3 Airs Wednesday, May 25, at 7:00 p.m. MT/PT See it in HD at 8:00/7:00 p.m. and 11:00/10:00 p.m. MT/PT Hatred comes in all forms and has no boundaries. Conscience has no shape or form, but it can conquer even the most deep-seated hate. In a new, hour-long documentary, Idaho Public Television s Marcia Franklin explores the story of a group of activists in north Idaho who mobilized to oppose the Aryan Nations, a white supremacist/ neo-nazi group that set up a compound near Hayden, Idaho, in the 1970s. The rhetoric emanating from the Aryan Nations compound influenced its members and associates to commit many crimes, including bombings in Coeur d Alene, Spokane and Boise; bank robberies; and the murder of radio host Alan Berg. Aryan Nations cross burnings and marches, broadcast around the world, also created an image of Idaho that hurt the state economically and attracted more racists to the area. To combat the situation, the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations, aided by citizens around the state, and politicians such as Govs. Phil Batt and Cecil Andrus, succeeded in strengthening Idaho s human rights laws. Using archival footage dating back 25 years, as well as interviews with human rights leaders, victims of prejudice and hate crimes, and a former neo-nazi skinhead, Franklin looks not only at the history of Idaho s modern human rights movement, but also at challenges that still lie ahead. Those challenges include the resurgence of hate groups, the debate over gay rights, the complex issue of immigration reform and, most significantly, the potential for bias and prejudice in every person. As the late human rights leader Bill Wassmuth told me, says Franklin, It s the people on the street and the people at the grocery store checkout counter who make Idaho a good place for everyone, or a scary place for some people. For a complete list of Airs Mondays at 9:00 p.m. MT/PT See it in HD at 7:00/6:00 p.m. and 10:00/9:00 p.m. MT/PT; and May 9 at 7:00/6:00 p.m. and 11:00/10:00 p.m. MT/PT Highlighted by a film produced in observance of the 50th anniversary of one of the seminal moments of the American civil rights movement the journey of the Freedom Riders AMERICAN EXPERIENCE presents two new documentaries and a repeat film that recall the plight of African Americans and their struggle for equal rights. From award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson comes Freedom Riders (May 16), the powerful, harrowing and ultimately inspirational story of six months in 1961 that changed America. From May until November 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risk their lives and many endure savage beatings and imprisonment for simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journey through the Deep South. Deliberately violating Jim Crow laws, the Freedom Riders belief in non-violent activism is sorely tested as mob violence and bitter racism confront them along the way. Freedom Riders features testimony from a cast of central characters: the Riders themselves, state and federal government officials, and journalists who witnessed the rides firsthand. The self-proclaimed Freedom Riders come from all strata of American society black and white, young and old, male and female, northern and southern. They embark on the rides knowing the danger but firm in their commitment to the ideals of non-violent protest aware that their actions could provoke a savage response but willing to put their lives on the line for the cause of justice. The other new film, Soundtrack for a Revolution (May 9), tells the story of the civil rights movement through its powerful music the freedom songs protesters sang on picket lines, in mass meetings, in paddy wagons, and in jail cells as they fought for justice and equality. The music enables African Americans to sing words they cannot say, and is crucial in helping protesters as they face brutal aggression with dignity and non-violence. The infectious energy of the songs sweep people up and empower them to fight for their rights. Also this month is an encore presentation of Roads to Memphis (May 2), a look at the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and how his murder changes the course of civil rights history. 4 With the spotlight on salmon in Idaho, Washington and Oregon and bears in Alaska, episodes this month have a decidedly Northwest flavor. Salmon: Running the Gauntlet airs Sunday, May 1. The three-part Bears of the Last Frontier airs Sundays, May 8, 15 and 22. All shows are at 8:00 p.m. MT/PT and on HD at 6:00/5:00 p.m. MT/PT. Salmon: Running the Gauntlet With Idaho rivers and residents playing key roles, this documentary on the once great runs of salmon in the Northwest has a distinctive Gem State flavor. Those salmon migrations are now facilitated in laboratories with the fish raised in tanks, driven in trucks, and farmed in pens. Writer/producer and Boise resident Jim Norton investigates the parallel stories of collapsing Pacific salmon populations and how biologists and engineers have become instruments in experiments to replicate every stage of the fish s life cycle. The film is the fulfillment of what will be about a 6 1/2-year grind for me, says Norton. I wrote the first tease in late Entirely shot in the Pacific Northwest, including Idaho, this film chronicles the effort to save salmon. Among those interviewed is native Idahoan Jerry Myers, Upper Salmon Basin project manager for Trout Unlimited. I spent many an evening campfire discussing the plight and the future of Idaho salmon with Jim Norton as we guided Idaho rivers together for over a decade, says Myers. Salmon represent to