Incredible WWI Tribute In London Looks Like A River Of Blood But Look Closer! By Steve Rushing AUGUST 2, 2014 (Item by from Lewy and you will have seen it on TV recently) World War I, known at the time as the Great War, was thought to be the war that would end all future wars. All sides suffered an incredibly high number of needless deaths and the war devastated an entire generation In fact, the sheer amount of destruction and death has only been eclipsed by World War II. Since it ended, all countries involved have held memorials to remember their fallen dead who sacrificed their lives for the good of their country. This fact is all the more so in England, where nearly a million people lost their lives. What they've done to commemorate their fallen soldiers is truly beautiful, while also helping us understand the true scope of these soldiers' sacrifice. Even a hundred years later, we should not forget their incredible acts of heroism. The moat that surrounds the Tower of London has long stood empty and dry. But now, what may look like gushing blood from it's very walls, is actually something beautiful, This summer, the moat has been filled with 888,246 red ceramic poppies, one for each British and Colonial soldier who perished during World War I. For the past few weeks, a team of 150 volunteers has been placing red ceramic poppies one by one around the Tower. The last poppy will be symbolically planted on the last day of the installation: November 11, Armistice Day. Each evening, the Last Post will be sounded and a selection of names of the dead read out loud. It's stunning and sobering commemoration that befits the Great War. Regardless of why their countries went to war, we should never forget the selfless acts of these brave men. Please share their story, and help remember their lives, by forwarding this far and wide. 9 Allo Allo Allo. We have seen this Desert Blitz before. Below, a couple of this Blitz HUP just for James Baxter.

ANZAC 2OI4 TOUR TO NORMANDY Part B in what will be many parts. Edited by Graeme Person from a trip diary by Mick Jericevich - Photos by Graeme Person We set off to find the hotel first but succeeded in letting lost in a series of narrow street which were OK for the Jeep but not for the Dodge. Hans spotted a policeman outside what turned out to be a police station and spoke to him about directions. As luck would have it, there were 2 off duty police standing outside as well. They offered to drive with us firstly to the secure parking station which had 24 hr access and then walked us with our bags to our hotel which was a distance of about 800mts. We found that to be amazing as we had no idea where we were and it was almost dark. The hotel was nice except for some loud noise coming from a disco nearby which went until about 4am each day we were there. We decided that as it was probably run by the Mafia, we would not complain. Palermo is a very old city with some quite wide streets considering how long since the place was first settled 2700 years ago. We caught the Hop-on Hop-off bus which is an ideal way to get to see the sights without wearing out the legs. Two Kiwis who were on the 2009 tour arrived after touring around Sicily for a few days. We had lunch and dinner with the Kiwis to celebrate a birthday and continued our bus tour to see the sights of Palermo. The rest of our tour group arrived on the 27th and did some sightseeing while Hans was at the shipping office trying to sort out when we could get access to the vehicles. Several of us went to a Brahms concert in the magnificent concert hall that night which was different but as they say "When in Rome etc" April 28 - Most of us went sightseeing and Hans once again went to the shipping agents to finalise the arrangements for breaking the vehicles out of the containers. The last of the tour party' arrived at the Hotel Columbia on the Via del Corso April 29 - and we are ready to go to the container yard to unload and prepare the vehicles for the tour. The secure parking that we had used and had to use cost 100 Euros for 5 nights but there was no alternative. The Petersen's had to unload the Jeep from the back of the Chev and then erect the canvas over the tray. We had to place the plywood boxes in the back of our Jeep that had come in the container which contained our cooking/eating /sleeping gear plus the all important tool kit. All the vehicles had some s ort of preparation to attend to. The next important chore was to find a servo that would have enough room on the forecourt for l0 vehicles and be fairly close by as the vehicles were to carry minimum fuel and no LPG. Fortunately we found such a servo within a couple of K's from the port. The drive along the Northern coast of Sicily was interesting during the 70k to our campsite at Catania. Good facilities at this camp - a bit further on the standard was not so good. Jeep News No.155B October 2014

