1 The Jersey Late Greats kicked off our summer time event on May17th with the Multi- Club Picnic. We welcomed our guest the New Jersey Corvair Club and the Central New Jersey Corvette Car Club as we started the grill and set up for our feast for the day. Another pleasant surprise was when Tony and Sue Luce showed up with a delicious desert in hand! This was our first summer time event without a club meeting and it seems that no one missed it at all. Al Bernotas fired up the grill with his blends of wood and coal. Lou DiPietro helped Al in the cooking of the burgers and dogs. It seems the two of them have become the top chef of the club. I m always asked the question, Is Al and Lou cooking? So again, Thanks guys for the great job on the grill! Everyone mingled and talked cars all day. The children enjoyed climbing the slide and just playing together for the day. The food was plentiful and delicious. Jan and Sammy Lucas could not make this year s event but Jan sent her taco salad anyway with John which is always a hit and enjoyed by all. Thanks Jan! I want to thank everyone who made and brought food. Steve Calandra set up his sound system and delighted us with sounds of the 50 s 60 s and 70 s through out the day with the help of his sister-in-law. Once again Verne hosted his car games! He received great door prizes from Hightstown Advantage Auto for this event. Teams gathered together to drive their classic cars with a bag over their head and some even let their better half guide them in one of the games. Later on, Verne tallied up the scores and presented the winners with a prize. Al Bernotas walked around and sold 50/50 s. Later on when the raffle was pulled, there was a moment of silence as I checked my ticket. No, it wasn t mine and still, silence. I than remembered when Tony and Sue left, Tony gave me his tickets and asked if he won, please donate his winnings back to the club. I pulled the second set of tickets out of my left pocket and my eyes went right to a middle ticket with the winning number on it. Thank You Tony and Sue for your generosity! That morning before the clubs picnic, the board met at Jim Brussel s home. We held a brief meeting about a club 12-month calendar for Verne held the meeting and laid out all the financial information to produce 500 calendars. We came to the conclusion we need more information to take on this financial responsibility... We really need to think this one out completely and look more into the financial end of it. At this time we may be looking at On June 14 th we will be meeting at my house in Carneys Point New Jersey. Please make plans today to join Leigh and I. We are planning a demonstration of a classic flame layout and paint by Egon s Body Shop located two doors from us. He is working on a 1929 Ford two-door coupe right now that will have a mild flame job and we are hoping that we can have this car on display at our event. Egon will show his talents of layout flames, painting and pinstripes then answer any of our questions. Also another good reason to come is to check out Leigh s new garage! 4 2008 Road Rally News 2008 LHHC Road Rally 12th Annual Lincoln Highway Road Rally Itinerary is Set... start your engines After trying to accommodate several of our regular Rally attendees to offer our Lincoln Highway Road Rally on a different weekend, it just wasn t meant to be. Traditionally, our Rally is the 3rd weekend in September. Tried as we might, we had to stick to the 3rd weekend in September for the 2008 Lincoln Highway Road Rally. After trekking out east the last couple of years, this year s event will focus on attractions along the historic Lincoln Highway route in Westmoreland County in the western end (Irwin to Ligonier) of the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor. Bring your camera and cooler. All meals (lunch, dinner and breakfast), admission into all attractions, a cool designer tee-shirt, Rally Guide, a goodie bag, and chance for door prizes are all included in $60 adult registration fee. What a deal! When you check-in, you ll be given the Rally Guide, admission tickets for all attractions, dining tickets, tee-shirts, and goodie bag. Nothing will be mailed to you in advance. This year s event will follow the Poker Run format, where you receive a playing card at each of the stops. Prizes will be awarded for the best poker hand at the Sunday breakfast. Overnight lodging is at a premium that weekend; please call and reserve a room ASAP and mention the Lincoln Highway Road Rally to get the special reduced rate they quoted. Our recommended hotel is the Mountain View Inn (which sits between the old Lincoln Highway and Route 30 about half-way from Latrobe to Greensburg) and designated a Historic Hotel of America; the special room rate is $98. It has restaurant and lounge on premise. If you prefer a franchise, check out Wingate Hotel by Wyndham in Latrobe Restaurants and lounges are next door and across the highway from the Wingate. A third option is the former Holiday Inn Express (soon to be part of the Comfort Inn) in Greensburg Rally check-in will be Friday evening, September 19, from 6-8 p.m. at the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor Office at 114 S. Market Street, Ligonier. Olga and Kristin will be watching for you. If you plan to roll into the beautiful Laurel Highlands after 8 p.m., then you can always check-in from 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. at the Big Mac Museum in Irwin, our first stop on the Rally.

