4 The Townsville North Queensland Edutourism Consortium The Townsville North Queensland Edutourism Consortium is made up of world class research institutions (James Cook University and the Australian Institute of Marine Science), natural resource management agencies (The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority) and high standard, nature based, experiential learning facilitators. Reef HQ Aquarium is the Australian Government s National Education Centre for the Great Barrier Reef and the world s largest living coral reef aquarium. Through the perfect combination of international education and tourism, the Consortium members work together to develop specialised programs to meet teaching, learning and experience requirements. 4

7 11 Day Itinerary Townsville North Queensland Alumni This all inclusive nature based experience is led by educators from a consortium made up of world class research institutions (James Cook University and the Australian Institute of Marine Science), natural resource management agencies (The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority) and high standard, nature based, experiential learning facilitators. Your group will experience some of the most visually stunning Australian environments; it will most truly be a feast for the senses. A guided city sights tour including 360 degree views of the city from the top of Castle Hill and lunch on the city s award winning beach front The Strand before being transferred to your accommodation for the evening. Kick-start your day with a classic buffet breakfast offering everything from eggs cooked to order, grilled bacon, sausages, tomatoes, hash browns, fresh fruit, cereals, pastries, fresh juices and more. Joined by your nature guide on your private coach, visit the mountains and Australian outback that surrounds Townsville. Lunch - Visit the The Herveys Range Tea Rooms and enjoy lunch in one of North Queensland s oldest buildings. Constructed in 1865, this heritage listed building still stands and the internal hand adzed hardwood still can be enjoyed today. We then travel to the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), Australia s premier tropical marine research agency. AIMS plays a pivotal role in providing large-scale, long-term and world-class research that helps governments, industry and the wider community to make informed decisions on the management of Australia s marine estate. While at AIMS your groups will have the opportunity to meet some of Australia s most eminent marine researchers and visit the National Sea Simulator (SeaSim) a world-class marine research aquarium facility for tropical marine organisms in which scientists can conduct cutting-edge research not previously possible in Australia. Return to Townsville for an evening at Australia s international award winning brewery. Tour of the micro-brewery and presentation from the master brewers, then relax while sampling an ice cold beer which has been brewed and bottled only metres (a few feet) away. Reef HQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium Reef HQ Aquarium is the world s largest living coral reef aquarium and the Australian Government s National Education Centre for the Great Barrier Reef. Join the Education Team at Reef HQ Aquarium on a journey of discovery. This innovative reef education program allows participants to meet and interact with Marine Park experts responsible for managing one of the world s largest marine protected areas and develop a fuller understanding of the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem and the animals and plants that call it home. Visit Reef HQ Aquarium s Turtle Hospital which provides a dedicated facility where sick and injured marine turtles can be cared for and rehabilitated. The hospital operates under and promotes the C.A.R.E (Conserve. Act. Rehabilitate. Educate) philosophy, playing a key role in raising community awareness in relation to threatened species and encouraging behavioural change that will benefit the environment. During this truly inspirational experience discover more about marine turtles the ancient mariners of the sea. On your behind the scenes tour, learn how Reef HQ Aquarium staff keep the aquarium s living exhibits healthy and how they monitor the conditions that are required to maintain a Living Coral Reef on Land. You will also learn about Reef HQ Aquarium s captive breeding and coral propagation programs. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority s Rapid Monitoring Program is the latest citizen science (community monitoring tool) that enables community members to participate in monitoring the health of the Great Barrier Reef. The strength of the program is that it can be used either at the same site repeatedly for monitoring changes over time or it can be deployed anywhere on coral reefs to get a snapshot of reef health. Participate in in-water training within Reef HQ Aquarium s Coral Reef Exhibition and be instructed in the simplified steps and use of diagrams on underwater slates. The Rapid Monitoring Program can easily be adopted by people who may not have a scientific background however the data collected provides enough detail to be of scientific value for reef managers. Museum of Tropical Queensland Discover the history of tropical Queensland and experience an amazing and engaging behind the scenes tour of the Museum of Tropical Queensland. The White Glove Tour offers an exclusive glimpse into the collection, research and interpretation of the Museum s world renowned natural, cultural and maritime history artefacts. Today you have the opportunity to put your Citizen Science - Reef Health Assessment Training into practice or just have some fun! The Central Section of the Great Barrier Reef, off-shore from Townsville, has some of the best sites for diving and snorkelling. Your group will experience it on board the custom built