(See attachments) o Nebraska Traffic Fatality Toll Comparison as of May 16, 2013 o 2013 Nebraska Railroad Fatalities include a new fatality on 5/14/13 Saline County (near Dorchester, NE). There are 2 total for 2013 vs. 2 total for the entire year of 2012 o 2013 Non-Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities o 2012 Operation Lifesaver, Inc. Statistics Worksheet Note: Discussion was held regarding what the Class I Railroads are doing about how aggressive they are being on closing crossings and working with local communities to close railroad crossings. Board and Officer Report: Board: The NE OL Board of Directors met and discussed the following items: OL Trailer, Operation Lifesaver Authorized Volunteer Program, Financial Budget Overview, Nebraska Operation Lifesaver Raffle, Game and Parks Hunting Educational Program and Bylaws. Those in attendance were: Carol Daley, Marv Kohout, Gary Sydzyik, Deb Ashworth, Ron Scholz, Richard Kotan and Larry Johnson. Provided by Nebraska Office of Highway Safety 1
2 General Secretary/Supplies: If you are in need of supplies, contact Hilda Gurwell at or by at Treasurer: Balance on hand as of April 30, 2013 was $25, Carol reviewed financials with the committee. Contributions were received from IMG Funding-Ron Scholz, Harriman Dispatch Fund Raiser for Girl Scouts and Funds for Effective Government. East Co-Coordinator: Hilda Gurwell continues to book presentations. West Co-Coordinator: Pat Leahy is the Western Nebraska Area Coordinator. Old Business: Hunter Project Update Carol Daley OLI has a new Project Manager who has been assigned to complete the Hunter/Fisherman Visor Cards by August 1 st. This will coincide with the newsletter which will be sent out in September/October. Partnership with Bellevue Public Schools Carol Daley Deb Ashworth gave an update about LaVerne & Shirley s Adventures in Nebraska and the grant they are writing to place this book in a total of 721 schools in Nebraska. NE OL Trailer Larry Erickson Carol Daley gave a brief history of the mobile training trailer and why it is important to get a new one (several committee members gave updates on all the problems with the old trailer). Larry Erickson gave an update on what he has completed on the trailer (electrical, fuse box, heaters, and lights) and is basically waiting on the locomotive console. He will still need to put insulation, covering for walls and ceiling, and ramps for back door. Anyone who is interested in helping with this project needs to contact Carol Daley at or by at neolcadaley@cox.net. Channel 10 & 11 Lincoln (with Lance Schwartz) Tom Hillyard The committee viewed the video on NE OL that was aired Channel 10/11 with Lance s Journal. Copies of the DVD are available upon request. Omaha Equestrian Event Century Link/Omaha April 12 & 13 Tom Hillyard Tom Hillyard gave a booth update on the Century Link s Omaha Equestrian Event. Seventeen presentations were given to an audience of over 300. Chris Niemeyer and Perry West also helped at the booth. NE OL 2013 Raffle Update Carol Daley Carol Daley gave a raffle update on the NE OL trailer fundraiser. They are planning on selling raffle tickets 5 times at the UP Headquarters. Carol gave a full account of raffle activity and on how well sales are doing. Bylaws Update Carol Daley, Rick Kotan Rich Kotan and Carol Daley reviewed the NE OL By-laws changes. The State Committee was given copies of the proposed changes and all suggestions on changes need to be turned into Carol Daley by June 15 th. (See attachment) New Business: Crash Car Trailer Carol Daley Carol Daley stated that Union Pacific/North Platte Service Unit purchased a new car trailer for our latest OL crash car. College World Series June 15 thru June 25/26 Hilda Gurwell Hilda gave an update on the College World Series booth. NE OL booth is now considered the greeting venue for Union Pacific s Steam Engine and other events. Test of Life will be given at the booth for entry into a Provided by Nebraska Office of Highway Safety 2
3 drawing for a train set. Advance Warning Sign fans, water and sunscreen will also be handed out. The booth will be manned from 12:00 noon until 7:00 p.m. Hilda will be assigning 3 hour shifts from June 14 th -25/26th. If you are able to help work at the OL booth at this event contact Hilda Gurwell at or Hilda.Gurwell@Up.com. Nebraska State Fair August 23 thru September 2 Hilda Gurwell The NE OL trailer will be at Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island. It will be located at the same location (by the 4H main building) from August 24 th to September 2 nd. There is a need for volunteers for manning the booth. If you are able to help work at the OL booth at this event contact Hilda Gurwell at or Hilda.Gurwell@Up.com. Update for new presenter training Carol Daley Carol Daley gave an update on Operation Lifesaver s new process for volunteers. Nebraska State Coordinators and trainers are Carol Daley NE OL; Tom Micek BNSF; Mike Foster UPRR; and Deb Ashworth UPRR. Carol Daley and Deb Ashworth will be attending the one day training workshop in Denver on July 1, Tom Micek and Mike Foster will also participate in the training via webinar. Media Grant Ron Scholz Ron Scholtz updated the State Committee on the OLI PSA Grant which represents different categories to ensure that ongoing Public Service Announcements will be heard throughout Nebraska from May through the end of the year. Ron is hoping to get joint sponsorships on this awareness educational campaign which will allow a multiplier effect on the dollars. Projects: Professional Drivers Larry Johnson No additional information available at this time. Trucking/Insurance Company Contacts Larry Johnson, Ron Scholz No additional information available at this time. Projects 2013 On May 23 rd a safety day will be held at Offutt Air Force Base. The event will be covered by Tom Hillyard, Chris Niemeyer and Carol Daley. Open Discussion: Hilda Gurwell updated the State Committee on the Dennis Beachler Safety Award which was won by Pat Leahy. Stu Sutherland updated the NE OL committee that this year at the Boy Scout Summer Camps railroad safety trespassing will be included at the camp. In our continued awareness of photographers taking pictures on railroad tracks, Mike Meyer, Nebraska State Patrol, stated that he would like anyone who sees bad ads, pictures, or newspaper articles to forward to him for handling. He can be ed at mike.meyer@nebraska.gov. Chip Frazier update NE OL Committee that OLI is making photographers a specific targeted group to address the trespassing issues. 7 OPERATION LIFESAVER, INC. STATISTICS WORKSHEET 1. Most collisions occur with trains traveling under 30 mph. (Visual 4) 2. Approximately 64% of all collisions occur in daylight hours. (Visual 4) 3. Most collisions occur within 25 miles of the driver s home. (Visual 4) 4. Approximately every 3 hours (some place in the United States) a collisions occurs between a train and a vehicle or a train and a pedestrian. (Visual 4) 5. You are 20 times more likely to die in a collision with a train than in a collision involving another motor vehicle. (Visual 4) 6. At 55 mph, it may take a train up to a mile or more to stop. (Visual 7) 7. Nearly 50% of all collisions occur at crossings equipped with active warning devices. (Visual 15) 8. Nearly 25% of all collisions occur when the vehicle runs into the side of the train.
