that! Thanks Jim for writing your articles. The first gathering in February is at John and Joan Petroff s. It looks to be a grand time, so please see page 20 for the details. Unfortunately Steve and I won t be able to attend for we will be helping out with our grandchildren that weekend. My daughter inlaw will be busy at Ft. McCoy on a Drill weekend. We ll miss out on the fun but look forward to seeing everyone in March at the Kick off Brunch. Until then, try to stay warm and hope the groundhog doesn t see his shadow on Groundhog s Day! Diane Page 5

Minutes from the Secretary: Elena Biessener MMGG Secretary Dawn agreed to work with her. Tom Moerke advised that the Triumph Club will be hosting Rendezvous there was little interest in our club hosting Rendezvous. Dawn agreed to represent us at the next Intermarque meeting at the Square Peg and at all future meetings. MG Executive Board Meeting January 13, 2014 Meeting was adjourned at 7:15 p.m. Attending: Andy Anderson, Dawn Williams, Tom and June Moerke, Dick Wallrich, John and Joan Petroff, Bob and Lori Jensen, Elena Biessener and Steve Greenway. The meeting was called to order by Andy. He indicated that he would take a few minutes at the upcoming Holiday Party to have the members officially vote for Elena Biessener and Steve Greenway to take over the positions of Secretary and Treasurer. The Treasurer's material has been successfully transferred from the Petroff s to Steve, but the Secretary's materials have not yet been transferred. Andy will check with Bonnie to have her pass on the files to Elena. Andy will also follow up on filing a Form 990 with the State. Bob Jensen mentioned that the website incorrectly identifies Elena as the Treasurer. Elena sent a note to Diane Rindt to have this corrected. We discussed the Holiday Party. It was noted by Dick Wallrich that many members are retired and leave for warmer climates and are not around for the holiday party. We had 80 last year and will only have 65 this year. We may consider having the party in November or early December next year. Dick Wallrich proposed that we meet a group of MGs in Grand Forks and escort them to Duluth - they will be crossing Minnesota on their way to Canada. The dates are July The MG Girl Corner MG Girl Lunch Date: March 3rd Time: 1:00 p.m. Location: The Mill North East Address: 1851 Central Ave. NE, MPLS, MN Website for the Mill: Please RSVP to Elena Biessener elen2b0916@comcast.net. June has agreed to host the kickoff party. She is considering Joseph's in St. Paul. Elena and Page 6

From the Garage by Dave Braun Spare parts are both easy and difficult to find for our cars. Easy, because as one of the most popular makes of sport cars in the world, there are many vendors supplying replacement parts, and many distributors are warehousing, cataloging and shipping those parts. Difficult, because some parts are of low demand, or the tooling for the parts are nonexistent, and so these parts are almost unobtainable. Restoration and repair requires parts to repair parts, replacement parts, and acceptable alternatives. Paying the right price and installing almost correct parts can be a challenge. Finally, spares can be of dubious quality, so knowing what you are getting is important. When I started in the hobby, the MG Company was selling cars and spares under the guise of British Leyland. Leyland Motors had purchased Standard-Triumph and then merged with the British Motor Corporation (the owners of Austin, Morris, MG and other makes). You could go to Hansord Pontiac in Minneapolis or Young Motors in Saint Paul and look at Jaguar, Triumph and yes, MGs in one show room. In the back of those showrooms were service departments where you could get original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts, in boxes with the Girling, Lucas, BL or left over BMC logos on them. Today, such parts are called New Old Stock (NOS) meaning that they are new (never used) parts, but of old stock and in theory were every bit as good as what was on the car new. Not that every spare part was as good, or even perfectly fitting, during this period as suppliers changed and OEMs looked for universal replacements. A used clutch master cylinder and a New Old Stock (NOS) repair kit ready for assembly. Certainly, finding parts at the dealer for my MG TD was not possible, unless it was a universal joint (the same Hardy Spicer units used on the last MGB would fit a T-Series) or some other common part. MG TD parts were available by mail or phone order from a company in Goleta, California, named Moss Motors. Their catalog was a thing of beauty, and many a TC, TD and TF were assembled using their parts breakdown as a guide. They provided reprinted Workshop Manuals, and also clever accessories for our cars from the MG Mitten car cover to nifty helmets and goggles. Abingdon Spares in Walpole, New Hampshire was the go-to source on the east coast for the same range of cars; while Victoria British Ltd., a division of the Long Motor Corporation out of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, was supplying the later MGB and MG Midget models. These two companies had catalogs too, and one thing all three catalogs had in common was their separate price lists. Distributors had their own price list which was somewhat lower and allowed them a margin on the parts. You had to have pretty good eyes, a sharp pencil and a piece of paper, to create your needs list, get the pricing, and place your order with your personal check. In any case, a steel ruler helped align the prices with the part numbers. Most of our club members can remember when there wasn t an Internet, and an 800 number was the way one communicated long distance to buy parts. We would also scour Hemmings, Page 8

