1 The Official Publication of Prairie Thunder Harley Owners Group Chapter #1951, Wichita, Kansas Volume 20, Issue 8 August 2011 inside this issue Thank You & a Reminder... First, THANK YOU to all of you that are sending in so many pictures for the website, and the newsletter. Just a reminder, however, due to National H.O.G. policy, we can not publish any pictures containing minor children in them. This, obviously, is for their safety and security. Thank you for understanding. -Editor FROM THE DIRECTOR: Hello Everyone, Hope everyone is finding a way to stay cool with this weather that has set in. It's not bad early, but it's damn hot after noon. Had a nice turn out for the Ice Cream social on the 13th for those that didn't make it you missed a nice ride and social time. I would like to do alot more fun meetings like that in the future. I was just reading the officers news from H.O.G., and the one thing that they kept bringing up, was make your meetings fun... and I think we are on the right track with that. We just need to get more riding in. So with that said we are going to be adding a Who Wants To Ride tab on the website. Anybody that wants their name and phone number on this list, please contact Teresa Sauerwein by tsauerwein@cox.net or call her Home phone (316) Cell phone-(316) She will gather this information and forward it to our great webmaster for him to work his magic on and let people know who they can call when they want to ride and the chapter has nothing going on, and all their other riding buddies are soaking up the a/c in this hot weather they can call people on the list and go out riding and make some new friends at the same time. These ARE NOT chapter rides, just people wanting to enjoy riding and find new destinations. September 11th we will be going to Salina to eat breakfast, compliments of Salina H.O.G., and then do a patriot ride to Abilene with Veterans and Flag carriers leading the way! No mater witch chapter your from, this sounds like a great time, so add that to your calendars and I will be getting more Information out to you as it gets a little closer. Ride safe, and ride often, Marv activities, on this date p.2 calendar p.3 safety corner p.4 cruise control, ladies of harley p.5 ridin nekkid...well, almost p.6 ft. hays meets prairie thunder p.7 from the dealership p.8 Puddin s Corner Hey everyone! Puddin s Ghost-Writer here, bringing you Puddin s Corner this month. Puddin and Tammy have been a bit busy, taking care of family...so you re stuck with ME! So, who s here from out of town? Anyone? NO? Okay...moving on. Who would have thought that we d be in the middle of this heat-wave right now! Wow, not me. I mean, it gets hot in Kansas, but come on! The other day, I saw a fire hydrant whistling for a dog... but seriously... stay hydrated with water, or, of you can tolerate the sugar, Gatorade. Alefs 6th Anniversary was sure fun. HOT, but fun. Glad to see the few of you that braved the heat and came out to the chapter meeting before the party. Hopefully our next outdoor adventure will be a bit milder.. Well, that s about all I have for now. Keep riding, everyone. Ride as often as you can. Ride as safely as you can. Because the life you save, may be your own. in those immortal words...lets RIDE! 2 PRAIRIE FIRE Volume 20, Issue 8 August 2011 Page 2 A C T I V I T I E S It s hot and looks like it s planning on staying that way. However, lots of folks are still riding and having fun. In August, we will have supper rides on Friday to Windmill; Becks; When Pigs Fly; Chico s. There is a Saturday ride to Danny Boys in Hutch; then Medicine Lodge; Chicken Annie s in Pittsburg; and Pizza at Scheme. There is also a destination ride scheduled on the 14 th. If you have an idea for a direction for that ride please let Marv, Dave Johnson, David Hyle or any officer know. Meet on the shady side (East) of Alefs at 6 to 6:15 with kickstands up at 6:30, and remember if you are meeting at the restaurant please call the person in charge so that we have accurate numbers for the place. Please mark your calendar and reserve the 24 th of September for a fun activity. There will be more information on that ride next time. Good luck to those still doing the 50 points ride. You still have about 3 months to get it done. Ride and Have Fun, Nichole & Kathryn What s up PT HOG??? The temperature for one!!! Hope everybody has been able to ride, even if it s HOT. I want to thank everybody who volunteered to sell water at Alefs birthday bash. Looks like there are going to be some good rides coming up this month, so lets hope the weather cools off a little bit, so it makes it more enjoyable to ride. Well that s all I have, so lets get out and ride. Ride safe, Randy Booth Volunteer Coordinator 22 years ago: 26 riders and 3 guests attended the Colorado State HOG rally in reckenridge, CO. A favorite ride was the observation run with some beautiful scenery. 