Winter Hiking Gear - What to Bring and Wear These are just my thoughts and suggestions; it is not an all-encompassing checklist. My objective is simply to get everyone to think about this topic and to do what one feels must be done on an individual level. These, then, are the mere ramblings of a mountain man. What you will need for your winter hike will depend on the weather, the length of your hike, the trail conditions, and, obviously, your budget. It is, in the end, a very personal decision to engage in winter hikes. Still, many actually prefer the solitude of off-season outdoor activities than they do when everyone and his brother are out there during the summer months. For example, I kayak as well as hike year-round, and I feel very comfortable in extreme conditions. I enjoy the peace and quiet of nature when it is not crowded with tourists. I also do not like to spend a mint on clothing, as I tend to be pretty rough on my clothes and they eventually need replacement, thus I shop primarily at Walmart and Goodwill for my outdoor outfits. I also buy sale items from kayaking and hiking outfitters (such as wetsuits and other neoprene clothing). What is important, however, is that I thoroughly plan my gear and clothing before I engage in an activity. Rather than trying to make a fashion statement, I put safety foremost. In the winter, I may look sartorially challenged, but I am warm. For any outdoor activity, always check the weather and the associated realfeel temperature using an NWS wind chill chart. I have placed this chart at the end of this article for your reference. Moreover, always keep an All Hazards NOAA Weather Radio with you at all times, and use it. Most good VHF and two-way radios have a weather band on them. Always bring a cellular telephone that works in your hiking location; even if there is no service on your instrument because of the geography, in life-threatening situations the authorities can triangulate on your instrument. Moreover, a good VHF radio is an excellent investment, and one should be brought along on all winter or off-season hikes. For winter hiking, I like to wear at least one layer of long underwear (a farmer john, which would be called a farmer jane for females). At times, when it is very cold, I have worn a neoprene farmer john wetsuit under my layer of clothes. Waterproof and windproof rain pants and a shell (or waterproof splash) jacket are great outerwear (Gore-Tex or a similar material is best). Fleece pants and acrylic sweaters below the outerwear work well also.
Much of your body s heat is lost from your head, so a good head covering is essential. Keeping your extremities warm are very important, so strong mittens snug at the wrist on top of base gloves are practical, so as to retain heat and resist wetness. As you know, cold shuts down our body from the outside (the extremities are affected first), and hypothermia can follow. Hypothermia can take place if your body s temperature falls below 9 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep in mind that frostbite on exposed skin occurs if the air temperature is below freezing, and the wind chill can make the temperature become below freezing. That is, you may be looking at an outdoor thermometer that says it is degrees outside. But if there is a MPH wind that does not register on temperature gauges, it is then actually 29 degrees outside, which is below freezing. And never bring or drink alcohol on a winter hike; drinking that drug will lower your body s core temperature, and it may induce hypothermia. Since hypothermia is a slow killer, and it takes place over a period of time, you may not realize the harm you are doing to yourself until it is too late. Wear thick, winter-weight socks and sock liners, such as wool, and it may be a good idea to carry an extra pair of socks in your back pack. That is, wearing two pairs of socks (a thin one and a thick one) are good. At times, for hikes, I will wear neoprene socks that are made for kayaking. I figure that if I can be standing waist high in the Potomac River with icebergs floating by me, and not be cold, it should work on dry land as well. As noted, gloves and mittens are a necessity, as is a good hat (or more than one). Make sure these items are wool or synthetic or neoprene. And, no, a baseball cap is not a warm hat to have in the winter, even if the team logo on it is of a really hot team. Think about getting a Balaclava so that your face is covered when it is frigid or a full face mask whereby only the eyes and nose have holes on it (I got each of these items at Walmart for $ each). For very cold days, wear two pairs of gloves and two hats: one for insulation and one for waterproofing. An outfit setup like this will keep you dry in case of precipitation and warm when you reach an exposed area. For footwear, as a final covering, above the boots, gaiters or chaps are good (as an aside, leather chaps should be worn on trails in the warm season to prevent snake bites). If the snow is deep, gaiters can prevent the snow from entering your boots and causing frostbite. A poor man s gaiters can be made of waterproof tarp secured with duct tape at both ends.
