3 The Presidents Page G'day members and friends, Spring is in the air and the weather is warming up with expected temps to hit the 30's during this weekend. That means a few things are inevitable. The lawns will need to be mowed quite regularly. The Magpies are upset that yet again they didn't make the finals, so watch your heads as you are out and about. However in my mind I am thinking about my next trip and some things that need to be considered for this time of year. So, I have stocked the camping kit with a couple of hats, plenty of sunscreen and my sunnies. Of equal importance in trip planning for this time of year and the coming months is fire restrictions. We all love a campfire of an evening and often rely on it for cooking of some kind. Just be mindful that fire restrictions will come into play no later than December 15 in most areas. So an alternative method of food preparation may be required. If you re unsure, look it up online at: This site has all the relevant information. All that being said, enjoy your time in the bush! Last weekend a few of our crew lead by Craig went up to Lake Cobbler to do a few repairs on the hut. From all reports it was a great weekend and well attended. A big thanks to Craig for putting up his hand and doing the groundwork to see this project through from start to finish. As you are all aware our training weekend for 2015 is being held on the 16 th and 17 th of October. It will be headed up by Craig with help from the club instructors and experienced members. Always a great weekend, this time around will be no exception, so, if you re intending to attend, drop Craig a line and express your interest. Once again, thank you Craig. We need people to continually put their hands up to help out, lead trips and attend events. Without this, clubs in general just don't function. A quick update on my situation: I am progressing relatively well and am getting stronger each day. I am expected to make an almost full recovery by mid November, just in time to enjoy the festive season before going under the knife again mid January. In this short timeframe of somewhat normality, I plan to finish off my Patrol with it's new heart. So, fingers crossed, I may even be able to hit the tracks once or twice before the year concludes. I must say I am really looking forward to it! Stay tuned... Pres Wangaratta Four Wheel Drive Club Inc October 2015 Page 3

5 Meeting Minutes Wangaratta 4X4 Club General Meeting 8 th September, 2015 Present: As per attendance Book. Apologies: Damian O Connor, Fiona and Dave Van Zanten, Richard Rhodes, Paul Kelly. Guest Speakers: Craig Cheetham and Peter Burke gave a very practical and interesting demonstration and talk on Bush Welding with batteries. Not much extra to carry in the car on trips, and can be very important in some circumstances for the success of the trip. Very practical skill to acquire. Batteries are connected in series, i.e. Positive to negative. Need two batteries and that provides 24 volts, 3 batteries give you 36 volts. Extra resistance in the form of fencing wire demonstrated. Need to be careful with arc and not continue the arc too long as you can melt the battery terminal very easily. Peter prefers the 2.5mm welding rod to a smaller rod. Easier to control and arc. Can weld most things from exhausts to shock absorber mounts. Danger in watching arc welding so must use the appropriate helmet. Jumper leads used as the welding leads from the battery. Positive to the welding rod, negative to the metal being welded. Visitors welcomed: New Member David Thales acknowledged. Minutes of Previous meeting: Moved Monica French/Peter Burke that minutes of previous meeting be confirmed Carried. Thanks from Tom to Andrew Brown, for leading the ship while Tom incapacitated and ill. Tom feeling a lot better but still in recovery stage. Thanks for the cards and well wishes from members. Noel & Irene Ham s Maralinga trip: Met up with Stan and Bethne for the trip. Highly recommended trip for anyone interested in history. Maralinga site of the Atomic testing by the Poms in Australia. Biggest runway in the Southern Hemisphere. Took the Buckeby Stock Route. Nice Grotty little track and along the fantastic Gawler Ranges. Cooked scones in camp oven using Mulga wood and fed crew working on new toilet block as well who were very happy with the scones. Ranger unable to attend but gave them a map of the Aboriginal area north to Emu Mining area and were permitted to go anywhere. From Cook back along the Caravan track to Maralinga. Completed tour heading to Ceduna and Adelaide. Len Bradell found drinking water. Water soak was used by aborigines and the railways until some idiot decided to enlarge it. Blew it out with explosives and fractured the underlying clay and lost all water. Daisy Bates camped in the bush looking after aborigines for 19 years. She buried steel cans in the sand and planted Briars to prevent goats destroying her garden. Some cans still to be seen. Put on your list of trips. A very good experience. Meeting Closed: 21.32pm. 8 Cancer Charity Ride 2015 On the weekend of 18 th and 19 th September, the annual Cancer Charity Ride was held at Charnwood near Benalla. Burkey and Kate, Neville and Monica French, Val and Alyssa Hill and Graeme Martin met up at Swanpool at 7.30am Saturday morning. We travelled up to Golden Mountain where Graeme, Val and Alyssa were to spend the day. Photo: View from Golden Mountain After setting up the club marquee with refreshments the Burkes and French s made their way down to an allocated intersection to attend to traffic monitoring. Photo: Club Marquee The day was lovely but I kept chasing the sun to warm my toes as it was quite cool in the sun. Photo: Burkey and Neville putting bike on trailer There fortunately was only one incident where a bike had a flat tyre that was unable to be pumped up and its rider was quite sore from a minor collision with another rider. Burkey and Neville helped the rider to load his bike onto the trailer and they were both taken back to Charnwood. In the afternoon we were stationed at another intersection to continue our traffic monitoring with no incidences. Wangaratta Four Wheel Drive Club Inc October 2015 Page 8

9 We all had dinner at Charnwood then made our way to a lovely campsite nearby for the night. Val and Alyssa went home as Alyssa wasn t feeling too well. A nice little bonfire was started and we sat around it with a couple of drinks while going over the day s events. I found out that it was apparently freezing on top of Golden Mountain! So it was a case of superb views and arctic conditions or no views and milder conditions. Much as I love views, think I d go with milder conditions. Sunday morning we awoke to another lovely day and had breakfast at Charnwood. We discovered we were not needed for the day so Graeme said his goodbyes and headed back to Helene at their daughter s place in woop woop, while the French s and Burkes spent the morning travelling through the Bogies exploring new and old tracks before heading back to our respective homes. I would like to say a sincere thank you to those that put their hand up to volunteer their support for this weekend. Burkey and I greatly appreciated it. The Cancer Charity Ride was successful in exceeding last year s tally with a whopping $27,000 raised. Well done! Kate Burke Robyn and Les Maclean Have a Tale to Tell For those of you who would be doubters, especially our fellow travellers last year (Ian & Trish, Irene, Les & Robyn), we decided to send in the photos as proof. Those who have been there would recognise the camp spot we chose for the night Well 33. Lovely water here to replenish supplies & a campfire made it a great night on the Canning. We shared our fire with a father & his son who were also on the Canning. They surprised us by informing us that they too, were locals to our home area. Wangaratta Four Wheel Drive Club Inc October 2015 Page 9

10 OK we will have to come clean. We actually crossed the Canning at the Kunawaratji indigenous community coming from Marble Bar (WA) in the west. After fuelling up with both diesel & food & a lovely night at Well 33, we then headed east along the Kiwirrkurra Gary Junction Road (There are only a few indigenous communities on this road in these desert lands). Irene, we were disappointed that the Arts Centre at Papunya was closed. Then it was into Alice Springs to surprise a mate who was being inducted into the Trucking Hall of Fame. Jeanette & Allan Wallace Ed: A lovely addition to your original trip experiences thanks for sharing. Wangaratta Four Wheel Drive Club Inc October 2015 Page 10