Jeep News No.155B October 2014

April 30 - We set off with the group but were held up by a rail crossing and lost sight of the group. Rang Tony Comber and he said they were at a servo and would wait for us. The day was not without its laughs as Tony was prone to go the wrong way around roundabouts and overshooting turnoffs. We finally arrived at Ceflilu on the lower slopes of Mt Etna with good facilities but no hot water for the showers - it was a lick and a promise that morning. May 1 This morning we drove up Mt Etna as far as the car park - the rest of the way to the crater was by chairlift but we had no time to go there. The coffee shop at the car park had a spectacular video playing featuring eruptions of Mt Etna. We headed off to Messina and to the ferry that took us about 30 mins to the mainland and on to Palmi. The original campsite was for campervans only, the second one which was a few doors along was not open and finally we found Lido Zio Tom Soster Camper. The facilities were a little below average. The shower was very basic in as much that to get the HOT Water? to run using a token purchased at the office, the token had to be placed in the slot in the box which was about 1.5 metres from the shower door. The trick was to get undressed place a towel or some other suitable garment about oneself, step outside the shower, place the token in the slot and quickly get back in the cubicle disrobe and get under the shower before the timer dispensing the water stopped and left ones body still lathered in soap. To be fair the water did run for a little longer than 2 min - Just! Dinner that night was at a restaurant overlooking the Tynenian Sea and the sunset was a delight. The coast along towards Amalfi is rugged with windy roads to match, very narrow and of course the tourist buses and many campervans which are both quite unsuitable for the roads in that area. The roads were built for horse and cart or even perhaps a chariot, so the result is a shambles and it wasn't even peak tourist season. It is however quite spectacular and probably deserves to have the reputation that it enjoys. We had more problems with the Jeep - it finally stopped altogether, so on the phone to Hans who was in front of us and could not see us then had to find a place to turn around and then come back us then find another place to turn around before finally towing us about 7 kms to the next campsite. May 4 - We arc at Sorrento in a really nice campsite with real showers that one can actually undress, shower and dress without leaving the shower cubicle. We have a spectacular view over the bay towards Mt Vesuvius and several cruises hips are coming and going from the bay down in front of us. We had breakfast at the restaurant in the camping ground and met some people from Melbourne who timeshare a campervan with 2 other couples. The van lives in the UK and the 3 couples alternate each year where they have about 6 weeks each. Jeep News No.155B October 2014

May 5 - Today we catch a ferry at the bottom of the hill at the campsite for a trip to Positano and Amalfi. We catch a small ferry and those who are going to Isle of Capri change to another ferry and we set off down the coast looking up at the road that we had struggled a long yesterday. No wonder it is so narrow as it has been cut out of a steep hillside many years, prior with primitive tools. There are some small tunnels that have been cut through a ridge that goes down to the water. Amalfi and Positano are quite a tourist attraction because of their location and in the summer would be a nice place but not in early May. Tonight there were fireworks out on the bay in front of us and firefly s are about - quite fascinating as we had never seen them before. May 6 - Today we catch the bus downtown Sorrento to the train which will take us to Herculean. This is similar to Pompeii but was not buried in lava but dust which leaves the area mostly undisturbed. Very interesting to see the way people lived and ate and stored food back then. Got the train back to Sorrento and found a WW2 memorial to the 28ft Maori Battalion at the station. We stayed in town to have a meal and went to catch the bus but they were on strike so 6 of us rode a maxi-cab back to the campsite. May 7 - Today we travel to Cassino. Getting out of Sorrento was a bit difficult but once on the freeway things were easier. Our campsite is right next to a busy rail line but the trains are less as the night goes on. The monastery on the hill is huge and a very impressive sight which is visible for many k s away. Tonight we have a BBQ amongst the group and share salads and breads etc. The sun setting on the Mount is great and a sight well worth going to see. May 8 - Today we climb up a steep road to the Monte which takes about 25 mins in an old vehicle with a few photo ops. The monastery was very impressive after the reconstruction from almost complete demolition during WW2. We went on a conducted tour which was the best way of seeing the interior. We then drove a short distance on top of the mount to the Polish War Cemetery which contained about 3600 graves and was beautifully maintained. We then went down to the Monte Cassino War Cemetery where the Kiwis and some of the Gurkhas are buried - very impressive and beautifully maintained as all Commonwealth war cemeteries are. May 9 - We are off to Rome today but first we are going to the military museum, Piano delle Orme near Latina. It is set in about 12 separate sheds each with different themes from the war. The first one was about the rounding up and transportation of ethnic groupings and others who fell out of favour with Hitler. Each minority had to wear, a different coloured star on their clothing as directed by the Nazis. The dioramas depicting their particular fate was extremely realistic and I had not seen that aspect of WW2 presented that way. The rest of the sheds had lots of vehicles - some we had never seen before alongside diorama's depicting various parts of the war. We found the campsite in Rome which had a really good dining room and a supermarket across the road along with the bus stop down on the street. Today, we go to the Colosseum and the several building/ruins around the area. A really amazing place. We opted for an English speaking guide who was a Canadian for a cost of 20 euros each but well worth the cost as we did not have to queue and saw all the sights in reasonable time to allow us to then go to the Vatican. Unfortunately, it was "Children s Day'' in St Peters Square. Apparently the Pope was to appear at the window so every kid for 10,000miles must have been in the Square because we couldn t get anywhere near the place. The closest we could get was about 1 km away and could see St Peters in the distance. Quite disappointing after going all that way!

