3 Social Marketing: Changing behaviour for good Develop the knowledge, strategies and tools to assist in protection of the environment while experiencing a unique, tropical location Sustainability requires government, businesses and individuals to change their behaviours to ACT. But how do you get people to reduce waste, prevent pollution, stop smoking, volunteer and more? Research has shown that simply providing information is not sufficient. What is the alternative? Social marketing has emerged as an effective tool for promoting sustainable behaviour change. It applies the principles of marketing to bring about changes in attitudes and behaviour for the social good. This 3 day professional development Masterclass will introduce participants to social marketing principles and theories, debate the uncritical application of commercial marketing concepts and examine ways in which the effectiveness of interventions can be measured. The course is delivered by experts with extensive experience in the design and delivery of impactful social marketing campaigns in Australia and abroad. Class outline A professional development Masterclass targeted at business owners/ managers, government officials, conservation agents, not-for-profits etc.. PROTECTING MARINE ECOSYSTEMS $ Explore the daily application of social marketing principles while visiting Australia s National Education Centre for the Great Barrier Reef. Access world class marine scientists and learn about the ecology of island ecosystems as they vastly differ from that of mainland communities. CARING FOR WILDLIFE $ Stay overnight with rangers at a world class wildlife facility. Discuss the protection and presentation of native Australian wildlife and explore avenues to shift public attitudes to protecting natural habitats and flora and fauna. SUSTAINABLE LIVING IN THE TROPICS $ Understand how Townsville City Council fosters sustainable behaviour in the community through demonstration projects and behaviour change programs before visiting a small business who is leading the way in the sustainability challenge. CARING FOR COUNTRY $ Showcasing best practice examples of businesses actively caring for the natural and cultural environments. Learn firsthand from the Nywaigi Aboriginal people about their culture and history, visit life-giving wetlands to better understand the impacts of human activities and overnight with a small business who is leading the sustainability challenge by example. 1

5 Reef HQ Aquarium Turtle Hospital Daily description DAY 1: (LUNCH, DINNER) Group participants will meet at James Cook University where you will be introduced to social marketing principles, theories and application in a classroom style format with world leading experts. Group work will be introduced and preparation for the following days field trip conducted. From here you will travel to Bungalow Bay Koala Village on unique Magnetic Island, where you will have a BBQ dinner and continue group work in Bungalow Bay s outdoor classroom. Shared accommodation will be provided at Bungalow Bay Koala Village (ranging from 3 share to 8 share bungalows). DAY 2: (BREAKFAST, DINNER) Bungalow Bay Rangers will start the day with a breakfast to remember a sumptuous buffet with interpretation of the Wulgurukaba Aboriginal tribe, land usage and the local bush tucker found in the area all served in the Koala Sanctuary that has you surrounded by native Australian animals. Human activity in a World Heritage Marine Park Following breakfast there will be some time for group work before you join Bungalow Bay rangers on a 2 hour tour where you will learn about the ecology of island ecosystems as they vastly differ from that of mainland communities. Rangers will highlight examples of human activities within the World Heritage listed marine park. Through hands-on experiences you will understand how this small community works together to keep the Island sustainable and how such experiences are used to transfer the Island s experience in sustainability to guests to generate sustained behaviour change. Travel to Townsville aboard Sealkink (lunch can be purchased on board) Managing interaction with the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) On return to Townsville you will visit Reef HQ Aquarium, Australia s National Education Centre for the GBR and the world s largest living coral reef aquarium. Here you will be introduced to the GBR Marine Park and how the aquarium encourages behavioural change through sustainable business operations.. With an interactive series of lectures by technical and educational staff, participants will understand what the aquarium does as well as what it means to be an eco certified tourism operation. Discussions will include the triple bottom line + 1, why the + 1 is so important! And how to move from contemplation to action. Have dinner and observe the nocturnal habits of the aquarium s reef creatures, an exciting and safe way to experience the reef at night. For those who are keen, snorkeling in the Reef HQ Aquarium is optional (max 20 pax). Accommodation will be provided at Reef HQ Aquarium. DAY 3: (BREAKFAST, LUNCH) Turtle Hospital After breakfast at Reef HQ Aquarium participants will visit Reef HQ Aquarium s Turtle Hospital. During this truly inspirational experience participants will learn more about marine turtles the ancient mariners of the sea and see where sick and injured marine turtles are being cared for. The hospital operates under and promotes the C.A.R.E (Conserve. Act. Rehabilitate. Educate) philosophy, playing a key role in raising community awareness in relation to threatened species and encouraging behavioural change that will benefit the environment. A light lunch will be provided at Reef HQ Aquarium. Afternoon group work sessions will continue at Reef HQ Aquarium before final presentations of group work and discussion of next steps and moving on beyond the course. On conclusion of day 3 you will be presented with a Certificate of Completion. 3

