Welcome - New Members & Guests - There were no guests or new members. Minutes - Last Meeting - It was noted that the "Show & Tell" portion of the March 2018 Minutes were in error with respect to the presentation made by Member Pete Luks. A message with the correct information was sent out by Dennis Vollrath, News Letter Editor. Motion made & seconded to make the message an addendum to the March 2018 Newsletter, Show & Tell Section. Motion approved. Reports President - Jim Litwin commented that after our last meeting, he took our thoughts about the new compost site construction (Lower fence; openings in the fence; grass between our field and the fence; sign locations; and Monday as the possible future compost site day) to DPW Foreman, Mark Benish, and Mark was receptive to them. Jim thanked Roger Nickolaus for making a new "Missing Pilot" board for the club. Our old one was out of space for any additions that might be needed. Vice President - Roger Nickolaus had nothing to report. Secretary / Treasurer - Bill Flannery was una- 1

2 ble to attend the meeting - No report. Safety Officer - Dan Pozel had nothing to report other than for members to be safe walking & driving in today's icy snow storm. Field Chairman - Darrel Hossalla reported that the "Weed & Feed fertilizer has been purchased, and the mower & tractor are now running, so the field will be rolled when conditions allow. Newsletter Editor - Dennis Vollrath had nothing to report. Several copies of the last Newsletter available for anyone needing one. Tractor Chairman - Eric Armantrout unable to attend meeting due to working because of the snow storm. It was reported that he repaired a tire on the mower; got all the equipment running; and moved the equipment around so the tractor can be gotten out first for field rolling. Compost Director - Jerry Rose reported that the compost site is now open. Members are reminded that they should be wearing the safety vests that are in the compost site shelter when working the site. Only a few people have not yet signed up and assignments will be now be made. Web Master - Our new Web Master was unable to attend the meeting. He sent a text message reporting that he had the flu. He had met with Bob Houin and the transfer of information and data had taken place. They are in the process of switching server sites. Old Business - There was no old business to discuss. New Business - Jim Litwin brought up the topic of a newer member wanting to become an instructor so he could teach his son to fly. Member Matthew Holl would like to become an instructor so he can teach his son, Lucus to fly. Matthew had inadvertently been teaching Lucus to fly and was unaware that he needed to be officially named an instructor. Safety Officer Pozel had also been observing Matthew's flying abilities, and concurred that this move would be appropriate. Motion made and seconded to name Matthew Holl an instructor. Motion approved. New Pilots - No new pilots. Poor weather. Show & Tell - Dennis Vollrath showed his new Horizon Hobbies RV4 airplane. He has set it up to fly as an electric (obviously) and showed some of the unique features. One problem he had to deal with was a VERY difficult access to the wing bolts and their location. Dennis made a custom wire tool to get at the bolts and crank them into place. There was a discussion about his "Voltsagger" meter and how it worked. This was followed up by a brief discussion (for the newer members) of the strengths of A123 batteries over others. Larry Petricek showed a metal "Air Plane" Hanger" sign he picked up. Nice sign for the den or work shop area. Raffle Drawing - There was no raffle drawing. Close Meeting - There was motion to close the meeting and seconded to adjourn. Next meeting is on Sunday, May 20, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the RC Field 2

