1 Happy Valentines February 2013 Tom & Daria Durham s E-type Roadster A Jaguar Love Affair Daria and I both grew up in a bit of a car culture and it has certainly been a major common interest. When Daria's brother went away to college she inherited" (appropriated) and honed her driving skills on his 1956 racing Corvette as her daily driver. Later when I first met her, Daria was driving a spiffy Fiat 124 Spider. And oh yes...daria was just as attractive as her cars. When we got married in1971 I made Daria sell her Fiat and it was a great break for her. First, those cars were made with high iron content steel, and shortly after she sold the car it started to rust badly. Second, she was able to remind me often that I made her sell her sports car. Then in 1994 when we bought our first Jaguar, a 1953 XK120. While it cost us a whole lot more than we thought to restore it, the car turned out to be beautiful, and so we decided to join the Illinois Jaguar Club so we could show it. Joining the club was more rewarding than we expected, as we met so many nice people and made so many good friends in the Jaguar Club. Over the years we have had a total of seven Jaguars and we have been quite active in the Illinois Club. As our interest turned more to driving we bought the XKE in 1999 and shortly thereafter we started organizing the first overnight drives for that Club. We also restored the XKE and continued showing in the Driven class, and in 2005 the car received a 1st place JCNA National award. We also began taking longer drives out of Illinois in the XKE to destinations such as Jaguar events in Colorado, old Route 66, the Red Rock Ralley in Utah, etc. What fun it was. So when we bought a place in Tucson, there was no doubt about what would be fun.bring the XKE. When some people move to new cities they often join a church to help them meet friends, but we thought it would be a pretty good bet to join the Jaguar Club of Southern Arizona. Our high expectations have been more than met. Our only regret is that we only live part time in Tucson and we have been unable to spend more time in Arizona with this wonderful group of people. 2 President s Message 2 With the start of the New Year, your JCSA board s first order of business was to find a new location for our "First Wednesday" dinners. One of our members drove by Ric's just a little less than a week before our first meeting of the year and advised the Board that Ric's Cafe had closed. Sadly, Ric's will not be reopening at its current location and it doesn't sound like the owner will be opening another restaurant anytime soon (if at all). So, it looks like 2013 is going to be a year of trying out new places until we can find a good "parking spot". My plan is to try at least 4 restaurants and possibly more, but in all fairness we need to give a place 2-3 tries to see if it will work. I scrambled for our first dinner on January 2nd and found Wilbur's Grill in the Viscount Hotel on Broadway. While it wasn't a total bust, the consensus from the survey taken that evening is that we need to keep looking. We will be holding our Wednesday dinner on February 6 at Wilbur's Grill again, with cocktails starting at 5:00. For this meeting, we will be inside the bar area (in our own section) due to the gem show being in town. I just want to warn you, it's going to be busy and service could be slow but I've been reassured by the Food & Beverage Manager that she will have additional staffing during that time period. If you're interested in coming early to do a little shopping at the gem shoe, the Viscount is hosting a "bead" show and it will be open to the public. It is expected to wrap up between 5pm and 6pm. Second order of business was to get some events in place. We decided to concentrate on the first half of the year (with the exception of the Concours d'elegance) and we'll plan the balance of the year at our next Board Meeting on Saturday March 2nd. We've got some interesting and different events planned. Check the events calendar elsewhere in the newsletter and on our website Now for some fun stuff! The board agreed to get involved with a charity organization. The one we've selected is YOTO (Youth on Their Own). Take a look at their website I think you'll agree this is a very worthwhile organization. To support this organization we're going to have a 50/50 raffle at each of our First Wednesday s dinners beginning with our dinner on February 6. You'll be able to buy a raffle ticket for $1. You may purchase as many tickets as you like. The more you purchase, the more chances of having your name drawn as the winner. The winner will be awarded at the dinner with 50% of the total collected monies. The other 50% will then go to YOTO. We will present YOTO with a check at the end of the year from the proceeds collected throughout the year. I hope you ll take the opportunity in 2013 to participate with the board and other club members on some or all of our events and/or dinners we have planned and those still to be planned. 