If there were an ORDER OF QUADRA award Steve Moore would get it! Thank you, Steve, for your dedication and love of humanity. Quadra Island is lucky to have you. Barbara Mindell Grateful I AM WRITING TO EXPRESS my very real gratitude to a lot of people who helped me through a medical emergency on Wednesday evening. Firstly, thanks to nurse Betty who came to my Quadra home at a minute s notice and tried very hard to overcome my emergency there. When it was impossible, she helped organize an ambulance crew (after the sailing of the last ferry). My thanks go to the Quadra ambulance crew who were so careful in getting me to the ferry and somehow worked to get a ferry to run for me so I could get to hospital. My thanks go to the ferry crew who stayed on to run an extra boat so the ambulance could get me to the other side. My thanks go to the Campbell River ambulance crew who were equally careful in getting me to the hospital. My thanks go to the team in the emergency unit who sorted out my medical emergency. My thanks go to my friend Bill who offered me a couch for the night in his Campbell River home after the hospital discharged me at midnight. And finally my thanks to my wife Amanda who was with me every step of the way. I can t thank you all enough, Peter Smith THE DI MAIL BAG Best Use of Land On Quadra Island A LONG TIME AGO THE FOREST industry logging, lumber mills and paper mills were the major industry in British Columbia. The logging operations were labour intensive, especially before the chainsaw took over, and the felled timber was hauled by horses and steam donkeys. That was the time when huge tracts of land were leased to large logging companies. There was virtually no tourist industry. A small number of sport fishermen came fishing for Tyee salmon, and a few big game hunters came to the Rockies. There was plenty of forest and there was, as yet, no conflict with tourism. Logging provided plenty of local jobs, and cutting forests and feeding it to sawmills and paper mills was the best use of forest land. This is no longer so. Cutting down forests wherever they grow is no longer the Best Use of Land. Previously, the fishing industry was badly damaged by logging sensitive areas near creeks and rivers. Today, cutting down forests wherever they grow will damage another industry tourism. The social role and local community importance of forestry has dramatically declined in recent decades. We know that here on Quadra, and they know it well in Campbell River. The harvesting of timber with huge machinery requires ever fewer workers. The efficient transportation of logs by trucks and log booms pushed around by tugboats also eliminates many jobs. More and more sawmills and pulp mills are closed in B.C. with masses of jobs eliminated forever. It is raw logs that are being shipped abroad. Local jobs and local payrolls are diminished in the forestry sector, so the social role and community importance of forestry has indeed declined. As I see it, on an island like Quadra that depends more and more on tourism, the cutting of forests on sensitive parts of the island is no longer the Best Use of Land. George Barabás Of Dogs and Sheep I LIVE ON SUTIL ROAD AT THE very south end of Quadra Island. Jill usually keeps a small herd of sheep which are kept enclosed and fed regularly at a small farm on the bend in the road. I noticed a part of an animal with a bloodied leg, one day a dead chicken outside the fence. This would not be a pack of wolves or a cougar which would make more slaughter. One day I noticed all the sheep were gone or moved somewhere else. Yesterday I asked Jill the shepherd why did she move the sheep? She told me an animal ripped a large hole in the fence, ate half of a lamb, attacked a two year old ewe and ripped out her udder of course Jill had to put the ewe down. This was done by a dog who is hungry, and is left loose to wander when it wants. What is the matter with people who cannot attend to their pets and let them run loose? Do dog owners know that if dogs are chasing deer or livestock they can be shot? I wonder if the dog owners care if their dogs are shot for such an offense? 5 ADVANCED DIRECTIVE Advanced Care Directive: An Introduction MONDAY, JUNE 8, 1 TO 3 PM QUADRA ISLAND BIBLE CHURCH (LOWER LEVEL) An advanced directive is a legal medical document in British Columbia that is a statement of an individual s wishes regarding ongoing medical care should they be in a situation where they are unable to speak for themselves. This is used in circumstances both in hospital and at home to assist health practitioners and family members to make important decisions regarding care of the individual that is consistent with their values and philosophy. While everyone should have an advanced directive regardless of age, it becomes more important as we enter our senior years. Join Pat Peterson, Family Nurse Practitioner, and Betty Doak as we attempt to simplify this document. Materials and references provided. Please