(Vietnam Investment Review, 5-11/03/2018) City to treat 80% of household wastewater Rapid population growth and urbanization have created great pleasure on the environment, especially the city s water source. The amount of domestic waste water generated daily is around 1.75 million cubic metres but with only 2 treatments plants, the city is only able to treat 10% of its wastewater. In the city plans to build four more plants: the Saigon West Sewage Treatment Plant with a capacity of 150,000 cum/day, the Tan Hoa Lo Gom Plant with capacity of 300,000 cum, the Binh Tan plant in Binh Hung Hoa with a capaicty of 180,000 cum and North Saigon 1 Plant with a capacity of 170,000 cum. 3 European business moderately confident about Vietnam market According to Eurocham s Business Climate Index (BCI) for the fourth quarter of 2017, more than 62% of surveyed companies had good and excellent business performance and 70% said they are confident about the Vietnamese market. Besides, nearly 19% of surveyed companies looked to invest significantly in Vietnam while 30% would expand investment moderately. Only 5% said they will scale down investment activity. 84% believed inflation will have either no impactor just little impact. Despite the optimistic business outlook, there are still a number of challenge such as the enforcement of intellectual property right law, and slow retification progress of EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement. The 400m2 store offers over 3,000 products including personal care, body care and baby care product, as well as beauty and health-related products of both domestic and foreign brands. (Vietnam News, 12/03/2018) EU reinforcement electrifies Vietnam s rural zones In June 2018, the EU will disburse a sum of EUR 40 million to provide Vietnam s millions of rural households with electricity access. This sum is part of a EUR 108 million EU-VN energy program aiming to enhance access to sustainable energy in Vietnam s rural areas, this program contributes to a more sustainable energy sector by promoting efficient, clean, and renewable energy available to all citizens. (Vietnam Investment Review, 12-18/03/2018) CPTPP details unveiled The long-awaited Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) was signed on 08/03/2018 by 11 countries (Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Newzealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam). For the CPTPP, the largest growth in output is estimated to be in food, beverage, tobacco, clothing, leather, textile. It is expected to stimulate reform in areas such as competition, services (including financial services, telecoms, and temporary entry of service providers), customs, e commerce, environment, government procurement, intellectual property, 3

4 investment, labour standards, legal issues, market access for goods, rules of origin, non-tariff measures, and trade remedies. (Vietnam Investment Review, 12-18/03/2018) Local consumers spend heavily on snacks and beer Vietnam is experiencing one of its fastest economic expansiion in years. It also boasts one of the fastest growing fast moving consumer goods industries in Asia at 5.9% in the year to date. Snack is leading the pack in growth, followed by beer and healthy food drinks. Energy drinks and femine care follow closely behind. Beer consumption in Vietnam topped 4 bil liters last year. (Saigon Times Daily, 14/03/2018) Vietnam imports 2,300 tons of US, Australia beef Vietnam spent some US$ 15 mil to import nearly 2,300 tons of beef from Australia and the United States in the first two months of this year. In 2017, the country had imported 210 tons of beef ribs and 3,901 tons of boneless beef from Australia, while it had imported 6,085 tons of boneless beef and 353 tons of beef ribs from the US. Also in 2017, Vietnam imorted over 6,500 tons of pork worth US$ mil and more than 81,000 tons of poutry meat, valued at over US$ 75,7 mil. Last year, the nation imported 262,321 units of live cattle and nearly 42,000 tons of beef worth US$ 410 mil. (Vietnam News, 15/03/2018) Mekong Delta a magnet for major seaport projects In anticipation of growing trade, foreign investment flow into seaport projects in Vietnam has been increasing, with the Mekong Delta being a major destination. Rent-A-Port, Belgium s leading group in port and green energy seeks support for the plan to build an inland transport waterway and ports. Cold storage and container systems at inland waterway ports can be developed to gather farm produce. Also the group sought the Ministry of Transport s approval to invest in an inland waterway port associated with seaports at Hai Phong International Gateway Port Industrial Zone on Cat Hai Island in the northern port city of Hai Phong. France s International Local Development Consortium initiated the US$ 6 bil deep sea port project for handling 200,000 deadweight ton vessels in Soc Trang Province. (Vietnam Investment Review, 19-25/03/2018) Local wood industry lacking raw materials Vietnam s wood industry faces a quandary as bright export growth prospects are clouded by difficulties in finding the necessary raw materials. Export of wood products from Vietnam will increase significantly, even for a country that is already the world s third largest and ASEAN s biggest wooden furniture exporters. Import of wood materials amounted to just over US$ 2.1 bil in (Vietnam News, 27/03/2018) 4
