1 JUNE 2010 NEWSLETTER CELEBRATING OUR 24th YEAR Jeff Hunter, Editor Pro Tem The next Monthly shoot is Club Championships on 6/20. The next Saturday Shootout Series is Knickerbocker Tuneup on 7/31. MAY MINUET, MASHOMAK, & MOM Jeff Hunter When Charlie Conger invites you to shoot the magnificent sporting clays course at the very exclusive Mashomak Preserve, how do you say no? Travelers President, Al Anglace, took him up on the offer and scheduled May Minuet for Sunday, May 16 th. We also celebrated Ladies Day and honored the ladies in our presence. It was good to see an abundant group of eight lady shooters and a few more observers in our ranks. As my traveling companion and I were winding our way up through the Hudson Valley, we passed Dover Furnace, Ten Mile River Preserve, Tamarack Preserve, Nine Partners Pheasant Farm, Orvis Sandanona, Millbrook Rod & Gun, Mid- County Rod & Gun and made our way toward Mashomak in Pine Plains. The number of sporting opportunities in this area is staggering, let alone the dozens of private clubs that dot the landscape. You don t want to know how we passed them all, but it suffices to say GPS units aren t all they re cracked up to be. Mashomak did not disappoint. Station 1 was an omen for what was to come. A low and fast left to right
2 crossing bird that disappeared behind a berm was followed by a slow quartering in bird off a tower on report. This station was the ultimate test of hurry-up and wait as your adrenalin got pumping with the first bird but you had to patiently wait for the tower bird to come into range. To add insult to injury, it was four pair. Another presentation that was a case study of opposites was station 11. This was setup as a low quartering bird below your feet followed by a very high quartering bird from the left that was launched from behind the shooter. Dr. Joe Sproviero put on a clinic and bewildered us with his smooth gun movement as he dusted all four pairs. Then there was 14; an honest to goodness 40 yard crosser followed by a 50 yard quartering away bird. Us mere mortals without Muller Chokes had absolutely no chance. Yet, Andrew Perlman (a reformed Trap shooter) pulled out his U3 and came away with about half. Everybody commented on how much fun the course was. At the end of the day, Doug Robare took home the gold with an 85 and Sue Uliano was the top lady with a 60. Lunch and fellowship followed at Copperfield s in Salt Point before the crowd dispersed with hope that we will be invited back next year. 3 3 WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT BENEFIT SHOOT Jeff Hunter The Wounded Warrior Project is an organization that honors and empowers wounded warriors. The WWP helps to raise awareness and enlist the public s aide for the needs of severely injured service men and women. The folks at Vernon National Shooting Preserve hosted the Second Annual Wounded Warrior Project benefit shoot and clinic on the weekend of May 22 nd and 23 rd. Saturday, May 22 nd saw Dan Schindler, Dave Dobson, Tom Fiumarello, and Bonnie Kincaid of the Paragon School of Sporting on hand for a full day of instruction to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. Instructors were paired with four students each and we worked on specific presentations that each student was having trouble with. My instructor, Bonnie Kincaid, pushed us outside our comfort zone to try different things in order to break the target. Sunday, March 23 rd was the main event. Last year s WWP shoot brought out 90 shooters. This year s attendance shot up to 123 people of every skill level. It was nice to see a healthy contingent of Connecticut Travelers there; including Steve Monti, George Maggiolo, Steve Borst, and friends of the Travelers Mike Koneski and George Bartlett. The course was 100 targets over 14 stations. Vernon National has some varying terrain and they take full advantage of it. Station 14 was one of the decisive butts with a quartering in standard from 60 yards away launched across a ravine and a midi on report going down the ravine. Dan Schindler and Dave Dobson helped set the course and there was lots of visual trickery going on. Still, the shoot was won with a 91 which tells me that there were plenty of hittable targets. The shoot was attended by lots of local dignitaries coming out to support the cause. The hot breakfast of pancakes, eggs, homefries and other assorted goodies got everybody going right on time. After the shoot, there were several silent auctions to help raise funds for the cause. A BBQ Chicken dinner was served as the Liberty Bells performed patriotic songs and kept us entertained. The piece de resistance was an auction of Spice, an 8 week old Brittany Spaniel. George Maggiolo was about 3 seconds away from taking her home! Oh well, maybe next year George. Vernon National was a full four hours drive from Fairfield County, but the experience was worth the trip. I am already looking forward to next year s shoot!