register with Betty Doak at To help get you started please read the Frequently Asked Questions provided in the link below before attending the workshop. t?assetid=d8bbe47f331f428b87a5afac 862D0B75&filename=faqadvancecareplanni ng.pdf Writing Your Advanced Care Directive MONDAY, JUNE 22, 1 TO 3 PM QUADRA ISLAND BIBLE CHURCH (LOWER LEVEL) This workshop is intended for those who have attended the introductory session on Advanced Care and have given some thought to what they would like to put into their document. Our goal: a document that is ready for signatures. Join Betty Doak and Pat Peterson, Family Nurse Practitioner, who can offer some suggestions as to how to get down on paper what is in your head. We will do a brief recap of the advanced care documents, then open the floor to questions and answers related to kinds of care available and your right for refusal. Please give some thought to what is important to you and your health, what kinds of care you would like to receive, as well as why you would want to refuse care and in what circumstances. The document below may be of assistance and we recommend you view it prior to the workshop. 8 REGIONAL DIRECTOR S REPORT by Jim Abram Another beautiful, sunny day for us to enjoy! We must be doing something right (I hope!). I am just going to dive into this since I have a lot of issues to bring to your attention and little time to do it in. I am already past deadline! First of all, coming back from a holiday is a nightmare with all of the things that have piled up. I am still a long way from catching up, so please be patient. Mayday Wow! What a day...117th Mayday and still going strong with a huge crowd and great weather. The highlight of course was the dedication of the 2015 Mayday to Sandy Spearing, our beloved coordinator of the Community Centre for 29 years. We wouldn t have the recreation program and facility on this island that we have now without Sandy. And she has announced her retirement! I wish her all the best in her next projects, whatever they may be. She has been an invaluable asset to me and the community and the Regional District for all of these years. We will miss her! Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) I will be attending this annual meeting in Edmonton, this year to learn from my colleagues Sandi Spearing, photo by Don Mottershead across the country and to share our experiences. I already have meetings lined up with Federal officials including BC candidates in the next election and Justin Trudeau to talk about the absolute need to get our ferry system back into the Ministry. The FCM policy wholeheartedly endorses this position in their policy papers. Communications (Internet, cell/data, phone) will also be high on my priority list. will step up and represent us in my absence. For those of you following the ferry issue that effects all of our lives, you have probably noticed that we have kept it alive in the media on an almost daily basis. This issue is not going to go away until we win. Recall There is a huge effort taking place right now in Burnaby North to prove that a Liberal MLA can be recalled. If any of you have friends or relatives that want to help our cause and that live in the lower mainland, please see if they can help out with the work. Go to: recallburnabynorth@nationbuilder.com or you can call me for more details. They need help as they only have two weeks left to gather signatures. Let s make this work and prove to the Liberals that they are not untouchable. Recycling The Comox Valley Regional District Solid Waste function has been pressuring me for over a year to drastically change our recycling efforts here on Quadra. I have flat out refused much to their consternation. I finally forced a meeting with all of their top brass and invited our SRD CAO and my Alternate Director and facility operator to attend on site yesterday.. after an hour of discussion they left with a new outlook and are going to see if they can make my demands work, along with having the new private corporation that looks after recycling pay for the transportation to boot. That will save us about $25,000 per year. We ll see what happens. RCMP I met with the RCMP also yesterday about issues on Quadra. There are very few major issues. They informed me of their focus for the year and also gave me a second letter for the institution of a dog bylaw for Quadra. This discussion has been going on for more than a year. I now have two letters from two different heads of our detachment requesting the SRD to put a bylaw in place so they can enforce rules more effectively. The SRD is looking at this in this next year. The public (even the dog owners) and the Safety Council have been asking for this for some time. So it is time to at least look at it. Marine Area Planning Partnership There was a press release in the last DI announcing that this massive three year exercise was comp[let and signed off. What they forgot to mention was the valuable input from