Pictured below is the tomahawk of Meriwether Lewis (Lewis & Clark). They used a similar tomahawk, but not as fancy, as a gift to the Indians they encountered during there now famous trek West from These tomahawks were quite unusual in that besides the normal blade which could be used for war the back end is a bowl for tobacco to smoke for peace. This oil painting by Alonzo Megaree ca 1948 is titled "Cowboys Dream" was used as A-1 Beer companies logo. It was seen in bars all across AZ. Can you spot his dream?
What a wonderful ride to Mena we had Thurs Feb 23. The sun was out the whole time and it got into the upper 70 s. Tom lead us on a tortuous ride to the Chopping Block restaurant in Mena. This is the place for steak and hamburgers. They have fresh ground round and they will prepare it as RARE as you want. After lunch we went to Queen Wilhelmina Lodge. The restaurant in the Lodge remained the same but the lobby and entrance were made larger and brighter. Some of the new riders had not been there yet. And they were duly impressed. Then we rode further west into Oklahoma. It was a long ride but well worth it. Ps-Arkansas is prettier than OK.Remember their short lived slogan Oklahoma is OK No offense to OK, but this is the Editor s opinion. The Newly remodeled Queen Wilhelmina Lodge. They really did a nice job!! Load um up Move um out Let s Ride

David & Marcia Anderson live in Mena and they have been GWRRA members since They have a 1986 Aspencade bike and an Aspencade pearl 2005 trike. Whenever we go out their way, which they say it not much, they join us. They keep up with us by reading the Newsletter (plug plug) and all other s. Johnny Broome is a recent member and has lived his whole life in AR. He is a pilot and flies over fires dumping that brown stuff (Valerie s technical term) onto the fire. Johnny took this picture of a dead skunk on the rode. Must have been impressed with the ride. And, here we have our Humble Servant, Valerie. She is standing by Lovers Leap. This is a trail that parallels the cliffs and ends, guess where??? Right at the edge where you can leap 800 ft into the trees. She didn t leap!

Selecting Motorcycle Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) By Tom Harrison Chapter AR-E Educator I have seen too many riders not take the time to think through their PPE needs which resulted in discomfort and added danger to situations. I am well versed in this since I have made just about every mistake there is. When you prepare for a ride, whether it be local or cross country tour, you need to focus on: What type of weather might I encounter? What is the range of temperatures I must prepare for? Have I given enough consideration to protecting my entire body?? What are the tradeoffs with each selection? Let s step through this from the feet to the top of our heads: a. The feet should be covered with boots that are over the ankles. If you have ever see a biker with a broken ankle and/or heard the recovery stories, you would NOT argue that point. b. Pack enough cotton underwear to be comfortable. Some touring motorcyclist wear sheer microfiber underwear that can be washed nightly and dry by morning. Chose underwear that wicks off moisture in the summer time to keep you cooler. c. There is a wide array of pants you can wear including those designed specifically for motorcycling. Carefully balance coolness or warmth depending on riding conditions versus resistance to abrasions should you crash. I typically wear jeans but for the upcoming ride to Glacier National Park, I plan to wear armored mesh pants and jacket. Underneath this will be a short sleeve tee shirt and shorts!! The best of both worlds.cool yet I m covered for potential road rash. Avoid Kevlar since it itches and is hot. d. For your jacket, I would avoid leather except if your ride in cool weather. Leathers are excellent protection but hot and could cause heat sickness in the summer. Again, I vote for an armored mesh jacket. e. For a potentially wide temperature range, carry clothes that allow layering or electrically heated vest and gloves. If it gets warm, peel off a layer. I purposely purchased my armored mesh jacket larger than necessary so I can easily layer underneath. The zip in rain liner cuts the wind plus I can add fleece jacket and other layers as dictated by the cold. You should always carry an extra set of gloves. Perforated gloves make a difference in hot weather and lined gloves in the winter. Make sure the fingers are flexible because, if they are stiff, you hand will tire on a long ride. f. It is important that you carry suntan lotion and UV screener lip balm to protect your skin. Not being a fan of suntan lotion, I would rather wear clothing that covers the gaps e.g. between the gloves and the jacket, helmet and the jacket, etc. I plan to add bandanas to our riding gear to eliminate another use of sun tan lotion. Also carry an emergency kits for bug bites, cuts etc. g. In selecting a helmet, think about temperature versus protection. I love my full coverage helmet but it is difficult to take a drink of water while riding unless I used a hose. On a long tour, I might wear a three quarter helmet to allow for easier hydration since, for me, heat sickness is a higher risk that getting my face road burned in a crash.
By: Jack Wagner Deputy Director Region H Trainer Who Chooses Whom?? As we continue our trek thru the Officer's Handbook, we find the section of the Handbook relating to the officer appointment process to be outdated - the process was changed in In order to find the proper appointment processes for all officers of our Association, one must look at the section titled Officer Appointing Process on the Officer Resources page of the GWRRA website. Hopefully we all know that Directors, Assistant Directors and Educators have always been officers of our Association. Beginning in 2010, Region and District Trainers became officers. In 2011, Membership Enhancement Coordinators and Treasurers at all levels were added as officers. And what may be new news to many is that beginning in 2017, Motorist Awareness Coordinators at the Region and District levels are now also officers of our Association. The appointment process for Operations officers is as follows. Where the box says 'Director', it is referring to the appointing Director for example, when appointing a Chapter Director, the box refers to the District Director; when appointing a District Director, the box refers to the Region Director and so on.
