The President s Corner Page 3 The rains stopped just in time to accommodate our annual picnic. Peggy and Jerry Cardwell hosted the event with 40 plus attendees at their very impressive red and white barn/house complete with outdoor pool on 40 acres of land, and situated next to an awesome, five-bay red and white garage. We had a short business meeting followed by barbecue from Buddy s and great side dishes and desserts provided by our members. The Mt. LeConte Jug Band provided great entertainment. The only downside was watching Georgia beat Tennessee in football. Kudos to Peggy and Jerry for a great outing. Just a week later we all gathered at the Airport Hilton for another No Meeting Breakfast. Yours truly finally won the free breakfast for the most attractive classic T-Bird, at least according to the newest server who apparently was partial to the color yellow. The following week saw several of us attend the Auto Fest at the Smokies baseball stadium. The featured marque was the Corvette with probably 15 to 20 in attendance. The Thunderbirds were lurking just across the road. Of note was our prime location courtesy of Bill Jurkonie, and our 4 popup tents where we all gathered for fellowship. Perhaps we will be able to be the featured marque at a future gathering. And the last event before the deadline was the Color Tour/Prison Tour. Thanks Alex for coordinating on his birthday! Good job and it was well attended in spite of the less-than-optimal weather. Rick Rawe If you haven t already voted in the CTCI Election of Director-at-Large and By-Laws revision, please do so before November 15th. If you did not receive a ballot via , please contact CTCI Office. EDITORS CORNER THE BIRD WORD publication is issued near the end of the EVEN-numbered month by The Smoky Mountain Classic Thunderbird Club. Send articles and items of interest to the Editor, Bill Long, at the address on the front page.

Page 5 A Event Report No Meeting Breakfast - October 6, 2018 The October No Meeting Breakfast took place on a chilly but sunny morning. Nine classic Birds showed up with their members inside, hungry and ready for a good breakfast. We were treated to another good breakfast, as is the norm, at the Airport Hilton. This Breakfast s free meal was won by our hard-working President, Rick Rawe. The hostess who made the selection just happens to have yellow as her favorite color. Our host Bev Hammond was unable to attend but arrangements were handled flawlessly. If you can make the next Breakfast (Saturday December 1), please let Beverley know so your meal can be ready for you. We will all hope for good weather. Don t forget to Vote your CTCI ballot! 6 Page 6 A Event Report Bill and Sharon Jurkonie hosted a 2-day car event at this year s Auto Fest for the Smoky Mountain Classic Thunderbird Club and the East Tennessee Region Antique Automobile Club. Nine members of SMCTC attended, bringing 4 classic Birds and 4 Retro Birds Will & Linda Cook 57 and 02; Bill & Sharon Jurkonie 57 and 04; Grace & Roger Phillips 56; Rick Rawe - 56; Denny Richardson 03; and Sylvia Witt 02. (Rick Rawe, Sylvia Witt and the Jurkonies are members of both clubs.) The Corvette was the featured car this year. Roger Phillips brought his 67 Vet and Bill Jurkonie his 84 Vet. Also in attendance was Sharon s son, Bill Shepherd, from Florida and Joe Shepherd & Barbara Bys from Wisconsin. All in all, we had a great group of car enthusiasts. In addition to almost 300 cars in the show, there was a display of antique tractors. Oh, to be young enough to spin the fly wheels to start them putt, putt, putt. Also, the local RV dealer had about a dozen RV s open for viewing. The biggest draw for the muscle cars was the Auto Cross track at the far end of the parking lot. Lots of fun to watch them try to beat last year s record time on the track. There was a one-time fee to run as many times as you wanted during the day on the track. Also, for free, you could be a passenger in a new Mustang with a professional driver on the track. The event culminated with a bar-b-que on Saturday evening and distribution of the prizes. The money prizes were very large as this is a non-for-profit event. We did not get the award this year for the most cars in a group but several in our group did win prizes from the daily free drawings of registration numbers. Maybe you want to join us for fun next year at Auto Fest Hosted and reported by Bill and Sharon Jurkonie

Page 7 A Event Report SMCTC Picnic & Meeting Hosted and reported by Peggy/Jerry Cardwell Jerry and I really enjoyed having our T-Bird family at the Barn for our picnic and fellowship. We appreciate all of the sweet comments regarding the farm and hope that everyone had a great time. Sorry that the weather did not cooperate regarding our car picture but maybe next year as I hear we have had a motion, seconded and passed that it s there again. For all that were not able to make it, we hope to see you there next year. Peggy relaxes after all the prep work for the Meeting/Picnic. Heavy rains earlier in the week prevented a planned drone photo op in the back yard and scared a few members into different cars. The Club cake was a hit! President Rick conducts a quick meeting before the Picnic. The female braintrust review some of the fun happenings from the Convention. Sylvia spins a yarn while Phyl and Sharon take it all in. Is this the 3 Stooges, decked out in the Hills Club shirts for Convention workers?