me our spiritual link to the land and to the animals we share a planet with. We haven t held up our end of the deal very well. If we lose salmon to our own indifference, it would feel like losing a family member to neglect. Being witness to the enduring fierceness that salmon possess for completing life s circle has given me strength in my own life and provided me an optimism that, given a chance, life will prevail. Also featured is Gregg Servheen, a natural resources biologist with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game in Lewiston. Some of the locations in Idaho include Redfish Lake in the Sawtooth Mountains, the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, and the Columbia Basin. Bears of the Last Frontier From lush forests to the icy Arctic, bear expert and ecologist Chris Morgan journeys to the frontiers of Alaska to reveal the survival strategies of the bear populations that reside in the 49th state. This film follows Morgan, a resident of the Bellingham, Washington, area, on a year-long motorcycle odyssey deep into Alaska s bear country to explore the resiliency and adaptability of black, brown and polar bears in five ecosystems: coastal, urban, mountain, tundra and pack ice. Feared by some, revered by others, bears are an icon of everything wild, writes Morgan in his blog. But they are complex, intelligent animals that have faced persecution wherever they are found. Only in truly isolated regions like Alaska can they live out their lives the way they always have, and that s what we are here to experience. Traveling with a small film crew whose inclusion in the series creates a behind-the-scenes feel throughout, Morgan, a frequent lecturer at Western Washington University, immerses himself completely in the animals world to provide an intimate portrait of North American bears. Over the course of a 3,000-mile journey that includes the Alaska Peninsula, Anchorage, Denali, Brooks Range, Kaktovik and Barrow, Morgan reveals bears as curious individuals with unique personalities. Along the way, he has close encounters with bears, observing battles among males during mating season as well as tender moments between a grizzly mom and her cubs. 5 Snakes on Display in May Airs Tuesday, May 17, at 2:00/1:00 p.m. MT/PT They are among the most feared and misunderstood creatures on Earth. They live all over the globe, but very few are poisonous. Snakes play an important role in the ecosystem, yet many people fear them. Learn about Snakes: which ones are safe; which ones are dangerous; and what makes them unique. D4K host Joan Cartan-Hansen and her guest scientists Frank Lundburg, president of Reptile Conservation Resources Inc., and reptile expert Scott Smith answer questions. Live snakes will be part of the program. Students can watch the show over the air or on the D4K Web site. They can send questions through to fax them in before the show to (208) , or call in live during the program to (800) Shortly after the show, students can view a Web-only video with Lundburg, an adjunct instructor in the Boise State University biology department, and Smith answering questions that were not part of the on-air broadcast. The D4K Web site (idahoptv.org/d4k) provides educational materials throughout the season. Students can access more information and facts about each topic, links, reading lists, a glossary, podcasts of programs, video shorts, full episodes and special D4K Web-exclusive programming. Burton returns to her north England home to interview for the job at a girls high school in the fictional town of South Riding in Yorkshire. She brings new energy, new ideas, and a new outlook to the institution where students face a bleak future in the hard economic times. Local landowner Carne, who is on the board, opposes Burton s candidacy but is attracted to her even as he is suspicious of her social agenda. Winifred Holtby s novel is still much-read and much-loved in Britain, and in her words, the story is about the drama of English local government. But it is also about feminism, the battle between progress and tradition, the transforming power of education and a doomed romance. Political action takes a backseat to interpersonal relationships in this script by Andrew Davies (Little Dorrit). Yet the production still draws on local council drama where change is afoot under the leadership of Mrs. Beddows (Penelope Wilton), a forwardthinking municipal councilor. Other characters include: a left-leaning councilor, a councilor seeking to feather his nest, a lustful lay preacher, a brilliant but povertystricken student, and Carne s daughter, who is protective of her father due to a mysterious calamity that befell her mother. Vying for gold, silver and Airs Tuesdays May 3-24 at 10:00 p.m. MT/PT See it in HD at 8:00/7:00 p.m. MT/PT From a Nazi propaganda film, to a martyred Middle East leader, to insects in Japan, to the ongoing struggle of integration in America, this documentary series trains the spotlight on fascinating subjects during four new episodes in May. Here is the lineup: A Film Unfinished (May 3) In 1954, 60 minutes of raw footage belonging to the Third Reich is discovered inside a concrete vault in East Germany. Shot in 1942 in the urban concentration camp known as the Warsaw Ghetto, the film juxtaposes shocking images of starvation and despair against scenes of wealthy Jewish residents enjoying fine dinners, dancing in nightclubs, and attending the theater. In years later two additional film cans are found, revealing that the vignettes of the good life had been staged by the Nazis to create a hideously false impression. The documentary probes deeply into the making of this now-infamous Nazi propaganda film. Presenting the raw footage, the documentary contains court transcripts featuring testimony from a cameraman who shot the movie and scenes of ghetto survivors reacting as they watch the film. Bhutto (May 10) This film tells the epic tale of the life and tragic death of Benazir Bhutto, who breaks the Islamic glass ceiling as the first woman leader of a Muslim country. Beloved by the people of her native Pakistan, she is reviled by the nation s military establishment and male-dominated ruling class. In December 2007 she is killed by a suicide bomber. She remains a divisive figure, a symbolic metaphor for the fight between terrorism and moderation. Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo (May 17) This film begins in modern-day Japan and works backward to explore the history of that nation s love affair with bugs. Using insects like an anthropologist s toolkit, the film uncovers Japanese philosophies that will shift viewers perspectives on nature, beauty and life, and counter the exigencies of day-to-day life. Welcome to Shelbyville (May 24) In this small town in the heart of America s Bible Belt, a community grapples with rapidly changing demographics. Just a stone s throw away from Pulaski, Tennessee (the birthplace of the Ku Klux Klan), longtime African-American and white residents are challenged with how best to integrate with a growing Latino population and the more recent arrival of hundreds of Muslim Somali refugees. China s Terracotta Warriors (Wednesday, May 18, at 7:00 p.m. MT/ PT; see it in HD at 6:00/5:00 p.m. MT/ PT) reveals that the Chinese may have had Henry Ford beat by more than 2,000 years. They may have established their own assembly line used to produce 8,000 lavishly painted terracotta warriors. The story begins two centuries before the birth of Christ. The first emperor of China orders an extravagant tomb for his journey into the afterlife and decrees that a monumental army protect him forever. For centuries these ancient warriors were hidden in the emperor s tomb, brightly painted, fully armed, and ready to protect their emperor for all eternity. Now a group of scientists, led by archaeologist Agnes Hsu, returns this army to its former glory. Row upon row of life-size, lavishly painted warriors rise from the dust of two millennia. The researchers explain how a terracotta army was created in less than two years using the technology of 2,200 years ago. idahoptv.org 23

They use modern sealants, paints and other materials to make old boats new again and to create new ones. The restoration process is a long process. It is labor intensive, says McCall s Don Hardy, who is working on a 1939 Chris Craft Barrel-back. Sometimes, he says, it is a matter of replacing much of the wood, motor, interior and even fittings. The Yandt Boat Works once occupied the lakeshore where Coeur d Alene Resort is now. Ron Yandt and his son Wes are working on a boat originally built in the family shop. What they expected to do quickly, Wes says, turned into learning how to go about building the boat. Duane Hagadone of Coeur d Alene sails on a completely new wooden boat built on the lake s edge. We have adapted and melded together the old technology of wood (but) we re using modern processes to put it all together, says Jim Brown, project manager. We re marrying that to high technology this boat is literally a push button sailing craft. Curt Moten, a retired civil engineer of Idaho Falls has taken up the challenge of building new wooden drift boats, kayaks and canoes. The attributes or design features you use are similar to what you use to design a ship, Moten says. It s just a difference of scales. The things you have to worry about are the same. It s just that this is smaller. Kenly Bitton, east of Idaho Falls, has been building new wooden drift boats since the early 1980s. They re just the greatest boat in the world to oar, he says. Now, in interviews she gives before she dies at the age of 98, she reveals the truth about a daring conspiracy of women who saved thousands of Jewish children from internment and death. Sendler is a 29-year-old social worker when the Nazis invade her native Poland. When Warsaw s Jews are imprisoned inside a ghetto without food and medicine, she and her friends smuggle in aid and begin smuggling orphaned children out hiding them in convents, orphanages and private homes. Soon they are appealing to Jewish mothers also to part with their children in order to save them. Before the Nazis burn the entire district to the ground, Sendler and the other women manage to smuggle more than 2,500 children from the hands of the Nazis. Over the next two years, they care for the children, disguise their identities and move them constantly to keep them from being discovered and killed. In October 1943, Sendler is captured by the Gestapo, imprisoned and tortured. Refusing to divulge anything about her organization, she is sentenced to death. She escapes on the day she is to be executed, thanks to her friends in the Resistance. With a new identity, she continues with her work until the end of the war. This one-hour special features Sendler, her liaisons and several of the children (now senior citizens) they rescued. Archival footage, family photographs and poetic re-creations shot in Warsaw help tell their stories. idahoptv.org 27