15 years ago: The 11the annual MDA ride was attended by 334 motorcycles and over $54,000 was raised for the cause. Burger runs for the month were Taiwan Chinese Restaurant, Carol's Kitchen in Andover, The Best's hosted a Burger fry and a Pool party hosted by Aubrey and Bobbie Hill hosted desert at their home after the burger run to Walt's in Clearwater. 10 years ago: 16 people attended dinner and a show at Mosley Street Melodrama. The Highlight of the evening was when "Richard Simmons" came out wearing his normal shorts, tank top an a pair of pink cowboy boots. I guess you had to be there. 4 years ago: A weekend of camping was planned at Cheney Lake it was sponsored by LOH. Members were encouraged to bring their campers, tents and spend the weekend or just come out for the day. Some of the burger runs were to Perkins on a Saturday, Block 32 in Moundridge and Plaza Grill in Hutch. There was a day ride to Topeka to Prairie Band Casino and a Mystery ride for ice cream. H-D History: The first Harley-Davidson V-Twin appeared in 1909 It was not designed by the American company and Harley-Davidson was not alone in adopting it. But the company kept and improved it. Thanks to its shape -- an upside down triangle -- this engine fitted into a bicycle frame, as was the case of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company "SD" model in Harley-Davidson adopted a forked connecting rod for this first model. The famous V-Twin cylinders were set at 45 degrees with an inlet valve on the head and an exhaust valve on the side. This 2 cylinder engine boasted a displacement of 850 cc (50 cubic inches). This Model a magneto and a 28" wheel as options. It reached speeds of 62 mph. It had no clutch or gear box, AND, you had to shut it off every time you wanted to stop. 4 PRAIRIE FIRE Volume 20, Issue 8 August 2011 Page 4 Hey Gang, hope everyone is having a great summer and getting a lot of riding in...even in all this heat. I know I have. Whatever happened to spring??? Last weekend was the Nation of Patriots flag ride, and it was hot, but everyone managed to have fun anyway. Thanks to Mr. ED for arranging it again this year. Thanks Big Dave for staying with me with my low tire on the way home. New tire time. Some things to think about this month, are the heat, first and foremost. With temps hovering in the 105 deg. range, it is important to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Sound like a broken record don t I, but as the old saying goes: Hydrate, or Die! Gatorade and water are the best. The best rule of thumb is drink until you pea clear. This will head off muscle cramps and fatigue. Cooling wraps are really good because they can be soaked in water and placed around the neck which helps cool the major blood vessels in the neck, which in turn helps keep your body cooler. Also, you should take frequent stops to cool off and hydrate, and for those of you that are thinking its Miller time!...think again... alcohol just speeds up the dehydration process!!! So save it for after the ride. There are several companies who offer hydration vests that can be doused to help cool including some made by the metric bike companies as well as Harley Davidson. With the constant heat, other things that we need to be watchful of, is buckling concrete on the roadway. Recently a rider hit one of these and was thrown from his bike and killed. Concrete can also explode and leave large holes in bridges and highways. Blacktop and tar strips are another hazard as the heat causes the oil to rise to the top and make the surface slick, and the tar strips are raised and becomes slick as well. Blacktop also becomes soft so I suggest that if you don t have a kickstand pad you get one, they are available from many sources and generally free. These will prevent coming out and finding your bike has fallen over. Now, as always, remember...when group riding with our chapter we use