Local Government (5 of us in total over the years). I was there on your behalf for the entire time and got many things included that the Fed s and Province would have rather ignored. Another Ferry Rally On June 11, in Parksville, there will be a visit by Christ Clark at a function there. Big time organization is taking place as I write and I am hoping the some car pooling will be arranged to have a Quadra contingent there. I only know that it is in the morning and I will update on FaceBook as I hear more. This is a multi issue rally and it will be big time and lots of media. Gather those signs and songs! I am unable to attend due to chairing two Board meetings that day, so I am hoping you Local Area Plan - Seniors I will be meeting with our CAO and seniors in the next month to really get moving on the much needed seniors facilities and other housing needs in our community. Funding has always been an issue and our CAO, in discussion with me, has agreed to look at creative ideas on how to get past this barrier. More to follow. PAGE 8 ISSUE 603 MAY 29, 201 5

9 Communications The SRD has adopted Connectivity and cell/ data as a Strategic Priority and I plan to make the most of this to press the issue for Area C. We will be meeting with high level officials at the industry, provincial and federal level, including the CRTC in the near future. So wish us luck. We are going to put the fullcourt press on all of them. Tyee Plaza parking This came up while I was away and it means that there will no longer be overnight, free parking in the Plaza in CR. This is unacceptable and I am pursuing it with the necessary parties, who will remain nameless at this time.. I am hoping for a meeting on Thursday in CR and will keep you up to date. Ambulance / Ferry issues I have run out of time and space, so please read the CR Mirror this Wednesday for details. I think I need to stop here, so I can get this to press. Feel free to call me between the hours of 8:30am and 7pm, Monday through Friday (please, not on weekends, folks!) at , or you can fax me at or you can me anytime at jimabram@xplornet. ca or reach me by mail at Box 278 in the Cove, V0P 1NO... or on Facebook at If it is important, my cell is Lots of choices. Please do not use my residential phone number for SRD calls. All business calls should be on Many thanks! Respectfully submitted, Jim Abram Director, Discovery Islands - Mainland Inlets (Area C), SRD RCMP REPORT ON MAY 21ST, 2015 QUADRA RCMP received a report of a 31 ft trimaran stolen from Heriot Bay. The sail boat with the name Celebrity 2 is older and has no mast. It is white and blue on top and red on the bottom. If you have any information please contact the RCMP or Crimestoppers. On May 25th, 2015 Quadra RCMP received a report of mischief that occurred at the docks in Squirrel Cove. During the weekend some boats were taken for joy rides and minor damage was reported. Police are investigating but if you have any information please contact the RCMP. Cpl. Kevin Christensen, Quadra RCMP TAKE TIME FOR TAKE TEN Take 10 Quadra Island s Festival of Short Plays is drawing closer and the excitement is building! From Friday June 12 through Sunday June 14, our entertaining island will host this inaugural festival of delectably diminutive drama. THERE S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE... Friday, June 12: Adult Amusement (from card sharks to cowboys), Quadra Community Centre, doors at 6:30pm Saturday, June 13: Dinner and Drama (3 yummy courses plus 3 funny plays), Heriot Bay Inn, doors at 6pm Sunday, June 14: Family Friendly (fun for kids in the audience and on stage) Quadra Community Centre, doors at 1:30pm The plays will include those by well-known writers such as David Ives and Christopher Durang, as well as scripts from our own Quadra scribes (Michael Redican, Allen Perkins, Doni Laird, Darcy Mitchell and Chris Thompson). Take 10 has great promise to become an annual event that will engage islanders and entice visitors. What a terrific way to kick off the tourism season and share the benefits with local businesses and tourist outlets. As Lois Taylor attests, The Heriot Bay Inn is intertwined with the community in many ways; we have partnered with community groups in a variety of successful co-operative events. The HBI has co-founded the July Festival of Chamber Music, the October Mushroom Festival and now... the June Take Ten Quadra Island s Festival of Short Plays. These mini festivals bring off-island revenues and prosperity to the community. The many entertaining and interesting activities draw our lovely local supporters, as well as the touring public, into enjoying good times on the Island! As Co-chair of the Theatre Quadra Steering Committee, Linda Lolacher adds, Theatre Quadra is excited to see that Take 10 is attracting a wide variety of enthusiastic volunteers to participate as actors, scriptwriters Above: Barb Lee, Emma Arps, and John Nursall and behind-the-scenes assistants, which is exactly what we encourage and promote. We are creating a fun-filled weekend that will bring out the considerable talents we have on Quadra, and we re confident the event will be embraced by our local audience and will delight our visiting vacationers. So come out to indulge in the drama, escape in the entertainment, and support the island arts scene! Tickets for all events are available through the Heriot Bay Inn by calling Savings can be had by snatching up early bird ticket pricing available until May 31, or by purchasing a package pass which includes all three events for $60. 