22 NATU R E Wildlife and conservation Endangered kiwi and other native birds including the King Shag thrive on predator-free islands in the Marlborough Sounds, as well as tuatara, gecko and native frogs. The sheltered waters hold five species of dolphin, stingrays, seals, little blue penguins and even orca and whales on their annual migration. Back on dry land, the Picton Museum hosts rich stories of the region s whaling history. Other interesting places include the birdlife at the Wairau Lagoons, the bats at Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve and the immersive wildlife experience, including an underwater observatory at Lochmara Lodge. 38 Plan and Book MarlboroughNZ.com/nature Walk to the top of Motuara Island via penguin nesting boxes, curious robins and fantails, and glimpses of saddlebacks, tui and kakariki. Kayak or walk around the historic Wairau Lagoons, spotting more than 90 bird species including the Royal Spoonbill. Swim with or view dolphins on a memorable cruise, and view an array of wildlife along the way. 39
