I hope you have some relaxing and fun activities planned for the holiday period. If you are going travelling or returning home for the holidays, travel safely. If you are staying in Sydney, there are lots and lots of great things you can do which won t cost you an arm and a leg. You can visit the Art Gallery, the different museums in Sydney (the Powerhouse, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Australian Museum and many others. 2 Re-O-Week: 30 July to 3 August 2007 Re-O-Week is the Semester 2 equivalent of O-Week. It runs during Week 2, and is packed with fun activities and events along with information to help you get acquainted with the University. Re-O-Week is also your chance to grab hold of all the opportunities this campus has in store for you. The week of activities peaks with Re-O-Day on Wednesday 1 August where USU will play host to around 100 Clubs & Societies in Manning House. There will be stalls, music and entertainment from 10am - 3pm. It is an ideal time to meet students and join one of the many Clubs on offer in a relaxed and fun environment. Re-O-Week is a key week on campus and is designed to assist you in seeking out information about Uni services, activities and facilities most relevant to you. For more information go to Australian Discussion Groups The Australian Discussion Groups give international students studying at the University of Sydney a chance to make friends with local students and learn about Australian cultural and way of life, while increasing their self-confidence in their spoken English. For the local students it gives them a chance to meet cool and interesting people from all around the world, learn different languages and help the international students to feel a sense of belonging to the University community. The Australian Discussion Groups take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in the Wentworth building on Level 4 between 3 p.m.and 6 p.m. Each group last for one hour but participants are welcome to stay longer. 5 Sporting Clubs at Sydney Uni Sport Sydney Uni sport currently has over 40 sporting clubs on campus. These clubs cover a wide range of interests and activities from competitive to non-competitive. These include Rugby Union, Kendo, Waterski & Wakeboarding, and Archery just to name a few. If you re interested in finding out more about sporting clubs on campus then check out the Sydney Uni Sport website or contact the Sports Development Officer on Australian University Sport Events Want to represent Sydney University and compete against other Australian Universities? Then why not get involved in Australian University Sport Events. Sydney University is represented at Australian University Games, and Australian University Championships. These are inter university sporting competitions which include social events. They are a great opportunity to represent your University; you will meet people from all over Australia as well as people you share your campus with. Upcoming Australian University Sport Events Aust University Games Australian University Games involves 30 different sports in a single sporting event. The 2007 Australian University Games will be held from the of September on the Gold Coast with 30 sports being contested. Participants will be able to compete in: Athletics, Australian Rules Football, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Cross Country, Cycling, Fencing, Golf, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Kendo, Lawn bowls, Netball, Rowing, Rugby Union 7 s, Soccer, Softball, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Ten Pin Bowling, Touch, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball and Water Polo. 7 Activities during Orientation Social activities offered during Orientation include: Walk to Water - Wednesday 18 July, pm. A great orientation of the local neighborhood. Discover pubs, live music, fish markets, crab racing, cheap beers, Chinatown and lots more. Gain some insights into Aussie culture and history. Finish at the cool Cargo Bar in Darling Harbour for a free drink. $7 for invaluable info. Wine & Whale Weekend - Saturday 21 Sunday 22 July. Two days checking out the best. In the famous Hunter Valley you ll enjoy the good life visiting award wining wineries, eating and drinking to your hearts content! Blow your head off with some chilli schnapps and then it s off to Newcastle, the surf & shipping town which knows how to party! Sunday is sailing on beautiful catamaran out to sea to be among the humpback whales as they return to Antarctica with their calves (babies). Back in Port Stephens check out the local wild dolphins. Back on dry land we check out a 30 km long beach and go sand sliding down huge dunes! 8 EXHIBITIONS AT SYDNEY UNIVERSITY MUSEUMS Nicholson Museum Australia s largest museum of archaeological antiquities with permanent displays of artefacts from Egypt, Greece, Italy, Cyprus and the Middle East. Current and Coming Exhibitions: Faces of Power: Imperial Portraiture on Roman Coins: The history of the Roman Empire through its coinage (until 4 September) Irrawang: Artefacts from a 19th century colonial pottery factory in NSW Hunter Valley (16 September 9 December) Unearthed Tales: Secrets and stories from the Nicholson collection (on-going) Macleay Museum A museum of natural history, ethnography and cultural history. As well as permanent displays from the collection, current exhibitions include: Rational Order: Carl von Linne ( ): An exhibition about Linnaeus, the developer of biological classification system. (Until 20 October). Murawari Works Roy Barker Jr: Artefacts made by Australian indigenous artist Roy Barker Jr. (24 July-28 October) University Art Gallery Home of the University of Sydney s art collection. Current and Coming Exhibitions: Dreaming Spires and Ivory Towers: an exhibition of paintings and photographs showcasing the wide variety of architectural styles at the University (until 5 August). Chartres Lloyd Rees: Paintings and drawings by Australian artist Lloyd Rees depicting the great Gothic cathedral at Chartres in France (25 August 4 November). 8

10 Get involved in Sport & USYD in Semester 2! Recreation Courses Our Recreation program has a huge range of activities to get you fit, skilled and energised! Whether it be short courses, adventures and short breaks, accreditation courses or coaching clinics; we have all the bases covered. Semester 2 Courses include: Short Courses: Bellydancing, Fencing for beginners & intermediates, Hip Hop/ Funk, Kickboxing, Pilates and Sailing for beginners and intermediates Coaching Clinics: Tennis for beginners and Golf for beginners & intermediates Accreditation Courses: Scuba Diving (Open Water Certificate) and Senior First Aid Short Breaks: Learn to Surf Weekend with Surf Camp Australia NEW Courses: Street Latin Dance Fitness Salsa for Beginners & Intermediates All courses are run during semester and are open to both USYD students and members of the general public. Sydney Uni Sport members receive a 20% discount on the Courses. Online enrolments open Monday 2nd July. Places are limited so enrol early to avoid disappointment! 12 Become an ISSU Volunteer!! Every Orientation the ISSU relies on the help of volunteers to welcome new students to our University. From the feedback we received, many volunteers found the experience very rewarding and made many new friends in the process. We are looking for friendly, reliable and culturally- sensitive volunteers to join the team of international student volunteers and together, help the ISSU with the Semester 2, 2007 International Orientation on July. Volunteer tasks include welcoming students, minding information stalls, campus tour guiding and general administrative duties. If you have the following... - Understanding of new international student needs - Clear communication - Cross-cultural sensitivity - Initiative - Responsible and professional work attitude - Understanding of general ISSU and University services (This is not an essential requirement as training will be provided. However, an overall understanding of services will be helpful)....please me at L.Tan@issu.usyd.edu.au as soon as possible. I would like to hear what experiences or skills you may have that meet these selection criteria. Successful volunteers will be required to attend a training session in early July

13 Senior First Aid Sydney University Sport in partnership with the Cynergex Group offers nationally accredited and WorkCover approved Senior First Aid Courses for everyone! The one-day course is conducted on campus and will provide participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to deal with common accidents and injuries. The course certifies participants for three years and is offered as a mix-mode delivery with face-to-face learning combined with a distance education package (written workbook). The workbook must be completed prior to attending the practical training session.