10 WASTE NOT Comox Valley Waste Management Centre Begins Phase 1 of Landfill Closure WORK WILL BEGIN LATER THIS MONTH on the phase 1 closure of the landfill at the Comox Valley waste management centre as adopted in the 2013 solid waste management plan (SWMP). According to the SWMP, the Comox Strathcona waste management (CSWM) service is required to begin closing the existing Comox Valley landfill in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prevent environmental impacts. The closure of the landfill supports environmental compliance regulations that address landfill leachate and landfill gas management. The existing landfill will be replaced with a new engineered landfill slated for construction in The landfill closure project is a large, complex capital project with an aggressive spring fall 2015 construction schedule. The initial construction work requires areas of the landfill that have reached final capacity to be graded and capped with an impermeable liner. The liner controls water from entering into the landfill, which in turn protects the quality of the groundwater. In addition, a landfill gas collection system will be installed to significantly reduce the release of greenhouse gas emissions and to also decrease odours from decomposing waste. On the access road leading to the Comox Valley waste management centre, visitors will also notice the cutting of trees, allowing for the excavation and construction of a large storm water infiltration pond. The purpose of the pond is to collect and temporarily store storm water and surface water draining from the closed landfill slopes and other areas of the site. The SWMP that received approval from the Ministry of Environment in May 2013 J EMERGENCY SUPPORT SERVICES Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness QUADRA S EMERGENCY SUPPORT Services (ESS) recently held an Awareness Fair at the Community Centre. I would like to thank everyone who participated, sponsors, volunteers and guests alike. From those I spoke with, consensus clearly indicates that given a region wide catastrophic event, help from the outside won t arrive on Quadra anytime soon. This explains the buzz around the Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Program (NEPP) table throughout the Fair. As a follow up, a series of presentations will be coming to a neighbourhood near you in the not too distant future to further explain the concept. We may be asked to evacuate our homes due to a disaster, but what if there isn t anywhere to go? Arguably the cornerstone of ESS, NEPP s objectives are simple: to includes a long-range vision for residual waste management for the CSWM service based on two regional lands (one in the Comox Valley and the other in CR). provide the information, training and skills necessary for individuals and neighbourhoods to be self-sufficient after a disaster. Quadra has been broken into 10 zones. Some already contain local response units including team leaders, first aid, fire suppression, communications and rapid damage assessment members. Other zones have no one. But given the overwhelming interest, our ability to build a strong Island-wide NEPP exists. But it all starts with you looking after your family first. Storing enough supplies outside of your house to last your family for a minimum of 72 hours provides a level of confidence in your family s ability to be self-sufficient. 11 ANNUAL STUDIO TOUR JUNE 6 & 7 Quadra Island artists and craftspeople will be opening their studios and workshops for the 13th Annual Studio Tour on June 6 & 7 to show their new work. This premier event features an extraordinary and eclectic range of talents from world-class fine arts to highly collectable crafts. Quadra Island is renowned for its friendly community of artists who generously open their workspaces and share their knowledge with the public. From sculptors to potters, every studio provides a unique opportunity to experience the island s diverse creativity. Tour the studio workshop of Kevin Mackenzie whose unique metal art and furniture are inspired by west coast landscape and wildlife. William Van Orden has developed a unique technique for creating extremely accurate renditions of sea life. His quest is to create a permanent threedimensional record of every fish found along the Pacific coast. At the north end of the island, savour homemade ice cream while sculptor Lee Gass demonstrates his