From the President By J. Gaylord Kingston Our plans for our Anniversary Reunion are going very well and the response from the membership is very gratifying. By all indications, we will have a good number for this special occasion. It is also good to see that our members are responding to the appeal to utilize the internet to receive C and A monthly. It is very important for our continuance as an organization. We had a very good number for our June General Meeting. It is the last one for the Summer and we will reconvene on Sunday September 8, The Executive will met as regular dates in order to finalize the plans for the reunion. C and A will continue as usual monthly. From the Executive, Board of Directors and myself, do have a Happy and Healthy Summer vacation. Quote of the Month: Birthdays are good for you the more that you have, the longer you will live. Newsletter of the Atlantic Chief & Petty Officer s Association

4 Feature of the Month The Perils of Nobby Incident at Cigarillo Bay (not a war story) Ed. s note : This story has been edited for space and the horrific details contained therein. I ve witnessed it many times That look of resignation in the eyes. that last whisper. The quiet acceptance and / or the shouted defiance, these culminations of sickness, drowning, accident, enemy action. But I, myself, have never reached that moment of darkness. never looked over the edge of the precipice into that yawning pit of what? You name it. I d come close, for several aforesaid reasons, but never to that almost finality. That is until In 196?, I was a Chief Petty Officer serving in a destroyer in Southern waters employed in Sonar trails. I was at breakfast one morning when Bill, our Engine Room Artificer, suggested that we go ashore for a a swim. We sallied forth with the appropriate gear after lunch and a tot. In 10 minutes we arrived at a very attractive beach that was occupied by families, groups and individuals enjoying their surroundings. Bill and I left our belongings in tote bags and entered the welcoming waters with our bathing suits and pale winterized bodies. I recall doing the usual things : swimming, racing, floating, diving, dunking and looking. ( not too much of the latter. both being well behave, married men. ) In about 15 minutes about 50 feet from shore, my enjoyment was suddenly cut short. Not suddenly, but slowly, creeping then fiercely, I began to feel a stinging on my arms, legs and body. I looked around sharply and there it was. A memory of Crete20 years past allowed me to recognize the Portuguese Man of War. Within seconds, I felt ill. I called to Bill no reply. Looking down into the water, I seemed to be in the middle of a milky, sticky froth of thin white tentacles and colouress jelly. Panic? I think that I must have. I shouted again, splashing, Jellyfish Get help. I then swam, or tried to, clawing at the soft substances clinging to my body. I looked up and saw the beach occupants hurriedly leaving. I swam lunging and tearing at the stinging mass. Was I in a losing battle? My mind was now inundated with noises: a large organ was playing. My poor family was calling to me. My eyes stung. A hundred pictures and actions flashed through my mind. I was taking in too much water. The organ and the noise of rushing water were much louder now. Did I hear, Jesus, Love of my Soul? Was that a dead sailor s face saying something to me? The pain was worsening and my struggles weaker. I was beginning to think. finish it! One good gulp and the agony would be gone. I tore again at the sticky jellied mass. I was at the edge of the yawning pit. ED.s note: Did Jack succumb to this gruesome ordeal? Did he employ a Ghost Writer? A later issue will give the answer to these burning' questions. The viability of our newsletter cannot be understated. The only revenue that the Association takes in at this time is our membership dues. While our numbers diminish slightly due to attrition, our costs remain high and grow with each year. We will not lower the quality or quantity of the newsletter, as this would not affect the end result. Our costs are those of the printing and the mailing which are high which are an economical burden on our finances. Editor s Note - Regarding This Newsletter I have proposed two (2) solutions: one being the bi-monthly issue of C and A and the more advisable one to have the membership receive C and A on the internet. We realize that not everyone has the access to the internet via a computer, but we are sure that this would be in the minority of our members. The advantage that our present and future members that utilize this method receive is that you get C and A almost as it is printed, a time saver of at least a week, It is also 4 possible to print it off the internet if you choose to retain copies. I would appreciate a reply as to your thoughts to these proposals as we will have to make a decision in the near future in order to stabilize our budget. I would ask that you pass your opinion either to the office acpoa@eastlink.ca or myself gaylordk@yahoo.com. Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation.

