Unfortunately we could not find a way to import my database with the ID card database so that meant a lot of manual data entry. Ruben was game though and stayed until nearly 9:00 to finish up those who stayed after the meeting. We will try again in April to get a few more. If you did not get done in March, please show up in April. For those on the east side of the county (Bisbee/Douglas/Portal), you may make an appointment and go to his office in Bisbee. 2 The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by President KD7OED. Other board members present were NJ7C (Vice President), KD7TDL (Treasurer), KD7HAB (Secretary), and WB6OTS (Member at Large). Secretary s Report: A motion by KK7NO seconded by W8UXD to approve the minutes of the previous meeting as published approved by a unanimous vote. Treasurer Report KD7TDL reported that as of March we have $11, in the saving account, this includes the antenna fund, which is $2,401.97, and the Life memberships $1, checking account has $ Total funds are $15,086.50and the operating funds are $10, A copy of this report is posted on the bulletin board in Larson Hall. Randy KC8TUG made the motion Doug N8QEN seconded the motion to accept the budget as it was presented last month. The motion was accepted. Vice President s Report Membership we have 7 life, 76 full, 23 family, 9 associate, and 1 honorary. Then we have license 37 Extra, 18 Advanced, 27 General, 27 No Code Tech, 4 Tech Plus. Dale NJ7C also has name badges if you do not have yours check with him he might have it. If you have upgraded and it is not right on the web page also let NJ7C know and he will get it changed. NJ7C announced that the web page has been updated. President s Report KD7OED reported that Ron W1YYO is in Washington State and his health will not allow him to return to Sierra Vista. Board meeting was held last Monday Feb. 26 th The lease renewal is being worked on Mr. Hamilton & Mike Evans are actively working on the lease renewal. Miss. Lin Hu has asked us to draw up a new site plan and Master plan for the club since the old ones are 20 years old; she would also like a new letter of agreement. Have questions and would like to get it straight. Mike Evans is going for a 99-year lease so we do not have to do this in another 20 years. ARCA REPORT KD7OED and WB6OTS attended the ARCA meeting in Yuma. Can order license plates on Line it may take awhile to get them. Several people along with John Lanza went before the House committee to testify; now it will go before the Senate committee. The Amateur License plates are still $25.00 with $8.00 going to State $17.00 going to ARCA. Here is our score for the International DX contest this year Claimed Score: 33,033 Contacts: 143 Country Multipliers: 77 There is a list along with a map posted on the bulletin board in the back of Larson Hall Member at Large WB6OTS report that a new license class is going to be held starting in April. The class will be held the 7, 14, 21, and 28 at 8:30 in the morning at Green Acres. The test will be given on May 5 th 2007 at the Hamfest. K4AFN will be helping with the class. There is a new book out and that is the book you need. There will be a General Class in the fall; there will be articles in the paper for the classes. HAMFEST KC8TUG reported that the radio is in for the Hamfest. Raffle tickets are being done up. They will be ready after the meeting. We need a cook for the Hamfest. Planning meeting is March 24, Flyers have been handed out at several of the last Hamfests and flyers were left with Tom Fagan for the next Hamfest. Material Director AD7HZ reported that we have had several people make donations to the club and that W8UXD and KB7ND will be picking up more things that are being donated. The next run to Sonoita will be the 17 th of March If you want to help over there or help unload here good. The more help the better.

3 Technical Director KB7RDG reported that W8UXD, KB7RDG and AD7HZ got the tri band antenna working on 10,15 & 20 meters. The connectors have been ordered when they come in the guys will get the circulator working. Also Lee mentioned that some connectors where found in Pete s Palace on Saturday. A crew plans on going up on the 24 th of March to install the circulator. The Generator has been fixed. K7HVV reported on the Bike races coming up on the 28 & 29 of April in Bisbee. Need chase vehicles. Races Report: N7INK reported that this has been an extremely busy month for RACES. New badges are being issued tonight during the meeting to RACES members. Several interesting searches this past month. Dice 07 is the week of March 12 to the 16. Also went to Wilcox and checked out the radio at the hospital. NET REPORT K4AFN mentioned it was good to have someone else do the net every now and then so if anybody would like to do the net get in touch with K4AFN and help out. It is also always good to have new people on the net every Thursday night at 7:00 PM on pl SMOKE K9TED puts out the SMOKE every month if you get it by and by snail mail and would only like it one way let Ted know. OLD BUSINESS Nothing for old business that had not been mentioned before. New Business No new business 50/50 $50.00 in the pot $25.00 goes to the winner of the drawing which was Ken Carpenter WA7UIM. The next meeting will be on April 2 nd Meeting was adjourned at 8:10 pm Respectfully submitted, Pat Thies/KD7HAB, Secretary MORE ITEMS FROM THE RACES NOTES Bob Hollister, N7INK Frequency Update - Earlier this month I provided some information concerning possible frequencies for use in Cochise County. David Schurian (KD7LSD) provided an additional tip for use near Portal. There is a repeater on Jack's Peak in New Mexico on (PL Tone 141.3) that is linked with the repeater on Heliograph. He said that repeater provides good coverage from near Douglas along Highway 80 on into New Mexico as well as into the Portal/Cave Creek area. Just a note that the 2m simplex frequencies in the AZ band plan are on 20 KHz centers, so , 54, 56, etc. When we use we can cause interference on the adjacent channels. We will change the to to avoid that potential problem. My thanks to Mike (N7CK) for bringing that to my attention. At approximately 1430 hours on 12 February 2007 the RACES team received notification by page of a search mission at the Kartchner Caverns State Park for two missing Canadian ladies. It had been reported that two vacationing ladies in their 30 s had gone for a day hike on one of the trails in the mountains behind Kartchner. Apparently they started their hike fairly early in the morning and were last seen around 9:00 near one of the trailheads. We arrived on scene at approximately 15:15 hours and set up operations. After an extensive effort by the SAR Ground Teams assisted by AZ DPS Ranger, the young ladies were located near French Joe Canyon. The ladies were definitely not in the area that was initially anticipated based on their projected hiking plans. Fortunately they