European Correspond- Greetz Ingo Hey folks on the other side of the earth, the other major event for 2014 took place last month all over eastern Netherlands. Operation Market Garden. Thousands of military vehicles all around Arnheim and Nijmegen, hundreds of paratroopers, River crossings, parades with hundred thousands of spectators on the roads... Unbelievable.

Unfortunately, Events with 200 vehicles didn t mix with other events with 400 vehicles on their tour through Holland. Passing the same places within a few days or hours but no contact within the different groups. Sad. But anyway, it was almost even better than Normandy. Thousands of visitors in the camps, looking in your pot and under the bed... amazing. Cheers the European correspondent Ingo Silke and of course Felix Jeep News No.155B October 2014

The Mystery of the Farting Jeep The Revelation! - Chris Grossett Keen readers will recall in the previous edition of the WW2 Jeep Newsletter I started to recount a mysterious tale of how good ole Dougie (a 1942 Willys) caused me some grief in the hills and trails around Hill End. After the WW2 Jeepers had left for home, I undertook a more formal examination. I cleaned the fuel filter, checked the plugs and the carby seemed to be working okay. It was only the following weekend while enjoying a cool ale with a friend back at my second country estate (Dripstone) that the another possible cause was discussed. The friend let s call him Mr A for anonymity is the proud owner of a number of old tractors. Mr A s view was that the problem could be related to a device common to old tractors and, as it turns out, in WW2 jeeps. The device in question was simply a valve inside the exhaust manifold attached to a bimetal spring commonly called a heat control valve. Ideally, in cold conditions the flap would open allowing exhaust gases to pass around the fuel intake manifold. Thus, helping to vaporise fuel as it enters the carburettor. As the engine warms so too would the bimetal spring, forcing the counterweight upward, closing the valve and diverting the exhaust straight out to the exhaust pipe. A quick check of the G503 manual stated that a faulty valve could cause all sorts of problems including loss of power and stalling. A check of the spring itself appeared to show the device somewhat frozen in place after 60+ years of use. So, off with the exhaust and manifold and sure enough, after many, many years of repeatedly heating and cooling the device had simply failed and the valve itself lay loose inside the housing, free to open and close and flap around at will. As I rarely drive Dougie in snowlike conditions we removed the offending valve, took Dougie for a quick road test and the rest of the afternoon was spent celebrating a job well done. The next day I returned to Mr A s to pick up Dougie, with a wave I set off for home. And would you believe pfffffftttttttttttttarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt, again with the problem!!??!!

What the I calmly asked as I returned to Mr A s shed. The issue now had to be inside the muffler. So off it came. A quick run had Dougie running fine (if rather nosily) and a shake of the removed muffler resulted in some interesting rattles from within. Let s cut it open! was my decision and inside, sure enough, apart from a fair bit of carbon, a single piece of exhaust had come loose and was simply getting stuck like something on the end of a vacuum cleaner nozzle. A trip to the exhaust chappy in Dubbo for a new muffler and Dougie now runs sweet again, sounds smooth. So what had happened? Although I am sure people will have differing opinions I believe that it was a double whammy. At some point the heat exhaust valve had come loose. It then flapped around, shut off and built up some pressure that then blew out, taking out the small piece of metal inside the muffler, this then caused problems as it flapped around and simply shut of all exhaust gases. The result, back pressure and stalling. My advice, check that the bi-metal spring is actually working and then check yer flaps! Oh and where is Hill End? It s where the gold is of course.my latest find. So.. There is still Gold in them thar hills!!! Jeep News No.155B October 2014

IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM (Duxford) - Hello Mike, Things have changed a bit since The new Land Warfare centre is something else. That is where the Jeep photos were taken, except for the one taken of the parachute drop Jeep. There is an American air museum which is quite something. SR 71 Blackbird, B52, B24 Liberator, U2, Flying Fortress, F4 Phantom, F111 to name a few aircraft. I have photos of all those too. Will send a few more through soon Regards Phil - Thanks Phil, we always look forward to pictures! Jeep News No.155B October 2014