Old Car Weekly, and Road & Track for vehicles, supplies, and parts and accessories. Letters were the method used when you wanted to make sure your order was crystal clear. Later, I can remember teaching people how to create facsimile lead sheets in order to transmit copies of papers across the country. Facsimile eventually got shortened to FAX and then gave way to on-line ordering. The internet has served a few other purposes too, it has made it much easier to share information with other enthusiasts; reduce your personal stockpile of parts by offering them to people who seemed to need them more; and has given rise to photosites (with an assist from digital cameras) that chronicles many car restoration projects. Some of these blogs are better than others, and all are based on opinions. We usually decide for ourselves who to trust and where to get our information, after a few mistakes and do-overs from listening to the wrong people or sometimes interpreting things incorrectly. Sharing information on the internet is one of the best ways to find a potential supplier. Finding Trusted Local Suppliers Sometimes you just want to handle the part or pre-fit it in an assembly to make sure you have the right component. In the Twin Cities, we are fortunate to have a very large resource in Quality Coaches. With knowledgeable technicians and an impressive array of used, hard to find parts, a phone call to Quality is usually a good place to start when looking for a spare. Their used prices are usually calculated as half of the Moss Motors retail price, and since they are a pretty large dealer for Moss, you can make a deal or two for your project if you are ordering several expensive items at once. Quality is also familiar with many of the specialty vendors in the cities, and will send you to Paul Williams Tire to get your wire wheels properly mounted and balanced, or Brake & Equipment Warehouse to have brake parts custom made and repaired, including resleeving cylinders and arcing brake linings to match the machined drums. They also offer bench services on parts that require special tooling or processes and are eager to help you get your MG back on the road. I ve sourced used suspension and engine parts, bought full interiors, and had them help me with special process such as king pin reaming among other tasks and parts. In return, I have sometimes given them parts I no longer had a use for which they in turn have provided to someone to keep a car intact, from suspension parts to half an interior or two. After Maggie s ignition circuit short, the tachometer needed parts for cleaning out the smoke released inside. Picking through a local used parts recycler like Quality Coaches is a great way to find the replacement parts. Another place to get ideas for sources and parts are our club activities. A well placed question will usually direct you to someone who has been there before and is more than happy to share their sources. The unobtainable recessed grille finisher strip for Maggie, the 1970 MGB Wire Wheel Conversion That Turned Into a Restoration came from just such a conversation. Another time, being completely flummoxed regarding the needle bearings holding a layshaft in position led me to a friend who had a complete kit of spare gearbox parts, and was willing to share some of the parts he had collected over the years. And I first used APT Instruments in Bloomington (Minnesota) based on a recommendation from a friend. Purchasing from the Big Boys Getting back to those major retailers, Moss; Abingdon Spares and Vicky Brit after perusing their catalogs on-line, it is relatively easy to place an order. A credit card is the only thing that is really needed, plus a mailing add- Page 9

