1 VSOC CENTRE 9 July 2018 OWNERS OF: VIRAGO, DRAGSTAR, ROYAL STAR, VENTURE STAR, MIDNIGHT STAR, WARRIOR, RAIDER & STRATOLINER (OWNERS OF OTHER CUSTOM BIKES WELCOME AS ASSOCIATE MEMBERS) Hi All, Centre 9 Lost Riders Birthday Edition 23 rd Anniversary A great month with exceptional weather, it started with the trip to the rally in Denmark. Paul and myself left on Tuesday, taking a route across Holland and Germany avoiding motorways apart from through the Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg. The rally was enjoyable with a ride out to one of the biggest beaches I have ever seen at Romo. After talking with a local, we managed to avoid Hamburg by taking a small ferry across the Elbe, bring us just north of Bremen. We took a break on the way to the ferry home at the American Motorcycle Museum at Raalte - the largest collection outside of the USA. I arrived home on the following Wednesday and clocked 1280 miles. We visited the Nottingham meeting at RR Hucknall it was a fine evening, but only Paul C, Clare and myself turned up. Please try and support the local area meets if possible. On the Thursday we attended the Norton Bike Night at the Norton HQ at Donington Hall, along with Paul B, and Dave H. There were some interesting bikes, along with Nortons from through the ages and some other classics, two Laverda Jotas stood out. The IOM TT Bikes were also on display and John McGuiness was signing his book. The bike nights take place once a month during the summer and are definitely worth a visit. We then attended the 8 Ball Custom Paint Open Day, which again was interesting with air brush and pinstriping demonstration and a free hog roast worth a look if you want to update your paint work, this was also attended by Pat Hamilton. We then joined the ride out to the Swaton Vintage Show (and World Egg Throwing championships) see Brian s write up. Good to see Rachel & Kev. This last weekend we went down to Wiltshire to take part in the Ride of Respect, taking in a ride along and rememberance service on the runway of MOD Lyneham, then a ride through Royal Wooton Bassett and ending outside the new repatriation centre at RAF Brize Norton, a 46 mile ride in lovely sunshine and then back through the Cotswolds. Ride Safe Everyone Clare & Mark Editor

2 Your Founders and original VSOC members Paul Burdass and myself receiving our 25 Year Patches at the MCN Festival and the Denmark Rally respectively from our National Chairman Trevor Bridgwood. Hi Everyone, What a brilliant month. We had a fantastic time in Denmark and all but one day was dry and sunny. The first 4 days were particularly nice and we were greeted with glorious sunshine. We had a lovely ride to the first hotel in Germany. We went via the Afluit which is a causeway, 20 miles long with sea on one side and a lake on the other. The café in the middle served excellent food with beautiful views. Our hotel in Germany was lovely and the owner was so friendly and helpful. Nice room and good food. The journey the next morning started off well until there was an accident on the motorway ahead of us. We managed to filter to the front but then had to join the endless stream of cars and lorries leaving the motorway as it was closed ahead. We had to crawl about 15 miles until we could get back on. Both us and the bikes were over heating in the high 20 degrees temperatures. We did 110 miles in 4 ½ hours. The rest of the ride was a lot better even through the large number of roadworks. Unlike here they seem to flow better and they have a speed of 50 mph. We arrived at the rally around 19:00 after stopping at a grill place for a well-earned tea. The rally site was unusual as it was a little village in which nearly all the houses had been taken over by bikers. Our house was the first one you came to and had a fantastic view at the front overlooking a lake and a river to the side. The border between Germany and Denmark was a couple of minutes walk. The marquee was very small and it was lucky that the weather was nice as it would have split everyone up if not. Dancing on the Friday night was interesting as the dance floor was gravel. Food was excellent and the people friendly. After the rally we made our way to Copenhagen. The first few hours of our ride were marred by heavy rain but luckily it dried up before we went over the large bridges. We had arranged to stay at the Danish Club house and were met by Jan the Danish President. After a few beers, we settled in and had great fun wandering around and looking at all the biking memorabilia on display. It is an amazing place and looks as though it came out of a movie set. The next morning, we took a taxi to the train station and then a train into the centre of Denmark. It s a lovely place and we managed to see most of it walking and then in the afternoon we took a river cruise including a stop to see the Mermaid.