3 Minutes of Board Meeting Held on Saturday, January 12 3 The first meeting of 2013 of the JCSA Board of Directors was held at noon at Royal Jaguar on Jan 20th. In attendance were Diana Raymond, Doug Dechant, Richard Mandziac, Herbie & Claire Hampton, Jake Jacob, Fred & Maggie Secker, Dan Eklund and Darrell Anderson. It was decided that, in the future, the first meeting agenda item would be to approve the minutes of the previous meeting, as this is normally standard procedure. Treasurer s Report Herbie presented the Treasurer s Report. Current balance was $5,528.78, with near-term expected additional expenditures of approximately $1,000. Expenditures for the previous year were recapped, including the cost of each event/activity. As an aside, it was mentioned that Doug would henceforth pick up the hard copy of our newsletter directly from the printer, and deliver the required copies to Royal. Jake was reminded of the necessity to file an annual report with the Corporation Commission as a nonprofit (Note: It was filed last year on 4/14/12, but I apparently didn t send the bill to Herbie). There have been only 28 membership renewals to date; we need to remind our members to renew. Old Business The mystery drive to brunch at Tanque Verde Guest Ranch is scheduled for Sunday, Jan 20th. A drive to Sonoita for lunch at the Stakeout Inn, and wine tasting at the Sonoita Winery, is scheduled for Sunday, Feb 17th. It was decided to continue our December Christmas Party and monthly 1st Wed. dinner. In the coming year, we need to try several restaurants on Wednesdays before deciding on a regular meeting place. We will use Wilbur s again in February, as the Tucson Gem Show will be running and it may be difficult to get reservations elsewhere. Wilbur s can accommodate us in the bar area. Also, we need to mingle for drinks somewhere first, before proceeding to our tables. New Business Discussed a letter from out-of-town member Mike Mullen, which presented several ideas for increasing member participation in events. We are always open to suggestions in this area Events Schedule Except for the Concours, we will schedule events only 2 quarters out; events further out than that will be determined at our March meeting. Discussed a March event involving a poker run, lunch and a tour of the Franklin Auto Museum; April: Car Show at DMAFB; May: Possible tour to Mt Graham Observatory; June: Father s Day picnic at Lake Patagonia. It is hard to set a minimum participation figure to use in deciding whether or not to continue an event. Need to set up an activities/driving committee; Bill Badger will only do HPDE, and only if that event is continued. Discussed having an incentive to encourage participation in events. Diana has some donated artwork, to be awarded to the member who participates in the most events in Need to work out the details. We will continue publishing the newsletter monthly. Ric s ad should be removed. Royal Jaguar s ad should be free. Discussed places to hold an HPDE, and/or slalom and/or go-kart racing. Fred Secker will research. Discussed possibly doing something with Royal to promote the new F-Type; no decision was made. The meeting was adjourned at We will meet again Saturday, March 2nd. 5 Wine Tasting at Sonoita 5 Sunday February 17 Warm-up with a great drive, Lunch and Wine tasting! On Sunday February 17 at 10:30am we will be meeting at the Chevron Plaza at the Wilmot Road exit on I-10 where we plan to drive to Sonoita for a luncheon at the Steak Out Inn and then a wine tasting at the beautiful Sonoita Vineyards. For the first part of the drive we will take the Old Sonoita Highway which is perfect for our Jaguars. This is truly a great drive through some of the most beautiful country in Arizona. Once in Sonoita we will enjoy a lunch served up by the Steak Out Inn. The Steak Out has two locations in Arizona, one in Sonoita and one at Dove Mountain and offer great food. From there we will drive through Arizona wine country to the Sonoita Winery, one of the largest wineries in the state. The wine tasting is $8 and includes a beautiful Sonoita Wine Glass that you keep. You will be given a map of the area which provides the locations of a number of the more popular wineries. Therefore if you decide to continue your wine tasting after our visit to the Sonoita Winery, keep the glass and you will be given a discount at the other wineries you visit. I have to provide the Steak Out with the number of you attending so please RSVP with me at ddechant@wbhsi.net no later than Tuesday February 12th. I am looking forward to seeing you on the 17 th! Should it rain on the 17 th, we will move the event to the 24 th Doug Dechant Is Something Broke? If you don't know something is broke, you can't fix it. Doug Dechant, our former President, is now the membership chairman for JCSA and membership vice chair for JCNA. In our discussions as he passed the "Leaping Jaguar" (or baton, if you will) to me, we talked about how we could get not only more participation, but also more members. The only way we know how to improve things are by hearing what you have to say. At our First Wednesday dinner of the year I did a very short survey of Wilbur's Grill (5 questions with a comment section available). Out of 31 people 25 responsed. I think that's a pretty good response. Out of the 25 responses, here were the results: 9 thought the food was good, 4 did not and 12 thought it was okay 24 thought the price point was okay and 1 had no response 22 thought the drive was okay, 1 thought it was too long and 2 had no response 24 thought the atmosphere was okay and 1 had no response 24 thought the parking was okay and 1 had no response Of the additional comments the two that topped the list were (1) slow service and (2) that our members want a place to mingle first before dinner. Given that the survey seemed to work as long as it was done immediately, I will be doing more surveys. I promise to make them brief...no more than 5 questions and they won't be the same repetitive questions. You don't have to sign them. It's the only way we can find out if we're pleasing those that are attending. So, if you see a survey show up at a dinner or event, please take a couple of minutes to fill it out. And for those of you who are not attending, it would be most helpful to know why? What would make you enjoy the club more? For those responses you can contact Doug Dechant directly either by phone ( ) or ddechant@wbhsi.net. Thanks, Diana