Page 8 A Event Report SMCTC Picnic & Meeting Hosted and reported by Peggy/Jerry Cardwell A service station theme graces the rest room in the garage. The Mt. LeConte Jug Band set the tone for the day. The queen of the garage is Peggy s pride and joy! Can you guess which bike is Jerry s?! Denise is picking the brain of former Nurse, Karen Sue, in prep for her upcoming knee surgery. The Cardwells were decorated for the season!

Page 9 A Event Report Color Tour / Prison Tour Hosted by Alex Miller This year s fall color tour FINALLY took place on Saturday, October 27th, after a one week delay from one blustery, brisk and rainy day to another one, about the same. The week delay did allow a little more color to be added to the leaves. A leaf color array of 5 classic Thunderbirds (yellow, red, bronze, brownish and light green) braved the elements and was joined by 3 of the modern classics, a Mustang and a few other vehicles. The non-pleasant conditions kept a few others from bringing their classics. The route was the Devil s Triangle out from Oliver Springs and it goes by the Brushy Mountain Pen and now an End of the Line distillery. This Tail of the Dragon -type drive made for some interesting back woods scenery and colorful autumn leaves. We began in Oak Ridge, where there was another group of vehicles collected for a similar ride. Apparently, Alex was avoiding another speeding ticket and the V- W s couldn t stand the pace, so they passed us like a flash. We met other groups of vehicles (Jeeps and Miatas) in route that were doing the Triangle in the opposite direction.

Page 10 A Event Report Color Tour / Prison Tour Hosted by Alex Miller The drive terminated at the infamous Brushy Mountain Penitentiary in Petros, TN. A prison has been at this location since 1896 and gained a lot of popularity in the 1970 s when James Earl Ray was one of it s inhabitants. Ray escaped and was on the run for 54 hours before he was re-captured. Before the prison tour we dined at the Warden s Table Café A guard tower stands in contrast to the beautiful fall folage. A view of the Gym built when prisoners didn t get enough exercise in the coal mine. The End of the Line is a most appropriate label for this place This motley crew is doing time for having too much fun driving their Thunderbirds. Other guests did not enjoy their time here! This is look at a section of the wall where James Earl Ray and a few of his buddies climbed their way to a brief (54 hours) hike in the woods. A fake fight was going on in the yard to give them a chance to climb the wall. Here is a shot of your room if you were in the Hole. It measured about 4 x 8 and had no air conditioning or heat. WiFi was weak, even on a good day.

Page 11 A Feature Convention Feedback from around the aviary! Congratulations and Thank You for sponsoring a well organized and fun CTCI Convention. The Convention Center was an excellent location. The activities were well organized and enjoyable..c. F., MS..From all we hear from our Club members here in Dallas the convention was very well planned and everyone had a wonderful time. We sure missed being there!... D. S. TX. Please thank all of the committee members also. They were all such a joy! I had the best time ever the people, the events, (I was amazed at the Smoky Mountains), the Awards, Fabulous Job Well Done. It will be a wonderful Tennessee Convention Memory I will have forever J. L. CT Thank you for an amazing experience. Your club and its volunteers went above and beyond any and everything imaginable.... we participated in an enlightening and positive event. Everyone we met was pleasant and helpful and those most notable / memorable to us were Jerry, Rick, Katie, Kathy, Rusty, and a host of many others R. P. FL Needless to say, I was more then pleasantly surprised to get the refund check in the mail today. Knowing you had to shell out money for plaques, banquet diner, etc. I just chalked up the registration fee up to a contribution for the event. Glad to hear it was financially a success also. I've heard from a few people how much it was a great convention. J. G. CO Congratulations to all of you on organizing and managing a fantastic event. We really enjoyed being a part of it. M. H. TX.Everything was "top notch", the venue, tours, food, banquet, hotels and especially the Hospitality your club members demonstrated to all attendees. I heard this, quite literally, from everyone we came in contact with, I think your Club "raised to bar", once again, for putting on a Convention. Please express our thanks and appreciation to all of your Members.B. Y. IA Thank you SMCTC members! You did yourselves proud!

Page 12 IN MEMORIAL Arnold Art Copcutt We were saddened to learn in September that member, Art Copcutt, was suddenly, and tragically, killed in an auto accident. Art, and wife Sandy, have been SMCTC members for some time. Art spent his career as a CPA. Art was involved with antique cars long before joining SMCTC. He was a member of AACA and the Model A Club. Art had not been able to be very active in our club due to his involvement in supporting his mother and also updating a home he recently purchased. He did attend MockingBird Run IX in 2017 and, true to his nature of being helpful, actively participated in the impromptu tech session for Perry s generator issue. Our deepest sympathies go out to Art s family.