ress that UPS can find. But did you know that most of the orders come into Moss by phone? This brings up a nice side feature of phoning in your order. A lot of times, the trained order taker at the other end of the line is an enthusiast themselves. They are armed with the same computer information you have, plus some extra sites and information Moss makes available to them. Phoning makes it easy to ask specific questions regarding the suitability of the parts. I once ordered a muffler for another make of British car, unaware that with the advent of the large rear bumper over riders, the alignment of the muffler with the rear of the car had changed. The customer service representative asked a couple of pertinent questions, certainly saving me the cost of returning a bulky part that I had selected, and would not have fit! It is also worthwhile to check another source if one of the sources doesn t have the part you are looking for. I ve worked with Moss UK as they have a different selection of parts and a different philosophy in some respects from their American cousins. As mentioned earlier, several shops like Quality Coaches are Moss distributors and pass savings to the end user. Little British Car Company has raised this level of service to a new height, dealing exclusively with both Moss and other hard to find parts, at discounted prices. You do have to be careful because you are one step removed from the source, and mistakes can happen. LBC once shipped me two kingpin kits, where one will do the job on an entire car. It was a simple matter of the stock picker not being aware of this, and of course I shipped the extra parts back. Small, Specialty Vendors If you are willing to ship from overseas, it has never been easier to check availability with vendors in the UK. They are experienced in handling the customs forms and often have US Dollar and British Pound exchange information built into their sites. I have gone overseas for interiors, electrical bits and full custom wiring harnesses, taps and dies, and other items. In addition, From the Frame Up in Mesa, Arizona, is a fantastic MG TC specialist which is expanding their offerings into other MGs, especially when they overlap with the TC. Their parts are often custom sourced, and of very high quality. I list them among the small specialty vendors because the owner is very hands on and is the person you will likely be dealing with. Other vendors most of us are familiar with in the niche areas of our hobby include Advanced Distributors in Shakopee, Minnesota, the go-to repairer of all things Distributors for our cars; Joe Curto in College Point, New York, for SU Carburetor parts; Martin MacGregor of Dundas, Ontario for door edge seals and that hard to find vinyl for the top of the dash panel behind the dashboard of an MGB, among other things; Dayton Wire Wheels and Cocker Tires would perhaps round out this listing of specialists. When the Usual Suspects Fail to Provide There are times when the various large and small suppliers don t have that part you need. Maybe it is an Adsorption Canister for the fuel venting system on your car, or a no longer available (NLA) trim piece or light. In any case, your only hope is often an on-line auction such as ebay. The easiest way in most cases to buy from ebay is to set up a PayPal account, which will deduct from your normal bank account or a back up credit card the money you pay to a vendor. Since ebay owns PayPal, the transaction and mailing information is seamlessly handled. You need to set up your PayPal accounts carefully, and be aware of PayPal scams perpetrated by thieves, as well as use something more complex than your dog s name for a password, so please be careful out there! EBay includes an ebay Motors section, which lists both cars and parts. At any given time there will be hundreds of thousands of parts and cars on the site, but if you fool around a bit with the sorting and searching methods, you can find what you are looking for pretty readily. Results can be mixed. Any car you buy on ebay is like visiting a car lot and looking at the car through a dirty window from 30 feet, and trusting the salesman that yes, indeed, the car runs. Sammy, the 1974 Triumph Spitfire that Followed Me Home is one such car. I didn t inspect the car in Page 10

advance and I was pretty sure I was in for some work when I bought him so I wasn t too disappointed. And frankly, a lot of the things that were wrong with him would have been very difficult to pinpoint without taking him apart, I fully believe that the seller was terribly clueless regarding the cars minuses. So caveat emptor, or let the buyer beware. On the plus side, it has been an interesting journey (although much more involved than originally planned) and well worth it. Simple parts are a different matter. Not all cars get restored, some get parted out so we can restore and maintain our prized examples. There are vendors who specialize in stripping cars and selling their parts on ebay, they tend to be organized, and sometimes a bit overpriced. Private owners are more realistic. I think it is because they just want to give the part a new home. The parts are sold as an auction; a best offer; or a buy it now. For an auction, I like to set a number in my mind as to what I believe the part is worth, and then add just a bit and put that in as my bid. The initial number shown is just enough to open the auction, or beat the previous bidders best bid by the required amount. Then I just put down my mouse, and back away from the computer. If I receive an that says my maximum amount was out bid, usually I will just ignore it and look for the next item. Sometimes it may wake me up to the fact that the part is harder to find than I thought, and I may consider other avenues, or bid up slightly to test the waters. For a best offer or a buy it now, I usually place a reasonable price about 20% below what the part is worth, and see if it is accepted. I always look carefully at the shipping prices because some sellers escalate the shipping and handling prices to a level where it is no longer a good purchase. What happens if you buy a part on ebay and find that it just doesn t work out? Well I ve done that more than once, usually due to a lack of understanding on my part when a change occurred in the part, but sometimes because the seller misrepresented or didn t understand the part. I will usually contact the seller and ask for a refund; shipping the part back at my own expense, if I feel like it was my error. If I feel like it was their error, I ask for return shipping as well. Most of the time, by keeping a positive attitude, I get positive results. On the few I haven t I simply chalked it up to the cost of doing my restorations, realizing that the vast majority of items I ve purchased have worked out just fine. I have found original brake master cylinders that needed re-sleeving and rebuilding, lighting items; interior parts; even a specific camshaft and head for building a European spec engine. Whether you are looking for that original part to complete the restoration, or just keeping the cost down on a rebuild, ebay can be a big help. This master cylinder is not horribly expensive from the big retailers, but I enjoy building them, and it can be done for a fraction of the cost. Here is the after picture as mounted on Sammy s bulkhead. And yes, it worked beautifully. Page 11

