WHAT S NEW! July Wood Road Kings Cliffe Peterborough PE8 6XF wjvintage@lumsdon.eclipse.co.uk Welcome to the July 2015 Newsletter Welcome all to another edition of the WJVintage monthly newsletter. For many of you this time of year is when thoughts turn to getting away from it all for a week or two as we enter the main holiday period of the year. For me it s no such luck I m afraid, as my thoughts turn towards product development for the coming months as we head toward the busy autumn and Christmas period (did I really just mention Christmas in July??). I m pleased to report that this edition is crammed with new goodies in the What s New section below so I hope you will find one or two items that will be of interest. The one area that is quiet at this time of year is on show front. I have listed my shows for July/August in the See Us at Shows section but I m afraid there aren t that many. So if you need anything urgently please take a look at the website, which I will try to keep as up to date as possible so you know what I have available. If in doubt just drop me an or call and I ll do my very best to sort you out. On that note I will leave you to enjoy the rest of my ramblings. Have a great summer! Out and About Loughton (Essex Group) HRCA Meet, June 25 th This was a first visit to this meeting, held in Loughton, just a few miles away from where my mum lives in Chingford. So I was pleased to be able to combine visits to both and even an overnight stay with my mum. It was very nice to meet local organiser, David Southgate, who made me feel very welcome indeed. It was also nice to see one or two familiar faces and to put faces to names of one or two customers I had not previously met.
The hall is light and airy and quite easily accommodates a decent sized O Gauge layout as well as a couple of OO layouts. I was pleased to be able to test run one of the Seven Mill Models Ivatt Class 2 Mickey Mouse locomotives on behalf of a customer. It s modern and not Hornby but no-one batted an eyelid, except in admiration I m pleased to say. I will just mention the unsung heroes of many (if not all) our meetings. No sooner had I arrived at Loughton and started setting up, than I was approached by a very pleasant lady, who offered me a nice cup of tea, and who later returned to see if I would like a sandwich. What would we do without the catering ladies who so willingly give up their time for us? Three cheers for them I say hip, hip.. Northend (Cotswolds) HRCA Meet, July 6th Both the timing and theme of this meeting were perfect. The theme was goods and mail wagons and on the very morning of the meeting my first delivery of PO 7-plank wagons arrived from ETS, along with the prototype of a brand new SR USA Class Dockyard Shunter (See What s New below for full details). I have to say that, as usual the theme was very well supported across the two OO and larger O Gauge layouts. One member even created some brown paper wrapped parcels as loads for his wagons to cover both areas of the
theme in one! I was pleased to be able to join in with an appropriate train of my own. I also managed to take some movie footage of the USA Class and PO wagons and this I have uploaded to Youtube. If you click on the link below, or copy and paste it into your browser, you will be directed to it One sad bit of news from this meeting is that the Cotswolds group are going to have to find a new home at the end of the year. Northend Village Hall is in desperate need of some fairly major renovation work and has been deemed unfit for use. Richard has managed to secure the hall for a few more months but in the longer term it will be closed. How long the work will take is anyone s guess as the cost will be quite significant and funds will have to be raised. In the meantime the search is on for a similar venue in the general area around Northend/Southam. More on this as and when I hear anything. Away Day They say familiarity breeds contempt and so I think we often tend to overlook places of interest that may be on our doorstep. A few months ago I arranged to meet a customer at Stamford Station to deliver some purchases to him. Stamford in Lincolnshire is just 8 miles from Kings Cliffe and is my nearest big town for shopping, fuel, take-aways etc. After our meeting and a spot of lunch my customer told me he was going to spend the rest of the afternoon wandering around the town. It suddenly struck me what a good idea! Stamford is one of the UK s finest stone built towns and has been used for location work on many a period drama, both TV and film. It is actually a really beautiful place and well worth a visit. So what can you expect if you decide to go for an Away Day to Stamford?