5 Reunion Update The registrations for our 2013 Anniversary Reunion are being returned at a good rate and it bodes well for a good tournout of members and guests. In fact, we have had to instigate a Plan B in the case of a resultant of more than 200 persons attending. The Waterfront Hotel, which will be the base of our operations, can seat 200 persons for our dinner. If we exceed this number, and we trust that we may, we would utilize the caterer s facility in Hamilton, a mere 20 minutes away. There would be a shuttle service supplied by the caterer for those who would require it. Those with private vehicles, such as myself, would be requested to utilize their own to reach the site. This will be determined when we realize the number of persons attending the dinner. **** Indications are that we will exceed the 200 number, therefore the dinner will be held at the Hamilton location. The private vehicle use as shown above remains in effect. The sale of.55 cent raffle tickets announced in the last C and A has ceased (before it began, they remain at $5.00 a ticket or 3 for $ ) and the lodgings at the Best Western have been reduced to $ (tax incl.) The costs remain: $ per person (dinner, Meet & Greet and name tag) $ per person (Niagara Falls - Friday) $ per person (Haida - Saturday -We tried to negotiate with Parks Canada on the admission fee and the best that we could do was the group rate. Those entering Haida will be required to $ 3.40 at the brow. When you remit your payment for the reunion, please advise the Treasurer as to what you are actually paying for. The raffle tickets should have your name, address and phone number clearly printed on them as the draw will be by that method. Dinner Menu Saturday September Non-Alcoholic Punch Oven fresh European Rolls and Butter Hearty Vegetable Soup Pasta. Tri - Coloured Fussilli Homemade Sauce Entrée Grilled Breast of Chicken with sauce Medallions of Beef Au Jus Roasted Rosemary Potatoes Garden Vegetable Medley Dessert Peach Melba Why Men Are Never Depressed: Men Are Just Happier People What do you expect from such simple creatures? Your last name stays put. The garage is all yours. Wedding plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack... You can never be pregnant. You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park. You can wear NO shirt to a water park. Car mechanics tell you the truth. The world is your urinal. You never have to drive to another gas station restroom because this one is just too icky. You don't have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Same work, more pay. Wrinkles add character. Wedding dress $5000. Tux rental-$100. People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them. New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood all the time. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks. A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. If someone forgets to invite you,he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is $8.95 for a threepack. Three pairs of shoes are more than enough.. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes.. Everything on your face stays its original color. The same hairstyle lasts for years, even decades. You only have to shave your face and neck. You can play with toys all your life. One wallet and one pair of shoes -- one color for all seasons. You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look. You can 'do' your nails with a pocket knife. You have freedom of choice concerning growing a mustache. You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24 in 25 minutes. 5

He is assigned to helping the other monks in copying the old canons and laws of the church by hand. He notices, however, that all of the monks are copying from copies, not from the original manuscript. So, the new monk goes to the head abbot to question this, pointing out that if someone made even a small error in the first copy, it would never be picked up! In fact, that error would be continued in all of the subsequent copies. The head monk, says, 'We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son.' He goes down into the dark caves underneath the dark monastery where the original manuscripts are held as archives in a locked vault that hasn't been opened for hundreds of years.. Hours go by and nobody sees the old abbot.. So, the young monk gets worried and goes down to look for him. He sees him banging his head against the wall and wailing, 'W e missed the R! We missed the R! We missed the R!' His forehead is all bloody and bruised and he is crying uncontrollably. The young monk asks the old abbot, 'What ' s wrong, father?' With A choking voice, the old abbot replies, 'The word was... CELEBRATE!!!' 7