I ve also sold parts on ebay. The PayPal fees come out of the sales price; and there are listing fees. These costs have to be considered when listing an item. I like to use a lot of pictures and set a fair starting price. Since I m usually selling a part because I don t want to keep it around, I try to keep in mind that whatever I sell it for is more than I will realize if it is up in my attic, gathering dust. I usually include shipping, or if it is a small item, I use the USPS flat rate shipping so I can include a predictable price in my calculations. I ve sold interior parts; carburetors and manifolds I didn t intend to incorporate in my current build; books (yeah hard to believe based on the way I horde some of my reading collection); and other items. When I sell something on ebay, a lot of the time I will just keep the money in PayPal to fund future purchases, which sometimes include items for that portion of the house not involved in automotive restorations. There are other places to consider when buying or selling; Craigslist comes to mind, and I have had a lot of success with that site. But I always use a blind Hotmail style of account and I never go look at something I m considering without bringing someone with me, just to make sure it isn t a scam or worse. The only time I violated this rule was when I found my Audi A6 on Craigslist. It was at a dealer about six blocks away, and I figured it would be fine. Buying and Selling to Friends, Both Real and Virtual This final area is a bit more personal, as you are selling or buying from someone you ve gained a friendship with over time. I said both Real and Virtual because while I personally know a number of British car enthusiasts locally and around the country, I also have friends from message boards and forums on-line that I ve never met. Locally, I ve purchased wire wheels; gently used pistons; a parts washer; even a set of welding tanks. From Virtual friends, I ve purchased 1975 and later interior parts for Sammy because they are nicer than what was offered in A used air intake box was also purchased the same way, and from another source, bonnet latches and a single lug nut! In each case, the purchase was negotiated off the forum, using the private messaging service a lot of these forums provide, and I was quite happy with the results. I ve sold an extra but refurbished PDWA via this method, and a multitude of carburetor rebuilds, but most recently an entire gearbox. This is a gearbox I sold to a virtual friend in North Carolina. For $28 in materials and $90 in UPS charges, the gearbox was safely packed and shipped. Notice that the gearbox is bolted to the box sides through reinforcing 2x4s. I learned this packing trick from John Twist. The gearbox sale was interesting because it was a now redundant piece due to the purchase of an overdrive box from a shop in California. The OD gearbox came to me a bit banged up because the shipper did a poor job of securing it in the box. I really didn t need a second gearbox, and I mostly wanted to get it out of my garage. A virtual friend in North Carolina said that when we moved out there, he would take my low mileage gearbox off my hands as he had just had one fail. Of course, Diane and I decided against the move, but I offered to ship the box to him at his cost, and if it worked, he could pay me for the gearbox. He wisely said let s set a price now, so there are no hard feelings later, so I suggested a price that I knew we could both live with. I m glad I was able to help him out and pleased that I didn t just toss out a completely usable gearbox and more than a little pleased that the gearbox is continuing to provide great service in another car. Of course, I made sure that this gearbox Page 12