Well first things first, and of course as a railway enthusiast you will arrive at the station. This is a fine old stone building designed by Sancton Wood in a mock tudor style and with clear influences from the nearby Burghley House. It first opened in March 1848 and at that time was known as Stamford Town to distinguish it from the now closed Stamford East station. The station was originally opened by the Midland Railway on its Syston and Peterborough Railway and services operated from Peterbourough Stamford Leicester. In June 1851, the LNWR opened a single line from Rugby Market Harborough. This then joined the Midland line at Luffenham from where trains made their way to Stamford where they terminated in a dedicated LNWR bay, the now disused and filled-in platform 3. Today the majority of passenger services are operated by Cross Country as part of their Birmingham to Stansted route. From Stamford there is generally an hourly service each day towards Leicester and Birmingham New Street westbound and Peterborough, Cambridge and Stansted Airport eastbound. Before you leave the station, you would be well advised to spend some time in Robert Humm & Co s Transport Bookshop. Located in what was the old station master s house, the business specialises in rare and out-of-print books about railways, other transport and industrial history. They also stock a wide selection of new books on railways and you could easily while away an hour or more just browsing through shelf after shelf of all manner of fascinating railway literature.
Then drag yourself away from the books and wander down towards the town. The market town of Stamford sits astride the river Welland and boasts over 600 listed buildings in the town centre, including 5 medieval churches. Amongst its streets and narrow alleyways you will discover all manner of small independent shops (as well as one or two of the larger chain outlets), an abundance of restaurants and cafes, plus the Arts centre with its 1786 theatre, the Steam Brewery, Browne s Hospital and the 12th century ruins of St Leonard s Priory. About a quarter of a mile out of town is Burghley House, the superb Elizabethan stately home, famous for its horse trials and also the backdrop for many a period drama. It is open to the public between March and October and both the house and grounds are well worth a visit. If you bring your other half with you, I believe a visit qualifies you for six months of brownie points towards any train related activities and/or purchases. I could go on but this is a newsletter not a travel guide! If I have whetted your appetite in any way, why not buy your own Away Day ticket to Stamford and come and explore for yourself. And if there is anything you would like to purchase from yours truly, then naturally I will be only too pleased to offer my personalized delivery service (by prior arrangement of course)
What s New? Southern Railways USA Class Dockyard Shunter Coming soon! I am delighted to be able to announce the launch of a superb new locomotive from ETS. Here is a sneak preview of this brand new coarse scale O gauge release due by the end of this summer. Prototype USA Class in Southern Black livery It s a Southern Railways USA Class Dockyard Shunter. These US designed and built S100 class locos were shipped to the UK in 1943 to be used throughout Europe following the D-Day Invasion. When fighting ended in 1945 the Southern Railway bought a quantity of 15 that were unused and adapted them for use on the British Railway system, in particular in and around Southampton Docks. They later went into BR service, with several remaining in use until the end of steam on the Southern Region in1967. This superb new model will be produced by ETS in Prague and will be available in the UK exclusively through WJVintage and Raylo. Suitable for both 2- and 3-rail use, initial production will be limited to a total of just 100 locos across 3 liveries - SR, BR early crest black and BR late crest malachite green. Computer generated images of the BR (early crest) Black and BR (late crest) Green variants
RRP is expected to be plus P&P for all variants. If you would like to pre-order one of these highly limited locomotives please me at or call First deliveries are anticipated in September Class 03, BR Diesel Shunter Also due for release over the summer months is a superb new release from Seven Mill Models. This workmanlike loco once again combines the expertise of ETS and DJH Engineering to bring you a unique ready to run, coarse scale O gauge Diesel Shunter. Prototype Class 03 Diesel in BR Green with wasp stripes Designed for both 2- and 3-rail operation, this fabulous new release will be produced as a very limited edition of just 50 models in total across 3 liveries as follows: BR Green, BR Green with wasp stripes and BR Blue with wasp stripes