vessel M.V. Adrenalin designed with your comfort in mind, with fully shaded areas, sun deck, stabilisers, toilet, and shower, along with easy access in and out of the water. Our preferred reef for day trips is Lodestone Reef. We have chosen this reef for its diversity of sites, great coral cover, fishlife and reasonable protection. We have a number of sites around this reef and will choose the best site on the day. Features include large coral bommies with white coral sandy sea floor, large gutters running through the coral occupied by hundreds of reef fish, and colourful coral walls occupied by innumerable marine animals in crystal clear water. Depths at Lodestone range from 1 metre (3 feet) to 20 metres (60 feet) making it ideal for snorkelers, beginner and experienced divers. Big schools of trevally and bait fish are common as well as a myriad of colourful reef fish including parrot fish, angel fish, Maori wrasse, and clownfish. Turtles, stingrays, white tip and black tip reef sharks are often sighted. Both snorkelers and divers will be exhilarated witnessing the spectacular marine life that Lodestone has to offer whilst being immersed in tropical crystal clear water. All snorkelling and snorkelling equipment is included. Scuba diving is an optional extra and can be determined by individuals according to their desires and skill levels. DAY 5 World Heritage Wet Tropics Rainforest, Ecosystem Adventure O/N Breakfast Aqua Restaurant, Jupiters Townsville Hotel & Casino. Today you will be met by your expert Wet Tropics Certified Guide. Paluma Range National Park is a rainforest haven located approximately 60 minutes drive north of the city of Townsville. Your group will enjoy magnificent panoramic views from various lookouts along the Paluma Range as you travel up from the eucalyptus dominated coastal plain to the rainforest. Paluma is an eco-tourism paradise with a wide array of wildlife and birdlife that call this World Heritage listed rainforest habitat home. Wallaman Falls Australia s longest single drop waterfall is located in the Girringun National Park the largest national park within the Heritage listed Wet Tropics Rainforest of North Queensland and one of the oldest continual surviving rainforests on earth with many endangered plants and animals. The grandeur of the surrounding rock formation and the plunging gorges and water falling a staggering 268 metres (804 feet) into a large pool below is a magnificent, breathtaking sight you really must see for yourself to truly appreciate just how impressive it is. 9 DAY 6 Birds, Platypus & Nocturnal Secrets of the Australian Bush O/N Breakfast Hidden Valley Cabins. Ideal for nature and adventure enthusiasts, your group will spend the day bird watching in Hidden Valley and Paluma Range National Park. Your expert guides have recorded over 130 species of birds in the area and are waiting to introduce them to you. Hidden Valley has been voted by Australian Geographic as the number one spot to view a Platypus in the wild! This animal is a wonder of nature it has a bill and webbed feet, yet is covered in fur. It is an egg laying mammal known as a monotreme. Hidden Valley boasts a population of 300 platypus along an 11 kilometre (6.8 miles) stretch of Running River with a 98 percent sighting success rate. Hidden Valley, and the Australian bush that surrounds it, boasts an abundance of other animals which are commonly seen after dark. Common sightings include owls, spiders, pretty face wallabies, bettongs, rock wallabies, brush tail possums and greater gliders. DAY 7 Culture and History of Mungalla Station and the Nywaigi People O/N Breakfast Hidden Valley Cabins. Queensland Tourism Hall of Fame - Come and meet the Nywaigi Aboriginal people, the Traditional Owners of the lands around Ingham in North Queensland. Experience the rich culture and history. Learn of the often brutal conflict between Nywaigi Aboriginal people and European settlers that shaped the destiny of North Queensland. Experience the Mungalla wetlands which have been restored from the depredation of introduced weeds and are now home to the magnificent aquatic birdlife of North Queensland. Be amazed by the story of the Aboriginal people from Mungalla Station and surrounding areas who were exhibited as cannibals and savages in the nineteenth century circuses and sideshows of Europe and America. This powerful story is told through an internationally renowned pictorial exhibition housed permanently in the historic homestead. Try your hand at throwing a boomerang and making it come back. The stunning landscapes of this World Heritage listed island make this natural destination truly distinctive and attractive to the eco-conscious traveller. The rocky granite headlands endemic to the area provide a basis to an array of eco systems that merge with the 23 bays and beaches surrounding its coastline. Visit Northern Australia s largest population of koalas in the wild on The Forts walk, hike onto stunning beaches and learn from passionate rangers the beauty of this island and the wildlife inhabitants that call it home. Discover Magnetic Island first hand with local rangers from Bungalow Bay Koala Village, putting you up close and personal with crocodiles, wombats and koalas. Fresh local produce will be showcased through the day whilst enjoying an intimate island experience in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. To cap off your day with nature, enjoy champagne cocktails with koalas and sample the tapas style menu which introduces the native products indigenous to the area. 11 7 Day / 6 Night Metropolitan Community College OMAHA North Queensland Edutourism Study Tour Hidden Valley Cabins and Tours, Reef HQ Aquarium, Billabong Sanctuary, Bungalow Bay Koala Village Townsville lies in the Dry Tropics Region, of Queensland, Australia which covers approximately 95,000 square kilometres (36,680 square miles). In