Page 2 Sound Rides Volume 13 Issue 8 President s Piece. Well it s been another great month of rides and functions. We have been so lucky with the weather, although there were a few raindrops on the dirt bike ride that kept the dust down. The stop at Oakley Dam was well worth it. This is one of the hidden gems in our own backyard. Welcome to our new and returning people to the non committee positions. I hope you enjoy the challenges ahead. I would like to give a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to these positions over the last year. Our branch wouldn t be able to function as well as it does without your commitment. We now have 12 more First Aiders in the branch including our resident Tail-End-Charlie. Someone said to me that St John were encouraging 1 person in 10 to be first aid competent. WSW is well over that quota now. Thanks everyone who took part. It was a fun day, especially listening to the naughty student s (there s one in every class) comments. I thought I would send you an early reminder Broomstick Babbles. (Secretary) Welcome to all the new non-committee people. Please let our new Welfare Officer, Paul Campbell know if you hear of anyone ill or poorly and support the new Public Relations Officer, Joe Casserly in promoting our wonderful branch. The Editor, Shane Rooney and Web Master, Chris Cooper needs photos and articles for the newsletter and web site, but best of all dob in a Mug! Let Janette know of any disgraceful or silly mishaps so we can all have a laugh, they say it s the best medicine. We have had a quiet month of mail: Letter from the CEO of Mundaring Shire regarding the Memorial Day Gazebo booking. On Saturday we had 12 of our members do the first aid course at St John s Ambulance Rockingham. We all were put through our paces and learnt a lot of helpful information that could help save a life. Our Sedley picked up a new girlfriend at the first aid course, ask him what her name is! Ha Ha! Derek and I will be on holidays soon so we won t be here for the September meeting or the that the Memorial Ride is coming up on the 8 th September. This is a very important event on the Ulysses calendar with most branches Australia wide meeting at a special place and remembering friends that have ridden on. It would be great to see a large turnout for this ride. Don t forget that the Odyssey in Merredin is on at the end of next month so you ll need to get your registration form in soon. It will be great to catch up with all the other WA branch members and Perth Branch is set to provide a fun weekend. Finally, be extra careful on the roads over the winter. Carli had a spectacular save on a recent ride. I didn t see it but there were a lot of comments from seasoned riders about her maneuvering skills (or luck). She thinks there may have been diesel on the road at a roundabout, so please be aware of the possibility of things like this. Stay safe Dianna rides so I apologise for not being able to attend the Memorial ride. This ride has always been important to both of us as we remember those of our friends who have "Ridden On". Although we won't be there physically, we shall be there spiritually and we will send our prayers across the ocean. To all our friends we send our love, please take care out there and we will see you hopefully before you all go off to the Odyssey. See you out and about, Cheers, Julie Wilcox #35151 Secretary Warnbro Sound Wanderers Ulysses Club Inc
Page 3 Sound Rides Volume 13 Issue 8 Can you guess which fellow wanderer this is? Someone will be around shortly to collect your answers. Expression of Interest I am going to lead a ride to Fremantle in September, probably something like a Café ride to ESHED Markets. Once there I am going to lead a tour through the Submarine, HMAS Ovens, and am looking for an expression of interest for members and/or their families to come with me on a journey into life onboard an Australian Submarine. The cost will be $10 per head, or $5 for concession (Must Present Card). Your tour guide will be me (Joe Casserly) as I served for a total of 3 years onboard this Submarine I might be able to give you a unique perspective of life in a blocked off tube 100 s of feet below the surface of the ocean. If you are interested in coming along either message me or call me, the money will be collected sometime prior to the date of the tour, which is yet to be finalised. casserly@iprimus.com.au Ph:

Page 5 Sound Rides Volume 13 Issue 8 15 Minutes of Fame I was born in Midland WA in I was the youngest of four so I was spoiled rotten by my older siblings and my parents. I had an idealic childhood living across the road from the railway line. We would catch tadpoles and frogs in the winter and swim nonstop in the summer. We were able to ride for miles on our pushbikes and come home only when we were hungry or needed a bandaid. I finished my school career early and spent a few years in and out of awful jobs. My Dad died when I was 17. Mum sold the only home I had ever known and we went to stay with family. I got a job on Rotness Island and spent 6 months there working behind the bar. I don't remember too much about that 6 months only that I hate quokkas and can't drink Tequila. It was like schoolies week non stop. I then went to Broome for 4 months to work behind the bar at the Continental. This was an incredible learning experience and I still love Broome. In between Rotto and Broome I met a very hot guy called Dave. This relationship lasted 3 very intense weeks then we went our separate ways. I didn't realize then that I had met the love of my life. We met up again 2 years later and I fell head over heals in love. We were married 9 months later and have had a wonderful 35 years together. With our 3 children we moved to Rockingham 23 years ago. This was to be the best move we could have made. I became a driving instructor in 1992 and started my own business. After a few years Dave left Telstra and came to work in the business with me. Before this he had worked away leaving me to raise the kids, keep house and run the business. It was great to to have him home every day. Having someone in bed with me on a week night was weird. I felt like I was having an affair, but the novelty soon wore off. In 2004 we joined the Ulysses Club aligning ourselves with WSW. I think this is when I found my true friends and family. So to all the lovely people I have met and to all that I will meet I would like to say Thank You for enriching my life. Janette Pride Member # 44713
Page 6 Sound Rides Volume 13 Issue 8 Ride Report. DWELLINGUP DIRT RIDE Dianna & I had been talking about joining Peter & Alan on one of their dirt bike rides for ages, but something always came up that stopped us. We finally made it a couple of weeks ago, and we are so glad we did. Six of us headed off towards Jarrahdale as the dark clouds started closing in. Alan was on his trusty road bike with a dual purpose tyre on the back. Keith was also on his Suzuki road bike, which he said was like riding a dirt bike after his trip around oz on his 1700 Kawasaki. We cruised over Serpentine dam before heading down the gravel to Oakley dam. I have been down this road before, but had never been to Oakley dam, or even heard of it. There is a great lookout that looks out over the countryside towards the coast. We could see the rain coming in the distance, so jumped back on our bikes and took off towards Dwellingup Blue Wren Café, where the fire was going, and the huge Sausage Rolls had just come out of the oven. All of this with a great mug of coffee, and how could life get any better! We said farewell to Alan & Peter as they turned down some more dirt roads towards Collie, and we opted to head home before the rain arrived. Chris & Dianna.