4 had come upon a jeep with the keys in it up higher in the mountains and drove it down to within a few hundred yards of Highway 90 where they encountered a locked gate. One of the ground teams was headed into that canyon to conduct a search when they were located. The mission was completed and the MCU returned to the Club Site by 00:15. At approximately 2115 hours on 27 February 2007 the RACES team received notification by page of a search mission in St. David for a missing 50+ year old female. It had been reported that the lady was despondent due the loss of a close family member the day before, consumed a quantity of alcohol, and stormed out of the house in anger. We arrived on scene at approximately 2230 hours and set up operations. One ground team was already deployed and searching the area behind the house and located some possible shoe prints belonging to the missing subject. Shortly thereafter the ground team located the subject and she was brought back in to the CP area. An EMS team/ambulance was requested to check out the subject due to possible hypothermia. It was quite chilly and windy during the evening while she was out. The mission was completed and the MCU returned to the Club Site by 0115 (2/28). The Search and Rescue Team has was asked by the Bisbee PD to assist in searching for a missing subject who was kidnapped a few weeks ago. They had info that his body was dumped near or in the San Pedro River between HWY 92 and the US/Mexico border. At 07:30 on Saturday 3 March 2007, the MCU deployed from Green Acres to the "Bright Spot Bar" on Hwy 92 ( N/ W). At approximately 08:00, the MCU arrived at the CP and was set up: MCU sited and leveled, generator started, Big Stick antenna installed and the mast extended to full height, computers booted, Logging, APRS, Mapping, and Mast Camera software started. By 08:30, coffee was ready. Six teams were deployed: two ground teams; two mounted teams; and two ATV teams. Geographically they were deployed one each on the West and one each on the East banks of the San Pedro River. Search operations proceeded South to the Mexican Border. As of 12:00, there had been no success and the second operational shift took over. The mission continued to approximately 14:00 with no attributable sign being uncovered. At approximately 1615 hours on 3 March 2007 the RACES team received notification by page of a technical rescue mission. After receiving clarification from dispatch the RACES team deployed to the Cochise Stronghold to assist. A young lady had apparently fallen and severely injured her back and was possibly suffering from head trauma as well. Fortunately for the subject, the assistance from the AZ DPS Rescue Helicopter and the SAR Technical team recovered her before darkness set in. Their quick action was completed just prior to the arrival of the MCU and the RACES team turned around to return to Sierra Vista. At approximately 1930 hours on 24 March 2007 the RACES team received notification by page of a search mission in the Ramsey Canyon area of the Huachuca Mountains for two lost hikers. The report came in via cell phone to the Sheriff s dispatch that there were two hikers near the intersection of the Crest Trail, Sunnyside Trail and Pat Scott Peak Trail. They had found trail markers but were not sure how to get back down from their location. Three ground teams were deployed. AZ DPS Phoenix Ranger began to conduct an air search and found them as they flashed their phone (camera?) as they flew over. DPS was unable to land due to the terrain but provided good grid coordinates. DPS proceeded to a landing zone near the Search CP, picked up some clothing,and then air dropped this package with Chem-Lights and a note to the missing party to advise them a team was

5 enroute by ground to their location. The mission was completed and the MCU returned to the Club Site by 0215 (3/25). A QUICK SMILE Two hydrogen atoms walk into a bar. One says, I ve lost my electron. The other says, Are you sure? The other says, Yes, I m positive. The RACES Communications team participated in the Department of Defense Interoperability Communications Exercise (DICE) 07 hosted by the Joint Interoperability Test Center (JITC) at Fort Huachuca during the period March The team used the Cochise County Mobile Communications Unit (MCU) during this exercise. DICE 07 activity provides a unique opportunity for emergency responders around the state to participate in an unparalleled learning experience. This year responders from city, county, state, federal and military agencies assembled at Fort Huachuca to participate in a simulated terrorist attack. Starting as a local incident, the requirement for multiple agencies and the injection of a hostage incident quickly elevated it to a situation requiring unified command. A specific goal for the Cochise County team was to ensure the recently assigned nationwide interoperability channels (VTAC/UTAC) were tested and functional within the county.