5 For those arriving Friday, you have several fun choices for the evening: Take in a Drive-In Movie at the Hi-Way Drive-In on Route 30 near Latrobe; bowl a frame or two at Lincoln Lanes on Route 30 near Latrobe; see a current movie at the Latrobe Family Cinema on Route 30 near Latrobe; or, catch a bite to eat at any of the area restaurants. Lincoln Highway Rally Schedule Saturday morning, September 20. Big Mac Museum at 9051 Route 30 just east of Irwin from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Group presentation at Antique Auto Restoration Shop. Rick will be waiting for us to begin his colorful presentation at 9:45 a.m. sharp. DeLallo s Italian Marketplace. Group Lunch at A Summer Place. 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. Your Rally registration fee includes lunch at this Lincoln Highway hot spot in their screened-in porch. Saint Vincent Gristmill and Coffee Bar. Group Presentation at the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve; 3 p.m. Darlington Train Station; 4:15 p.m. Shopping in Ligonier. One shop not to miss is the LHHC Gift Shop located at 114 S. Market Street., which will be open from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on September 20. Joe s Bar, Ligonier. This is so much more than a neighborhood bar. It is a museum of sorts.and suitable for younger patrons. Bring your camera! Group Dinner at The Road Toad. Heading west of Ligonier, the staff at this Lincoln Highway roadhouse will be expecting us for dinner at 6:30 p.m. Again, dinner (tax and gratuity) is included in your registration. Sunday, September 21 Group Breakfast at Mountain View Inn. 9 a.m. Then it s time to settle in and listen to Dr. Kevin Patrick s presentation on Diners of PA, and the Lincoln Highway. Kevin is very knowledgeable about both topics (he co-authored Diners of PA) and has an easy-going, entertaining presentation style. At 11 a.m., we will all travel into Latrobe to see the 1938 Diner that the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor is restoring. This diner was donated to the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor by the Senator John Heinz History Center of Pittsburgh. There are only four others like it in the world! Kevin will join us and finish up his remarks there. Registration Deadline is Friday, August 29, 2008.

8 TINWORMS & UNOBTAINIUM Howdy Folks, I hope all of you are enjoying this great weather and are tooling around in/on your favorite vehicle. The car show season is now in full swing, and it seems that participants and spectators alike are undaunted by rising fuel prices. I am in total agreement with that, why waste the enjoyment of driving your car? This month our club has a few display events for the benefit of the club s Treasury. The first one will be at Burlington Chevrolet on May 31 st. Al Bernotis has graciously arranged these events to support our club, so please consider bringing your car out and attending! If you have questions, please call Al directly at Word has it that there was an unauthorized gathering of club members somewhere in Scenic Warren County for the purpose of accomplishing some much needed tasks on John Lucas beautiful white Impala. Members in attendance were: Jim Brussel, Jim Krous, John Lucas, Rocky DeGregorio and yours truly. It seems that John s Chevy was suffering from a growling and howling rear differential which turned out to be caused by a defective axle bearing. Both axle bearings were replaced; along with the center section as a freshly rebuilt 3:08 Posi was installed. John, Jim Brussel and Jim Krous also installed new power steering hoses and a new fuel tank sending unit. With the current prices of canned spinach, Mr. Lucas felt it was more economical to get the power steering back into operation. Truth be known, it was more like a friends gettogether than a work session. J.B and John installing the axle covers That being said, John commented how nice it was to drive the 58 again, and you can see him and his car at Burlington Chevrolet this weekend. Come on out and enjoy the fun! That s all for now, keep those Late Greats Rollin TOM