6 Report Mystery Drive & Tanque Verde Lunch January 20, 2013 A Perfect End To A Perfect Day 6 Although I no longer am an avid follower of professional sports, being a native San Franciscan, I still root for the S.F. Giants in baseball (World Series Winner) and the S.F. Forty-niners of the NFL. Sunday we arrived home in time to see the Niners beat the Atlanta Falcons for the NFC Championship and the right to play in the Superbowl. GO NINERS!!!. But I digress; I realize many of you are not the least interested in professional football, let alone root for the San Francisco teams. So let me get back to the beginning of the day, which was a beautiful one, weather-wise. Who would have thought that earlier in the week we were shivering in below freezing temperatures, with frozen water pipes and frost killed plants. We gathered at the Starbuck s parking lot at the corner for Grant and Swan, ten or eleven Jaguars strong for the Mystery Drive. We left about five minutes late from our planned start time because we, me included were having such a good time talking to fellow club members. We were off, being led by my XK140 Jag(top down) on the Mystery Drive that I call the neighborhood drive. We wove through some of the foothills and Sabino Canyon neighborhoods and then out to northeast Tucson via some lesser known roads and through several really nice areas nearer to Redington Pass. Coming back via Tanque Verde and Tanque Verde Loop we proceeded to Speedway and the Tanque Verde Guest Ranch, where we had front row parking, which was unexpected, as two other car clubs, the Model T club and the Studebaker club were also having a brunch there. The drive took about one hour and twenty minutes so we arrived a bit earlier than our reservation time, but we were all pretty hungry so after saying hello to a few members that were attending the brunch, but not the drive, we headed into the dining hall, and the ranch people were ready for us, and so we started on some serious chowing down. The Tanque Verde Guest Ranch had added some great fish dishes to the menu since we had been there last, which included fresh shrimp, oysters on the half-shell and braised salmon steaks in a lemon caper sauce. This was in addition to the sliced to order prime rib and their other assorted dishes and salads. Needless to say, I only heard good things about the meal and no complaints about the price increase to $20.00 per person. The meal was well worth the price. I would like to thank all the members that participated in the Mystery Drive and Tanque Verde Brunch this year. You made this event a great success. And for those members that missed this year, be sure to put it on your calendar for next year, and I will try to find another interesting drive and the Tanque Verde Guest Ranch has one of the best meals you could experience. Herbie Hampton It s all a great mystery to me?!

8 Renewal - Renewal - Renewal 8 For all of you that have already sent in your membership renewal for 2013, I thank you very much. For those of you that have been procrastinating, Please, Please, Please, get your checks in the mail ASAP. If you have read your latest Jaguar Journal (the issue that just came in the mail) you might have noticed the article on club renewals. It seems that the JCNA has advanced the date for member clubs to renew. It is now January 31, And naturally in order for that to happen, we need our current members to renew before the end of January. However it is still not too late. Please get your renewal check in the mail ASAP, so that you don t end up being dropped off the JCNA roster. The JCNA is raising its national dues from $22.00 a year, which it had been for a long time, to $30.00 a year, starting with the 2013 renewals. Since our club raised its local dues last year from $60.00 to $65.00 a year in order to have a little more operating capital on hand, the board has decided to absorb the JCNA cost increase from its own share of the dues. This means that we will have even less funds for local club s expenses than before last year s increase, but the renewal cost for club members will remain the same as last year, $ So if you are looking forward to the Wine Tasting Tour or any of our other great events, you need to send your check in NOW!!!! If you just enjoy a leisurely dinner and friendly conversation at our monthly 1st Wednesday dinners the club needs your support, so please renew today. Make out your check for $65.00 to JCSA and get it in the mail to: Herbie Hampton, Treasurer, JCSA E. 11 11 Event Alert! Get ready for another fun club event on Saturday, March 16 th. We are planning a visit to the Franklin Auto Museum followed by a lunch at the Union Pub & Grill in St. Phillip s Plaza. This event will be surrounded by a poker rally drive. The Franklin Auto Museum specializes in the historic Franklin Automobile, and has one of the most extensive collections of Franklin cars in the country. Admission to the Museum is $5.00 per person. The lunch at the Union Pub & Grill will be ordered off the menu with individual checks. The tour of the Museum will be starting a 10:00 am with lunch at the Pub and Grill scheduled for Noon. The drive is still in the planning stages, with further details coming in the March Newsletter, but for those who are not familiar with what a Poker Rally is, it is a drive with posted stops where each car will get a playing card, until they each have 5 cards and whoever has the best five card poker hand will win a prize. So this is a chance to do many fun things in one event, drive your Jaguars, play a little poker, see a great auto museum, have a nice lunch and most of all, be able to socialize with fellow club members.