3 The next day we went to a Viking boat museum which was very interesting. They had discovered five boats sunk at the bottom of the fiord to block off one of the shipping routes. They have managed to preserve many parts and had reconstructed them into frames. Which have then been used to build exact replicas and relearn the techniques of building and sailing them. You can even pay go out on one of the replicas. The last two days and nights were spent travelling back to Harwich. We had a wonderful time and the people are so friendly. Lovely food and drink and look forward to travelling there again hopefully for the Finnish Rally. Thanks to Neil and Charlie for keeping us company we had a great time and look forward to the next one. Last Sunday we helped MAG man the gate at the Swaton Show. I think everyone was surprised to see us when they arrived. Last year the show donated 250 to MAG so well worth giving up a couple hours of our time. It was nice to see everyone on the ride out. We even had a last-minute stand which Steve, Cath and Chally manned. We had interest from one person which is what it is all about. Let s hope this weather lasts for the Welsh Rally and hopefully will see some of you there. The next meeting is on Tuesday 10 th July at the Jolly Scotsman, Sleaford. Ride Safe - Rachel Lincolnshire Rep SWATON VINTAGE DAY C9 RIDEOUT 24 TH JUNE 2018 It was a glorious Sunday morning and Lost Riders came from far and wide to meet at the Chris The Stalker Walker s, Kwaka Dealership in Grantham. This is a great meeting point (albeit ninja green); it has parking, café, toilets and displays the 1960 s DOT (Devoid of Trouble) Scrambler from Shed & Buried TV fame. When all assembled for the start at 11:00am, we outnumbered the locals with 12 Bikes and 2 Trikes. Chris & Lorraine took the lead and Brian was the back marker for the second manning. After negotiating the Grantham traffic, we were able to re-group and take a steady ride and enjoy the South Lincolnshire Countryside. Swaton Vintage Show is actually held at Thorpe Latimer, a country mile outside Swaton village in what is described as the Park. However, the off-road parking is across a heavily rutted field better suited to a DOT Scrambler than Paul Burdass brand new Anniversary Heritage Softail. Other Harleys fared little better and were liberally splattered, some say appropriately, with semi-soluble cow doings! Mercifully, the Qualifying Bikes were unscathed and we found parking under some trees which provided welcome shade on what was one of the hottest days in June.

4 Swaton Vintage Day is a fairly typical annual country show - Novelty Dog Activities, Craft Exhibits, Trade Stands, Tea Tent, Real Ale Bar, Hog Roast, and the added bonus of hundreds of Vintage and Classic Cars, Motorbikes, Tractors, Commercial Vehicles, Stationary Engines and other men s stuff. The show is also the venue for the World Egg Throwing Championships and in the afternoon, there s an amazing Lancaster Bomber and Dakota Flypast. While wandering around the show we came across seven other Lost Riders including Rachel, Trevor & Co. who were hosting the MAG stand although it has to be said they had rather more VSOC banners and advertising and of course prime parking for their bikes. Turns out exhibitors don t have to navigate the rutted field or pay the 5 entrance fee either! In total, 26 Lost Riders attended Swaton Vintage Day; truly something for everybody and a proper day out on the bikes. Brian Timms. Ride out from Grantham Chris & Lorraine Healey Brian Timms Joe & Catherine Broughton Andy Dobbs Dave Jacklin (Trike) Dave Freestone & Jennifer Dave Howarth Mark & Clare Winterbottom Paul Caine Lynn Caine (Trike) Paul Burdass Rod & Cathy Brown Pat Hamilton Daz Riley VIP Visitors to Swaton Rachel & Trevor Bridgwood Steve & Cathy Riglin New Member Stephen (Chally) Challoner Kev & Rachel McHale Centre 9 20 years ago July 1998: We attended the Boston Bike Night and had a stand (as we still do each year). Some members camped at the Rock N Blues Festival at Pentrich (now the Rock N Blues Old School Show) We hosted the joint East / West Midlands - Midlands Mayhem Rally at Litchfield Rugby. We attended the Sid s Posh Bash Rally hosted by Centre 15 in Guildford We had a stand at the Yamaha Owners Festival at Donington Park and took our bikes on a lap of the famous circuit. We had a BSH Land Marks Ride Out as took part in the event as a club visiting predetermined locations and taking a photo of our bikes to gain an award of a badge designed and made by Alchemy.