Page 10 Sound Rides Volume 13 Issue 8 Breakfast Burritos Ingredients (for 1 serving): cooking spray 1 medium tortilla 1-2 eggs, depending on preference 2 bacon strips Optional: onion and green pepper Salt and pepper To make these quick, easy-to-eat breakfast burritos, start by building a bed of hot coals and setting a frying pan on them. Give the pan a shot of cooking spray, and place the bacon strips on it. While the pork s sizzling, use a mixing bowl to whip the eggs and optional chopped onion or peppers together. When the bacon s done, set it aside on a couple of paper towels and pour your egg mixture in the pan. Stir frequently, as the coals will be hotter than the eggs optimum cooking temperature. When they re finished (it should only be 5-10 minutes), lay the already cooked bacon and fresh eggs in the center of your tortilla, salt and pepper to taste, and roll it on up

Page 12 Sound Rides Volume 13 Issue 8 Twelve of us arrived promptly at 8:30am. We were given a manual, learner s guide, question and answer sheet 3weeks prior to read up and pre-answer the questions. So, the first thing was to go through our answers and discuss any wrong answers along with any doubts or queries we may have. Then it was our first role play scenario with Julie as the casualty (or victim). These practical scenarios went on for most of the day and we were tested on these continually. We had a quick cuppa and then it was back to it. Our instructor was very patient and tolerant with all of our little remarks and funny comments, I wonder what he really thinks????!!! Or maybe I shouldn t go there! Sedley fell in love with his new girlfriend and we all practiced CPR, trying different kinds of bandages, slings, tourniquets and pressure bandaging. More tests, scenarios and practice. We learnt about Epi pens and Asthma inhalers all different varieties of possible injuries, allergies, stings, bites, accidents with tools, substance and medical problems. At lunch time we had to go home and get our helmets so we could learn how to remove them safely if necessary, hopefully we won t ever have to. We had a few more tests written and practical and then we were told that we had passed. Now we have 12 branch members qualified for first aid assistance should ever the situation arise.
Page 13 Sound Rides Volume 13 Issue 8 Group Riding Hints / Etiquette Please be aware on the ride calendar that all times stated are the leaving times. Due to circumstances for breakfast / lunch rides there are usually time frame commitments and rides must leave on time unless otherwise stated on the calendar or at the meetings. (All advice and information is given as a guide only. All riders should be licensed and insured. Always observe road rules and ride safely.) 1. Arrive on time for the ride with your tank full. 2 If leaving a ride tell the Ride Leader and Tail-End Charlie and then either leave well before or well after the main group so others don't get confused. 3. Never pass on the left on a single lane road and only pass when safe. 4. Always check your mirror and over your shoulder before overtaking. 5. If you pass the Ride Leader you are on your own. If you miss a corner we won't come looking for you. In some Branches overtaking the leader is not permitted. 6. There is only one person responsible for your safety YOU! Always ride within your limits. 7. Riding in a staggered formation ie: one to the left of the lane, the next rider to the right, gives a greater view of the road ahead. 8. If you spot something on the road ie: a pot hole, a piece of wood etc, point to it with an out stretched arm and the rider behind will be alerted and hopefully avoid it. 9. If you are slowing down, either by using the gears or just easing off the throttle, tap the brakes. Your brake light will come on and alert the rider behind. 10. You should check your tyre tread and pressure and fluid levels before each ride. 11. Try not to keep the group waiting when they are ready to leave. 12. Always leave at least a 2 second gap between you and the vehicle in front. 13. If you are behind slow moving traffic and are not going to over take, keep to the left so that others may pass you safely. 14. After you over take, move to the left hand side of the lane so there is room for the next person to slot in. 15. If you are leading the ride please give everybody 10 mins notice so they have time for toilets and pay for meals etc. 16. It highly recommended that all riders do an advanced rider course (half the cost may be refunded by the Ulysses Club). Chris Glover 4 May 2006