For short hikes on clear trails, which could happen in the winter, good sneakers or trail shoes are fine. But when the trail is a victim to nature s wintry discontent, or there is much snow and ice, good hiking shoes or boots are required. My favorite boots for wet trails are Sorels. On icy trails, removable ice cleats that slip on top of your boots are great (Stabilicers are probably the best). They can actually fit in your back pack (get the ones that do not have sharp points, as we do not plan on traversing glaciers and you do not want to perforate your body). Wear a non-cotton base layer (i.e., polypropylene or the equivalent). For short hikes, jeans are fine with long johns (or long janes) underneath, with the proper layers. Remember: If you stay dry, you can stay warm. Sweat can be very bad; you want to wear layers of clothing so that sweat will be wicked away to your outer layers. Sweat can be deadly if you stop on the trail and it gets cold and it drops your body temperature. You can get hypothermia and freeze from cold sweat. You will appear dry on the outside, but be wet on the inside where the damage will be done to your body s core. Bring plenty of water and plenty of food; bring enough for yourself, and then add a little more in case I get hungry. A back pack and a waist pack are excellent items to have. Both are practical year-round, and the waist pack can carry items that you may want to easily grab along the trail. Carrying items in your hands is not practical. I tend to bring much gear, in addition to food and water. I have safety gear that may include rope and flares, a first aid kit, an SLR camera, a radio, toolkit, food, water, a knife, another knife, and then other items. And then I have a knife as well. But remember to maintain enough space in the pack to place clothing therein that you will "shed" during the hike as you warm up. Wear proper eyewear (wear sunglasses when hiking in the snow and tinted goggles if there is high wind). Wrap-around sunglasses with a Balaclava are best for the head. Just remember to take them off if you walk into a bank after the hike. While we will not hike when there is a solid possibility of rain, precipitation may still occur when we are outdoors. The falling snow may be hit with a warm front and turn it into water. Rain and wind gear are thus needed to
fight the wind chill and possible wetness. And remember that water resistant is not the same as water proof. Be an onion. Dress in loose-fitting layers. Trapped air between the layers acts as insulation. The conventional wisdom is to have a non-cotton base layer (i.e., such as Under Armour) against your skin. Above that, wear insulating materials, and maintain space between the layers. Don t make your clothing skintight, even though you may want the wildlife to see your fine figure, as that will defeat the purpose of layering. The better layering clothes are made of fleece and wool, or synthetic material, as they do a great job of insulating. The final layer is called a "shell" and it may be a combination of wind resistant or wind proof material. If you get too warm, then shed some layers, and if you get too cold, put them back on. As you take layers off, they can be stored in your back pack. Conjointly, if the temperature lowers, you can take them back out and put them back on. Again, the bottom layer (i.e., underwear) that is against your flesh should be comfortable and of a wicking synthetic (such as polypro, Capilene, or Thermax); or use wool, silk, Spandex, Lycra, or other similar synthetic materials (preferably not cotton). Don't wear sweat pants or jeans if it is very cold. Larry The Cable Guy outfits are not smart for winter hikes. In your back pack, bring toilet paper with a zip lock bag and a pack of baby wipes, since most of our hikes are in areas where there are no public restrooms or toilets. Yes, non-cotton base layers can cost much more than plain cotton-based garments, but they generally last a very long time as they are stronger than cotton. Non-cotton base layers are also lighter in weight than equivalent fabric garments. As noted, you want to wick moisture away from your skin, and they are more comfortable if you sweat. It is better to say, I don t need this as it is not that cold so I will just put it in my back pack, than it is to say, I wish I had what he is wearing, but I did not bring it. Stay safe, and enjoy the great outdoors. We will see you on the trail. What follows is the NWS wind chill chart that you can use to ascertain the real-feel temperature.
Wind Chill Chart Wind (mph) Calm Temperature (ºF) Frostbite Times minutes 1 minutes minutes Wind Chill (ºF) = T -.7(V.16 ) +.27T(V.16 ) Where, T= Air Temperature (ºF) V= Wind Speed (mph) Effective 11/1/1
