1 TOUCH OF GLASS CORVETTE CLUB NEWSLETTER Volume 6- Issue 1 January 2007 TOGCC TO INCREASE ANNUAL DONATION TO ETAN When TOGCC started out the 2006 year we had planned our annual TOGCC Garage Sale to help raise money for the clubs annual donation to East Texas Angle Network. A month or so later Fred Christy introduced the Club to Cindy Bagley form Cindy s Travel Emporium. The idea was presented to the club to go on a club sea cruise and raise funds for ETAN at the same time, the rest is history. We had fantastic participation from club members and at January s monthly meeting Cindy presented TOGCC a check for $ which consisted of a $50 contribution for each cabin booked on the trip plus a matched donation from Carnival Cruise Lines for the same $50. When TOGCC pulled private donations contributed throughout the year, funds generated from the Garage Sale and the Sea Cruise we were able to increase our annual donation to $3000 for We are proud to be an active local East Texas group that is able to give back to the community and hope it helps some others in need. Thank You Neal McCoy for your Foundation to direct the help where it is needed most. The donation will be presented to President of the Neal McCoy Fan Club Pasty Williams at February s monthly meeting, or possibly Neal McCoy if there are no scheduling conflicts. TOGCC Celebrates 5 Years 2006 was a great year for TOGCC with membership growing with enthusiast from East Texas bringing us to an all time high with 145 members and 110 Corvettes. We hope all the members of our club enjoy the diversity the club offers and enthusiasm in having fun with their Corvettes. 2 Page 2 From the Prez Touch Of Glass Corvette Club made two discussions at January s monthly meeting. One was to forfeit the TOGCC Corporation name and state tax I.D. number as we do not sell items for profit and we as a club pay tax on any items we purchase for the club. It is not necessary to carry the legal burden. The main reason TOGCC formed a legal corporation was to be able to secure event insurance, accept public ticket funds and sell items at a larger scale car show in TOGCC by general forum and unanimous vote decided not to conduct such a car show. Second TOGCC decided to join The Association of Chevrolet Enthusiasts established by Ecklers. Membership in ACE entitles our club to preferred listings and announcements in online members club directory, a complimentary subscription to Corvette Fever, goody bag items, and door prizes. In addition, membership in ACE entitles our club to liability insurance coverage for events our club hosts. All members of ACE will be covered under their master policy. Membership in ACE is based on a calendar year - January through December at a cost of $200 per year. TOGCC members unanimously voted to join ACE for the year of The TOGCC application was sent in by the January 10th. deadline. I have been presented the age old problem many of us cross at one time or another. You have a car you like very much but it requires some attention to keep up to a high quality standard. So the dilemma, do you spend the money and fix it up or do you resolve to selling it and moving into a newer model. I see more and more club members keeping the enthusiasm going by fixing up their current Corvettes which leads me to believe that they like their older Corvettes as much as I like mine. So with that said you can expect to see some changes to my 1999 C5, I am fired up about the changes and look forward to expressing some hidden talents to give my Corvette a total new look. 3 Page 3 Always Popular 5D Cattle Company There was a huge turnout for our first dinner cruise of 2007 to the ever popular 5D Cattle Company in Avinger. We started with a nice group of Corvettes pulling out of Ellis Pottery heading north to meet the Tyler group on a cool dry afternoon. Right after we pulled out on 259 Cheryl s State Trooper buddy s cruised by but she didn t get pulled over this time. WHOOOO! Once we knew how many we were going to have for dinner, Jim Spearman called ahead for seating arraignments. As always the folks at 5D were ready for us as they happily greeted us at the front door and had tables set up for the entire group. I think we had thirty for dinner. I don t know what others ordered but if you like steak their 8 oz. Filet is great with Cowboy potato's and a salad with ranch dressing. If you can take care of that and need more they have some of the best cobbler you can imagine. Dinner was complete and there was a migration across the street to see if there was anything interesting in the small shops. Everyone found what they needed or wanted! and we headed back home. 5 Volume 6- Issue 1 Page 5 January TECH DAY I didn t realize how long it had been since we had a tech day. The guys were ready with some really good projects. We conducted from real serious work all the way to cute addons. Brent started with his C5 coupe by changing the sway bar links front and back and an oil change. While this was working Evan pulled in his C4 for a valve cover change out and oil seals, Jeff Miller pulled in his C5 to change out the oil sending unit located behind the intake plenum. Brent was complete and Frank Stec was ready for a drilled and slotted rotor change out (this sounds serious but became cute). Fred Christy, Heath Pickering and Sockeye Lott were all there helping. I was eagerly awaiting the last project which was going to be a Dynatech long tube header install (not cute). Oh wait Johnny Eaves needs an oil change on his SSR (serious) O.K Larry Horn we are ready for some headers. Actually I had practiced this job with Russ Jr. and Heath earlier in the week on my C5. We had the process down pretty well. We had Larry s headers installed in just under six hours, not bad for a Busted Knuckle Crew! Johnny well it has a Corvette motor Russ Jr. my side is ready for the header Thanks to everyone's superb efforts and wonderful mechanical ability we were able to complete even the most dynamic job requests on one fantastic Saturday afternoon. 6 Page 6 We all knew World of Wheels was going on but had made no definite plans to go. It was decided at Saturday breakfast that we needed to go and see the car show. It was a good show held at the new convention center in Shreveport. We were able to visit some of our Shreveport friends, Owen Whatley, Dan Calaneau and Stewart Dubin all had their Corvettes on display and looking good and Robert Turk was working the Red River Chevrolet area. It was a quick run as we had to head back in time to make the 5D run that afternoon. Owen Whatleys th Anniversary and 1998 Pace Car Stewart Dubins 1975 Convertible Tech Day by Russ Jr. The Corvette guys have been coming over for a while now conducting tech days and working on their cars. I have been gaining experience by helping complete many jobs from break caliper metal finishing to painting, installing and detailing. I enjoyed this past weekend most of all. In my personal opinion I think Tech Day is a huge success and this weekends was one of the best and most active yet. There was a remarkable turnout with at least twenty five people. There were the usual oil changes conducted but there was a considerable amount of work done under the hoods of several Corvettes. It seems to me that everyone is starting to see that these cars can be fixed and modified by their owners. Brent Brevard started on the lift changing out sway bar links and an oil change. Jeff Miller put a new oil sending unit in his C5 while Evan Spicer put new valve covers on his C4and made an attempt to put in new valve seals but decided there was a little too much work involved. Then the focus was put on Larry Horn s C5 when a few guys dug in to install a set of Dynatech headers, Hi-Flow Cats and X-Pipe all the way to the Borla s. The installation turned out to be a lot of work with all of the following parts needing to be removed and reinstalled, valve covers, coil packs, spark plugs & wires, oil dip stick, alternator, O-2 sensors, bell housing bolt, wires and original exhaust. It was remarkable that the job was completed in under six hours. Our first attempt and completion of installing Dynatech headers on my fathers car took almost ten hours (but he had to polish them). Last I would like to encourage others to come up with some interesting projects to do. I really enjoyed working on Larry s car and I think that my father and Larry will be impressed with the results after the Dyno tune.