Featuring super smooth running via the acclaimed ETS clutch driven mechanism and amazing detail of the DJH bodywork and ancillaries, the price will be plus P&P and these will be available exclusively through WJVintage and Raylo. These should be available in August. If you would like to pre-order one of these highly limited locomotives please me at or call Private Owner Wagons The first batch of these colourful Private Owner Wagons are now in stock and I have been furiously working my way down the list of pre-orders. If you have pre-ordered and I haven t been in touch yet, I will be shortly and apologies for the delay. Working on my own on admin, picking and packing does take time but I am getting there, and don t get me wrong, it is a good problem to have! Bass Beer Cadbury Colman s Mustard Huntley & Palmer I do still have stock of each of these colourful wagons which feature insulated wheels for 2- or 3-rail use and cast brake gear. You can order now and they are priced at each plus P&P PO Wagons Series 2 Colliery Wagons Series 2 is already well in development and I had hoped to publish more specific information this month. Unfortunately, with everything else going on over the past weeks, time has eluded me. I will give a detailed update next month but I can tell you I am working on 8 liveries from collieries based all around the UK, so this will hopefully mean there is something for everyone. I do still plan to have these available for the autumn so watch this space! PO Wagon Accessories Brakes One of the things that sets the new PO Wagons apart from recent releases by Bassett-Lowke is the addition of braking gear. So I now propose to offer the brake parts as an accessory. These will come as a full wagon set, including screws and instructions, and they will be a perfect fit to upgrade any of your modern production (Corgi/Hornby) Bassett-Lowke wagons. This will entail drilling a couple of small holes in the wagon for a permanent fit, but I will also include instructions for a simpler fit using double sided tape. Not as permanent but will do the trick. Each wagon brake set will be priced at just 5.00 plus P&P Availability should be late July/early August
Coal Loads Another much requested accessory for the PO wagons is a coal load. ETS are just in the process of producing a prototype load for evaluation and as soon as it has been costed I will offer it for sale. It would be interesting to hear from you if you think you would be interested is some of these loads. More on this next month. Hopper Wagon Update Due to holidays there is no real update from ETS on production at the moment. I would now anticipate September for delivery. Many thanks for your pre-orders to-date on these. All four wagons appear to have been well received which is great. Here are the Series 1 Hopper wagon liveries: London Brick Ministry of Transport NE LMS The projected price for the Hopper Wagons is each plus P&P. You are still most welcome to place a pre-order. These will be highly limited although exact production numbers have not yet been decided but will be in the order of only 50 to 100 of each livery/scheme. They will be available exclusively through WJVintage and Raylo.
Ivatt LMS/BR 2F/2P, 2-6-0, Mickey Mouse The full range of these superb Ivatt Class 2 Mickey Mouse locos is now available, with the BR Green lined almost sold out (please call to check availability on this one). Here is a table showing all schemes and running number options: LMS Plain Black X X BR Plain Black BR Mixed Traffic (Lined) Early crest Early crest Early crest Early crest BR Mixed Traffic (Lined) Late crest Late crest Late crest Late crest BR Green (Lined) X X Remember, there are only 100 pieces being produced in total, across all the schemes and running numbers. To avoid disappointment do please order as quickly as possible. The price for plain (non-lined) BR/LMS versions is each plus P&P and for lined BR versions is each plus P&P. I am of course happy to accept your pre-orders for any of these items now.
2-Rail adapter pick-ups for Corridor Coaches are also now available. They are priced at each (Plus P&P) and comprise a complete new 2-Rail bogie to replace the 3-Rail Pick up bogie included with the original sets Also Available BL99024 Class A3 Pacific Flying Scotsman BR green lined (with smoke deflectors) plus P&P ( for UK) I have been lucky enough to uncover yet another of these much sought after Bassett-Lowke locos in brand new and unused condition It features the post-war smoke deflectors and corridor tender. It is one of a limited edition of only 250 pieces. This particular model is number 102 as denoted by the brass plaque on the fall plate. The model is supplied complete with lamps and operating instructions. I have tested the model on my rolling road and can confirm it is another very smooth runner indeed. These are becoming very difficult to find now, particularly in new, unused condition such as this example.