JOISEY JUNKET Bob Schrager 4 If April showers bring May flowers, then May flowers bring Pilgrims? No, they bring thoughts about our fall 2010 trip, the Joisey Junket. There may be a lot of shooting between now and October, but it s time to mark your calendars to be sure that you block out this weekend. A reservation flyer will go out this summer. Our fall trip this year is to the land of Tony Soprano and Bruce Springsteen (to say nothing about Jenni JWoww Farley and Nicole Snooki Polizzi and please don t). The Connecticut Travelers travel to south New Jersey on October 1, 2 and 3, We start off Friday afternoon at M&M Hunting Preserve, Pennsville, NJ. I don t have to tell you about M&M, home of the 2011 U.S. Open. I m sure Anthony and Donna Matarese will have the traps humming for us. Saturday, we shoot morning and afternoon, with lunch in the clubhouse, at Cedar Creek Sporting Clays, Millville, NJ. This course winds its way through 75 acres of pinelands and open fields with two different target presentations at each of 16 stations. "A" cages are set for the fun shooter, while "B" cages are set for shooters looking for "tournament type" targets who want some serious practice. Knowing Joe Scull, there will probably be some FITASC targets for those who want some punishment during lunch. Sunday morning we return to Quinton Sportsman Club in Salem, NJ This sporting clays course features 18-stations with 29 different shooting positions. Stoned path walk-ways lead through their wooded course. The clubhouse offers breakfast and lunch. We shot there during the spring trip a couple of years back and every one who was there is looking forward to going back. Friday evening we will have cocktails and dinner at the Riverview Inn, savoring some fine dining combined with a spectacular view of the Delaware River. Saturday night we cross the bridge to Old New Castle and go to the Arsenal, The Arsenal was erected between 1809 and early 1811 as the threat of war with England became imminent. But don t worry, it s been remodeled since then and now is a spirited historic landmark restaurant serving traditional American fare with European influences. Before dinner you may enjoy a stroll on the cobblestoned streets of Old New Castle, a colonial town with a laid back attitude. We have rooms reserved at the Hampton Inn, 429 North Broadway, Pennsville, NJ ( ) at a special Ct. Traveler rate of $90.00 per night (double occupancy) which includes complimentary hot breakfast. First come, first serve. The cut-off date for accepting reservations into this room block is September 9, You can call the hotel and ask for the special Ct. Traveler rate. If you have any questions, contact Bob Schrager at robert@schrager.org or (if you must)
5 PS. For those who need some competition to get their blood going, several Travelers have let me know that on Sunday, October 3, Cedar Creek is having its Shoot for Glory; 100 sporting simos and/or a 100 bird FITASC shoot. As always, your option if you would rather shoot there. REMMINGTON REBATE Remington is offering a $2/box up to $100 rebate on STS and Nitro 27 Target loads. You can find more information and the link to the rebate form at Scott Moss of Forest & Field in Norwalk ( ), informs me that he has a regular supply of STS for $80 a flat. With the rebate, that s $60/flat!

Albeit bragging rights and a figurative posture among our membership, these earned honors are recognized as a pinnacle within the Sporting community as accomplishments beyond the norm. The 2009 version was the most competitive in many years as four of our best shooters were locked into an exciting shoot-off to determine the open champion. Chuck Devinne bested Jim Kline, Doug Moore and Jim Muller to repeat as the 2008 and 2009 Champion. Although we recognize the open champion there is heated competition within the classes and sub-classes for individual honors.