techniques of rock carving with hand tools. Explore more than 20 other working studios nestled amongst the natural beauty of Quadra Island. Enjoy meeting and chatting with the many artists and craftspeople on the tour. Watch in-studio demonstrations and see the displays at the Community Centre where you can also view a sampler group exhibition, win door prizes, have a delicious lunch at Chef Mariana s A Muse Eats, and place a bid in the Silent Auction on one of three beautiful pieces created and generously donated by John Schevers. Tickets are $5 per person (kids under 12 are free) and are available from: Quadra Island: Info Centre, Hummingbird, most resorts Campbell River: Art Gallery, Info Centre, Impressions Courtenay: Comox Valley Art Gallery For more information: www. quadraislandarts.com. Kevin Mackenzie William van Orden Kathryn Manry Studio Tour Silent Auction The Quadra Island Studio Tour takes place in early June, but starting on May 27th, a stroll past the Quadra Credit Union window will provide a tantalizing glimpse of what s to come. Three pieces, beckoning with rich colours John Schevers On the weekend of the Studio Tour John s paintings will be moved to the QCC and intriguing titles, will give passersby reason to pause for a closer look and a chance to place a bid and make one of these works their own! These three paintings, by Quadra artist and Studio Tour participant John Schevers, have been generously donated by the artist to be sold by silent auction during the Studio Tour on June 6th and 7th. Entitled West Gate, Physical Wisdom, and Spiritual Wisdom, the pieces were created using a transfer process with encaustic, which involves, among other things, transferring ink and imagery from vintage magazines, resulting in a highly textural and colorful abstraction. Born in Best, Holland and trained in graphic arts, Schevers travelled the world before settling on Quadra, where he has lived for the past 15 years. His passion for experimenting with various artistic media is evident in his studio and his works. As John describes his pieces, Each one develops through a process that is at once elemental, ancestral, and emergent. At the start of the Studio Tour, which runs from 10 to 5 on Saturday June 6th and 10 to 4 on Sunday June 7th, Schevers three works will be moved from the Credit Union to the Quadra Community Centre for viewing and bidding. A form will be attached to each piece and anyone interested in bidding can write their name and the dollar value of their bid on the appropriate piece (each will be sold separately). The winning bids will be announced at 4pm on June 7th, at which point the successful bidders can pay for and take away their pieces. Melissa Abram Studio Tour Seeking Storage THE DISPLAY MATERIAL USED at the Community Centre during the Studio Tour needs to find a new home. We are hoping someone will volunteer a dry, accessible spot for about 10 wooden folding panels. They take up appoximately 6' x 4' and pile up to about 6 feet high. If you can offer us a suitable spot, please call Kathryn at The island artists really appreciate offers of help with this! ISSUE 603 MAY 29, PAGE 11

12 QUADRA ISLAND S OUTDOOR PUBLIC ART QUADRA ISLAND S PUBLIC ART ENCOMPASSES everything from the quirky and curious to the inventive and brilliant. If you re making your way around our Island on the June 5 to 7, 2015 Studio Tour, or if you just want to explore the public art of Quadra Island, be sure to grab this handy guide to enrich your artistic and cultural exploration. For visitors coming off the Quathiaski Cove ferry, a logical place to begin is at STUDIO 11, which is located on your right as you leave the dock. Then go to the Cove Centre at the end of On Heriot Bay Road, across from the cemetary Quathiaski Cove Road and enter the large parking lot. At one end of the Centre, you ll discover the QI library, and our resident giant reading frog one of several well-crafted wooden sculptures on the island by Vinay Chafekar. The frog is entitled RRREAD IT, RRREAD IT, and earned Vinay a First Place prize at the annual Campbell River Driftwood Carving Competition. At the other end of the Centre is the newly erected Hockey Player. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that is true on Quadra as it is everywhere. On the south side wall of the Tru-Valu store is a painted mural that is one of the largest pieces of public art on the island. Walk along the mural to the back of the grocery store, and go a few steps down the the back alley and discover one of the more unique pieces of QI architecture: the Mushroom House. This is an amazing little place that has seating built in, as well as a fireplace. It is impressive. There are two artists (STUDIOS 9 AND 10) to consider nearby, and then head off to Quadra Island Community Centre on West Road. Here you can treat your senses to unique splashes of fine art created by several artists in one spot. Just outside the building you will find the well-tagged skateboard