the low lying coastal plain there are a number of rivers, creeks and freshwater wetlands. Hills and mountains rise out of the coastal plan, creating distinctive landmarks such as Castle Hill. The long coastline features beaches, mangrove estuaries, saltpans and coastal swamps. These natural habitats support a wide range of flora and fauna including: 53 mammal species; a large number of reptiles and amphibians including land snakes, estuarine crocodiles, and a diverse range of lizard and frog species; and at least 365 bird species. Endangered, vulnerable and rare species are also found here, including mahogany gliders, marine turtles, dugong and cassowaries. National Parks and other environmental reserves include Magnetic Island, Paluma Range, and Bowling Green Bay National Parks; and the Cape Pallarenda and Townsville Town Common Conservation Parks. Our region is partly within and adjoins the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the Queensland State Marine Park. Townsville city is a major service centre, and the main centre for government administration outside Brisbane (the State Capital). Internationally recognised research institutions and natural resource management organizations such as James Cook University, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) call the city home and provide academic expertise to support the delivery of study abroad programs facilitated within the region. 12 DAY 1 Arrive Magnetic Island (Lunch, Dinner) Arrive Townsville airport and transfer to Sealink ferry terminal (15 minutes) for your journey to Magnetic Island. A flexible afternoon designed to welcome you North Queensland and take in some scenery of this island set on the Great Barrier Reef. Meet your host Ranger Tony Airport transfers + Sealink Ferry to the Island +Transfers to bungalow bay included. Afternoon Forts Walk trail through the National Park Students will be guided on Magnetic Island most popular walking trail through the north east corner of the national park. The trail is a journey of history, culture and wildlife with interpretation of the ecology and the surrounding environments by your guide. Also, the best place to spot koala s in the wild. All National park permits are catered for by Bungalow Bay and bottled water supplied to guests. From the grill Outback dusted lamb fillets, local reef fish with rock salt, sausages, bacon, tomatoes, pancakes Introduction to Queensland landscapes and eco systems A terrestrial discovery 11am to 3pm Magnetic Island hosts a diverse array of eco systems, flora and fauna to start your learning experience about Terrestrial Landscapes found throughout Queensland. Magnetic Island is home to Australia s most northern population of wild koala s, the most concentrated population of northern death adders, plus a large array of interesting creatures such as the endangered bush stone curlew. Join Ranger Tony for a 1.25 hour presentation showcasing the biodiversity of Queensland s habitats tied in with his special personal collection of wildlife endemic to each region. The tour will then progress through the Magnetic Island National Park into the low wetlands area of Horseshoe Bay before climbing into the dry sclerophyll forests bordering the granite boulder habitats which leads to Balding Bay for a swim. We will showcase some diverse habitats making home to over 75 species of reptiles, mammals and birds found in the dry tropics. Accommodation at Bungalow Bay Koala Village DAY 3 Rehabilitation Project, Horseshoe Bay, Townsville Reef HQ Aquarium (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) The Magnetic Island National Parks and Wildlife office is a multi-tasked office that is responsible for the marine park extending south to Cape Upstart, north including the Palm Island group and the land on Magnetic Island. With a large population surrounding these habitats pressure is increasing and our working relationship will allow us to explore their expertise. Morning based experience sharing the day in the life of a National Parks Ranger tied with a hands on rehabilitation project that fits in with their desired outcomes. This could be tied in with track maintenance, revegetation, land clearing, flora and fauna studies. After Lunch some free time to explore Horseshoe Bay enjoy the cafes, beach and tropical atmosphere of Horseshoe Bay. Afternoon transfer to Townsville on the 4:30pm ferry / arrive at 5pm and check into Reef HQ Aquarium. Reef Sleep Have you ever wondered what happens on the night shift? Experience the world s largest living coral reef aquarium at night and find out! The Reef Sleep program is an exciting and safe way for you and your students to observe the nocturnal habits of our reef creatures. Go behind-the-scenes of our 2.5 million-litre Coral Reef Exhibit; have supper and fall asleep with the amazing reef creatures that call Reef HQ Aquarium home; and wake up to breakfast and the breathtaking views of Reef HQ Aquarium. 13 DAY 4 Reef HQ Aquarium, Creature Feature Workshop, Turtle Hospital (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Meet team at Reef HQ and begin your exclusive learning experience after Breakfast. Introduction to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and World Heritage Area The Great Barrier Reef is internationally recognised for its outstanding biodiversity. The World Heritage status of the reef recognises its great diversity of species and habitats. Conserving the reef s biodiversity is not just desirable - it is essential. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is responsible for managing the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park so it s protected for the future. During this introductory series of lectures you will gain a fuller appreciation of the enormity of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, what challenges it is facing and how it is cooperatively managed, making it arguably the best managed natural resource on planet earth. Creature Feature Workshop The Discovery Lagoon is one of Reef HQ Aquarium s newest living exhibitions. It is home to an amazing array of reef creatures. Students will have a hands-on opportunity to interact with animals such as baby leopard sharks, rays, sea cucumbers and sea stars that inhabit Discovery Lagoon and call the Great Barrier Reef home. Dr. Adam Smith (Director Reef Ecologic) will facilitate an experiential education program focusing on Reef Management Strategies in an expedition style format. Dr. Smith and his undergraduate students will utilize the Horseshoe Bay school house and fringing coral reefs surrounding Magnetic Island to explore and showcase the contemporary management strategies used to protect these vital ecosystems fundamental to sustainable development and ecosystem based adaptation. Exploring the concept of inshore reef regeneration utilizing emerging technologies and interpretive monitoring. Accommodation Bungalow Bay Koala Village. DAY 6 Paluma range national park (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) Transfer Bungalow Bay Koala Village to Magnetic Island Ferry Terminal. Ferry transfer to Townsville. Group greeted by Hidden Valley Cabins and Tours at ferry terminal. Introduction to the World Heritage Listed Wet Tropics Rainforest. Our day will be spent visiting the Paluma Range National Park (The southern entrance to the Wet Tropics) an amazing biodiversity the wet tropics region is home to between 30 per cent and 60 per cent of Australia s Marsupials, Mammals, Birds, Frogs, Reptiles, Freshwater fish and butterflies. It is also home to between 30 per cent and 65 per cent of Australia s Ferns, Cycads, Conifers and orchids. The day will be spent completing an ecosystem transect of the Paluma Range mapping its outstanding biodiversity with your accredited Wet Tropic Guide. Accommodation: Hidden Valley Cabins. DAY 7 Australian Wildlife Conservancy / Platypus Tour (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) Service-learning Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) The AWC Australian Wildlife Conservancy owns and manages more than 3 million hectares, protecting more native wildlife than any other organization. AWC s Taravale and Mt Zero Conservancies are located on the western side of the Paluma Range National Park a work cattle station for 100 years; AWC purchased the properties for the conservation and preservation in We will learn about the AWC s business module and how they raise money from donations, philanthropy and governments to purchase and manage these properties. The group will also be helping with a program to remove old fences left on the property from the cattle grazing days. Running River Platypus Adventure As the even approaches we will conclude the day on the banks of Running River to spot the elusive platypus. Voted by Australian Geographic as one of the top five places to see a platypus in the wild. The tour includes a guide and history of Hidden Valley. This tour has a 98 per cent success rate. 18 DAY 8 Mungulla Station / Nywaigi Aboriginal People (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) The history and culture of Mungalla tour begins at the grand Mungalla Station homestead where we introduce you to Nywaigi Aboriginal culture. Here you can examine artefacts and try your hand at throwing a boomerang. We then board the bus for a short trip to the original homestead site where we introduce you to James Cassady who was the first European settler on Mungalla in As you view the remnants of the old Mungalla homestead you will hear the pioneering stories of these first white settlers and view old photos of this historic site. Let your thoughts drift back in time and imagine how it was in its glory days of formal gardens, tennis courts and thoroughbred horses. Here you will also visit the grave of James Cassady and his son Frank. We also explain the often brutal confrontation between European settlers and Nywaigi Aboriginal people and the role the Cassady family played in protecting our people. We again board the bus to return to the homestead to experience the amazing Captive Lives exhibition. Two groups of Indigenous people from this area were taken to America and Europe in the 1880s and 1890s to be exhibited at the Chicago World Fair, circuses and curiosity shows. 19 Miami University Earth Expeditions This graduate course program is offered jointly with Reef HQ Aquarium, Australia s National Education Centre for the Great Barrier Reef. Reef HQ Aquarium is a unit of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, which holds responsibility for the management and conservation of the Great Barrier Reef. Located in Townsville, Queensland, Reef HQ Aquarium houses the world s largest living coral reef exhibit. During the field portion of this course, we will be sleeping near the corals in the aquarium itself, venturing forth on several excursions for direct research on the Great Barrier Reef, and hiking in some of Australia s unique terrestrial habitats. Discussion topics include a range of marine science issues, as well as citizen engagement in marine science and environmental stewardship. Reef HQ Aquarium promotes reef stewardship through public exhibits, field programs, sustainability certification for tour operators, reef videoconferencing, and through school initiatives such as the successful Reef Guardian program, which engages hundreds of schools in reef conservation. Reef HQ Aquarium is also increasing its sea country partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people to support traditional ecological knowledge and stewardship of the reef environment. This course supports advanced study of coral reefs as well as on-land participation in integrated methods for involving communities in the preservation of marine environments.