3 JIM'S CORNER Spring has finally arrived. Sunny skies, green grass and dandelions popping up. The field is in good shape. As I write this article, the field has been rolled 3 times, grass cut once, and the "Weed & Feed" has been applied. The "Clean Up" day went well with 13 members showing up. All the tree branches and gravel removed from the grass, and the wood pile restacked and covered. As you bring your planes out from winter storage, I strongly advise you to check them out for any needed repairs or adjustment. Batteries can go bad, and clevises can have stripped threads or broken pins. CRITICAL ISSUE FROM OUR COMPOST DIRECTOR Gentlemen, Now that we are a month into a new year of 2018 compost year, I would like to thank you all that have spent time at the compost site and the people that will still do the same. We have received a call from Mark Benish, who is in charge of the compost site for Mount Pleasant. He informed us that when he had stopped out at the compost site to see how things were going, he observed a large truck dumping wood chips. He also notice that there was a load dumped earlier. He confronted the driver and then confronted the attendant (our club member) and asked if the driver gave a coupon to the attendant. He also asked the attendant if he had asked the driver for a coupon and the answer was no. Nothing has yet occurred with the proposed compost site expansion, nor do we yet know what kind of crop the farmer is going to plant around our field. At our next club meeting on Sunday, May 20th, we will be discussing and confirming a date for the shelter tear down, which probably will be on Saturday, May 2nd. Get out and start enjoying the field! Fly Safe & Have Fun. Jim Litwin President These coupons must be collected from the contractor or lawn service, dated and placed in the building where they can be picked up by Mount Pleasant. If you see a truck with a lawn care type trailer (Mowers, trimmers, etc. on it) or a larger truck with waste material, ask if they are a contractor, and ask for an address if they claim to be a home owner. Contractors doing work for Mt. Pleasant residents still need a contractors coupon. Mount Pleasant will post more information in the building. Gentlemen, please remember that this is how we keep your flying site. The club has been blessed with great members and a great flying site; keep up the good work. 4 Dennys Stuff Bad Week Many of the RRCC membership is aware that your editor got hit with a bad case of food poisoning on May 8, with a visit to the ER on May 9. It was potato salad from the local gro- Dennys Stuff - Deans Connectors Our VP had another Deans connector failure involving its use on our VP s A123 battery pack for one of his gas airplanes. Roger was using the Deans connector for high current charging of his receiver pack, but his Cellpro 10xP charger was showing no connection to his battery pack. It took a bit of investigation to determine what was wrong. The field tests showed that it was the Deans connector, with an open circuit on its positive terminal. Your editor has shied away from making recommendations on some items, but this is the 4th Deans failure in our club. These Deans connectors were a very good connector when they first came out years ago. They were reliable, compact, fairly inexpensive, and could handle around 50 Amps or so. But, the counterfeiters showed up, and the quality control of those counterfeiter Deans connectors leaves a lot to be desired. What s worse, it is nearly impossible to determine whether your connector was in fact made by Deans, or whether it is a counterfeit. For receiver power, or even for electric model airplane power connector use, unfortunately the current Deans connectors cery store. I ll never know for sure, but that salad was purchased, left in the car for 30 minutes while eating at a local restaurant. I m finally showing improvement, but had to cancel out going to Joe Nall. It just wasn t safe to travel 900 miles and deal with hot weather in a weakened condition. can cost you an airplane. So, what are good connectors? The Anderson Power Pole connectors are very good, but they require a special $40 crimper to install the wire into the pins. But, there is no soldering involved. The various cylinder type connectors are very good, such as the EC5 and so on. But, they require soldering, and are difficult to reuse. (I ve found that gently heating up the plastic housing on these EC5 connectors with a heat gun allows pushing out the connector pin with a drift without causing to much damage to the plastic housing.) For real high currents such as that pulled by my 4500 Watt Corvus whose motor pulls 125 Amps, the Castle Creations 6.5 mm connectors are top of the line. They show little change after over 100 flights. Canopy Glue Many of our RC members have used canopy glue on their models. And if you re like me, have had it run all over the canopy and the model itself. Next time you are in Home Depot, look for E6000 adhesive. This stuff is transparent, sticks to everything and comes out as a gel. It stays where you put it. I used it to replace the plastic dome on my riding lawnmower gas tank cap. After a month, it is still solidly attached. 4

5 Dennys Stuff Kit Planes magazine Your editor used to buy this magazine from the Greenfield News and Hobby while they were still open. It is an interesting magazine. The two most recent issues covers epoxy materials and where they are used in airplane construction. I never knew that these epoxy compounds come in so many different varieties. The latest issues cover a guy building an old replica full scale airplane that needed a big radial engine. The engines current- ly available are 50 or more years old, are expensive, and their reliability is questionable. The article author covers his trip to Asia to a company building brand new 9 cylinder radial engines. The article and photos are very interesting. Another article covers a guy who flew around the world on his aircraft, discussing the big problems he ran into. That included the Antarctic. I ll be dropping off these magazines at the club house for reading material in the future months. 5

Middle right is the model that got hit by interference and piled into a farmers manure pile. Not a mark on the model, but it was a total loss! Bottom left is an Enya 35 engine powered model. Bottom right was a giant sailplane model given to me, but I in turn gave it to someone else. 6