park, and to the east of the building, down a short trail stands another skillfully honed, hand-carved sculpture by Chafekar which is a beautiful tribute to the late Judy Leicester. Next, head north towards Heriot Bay. Along the way, you ll encounter STUDIO 16, and at the very end of West Road turn to the left at the ferry dock and park the car at the Heriot Bay Inn. A walk around the property is a treat for the eyes. Look for the whale mural painted on the oil tank, and check out the groovy Wall o Records! The Inn is an institution on Quadra Island. STUDIO 18 is nearby. Go south on West Road a short way and turn right on Cramer Road to see STUDIOS 17 and 19 TO 23. To see another sculpture also by Chafekar turn right on Antler Road and head down the hill, where you can park beside the dock. On the dock is a memorial carving in honor of the late Brian Stevenson. Turn right (west) on Cramer Road, follow the curve to the right and you will be on Hyacinthe Bay Road. Watch for the awesome Living Room Topiary on the left. As you cross Valdes Drive, Hyacinthe Bay Road becomes Bold Point Road, The Community Centre: tribute to Judy Leicester which leads to STUDIO 23. It s well worth the drive. Next on the itinerary is STUDIO 15. Return to Heriot Bay and head east on Heriot Bay Road. Consider a stop at Rebecca Spit Provincial Park where you can find a beautiful tribute created by Vinay Chafekar to four men who lost their lives in a plane crash in the waters of Sutil Channel. Take the first turn to the right after you enter through the park s yellow gate and stay to the right. A short road leads to a parking lot. A brief hike (5 to 10 minutes) towards the south will take you to the memorial. At the fork on the path, go towards the water on your left. You will discover a touching Topcliffe Road s Mailbox Cowboy testimonial to the four men, their families, and the community. Or if you prefer more exercise, park in any of the the several parking lots and walk to the north end of the Spit on one side and return on the other. There are many forest and beach trails to explore. The landscape often inspires blossoms of creativity as stones and driftwood become the building blocks for impromptu beach sculptures. Allow an hour or more. After leaving the park, turn left on Heriot Bay Road. If you want an out-of-the-way site, turn left on Milford Road and right onto Topcliffe. Watch on the right side of the road for the Cowboy Mailbox. Then return to Heriot Bay Road, turn left on Smiths Road and right onto Cedar Road to STUDIO 14. Watch Nuyumbalees Centre: the Dick family totems carefully and you will see the incredible floating yellow metal chain link fence posts that adorn the driveway of a house nearby. Find your way back to Heriot Bay Road, and turn left. Soon you will pass the Firehall and come to the Quadra Island cemetery. Across the street from the cemetery s north gate is a wooden sculpture in the fashion of those found on Easter Island. Continue to the fork in the road, and veer left onto Cape Mudge Road. This will lead to STUDIOS 1 TO 4 on Quadra Island s south end. If you feel like practicing your archaeology skills to find some ancient (2000 to 3000 year-old) public art, there is a petroglyph (boulder engraving) on the beach near the end of Petroglyph Road. Walk down the beach access PAGE 12 ISSUE 603 MAY 29, 201 5

13 AND THE STUDIO ART TOUR 2015 path. Turn to your left (north) and walk for about 185 meters (607 feet). With some luck, you will find the Sea-Wolf, a boulder that has pitting and grooves and a depiction of the sea wolf facing the water. There are many petroglyphs on the Island, but first check out STUDIOS 1 AND 2 on Sutil Road, and STUDIO 3 on Mahonia Lane. Follow the map to Studio 4 and then come back to Cape Mudge Road, turn left (north) and then left on We Way Road. Follow the road through the forest and around the curving, steep corner until you find Cape Mudge Village on the water facing Campbell River. This is a rich bed of indigenous culture and history. Travel slowly around the few roads at Cape Mudge to see totems and canoes and more. As you move about you will also see the old church, the graveyard, the newly renovated Place to Relax and the Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre. On the grounds of the Centre there are several petroglyphs, and beside the building is the Nuyumbalees Educational Centre which is often buzzing with activity. The history and art of the Kwak wala, Laich-Kwil-Tach and K omocks peoples are evident all around. The Centre is open every day from 10am to 5pm. There s more information online at www. museumatcapemudge.com. As you leave the village, turn left and travel along Green Road. Pause at Noble Road to decide your route. STUDIOS 5 TO 8 are all in this area. Then as you approach Quathiaski Cove Road, watch for a mural on the left, The Usual Suspects, painted by the much loved, recently departed Quadra Island artist Zoe Cassidy. Now just turn left on