hand signals AS WELL AS our turn signals, so that people behind you know what is going on. If you aren t familiar with them and don t have a chapter handbook, let me or one of the Road Captains know and we can get you one. On any chapter group rides we do not make right turns on red. Also, remember that trikes get the full lane and the stagger restarts on the left behind the trike. Going thru a Roundabout no more than two riders at a time and be mindful of other people who are waiting to enter also. That is all for now if you have anything that you would like to have addressed let me know, and I will research it and try to address it in future articles. So for now everyone be safe out there...and keep the shiny side up! David Hyle Safety Officer Safety Corner

5 PRAIRIE FIRE Volume 20, Issue 8 August 2011 Page 5 I have been having a lot of fun with the "50 Point Ride", I hope everyone else has been too. I have even learned a bit more about Kansas history. I recently went to Caldwell to find the Chisholm trail, in my search for the sign I found out that it wasn't where I was expecting to find it. The History of Caldwell is very interesting. The town was established in 1871 on the northern edge of the Indian Territory, now known as Oklahoma. I also learned that the average life expectancy of a Marshall in Caldwell, in that era, was 2 weeks. Making Caldwell one of the most violent of the cow towns of that era. In 1893, Caldwell was also the starting point for the Cherokee land rush, and that is another piece of history that you can find out more for yourself. but, you have to go South to find the marker that the state put up. And in 1995 the city of Caldwell put up another marker, Ghosts of the Chisholm Trail. It is even farther South, almost in OK. When I went to Beaumont, KS to get my photo at the Historic Hotel there, I learned a bit more about the history of that town as well. It was the railroads that brought that town to life, and sadly, also the reason the town is unincorporated today. Enjoy the 50 Point Ride, but don't just take a photo, look and learn a bit. History is more than just what we learned in school. Ride and Have Fun! David Johnson Head Road Captain LOH HOG night at Bravos LOH sponsored the Friday night dinner at Bravos on Friday July 22 nd. Even though the temperatures were above 100, about 25 people enjoyed an Italian meal and door prizes. Sorry, I didn t have a theme for this dinner so I had to make up for it with door prizes. Doreen Koch LOH Officer CRUISE CONTROL Ladies of Harley Articles & Pics Remember, anyone can submit articles, stories, pictures, etc. to the newsletter. Remember to keep it G rated, and about the Chapter, and its members. Send your submissions to: editor@pthog.com The deadline is the 20th of the month for the following months newsletter. 6 PRAIRIE FIRE Volume 20, Issue 8 August 2011 Page 6 Ridin Nekkid to Beat the HEAT! A story about a St. Louis motorcycle rider who has his own, unique way, of beating the heat! As we lost count of how many consecutive days the temperature has eclipsed 100, at least one St. Louis area man has taken self cooling to a new level. Many motorcyclists talk about their love of the wind blowing through their hair. It seems Jacob Southard prefers the wind blowing through almost everything. He s been turning heads on Interstate 70, riding his motorcycle while wearing nothing but a mankini like the one from the Borat movie. Asked what in the world he s doing, Southard, clad in nothing but a neon green singlet that covers his crotch and little else, replies with a laugh. Beatin the heat! he says with a grin. Southard says the whole thing began with what was essentially a dare from his buddies. I m like ya know it s really hot, I really want to just put on a pair of underwear and just ride, and they re like, dude, do the Borat outfit! And I m, like, all right, and here I am! We followed him as he rode out on to Interstate 70. The day before, when he did it the first time, he elicited an explosion of Facebook and Twitter posts. I felt like I was famous with all the cameras, he said. Everybody was just laughing. I guess a couple of old ladies were like, heyyy! But other than that everybody was having a good time. The good time Thursday included what had to be a record number of people trying to take photographs while driving a car at 70 mph. There were a few uncomfortable smiles and