6 Caring for wildlife Visit a world-leading wildlife park and an island sanctuary. 7 Daily description DAY 1: (LUNCH, DINNER) Group participants will meet at James Cook University where you will be introduced to social marketing principles, theories and application in a classroom style format with world leading experts. Group work will be introduced and preparation for the following days field trip conducted. From here you will travel to multi-award winning Billabong Sanctuary, located on 25 acres of tropical bushland and home to a magnificent variety of native mammals, birds and reptiles. Here you will have dinner on the edge of the billabong and be introduced to native Australian wildlife during a 1.5 hour nocturnal tour before falling asleep to the sounds of the billabong in the Melaleuca Function Centre. DAY 2: (BREAKFAST, DINNER) Educational, interactive wildlife experience Day 2 commences with a hot breakfast at Billabong Sanctuary followed by an educational hands-on tour with sanctuary rangers. Be shown the workings of the park and understand how the park uses hands-on experiences to educate visitors about native wildlife, historical and contemporary threats to their survival and pressures on their habitats with the aim of effecting positive attitudes and behaviour towards the animals. From here you will travel to to Bungalow Bay Koala Village on the unique Magnetic Island aboard Sealink (lunch can be purchased at the terminal cafe prior to departure). Horseshoe Bay Ecosystems insight On arrival on the Island you will have the opportunity to explore a diverse system of habitats from the hinterland of Horseshoe Bay into the catchment of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. This area marries the pressures of community living and development with the fragile ecosystem of nature. Understand how Bungalow Bay rangers use activities and interpretation to impart messages about the fragility of island ecosystems and the impact of development, community living and habitat loss on native Australian wildlife to generate sustained attitude and behaviour change by guests. Be introduced to Bungalow Bay Koala Village and settle into group work activities in the outdoor classroom. A BBQ dinner and overnight shared accommodation will be provided (ranging from 3 share to 8 share bungalows). DAY 3: (BREAKFAST, LUNCH) Following breakfast group work will be conducted at Bungalow Bay s outdoor classroom before you take a 2 hour eco Australian wildlife tour. Be introduced to the ecology of Island ecosystems as they vastly differ from that of mainland communities together with examples of human activities within the World Heritage listed marine park. Meet the wildlife encountered on the Island with rangers. Lunch will be provided on return. Afternoon group work sessions continue at Bungalow Bay incorporating final presentations and discussion of next steps and moving on beyond the course. On conclusion of your course you will be presented with a Certificate of Completion before you return to Townsville aboard Sealink. 5

DAY 2: (LUNCH, DINNER) You will be collected by Kookaburra Tours and taken to Townsville City Council (TCC) where you will be introduced to a range of initiatives to ensure that the city grows sustainably within its unique, internationally recognised, environments including the City Solar project. City Solar Tour and Rowes Bay Sustainable House visit Take a City Solar Tour highlighting past, present and potential energy saving initiatives introduced by leading businesses and residents (2.5 hours) and visit (and have lunch at) the Rowes Bay Sustainable House Learnscape which plays an important part in TCC s hands-on learning approach to sustainability in water, energy and nature (1.5 hours). The City Solar Project is showcased as a demonstrable means of changing whole-of-community behaviour using leading edge communication technologies including a combination of community based social marketing, persuasive communication and systems thinking. Drive to Hidden Valley via World Heritage Listed Wet Tropics, Paluma Range National Park stopping enroute for afternoon tea at award-winning Frosty Mango cafe (at your own cost). Platypus tour Settle in to your rustic cabin before taking a tour to see one of the only monotremes in existence - the platypus. You will travel down to Running River where the platypus can be viewed frolicking and feeding in the fresh mountain water. Your tour includes a personal guide. Return for dinner followed by movie night in a bush setting. Understand how mass media channels can contribute to social marketing aims before retiring to your cabin for the night. DAY 3: (BREAKFAST, LUNCH) Solar tour After breakfast take a tour of the solar system. See how accommodation owners Ian and Bonnie McLennan use their own experience to educate guests in renewable energy. Explore the messages distributed around the site and consider how effective they are in achieving long-term sustainable behaviour change. You will enjoy lunch with native Australian wildlife including lizards, snakes, and some of our fuzzier, cuter animals. With Ranger Dan you will and consider how to create a public awareness campaign to help manage conflicts between wildlife and people. Ask how social marketing can improve these campaigns. Why are they necessary? A truly hands on, Australian experience where everyone will get to touch, hold and come face to face with some of Australia s most iconic wildlife. Group work sessions will continue in your bush setting before final presentations and discussion of next steps and moving on beyond the course. DAY 2: (LUNCH, DINNER) Participants will be picked up from their accommodation by Kookaburra Tours before travel to Mungalla Station around 1.5 hours north of Townsville. Caring for country tour (2 hours) and Captive Lives exhibition Here you will be introduced to the Nywaigi people and their culture at the grand Mungulla Station homestead, lay on Nywaigi country to feel your heart connect to the land and be moved by the Captive Lives story of the Aboriginal people from Mungalla Station and surrounding areas that were exhibited as cannibals and savages in the nineteenth century circuses and sideshows of Europe and America. Over a bush lunch you will have the opportunity to chat with Nywaigi storytellers. You will hear from Traditional Owners and learn about the objectives of opening Mungulla Station, a working cattle property, to the public and tour groups. Wetlands introductory tour From here you will travel with Kookaburra Tours to the TYTO Wetlands precinct, one of Australia s largest urban wetland rehabilitation projects.