would more than survive the trip halfway across the country. I even received an from the buyer thanking me for those handles I built into the shipping crate. Next time I m in North Carolina on business, I think I ll look up my virtual friend and make him a real one. Safety Fast! 14 Part II: 2013 Scavenger Hunt Exploring in my MG By Jim Gevay The Hooper-Bowler-Hillstrom House Built in 1871 by Sandford A. Hooper in Belle Plaine, and sold in 1886 to Samuel Bowler, and then to the Hillstrom s in It s now owned by the city s historical society. Mr. Bowler added the two-story five hole outhouse. The 2 nd story of the outhouse is connected to the main house by a skyway. It was closed the morning I was there, so I don t know the times or days for the tours. Surprisingly, I found that 2 story outhouses are not that uncommon. The Northfield Bank Nearly everyone already knows the story of the James and Younger brothers raid on the Northfield Bank in Tours for the museum are entered around the corner through the Scriver Building. They have a 15 minute video presentation and a self-guided tour of the bank and its displays. They are the actual firearms that were captured from the Youngers, photos, clothing and Civil War uniforms on display. It s a small but interesting museum and bank, worth the $6.00. Fort Snelling After exploring the upper Fort with its boarded up barracks and other buildings earlier in the year, Kathy and I went there for the 4 th of July celebrations. They put on a great program, soldiers in 1850 s uniforms marching with a small band, and a flag raising. Afterwards, were a couple of speeches, a mock battle and a cannon salute at the end. There are a number of buildings and rooms to look through, like the general store, the hospital, the wheelwright s, the blacksmith shop and the Commandant s home. Everyone we met in period costumes were very happy to interact with the audience and were extremely informative. It was a great way to spend part of our Independence Day. Page 14

Oxford Mill Ruins Only three to four miles SW of Cannon Falls and just off Rt 24 on the Little Cannon River are the ruins of a flourmill built in Built by Archibald and Wilcox, it turned out flour that won a gold medal in the Philadelphia Exposition. At its peak, the mill could handle 400 bushels of wheat a day and employed men. Like many other mills, it was destroyed by fire in The second time I went back there looking for better light for photos, it was posted with no trespassing signs. Minnesota Air National Guard Museum Located on the north side of the Minneapolis- St Paul airport. Since this is on an active Military Air Base, you have to pass through security to enter the Museum. Just present a valid photo ID at the gate and then they ask you to open the car doors, bonnet, boot, glove box and armrest. They did a quick walk around look, never touching my car, and I was on my way in a few minutes. Go there when they have open cockpit weekends in the summer. There re two hangars full of exhibits, photos planes, engines and equipment. Outside are most of the planes, and some of the transport planes, like the Boeing C-97 and Lockheed C-130A are open for selfguided tours, but there are also volunteers around to answer your questions. How often do you get the chance to sit in the cockpit a F4C Phantom? In Sept 1920 Captain Ray Miller set out from Speedway Field, as MSP was known then, in a Curtiss Oriole for Washington. After talks with General Billy Mitchell and others, the 109 th Squadron was federally recognized. It was the first National Guard flying unit to achieve such status post war. Today the 133 rd Airlift Wing, fly C-130H Hercules from the Base. The museum is free, they only ask for donations. mnangmuseum.org Page 15

The Folsom House Located on Government St. in the Angel Hill district, of Taylors Falls and overlooking the river. W.H.C. Folsom moved his family there in 1850, became a lumber baron in the area and finished the house in This beautiful home is fully furnished with original belongings, a Grand piano and numerous dresses on display. Kathy and I were there before the Holiday Season and it was beautifully decorated for Christmas. I think this house and the Alexander Ramsey house in St Paul would be a great outing for the MG Girls. Only $5.00, Go to chisagocountyhistory.org for more information. The Henry H. Sibley House Across the Minnesota River from Fort Snelling and just off the Sibley Memorial Hwy, are the oldest stone homes in Minnesota. The Henry H. Sibley house, next door is the Faribault house pictured here, and the Hypolite Du Pois building, were all built in the mid 1830 s. One block away is the Church of St Peter, founded in 1840, and the oldest continuous church in Minnesota. The Henry H. Sibley home was an important meeting place for fur traders, Indians and soldiers, and served as the State s first Governor s Mansion in Go to historicfortsnelling.org The St Paul Union Stockyards Exchange Building Built in 1887 on Concord St for the nearby stockyards, it housed the Swift and Armour Company s, and South St Paul s first post office and bank. In 1933 the packing plant payroll was robbed by the Ma Barker and Alvin Creepy Karpis gang. In the past few years it housed a hotel, which didn t work out and now a restaurant, which wasn t open. I went there on a warm summer evening and got this reflection shot in the building across the street. It s the only time I was able to include myself and my car in the same photo with the subject.
