STAY SHARP 1) When can hazardous wind shear be expected? A. Following frontal passage when stratocumulus clouds form, indicating mechanical mixing. B. Her brother Wilbur said, "If ever the world thinks of us in connection with aviation, it must remember our sister." Katherine Wright first flew with her brothers for their demonstration flights in France in Katherine could have been the inspiration for the Baroness Raymonde de Laroche of France, who was the first woman in the world to solo in 1909 and the first woman in the world to earn her pilot's license in New England Section Officers TREASURER Georgia Pappas ENE Chapter georgia@alongtheway.com A NOTE FROM THE GOVERNOR We are testing a new format of our monthly Squawk with the hope that it engages, educates, and informs. In September the ENE Chapter hosted a publicity table at the Beverly Air Show. $1000 was raised for the ENE scholarship with 14 sign-ups interested in the 99s. Suzanne Tucci along with other enthusiastic ENE members organized the event. Due to weather, the Poker Run was rescheduled to Sunday, Sept 23 which also was the day for the Simsbury Airport Fly-In. Both events were enjoyed by many. Photos included. There is another at the Meriden Markham Airport in Meriden, CT. Oct 20th. These shows offer a great PR venue for the 99s as well as education and fun on lots of topics. Great for the whole family and volunteers always encouraged. The NE Section meeting Oct Deadline to Register date is Oct 12th. We look forward to seeing many of you in Freeport, Maine! As the 99s is an organization promoting women in aviation, it s never too young to start. When I was at a children s shop buying a shirt for my grandchild (with a bi-plane on the front), the cashier said, he ll love it. And I replied - she ll love it girls do fly! Heidi has been an ENE Chapter member since NEW Publication by Nina Anderson, CT Chapter Member A Barnstormer Aviator My personal journey to scarf and goggles flying in the 1930s I thought I would alert you to my latest endeavor. My dad wrote his flying memoirs prior to passing away and finally I put them together in this book. Lots of cool stories, photos, news clippings from back then and tales of his flying adventures and misadventures. This true story written by a New Jersey biplane pilot, is filled with names, places, aircraft and adventures from the golden era of aviation! What a fun read. James P. "The essence of this award is not only great achievement in one's own right, but recognition of the extra effort it takes to make all around you better each day. Anne exemplifies what this award means." Anne Bridge Baddour to receive the Katharine Wright Trophy Award On August 9th, NAA announced that Anne Bridge Baddour had been selected as the recipient of the 2018 Katharine Wright Trophy. The trophy was established in 1981 and is awarded annually to an individual who "...has contributed to the success of others or made a personal contribution to the advancement of the art, sport, and science of aviation and space flight over an extended period of time." Baddour is being recognized for "... her lifelong personal commitment to the advancement of all who pursue aviation careers and her tireless efforts in educating the aviation community and general public." For the past 64 years, Baddour has dedicated herself to aviation. She has experience as a pilot in 42 types of aircraft and for 20 years, worked as a research pilot for Lincoln Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - the first female pilot employed by the Lab. She was assigned to programs for the Department of Defense and the Federal Aviation Administration, including work as an early tester of the Global Positioning System (GPS). Baddour has competed in 16 air races, beginning in 1954, and set 27 world speed records between 1985 and She has served as an active leader and helped to establish scholarship programs at variety of aviation organizations, including the Society of Experimental Test Pilots, the Aero Club of New England, the Ninety-Nines, the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum, and Daniel Webster College. Throughout her work with these organizations, Baddour has stood behind countless individuals, helping them to achieve their career goals by leading them through inspiration, scholarship, and guidance.