GREAT PERFORMANCES Airs Tuesday, May 31, at 8:00 p.m. MT/PT See it in HD at 6:00/5:00 p.m. and 9:00/8:00 p.m. MT/PT Sponsors: Bistline Family Foundation, The Flicks, Pioneer Federal Credit Union Journey of the BONESETTER S Daughter This documentary follows the creation of the San Francisco Opera s production of The Bonesetter s Daughter, composed by Stewart Wallace with a libretto by Amy Tan and based on her bestselling book of the same name. This cross-cultural tour de force brings together artists from China and the U.S. The opera tells a story about the difficult but unbreakable bond between mothers and daughters inspired by Tan s own family history. Tan s libretto draws heavily on the suicide of her maternal grandmother, and explores its impact on successive generations. My grandmother was somebody who was forced into a subservient position, Tan says. She was raped, and the only way she could gain her power was to kill herself. The film follows Tan as she explores her past, traveling with her half-sisters to the home in China where her grandmother 120 lived and died. As the opera production is mounted, Tan grapples with how best to capture and preserve the emotional truth of her family story in the drama unfolding on stage. Tan uses elements of her own life in The Bonesetter s Daughter to explore the immigrant experience and the ways in which both love and history can be lost in translation. The opera opens at a birthday party in San Francisco s Chinatown. Ruth (Zheng Cao), a young Chinese-American woman, has organized the celebration for her aging mother, LuLing (Ning Liang). But the party disintegrates when LuLing launches into a delusional tirade, an early sign of her Alzheimer s disease. LuLing s illness and the revelation that she has guarded family secrets since childhood prompt Ruth to begin a journey of discovery into her mother and grandmother s past. 31 STATION NOTES FESTIVAL 2011 Meets Its Goal by Megan Griffin, Director of Development We couldn t have done it without you! Thanks largely to the generosity of our supporters and the hard work of more than 1,000 volunteers, Idaho Public Television met and even slightly exceeded our FESTIVAL 2011 goal. We raised $1,050,226 in pledges during our 16-day on-air fundraising drive in March. Having surpassed our FESTIVAL goal of $1,050,000, we are now within reach of our overall fundraising goal of $1.4 million by the end of June. But we can t rest on our laurels. And we can t do it without your help. While FESTIVAL is certainly our largest and most visible fundraising effort, it is not the only component of our overall initiative to garner financial support. The contributions we receive throughout the fiscal year underscore the value Idahoans place on our television programming and related services. At IdahoPTV we are committed to providing programming that educates, enlightens and entertains our viewers throughout the year. But it takes your support. Private funding sources for our statewide television system come from a combination of generous businesses and corporations, foundations and individuals like you. The private dollars make up 65 percent of IdahoPTV s total budget; the remaining dollars are from state and federal funds, which are currently threatened. Help us reach our goal by June 30. You can contribute online at idahoptv.org or by phone at (800) or (208) within the Treasure Valley. Contributions can also be mailed to: 1455 N. Orchard St., Boise, ID For more information on how to increase your membership gift or to become a member or sponsor, call the phone numbers listed above. On behalf of my colleagues at Idaho Public Television, thank you again to everyone who played such an important role in FESTIVAL s success this year. Mail this form to Idaho Public Television, PO Box 4, Boise ID or call (800) ; in the Treasure Valley at Be sure to return this form to Idaho Public Television by May 31, Remembering Lynn Allen Former Idaho Public Television employee Lynn Allen died in April while on a trip with her husband, Richard (Dick), and friends. In recent years, Allen coordinated the Community Cinema program in Idaho for ITVS (Independent Television Service) in conjunction with IdahoPTV. The fall through spring monthly event on participating college campuses presents free preview screenings of INDEPENDENT LENS features, followed by discussions of the film s topic. During her more than a quarter of a century of service to Idaho Public Television, Lynn brought great wisdom and knowledge to the educational mission of our statewide system, IdahoPTV General Manager Peter Morrill said. She will be sorely missed by her friends at IdahoPTV and across the state. Allen came to IdahoPTV in 1980 just before the statewide system was created. She worked four years as administrative assistant to the general manager before assuming duties as the system s first personnel manager, and writing the original policy manual. Beginning in 1987, Allen became KAID station manager where her job included community relations. In 1995, she became outreach director and Ready To Learn coordinator, responsible for statewide community activities. She worked with organizations and agencies throughout Idaho to further learning goals, especially early learning. Projects included: workshops for child care providers and parents; initiating 21 peer mediation projects in Idaho high schools; and training teachers to use technology in the classroom. After leaving IdahoPTV as an employee in 2002, Allen was contracted to manage grants for Ready to Learn and other learning programs for IdahoPTV, in addition to her work with ITVS. She once said: I derive personal satisfaction from building community collaborations to address, and significantly impact, social needs. She translated this into vibrant, enthusiastic and energetic delivery of overarching goals as approachable handson participatory events. idahoptv.org 31