plenty of full blown belly laughs. Boy I ll tell ya what, I was getting my phone ready, Larry Terbrock told us after seeing Southard. I was gonna take a picture because I knew no one was gonna believe me. Before hitting the road, Southard had his own questions. First and foremost, would this get him arrested? He asked a cop. I showed him a picture and said, hey, am I gonna go to jail for this? And he said, you re covered up, so, no. Then there was the job situation. Southard, 24, is a loan officer. But there was no worry on that end after his boss saw him out on the highway. Yeah, she actually took a picture going down the highway, he said, and texted me, said, you re a freak! You also might be surprised to know Southard is married, and expects to remain that way. His wife, not surprisingly, was steering clear of television cameras, but Southard says her comment on a Facebook photo said it all. Articles & Pics Remember, anyone can submit articles, stories, pictures, etc. to the newsletter. Remember to keep it G rated, and about the Chapter, and its members. Send your submissions to: She goes, there s no sense in arguing with him, just let him go.; And go he will, back out on the highway feeling the breeze, and drawing the stares. Almost everyone is getting a chuckle out of the near-naked motorcycle rider. Almost everyone. Mom was not happy, he said, but you only live life once, Mom! Smile! Copyright 2011, KTVI-TV

7 Ft. Hays H.O.G. meets Prairie Thunder H.O.G. Wichita Meets Hays June 18, 2011 First, Thank You, to the activities team, Alefs and all the volunteer help!! We had 10 people from the Fort Hays H.O.G. Chapter, Doerfler s HD ride in for Biker Games and some fun. The Prairie Thunder chapter was well represented as well, as we began the day with a meet and greet, on the balcony of Alefs HD. We raffled door prizes, t- shirt, pins, banners (nice banner Nichole), and cool stickers. We also had plenty of cool refreshing drinks and munchies, for everyone. Saturday was also T-95 bike give away for the lucky 95 contestants (only 92 showed) holding keys with a chance to win a Fat Bob. Prairie Thunder H.O.G., had two contestant #46 Peggy (David Hyle s Mother) and #88 Chuck, unfortunately neither had the winning keys, but a couple from Wichita won the bike. We headed on out for the biker games, and had some interesting pairings. We had the slow ride, the balls and cones and the bike tire toss. The slow ride was won by Tim Lang (Fort Hays H.O.G.). The balls and cones was won by Wayne-Jackie (Fort Hays H.O.G.) and finally the bike tire toss was won by Rocky-Pam (Prairie Thunder H.O.G.). The team of SpecEd and Milt made an interesting late entry into the bike tire toss, great job! Thanks for stepping up gentlemen!! We finished the day, with Old Chicago in Old Towne and sitting around the campfire, telling stories. Well we didn t really have a camp fire, but the stories were interesting, while keeping track of the severe weather on our phones. Sunday morning, our fellow Fort Hays H.O.G., members had to get going for home. We started with breakfast at Stearman Field, Benton, Kansas they let us park on the runway/taxiway again, what a special treat. We had 19 for breakfast and goodbyes to our Hays friends See you in a few weeks, when we return the visit, to Hays!! Submitted by Jeff L.

8 FROM THE DEALERSHIP: A HUGE THANKS to everyone that came out to our 6th Birthday Bash! Whether you were there as a volunteer or just as a spectator, we hope everyone had a great time. Drop us a line and let us know how we did. We also want to send a big Alefs thank you to Jack and Margret Argo. They stepped up to help us out with our grilling during one of the HOTTEST days of July. We really couldn't have done without you two!! THANK YOU! If you're headed to Sturgis, be sure to have your bike checked out to make sure it's "road ready". Ask the MotorClothes staff for your own "Sturgis Checklist" so you don't forget any of those important last minute items. Our FALL OPEN HOUSE will be Sept this year and we will have the Harley-Davidson demo fleet here so you can jump on the new 2012 Harleys. If you are interested in volunteering as a Lead/Trail Rider or can assist with Orientation, call Milt at or mmounts@alefshd.com. Finally, during the crazy heat, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Know your body and know when it's unsafe to continue to ride in the heat.