Quathiaski Cove Road and you re back to the ferry. Or turn to your right, and let s go around one more time! You never know what might be just around the bend. 14 HOODOO YOU DO...? Alberta Hoodoo Gypsy HBI Alberta gypsy blues duo Blue Moon Marquee hail out of the Dusty Hoodoos of the Alberta Rocky Mountain Badlands. Steeped in blues traditions, Blue Moon Marquee s music is uncluttered and unified, blues with a touch of alt-country, ragtime and swing. And while there are elements of jazz and European folk music within their sound, the blues is at the core. Blue Moon Marquee is on tour through BC in June. They re performing on Quadra Island on June 6. Jasmine Colette (the rhythm section) not only sings with an alluring and elegant voice and masters the stand up bass, but also keeps the swing with her feet by playing a kick drum with one foot, a snare and high hat with the other. A.W. Cardinal, with sharp eyes often hidden under the shadow of a faded black Hutterite hat, is soft spoken and warm natured, with a singing voice as thick and as black as coal smoke. Blue Moon Marquee s chemistry transcends the music itself and the music will surely make a lasting impression. After living and performing in Montreal and New York City in the jazz and blues scene, A.W. decided it was time to head home to the Rocky Mountains, and bought a Greyhound ticket as long as he is tall back to the great Canadian west to record the album Stainless Steel Heart. There, in the winter of 2012, A.W. met with Jasmine Colette, a hoodoo lady who has toured the bulk of North America over the last six years as a bassist, singer and a hoop dancer, performing with the likes of Paul Pigat, Tanya Tagaq, David Gogo, Madagascar Slim and Wyckam Porteous. Within two weeks they had recorded an album. Blue Moon Marquee was thus formed; ever since they ve been touring regularly across Canada. TWO SHY SIAMESE CATS NEED a special home that will help them discover the pleasure of life as pets. Maisie, the mom, is about six years old, and her daughter Daisie is about five. Both have blue eyes and sealpoint colouring. The cats grew up indoors, but mostly alone and are now being socialized in a Quadra Cat Rescue foster home. Their foster caregiver says: They have already become more sociable. They are clean and very quiet, lying still and watchful with feet tucked under, for hours at a time. Maisie is more relaxed now and lets me pat her with no fuss, and Daisie is now allowing me to pat her on her head if she s approached slowly. Both cats have been spayed, vaccinated, and had their teeth cleaned, so they are ready for that special home. If you can help, please or call Quadra Cat Rescue at CATS (2287), or quadracatrescue@yahoo.com. 16 ISLAND ADVENTURES QI OUTDOOR CLUB Trial and Human Error The crew of the Rafiki has been on a few forays already this spring: day trips out of Heriot Bay, weekend trips through Desolation Sound and a few nights over at Teakerne Arm. Our upcoming journey was looking like a fortnighter down to Comox and wandering back home up the Sunshine Coast. Like before every journey, anticipation had set in and the chomping excitement for the wind in our hair had begun. And, like every start, it was quite delayed. It all began while trying to fix an engine problem that wasn t bad, but promptly made much worse. And, of course, when that problem was fixed, another arose. It s a trial, being packed into an engine room (er, compartment) with your knees over your ears, reaching past your toes to a part you can t see, holding a greased bolt with precariously balanced gaskets and trying to look up while your head lamp is migrating ever downwards... I commend Aaron for his dedication. He turned a little blue around the lips and said some things I m sure he didn t mean, which was fair for the tumult of problems he was facing and the probable physical pain he was in. Alas, such is the life of a yachter! It s not all fun and sails, and it sure as heck isn t cheap! We paid a ghastly fee to get the part we needed shipped in a reasonable amount of time, for which we very much felt like guilty first-worlders, but it was either that or wait a month (you know what they say about excuses). Then to the matter of application. While an engine seems like a mechanical marvel all bundled up neatly into a nice tight unit, it also seems like an impossible maze crammed into absurdly tight spaces with insanely tight fittings impossible for a person of non-herculean strength to undo. That being said, one can (and must) look at an engine for each small piece it s made of, and tackle it logically and orderly (insert zen moment here; ignore the penetrating stench of diesel). Our ten inch height difference became decidedly recognized, and when our part arrived we traded places and I found myself tucked in behind the engine greased up to the elbows and Aaron holding the flashlight. Hopefully we can get this sorted soon, then cruise down the Sunshine Coast to soothe our aching backs!
